Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of a flame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety lamps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1956 was made under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 120 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1956 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 17 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials This flow model is generic and applicable to most commodities and amenable to updating supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of chromium. This report follows the flow of chromium through its metallurgical, chemical, and refractory applications, and highlights areas where significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 451,769 mt of chromium were consumed, including 99,221 mt of chromium from recycling, Chromium losses from all causes in 1989 were estimated to be 345,347 mt from a variety of areas. These areas and their chromium losses are as follows: processing losses, 38,825 mt; processing-downgraded scrap, 18,227 mt; manufacturing losses, 18,128 mt; manufacturing-downgraded scrap, 56,595 mt; prompt scrap exported, 1,531 mt; obsolete scrap exported, 43,443 mt; recovery losses, 155,529 mt; and recycling losses, 13,069 mt. Recycled chromium-containing material accounted for 22 pct of the apparent consumption of chromium in 1989.

How It Works Hydraulic cylinders actuated by a lever inside the cab cause the cab to pivot about a horizontal axis. This action raises or lowers the cab height. The total cab excursion is 14 inches. A release valve in the hydraulic system allows the cab to lower automatically if struck by a roof load or overhead obstruction. The pivoting action of the cab is engineered so that the operator maintains comfortable use of all controls at all cab heights. The movement is such that the angular relationship of the operator's ankles With the tram and brake foot controls IS consistently within 90 to 100 degrees. Figure 1 outlines the approximate position of the operator at three cab elevations.

The performance characteristics, efficiency, and operating pressure of jute line-brattice systems were studied under varying underground conditions; various fabric grades and installation methods were used. The test results indicate that line-brattice system efficiency is dependent upon the method of ventilation the method of installation, porosity of fabric, and size of tight rib area.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year's edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

Relative enthalpies of high-purity disodium hexatitanate (Na2Ti6013) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide new thermodynamic data needed to advance the technology of materials. Measurements from 298.15 to 1,478 K were made by drop calorimetry with a copper block. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, en-tropy, and Gibbs energy function between 298.15 and 1,500 K. Enthalpy data are also given in equation form and are combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation, Gibbs energies of formation, and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation. Similar calculations were made for the reaction of Na20 with Ti02.

"INTRODUCTIONMine ventilation planning is an engineering design process requiring a substantial amount of qualitative knowledge obtained through experience. A concept for a knowledge-based ventilation expert system was developed by Ramani and Prasad (1987).1 11 An expert system based on the above scheme was conceived with the motivation of providing a tool to facilitate decision making for ventilation engineers in the context of computer assisted ventilation planning. Options for the implementation of the system were then examined and several commercial, personal computer (PC) based shells assessed toward this end. The options considered, the evaluation criteria and procedure arc discussed in Prasad ·and Ramani, (1989).Cll Following the above study, a scheme was developed to represent the components of the expert system.<3> Evaluation of several commercial shells indicated that there was none available which permitted interfacing with a large external algorithmic program. It was therefore decided to develop the KBS in LISP and custom build the necessary interfacing routines to ""hook out• to the network analysis program (NAP). Due to this choice of development strategy, the computer implementation aspects of the KBS arc important as all the interfacing components had to be developed with the basic tools offered by LISP.In this paper, the implementation of the knowledge based system (KBS), in terms of its component, the interfaces among the various components of the KBS and between the KBS and the user arc described. The ventilation KBS consists of an AES (analysis expert system), an IES (interpretation expert system)' and an algorithmic NAP (network analy5is program). The AES analyzes the input to the NAP considering the legal 5tipulations governing the various mine ventilation network parameters and principles of good ventilation, helping the ventilation engineer develop and represent represent the problem for solution by the NAP. The IES diagnoses the output from the NAP in terms of the critical parameters in the context of the given problem. Thi5 loop is continued till a satisfactory salution is obtained. The implementational details of the AES, the IES and the approaches to the validation of the expert system arc also discussed."

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

A series of geological surveys were completed in six coal mines in connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on methane control. The aim of these surveys was twofold: First, to study the overall geology of the coalbed, and second to use the resulting data to evaluate the influence of the geological characteristics of the coalbed on safe and efficient coal extraction. This report explains the advantages of geologic maps and fence diagrams in coal mining, and how the knowledge gained from such geologic investigations of mines can help control many underground problems.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines demonstrated that nonionic surfactants increased the leaching rate of copper in the flask leaching of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate if sufficient ferric sulfate was present. This research was continued by the Bureau in Part 2 to further explore the application of nonionic surfactants to the dump leaching of chalcopyrite. A polyoxyethylene lauryl ether was selected as the superior nonionic surfactant tested at 25° and 50° C. The addition of the surfactant increased copper leaching by 116 pct at 25° C and 1.0 pct solids and by 61 pct at 50° C and 0.5 pct solids at Fe 3+ concentrations greater than 1 g/L. At 0.1.0 g/L Fe 3+ and below, the addition of the surfactant produced as much as a 35 pct decrease in leaching. Each of the nonionic surfactants studied was found to be heavily adsorbed by a typical chalcopyrite ore, which poses a serious barrier to the application of nonionic surfactants in an actual chalcopyrite dump.

