To provide a means for mechanically separating and recovering nonferrous metals continuously from non-magnetic reject material produced at scrap automobile shredding facilities. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a water elutriator system that separates metals from shredded scrap auto-mobiles based on differences in specific gravities. A premium-quality product, containing aluminum, magnesium, lead, zinc die cast, copper, copper alloys, and stainless steels, is obtained. How It Works Mixed nonmagnetic reject material currently being separated at automobile shred-ding facilities is introduced onto the top of an upwardly flowing vertical column of water. The water, overflowing a weir in the top of the vertical column, carries with it the floating, lightweight waste materials, mostly combustibles, while the heavier pieces sink through the rising water. Medium-density substances such as glass, rubber, and heavy plastics are carried off through a side port, located in the upper third of the column. The cleaned, mixed metal product sinks to the bottom and is continuously removed from the base of the column with a bucket elevator having perforated buckets. All three categories of material are removed from the system on separate wire mesh belt conveyors. Most of the water drains through the belts into a holding tank and, after settling, is recirculated back through the elutriator column. The purity and recovery of the metal product are influenced by two elutriator operating variables: the flow rate of water through the vertical column, and the height of the overflow weir at the top of the column.

Lower the respirable dust expo-sure of longwall mine workers by reducing the amount of air-borne respirable dust generated during coal extraction. Approach Increase the moisture content of the coal seam through water infusion before the coal is mined. How Water Infusion Works Increasing the moisture content in coal tends to prevent respirable dust from becoming air-borne during mining and transport. The moisture content of the coal seam can be increased by infusing water into the seam. Water under pressure is forced into the cracks (cleats) of the coal seam through sealed bore-holes. The effectiveness of water infusion is a function of the amount of water the coal seam accepts (its infusibility), which depends on the cleat density (cleat spacing) and cleat size (crack diameter). Thus the effect of water infusion on dust control depends mainly on coal seam characteristics. Water infusion techniques are generally used to restrict the flow of methane gas to the working face; however, the technique provides an alternative dust control method in mines with severe dust problems which limit production.

Reduce the cost of modifying uranium well casings so that leaching solutions can pass through, but sand grains are blocked. Approach The well casing and surrounding cement are perforated at the mineralized zone by impinging them with high pressure water jets. How It Works A nozzle assembly is attached to a high pressure (15,000 psi) pipe and lowered into the well casing which typically is schedule 40 PVC (poly-vinyl chloride). The high pressure pipe line is extended down Into the casing until it reaches the mineralized zone. The upper end of the pipeline is then connected by a high pressure hose to the outlet of a 10,000 psi pump. Turning the pump on for 5 seconds causes a high velocity water jet to cut through the well casing and the surrounding cement. Figure 1 shows a high pressure pipe being installed in a well casing. Cutting small diameter holes in the casing allows the leachant to enter the casing and be pumped to the surface. However, the holes are small enough to prevent most sand grains from entering. Numerous holes are usually cut through the casing. The 3-nozzle assembly shown in Figure 2 cuts three holes, one above another.

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. Approach A water resistant extensometer is made by enclosing a rod-actuated transducer in a telescoping tube which is enclosed within an oil-filled outer housing. How It Works To assemble a water resistant extensometer, a cylinder -shaped transducer and two support rings are pushed into the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube where the transducer is held in place by friction. The outside of the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube is then greased and slid into the slightly larger-diameter section. See drawing. The cylinder-shaped transducer contains a potentiometer whose actuating arm is attached to a stainless steel extension rod that passes through one end of the telescoping tube. Drilling with water has the potential to significantly reduce the respirable dust concentrations generated from small-diameter rotary drills when drilling blastholes on surface mining operations. However, water adverseky affects tri- cone drill bits commonly used in surface drilling operations, causing excessive wear and premature replacement. Consequently, dry drilling with a dust collector system has the most widespread use in the industry. Tests have been conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) on a newly designed device for smaller diameter drills that separates the water from the bailing air before it reaches the bit and thus provides the cost benefit of dry drilling while providing the benefit of wet drilling for dust suppression. The water that is delivered to the hole with the bailing air is separated from the air by a proprietary mechanical device that is encased in a drill sub (short section of drill rod/pipe) located immediately behind the cutting bit. A cascade cyclone and a real-time dust monitor were used to sample dust emissions from the holes. Dust concentrations and silica content were measured when drilling dry versus drilling wet. The tests show that drilling with this water separating sub can reduce both measured dust emissions from the boreholes and visible dust around the drill rig.

To provide cooler air to miners working in hot areas of mines, particularly new deep hardrock mines. Approach Air supplied to hot working areas of mines is cooled by passing it through a series of water sprays. How It Works Water nozzles mounted inside a section of ventilation tubing release cooling sprays of water into the air being blown through the tube. The prototype of the water spray cooler consists of six evenly spaced water sprays located inside a 10-ft. long section of 16-inch-diameter fiberglass ventilation tubing. See diagram. This section of rigid tubing is installed into one of the positive pressure ventilation tubing lines that conduct fresh air into working stopes. The intake manifold to the six water sprays is connected to the mine?s cool water line, and the water valve on the manifold is opened. Warm ventilation air being supplied to the stope passes through the water sprays, and is cooled by the lower temperature water.