Mine ventilation can be broadly defined as the branch of mining engineering primarily concerned with the controlled flow of air through mine airways to maintain an acceptable atmospheric environment wherever men work or travel underground. Martinson (1976) has defined three elements of mine ventilation, 1) an engineering element concerned with establishing quality control (removal of dust and gases), quantity control (regula¬tion of air direction and magnitude) and climatic conditioning (temperature-humidity control), 2) a biological element in which an understanding of biological response is used in assessing the mine environment, and 3) a philosophical element requiring judgements as to the degree of risk or worker discomfort that is socially acceptable. Most texts on ventilation, such as Hartman (1961), limit themselves to a discussion of the engineering element. Although also limiting his text to engineering control, Weeks (1928) thoughtfully addresses the other elements in the preface of his book where he states: "Life is brief and happiness elusive under the best of conditions; so beside the commercial aspect must be placed the humanitarian. Is it not reasonable that the operator should give his men a chance to spend their working hours in a comfortable environment, with the danger of sudden death or disability reduced as much as possible?" The statutory requirements of ventilation are, in most countries, established on the basis of biological response as determined by basic research or are dictated by social awareness, often touched off by major disasters, resulting in demands on regulatory bodies for more stringent requirements. [Notwithstanding the fact that it is now fairly generally recognized that widespread explosions can be almost absolutely prevented in coal mines by efficient rock-dusting and that this rock-dusting can be done thoroughly at a cost which should seldom exceed 1 cent per ton of coal mined, a recent survey of the situation by the Safety Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, following a similar survey by the Bureau in the fall of 1925, shows that while some progress is being made by our coal-mining people, many entire mining communities are lamentably slow in taking advantage of one of the most effective safeguards available. Much of the information as to the extent of rock-dusting was obtained through the various State inspection departments. Table 1 shows that in the fall of 1925 about 92 coal companies in the United States were using rock-dust ad that in the summer of 1927 the number had increased to 239, or about 160 per cent increase. Similarly, from the fall of 1925 to the summer of 1927 the number of mines using rock-dust increased from 177 to 463, or about 160 per cent increase. This appears to be a decidedly healthy increase, but when it is considered that in 1926 (the last date for which figures are available) there were 7,141 bituminous mines operating and that there were only 463 or 61 par cent, which were even reported to Ice using rock-dust to any extent whatever, the forgoing figures as to progress are by no means impressive or even satisfactory.]

The selection of a process for treating a gold ore is governed primarily by the characteristics of the ore under consideration. The form in which the gold occurs, its mode of association with other minerals, and the size and surface condition of the gold particles are important factors which influence materially the choice of procedure for recovering gold. A knowledge of these characteristics may be obtained by microscopic and chemical methods combined with experimental testing. Cyanidation and amalgamation, either alone or in conjunction with flotation and gravity methods, are peculiarly adapted to the treatment of gold ores, especially those of relatively low grade. Gold alloys readily with mercury provided both present clean surfaces. The presence of oils and grease, antimony and arsenic minerals, or soluble sulphides have a harmful effect. Very small, flaky particles of gold frequently are lost in amalgamation because of noncontact with the mercury. Fine gold in pyrite, or gold having rusty or contaminated surfaces, is often lost for the same reason. Grinding or some form of abrasion sometimes removes surface films of iron oxide or substances of a similar nature, and alkalies or other chemicals are used to remove grease. Gold is readily soluble in cyanide solution, and this method of treatment is particularly effective in the recovery of gold from the tailings resulting from other types of concentration procedure. Cyanide solutions must contact the gold to insure recovery, and the porosity of the ore treated and the fineness of grinding required are important governing factors. The use of lime in cyanidation is necessary to protect the cyanide, to precipitate undesirable substances, and to settle slimes. Certain substances in ores are harmful in cyanidation; chief among them are those that combine with cyanide, forming cyanides, and carbon which precipitates gold from solution. Arsenic and antimony are also harmful if present in sufficient quantity. These and other difficulties encountered in cyaniding certain ores often are overcome by roasting prior to leaching. Zinc dust is used almost universally for precipitating precious metals from cyanide solutions. The refining and melting of the product may be accomplished by oxidizing the zinc before melting it in graphite pots with fluxes, although sulphuric acid is now used largely to remove the zinc before melting. Straight cyanidation practice is being replaced by flotation as a major process, followed by cyanide leaching of the tailings, but amalgamation is still needed as a primary process for the recovery of coarse gold before either flotation or cyanidation.

The California pesticide industry in 1962 consumed about 30,000 tons of clay, talc, limestone, diatomite, sulfur, and other minerals as fillers (carriers and diluents) in pesticide formulation. This was 10 percent of the U.S. filler requirement for pesticides. About two- thirds of the California total was supplied by a few local mineral producers; the remainder came mainly from Florida, Georgia, and Wyoming. The objectives of this report are to provide data on quantities, sources, specifications, and market conditions for minerals used as fillers by California pesticide formulators. The study disclosed that specifications for mineral fillers have become more rigid and formulators have become more numerous in recent years. During 1962 over 1,200 firms registered 16,000 pesticide products with the Bureau of Chemistry in California. Factors which will tend to diminish future need for mineral fillers include the trend toward greater use of organic sprays rather than dusts and further development of biological controls, such as the development of sterile insect strains.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.