As U.S. mines go to greater depths, the high temperatures and humidities characteristic of such depths make it difficult to maintain a comfortable environment in working areas. Better techniques for cooling these deep working areas are needed. At the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota the Bureau of Mines has tested a water spray cooler inserted into the fresh air vent tube entering a warm stope. The cooler supplied more than 6 tons of refrigeration to the stope air, which dropped from an inlet temperature of 83° F dry bulb and 75° F wet bulb to 73.5° F dry bulb and 71.5° F wet bulb. These preliminary results show the water spray cooler to be a feasible concept. However, there is a need for substantial refinement and further testing, and work on the concept will be continued under contract to the Bureau.

To protect face workers from the dust, the end of the brattice is usually maintained close to the face to increase ventilation effectiveness. Develop technology that can reduce the dust exposure of a mine worker at the tailgate end of the longwall face by providing him with a clean split of air. Approach Use the jet spray air mover (JSAM) developed under a Bureau of Mines contract (refer to Technology News No. 117 for details on the development), to clean a small portion of the face air and to discharge the clean air behind a brattice partition. How It Works At most longwalls, air flows along the face from head-to-tail. Most of the airborne respirable dust generated along the face during mining is transported to the tailgate with the airflow. Any miner required to work at the tailgate is exposed to this dust. The only practical means of removing airborne respirable dust is with a scrubber. Simplicity and size made the JSAM the best choice for cleaning a portion of the tailgate air. The scrubber has no moving parts and is operated by water at low flow rates (<10 gpm) and fairly high pressures (250-500 psig). Many longwalls have sufficient water systems to supply the JSAM with adequate water pressures and flow rates. Also, the JSAM&apos;s size (4&apos;x 2&apos;x 1&apos;) allows it to be hung on one of the tailgate&apos;s shields or at some other convenient location. A clean split can be maintained at the tailgate by discharging the cleaned air behind a brattice partition at the work area. This should effectively seal off the clean air from the dusty air and provide the tailgate worker with a less dusty work environment.

Reduce workers&apos; dust exposure by capturing airborne coal and quartz dust generated by a continuous mining machine. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber system operating at 1,000 psi on the boom of a continuous miner at the conveyor throat. Dusty air from the face area is drawn through the scrubber and cleaned air discharged into the return. How it Works Most coal mines use exhaust face ventilation to send fresh air over the miner operator and contaminated air behind the line curtain to the return. The problem with exhaust ventilation is that the line curtain should be within 10 ft of the face for maximum effectiveness. If the line curtain is not extended properly, or water sprays for dust control are poorly installed, dust rolls back towards the operator. An effective way of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted on the mining machine.

The notion of wayfinding, as conceptualized by planners, geographers, and psychologists, denotes the ability of an individual to move from one point to another through physical space. In order to achieve this movement, a person relies on a cognitive map of spatial representations [Passini 1984]. Which features of this cognitive mapping will be stressed depend, in part, on the researcher&apos;s perspective. A planner, for instance, would tend to emphasize the effect of physical structures on mobility. A psychologist, on the other hand, might focus on individual differences in how human minds encompass and represent physical space [Evans et al. 1984]. There is yet another dimension to wayfinding that needs consideration, and it rests upon the idea that reality, as experienced by human beings, is mediated: "[People] have preselected and preinterpreted this world by a series of commonsense constructs ... which help them find their bearings in their natural and socio-cultural environment and to come to terms with it" [Schutz 1967]. These "common sense constructs" are arrived at socially and constitute the agreed-upon schemas that guide people&apos;s everyday activities. According to this principle, cognition is governed by some nonlogical factors that reflect not only individual procedures but collective ones as well. These group strategies, which are shaped by shared rules and values, influence "the information gathered, the ways it is processed, the inferences that are drawn, the options that are being considered, and those that are finally chosen" [Etzioni 1992]. From this perspective, cognitive maps, rather than being individual-centered templates of environmental images [Rovine and Weisman 1989] or representations of spatial relationships [Evans 1980], are partially group-centered schematic processes. As such, they are subject to reinterpretation, revision, and outside intervention [Kaplan and Kaplan 1982]. As intermediaries between the environment and behavior, cognitive maps serve as bases for decision-making. Traditionally, it has been assumed that good maps facilitate correct decisions, which in turn leads to optimal performance during wayfinding [Hunt 1984]. Given the argument that there is a social (non¬cognitive) facet to cognitive mapping, however, this image of a cognitive map as some sort of static reference construct that motivates individual action is too narrow and mechanistic. If cognition involves less a knowledge of the environ¬ment than it does the process of "giving it meaning through imposing an order on it" [Rapoport 1976], then wayfinding behavior is not j ust a function of setting and individual differences, but is also a function of one&apos;s "normative-affective" structure [Etzioni 1992]. Rapoport [1976] used such an assumption as the base for a set of hypotheses about the connection between "external demands" and "organismic factors." A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Geomechanics Group at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in conjunction with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Research Laboratory, is the development of design guidelines for underground mining within weak rock masses. The study expands upon the span design curve for man-entry operations and the stability graph for nonentry operations developed at UBC by extending the application to weak rock masses. The original database has been augmented by weak rock mass information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Indonesia, and Europe. The common factor in all of these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. This paper expands on the North American database and how the design curves have been employed at mining operations throughout the world. The definition of a weak rock mass for this study has been defined as having an RMR76 under 45% and/or a Q-value under 1.0.

To reduce the respirable dust generated by auger-type continuous coal mining machines. The Approach: Use water sprays close to the cutting bits on the auger so that coal fragments are thoroughly wetted as they are formed to prevent dust dispersal into the ventilating air. How It Works: The "wet auger" system of dust control uses water sprays distributed on both shafts of auger type continuous miners. This approach has been tested underground by personnel of the Bureau&apos;s Twin Cities (Minn.) Mining Research Center on a Wilcox Mark 20 continuous miner, in a cost sharing contract with Buchanan & Sons Coal Company, Inc. Personnel of the Interior Department&apos;s Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration collected dust samples and analyzed the data. A test machine was fitted with six sprays on each auger (see Fig. 1). Water flow rates from 8 to 12 gpm at pressures from 90 to 120 psi, or about 8 gallons per ton of coal mined, were required. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determined. This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers. In this procedure commonly known as the Draves test, the concentration of a surfactant required to give a 'sink time' of 25 s is determined.Other investigators have used slight variations of the Walker method to study the wetting of fine particles [ 8-12 ] , by measuring the time for wetting a given amount of powder. There are differences in the manner in which the time of wetting is measured, however. Some investigators measure the time for the last trace of coal to disappear [ 8,11 ] whereas others determine the time for the vast majority of particles to sink [ 10 ] . Some investigators report a wetting rate [ 11 ] which is a value calculated on the basis of the time for the 'last traces of particles to sink'. The differences in choice of criterion for wetting can result in different values for wetting rates as illustrated in Fig. 1 which is based upon our measurements of the amount of powder wetted as a function of time. The procedure for wetting rate measurements is described in the next section. The technique in which time for disappearance of the 'last traces of particles' is determined gives the smallest value for the wetting rate, while the technique in which the time for wetting of the 'vast majority' of particles is determined will give intermediate rates. The terms 'last traces of particles' and 'vast majority of particles' are usually not defined explicitly and can lead to large differences in wetting rates measured by different investigators. Since our measurements show that the wetting rates for an assembly of powder decreases with time, we have used the initial wetting rates to compare the wetting behavior of coal in solutions of different surfactants."

"Dust abatement by water sprays involves the subprocesses of 1) collision between dust particles and water droplets, 2) adhesion of particles to droplets, and 3) engulfment of particles by the droplets. A review of the fundamental aspects of these subprocesses shows that collisions between particles and droplets are determined by aerodynamics and the size and surface charge of the particles and of the droplets. However, the adhesion and engulfment subprocesses depend upon the wetting characteristics of the particles. Although wetting agents (also known as surfactants) have been used as dust suppressants in several investigations, conflicting results are available regarding their effectiveness. In this paper, we show that these results can be explained if the effects of coal rank on surfactant adsorption and wetting characteristics are taken into account.The influence of several nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy adducts on the wetting behavior of coal is presented. The wetting was determined by a modified Walker Test method, and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wettability of coal depends upon coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant, and the number of ethoxy groups in the molecule.IntroductionDue to the inherent nature of the mining process, a large number of particles are generated, a portion of which becomes airborne to create dust. Dust can be aesthetically and environmentally unacceptable and it can also be explosive. Fine particles in the respirable size range ( < 5 urn) are con-sidered to cause lung diseases, namely, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, etc.(1) Several approaches to reduce dust in mine environments are practiced throughout the mining industry. These include decrease in generation of dust through improvements in mine machinery, ventilation (in which lower dust levels are achieved by dilution of contaminated air with clean air), and dust removal methods. Water sprays are most commonly used to remove dust par-ticles. Recently, scrubbers are reported to have been installed on mining machines to remove dust,(2,3) which also make use of water sprays to reduce dust."

? A roof bolter reaches for a lever while guiding the drill with his other hand. Since he&apos;s watching the drill and many of the controls look and feel alike, he hits the wrong control and crushes his hand. ? Six hours into the night shift, an ore truck driver dozes off. The truck plows over the berm and down into the pit. ? Fleeing a afire, a face crew sees smoke in the intake entry. Assuming the fire is ahead, they cross over to another entry, but soon encounter even worse smoke. These very different accidents have at least one factor in common: the human factor. The actions, decisions, thoughts, or perceptions of one or more humans contributed to the accident. These are just a few examples of safety problems researched by the Human Factors Group of the Pittsburgh Research Center, U.S. Department of Energy.
