This is the story of a blast - not a large blast by todays standards as it only involved a total of approximately 50 cubic yards of rock. Nor did this blast involve any new or revolutionary blasting technique or require involved analysis or the applications of rock mechanics theories. Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

Lowering of quarry energy consumption participates to answer both environmental and financial issues. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry. Within this global quarry project, blast design, as the first link in the chain, has to be optimized in order to satisfy requirements of downstream operations. The authors have been developing and implementing an operational methodology using continuous field measurements and field adaptation methods for blast design. It drives the drilling and blasting work, aiming at a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Based upon actual local conditions (rock-mass assessment, face geometry, borehole deviations, etc.), blast patterns are optimized through a specific hole-by-hole blast design software. It provides a better and more consistent energy distribution, to achieve a better rock fragmentation, while avoiding explosive overconsumption. The software also calculates total energy inputs and the drilling and blasting contribution to Greenhouse Effect. Coupled with methodical fieldwork and variable density explosives, it has been leading to a real reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As the project is now reaching its final stage, demonstrations were conducted in various quarries around Europe. Several simulations were carried out and compared to the site data, in order to propose enhancements for the different phases (extraction, loading, hauling, crushing and transport) while bearing in mind the environmental impact of the quarry. This blasting methodology allows to assess the carbon footprint of drilling and blasting in conjunction with the downstream operations, thus to evaluate the global carbon footprint of quarrying. Griesemer Stone located in Springfield, Missouri has supplied aggregate in Southwest Missouri since 1946. In 1954 the decision was made to mine the formation and utilize the mined out area for warehouse space. As advancement proceeded, entrances and small diameter air shafts for ventilation were needed and had to be added. It was decided in 1989 to sink an 8' diameter air shaft designed to move 200,000 cubic feet of air per minute with the help of (4) four 50,000 CFM Loren Cook Fans.

In 2002, testing was proposed to generate needed data to assist in developing improved explosives safety standards within the US Department of Defense. This testing emphasizes two major areas: (1) full-scale donor/acceptor trials examining debris generation and acceptor response and (2) debris perforation testing of representative roof/wall materials. The full-scale donor/acceptor trials are referred to as the SciPan series. The first three tests in the SciPan series have been completed, as has the first phase of the SPIDER program. This paper describes the status and future of these testing programs, reasons for choosing specific tests, potential benefits, and planning for future phases.

Variable nature of rock and face conditions, varying execution and changing nature of blasting are making ongoing optimization challenging. Intelligent planning and on-going analytics are required to mitigate variability and convert blasting into a predictable outcome by use of technology. Blasting operations generate a huge amount of data which can be used intelligently for optimization. In this paper, details are provided of a system which is used for blasting data collection in the field – Key details around blast parameters, explosives, initiating system details, video, photographs, vibration and fragmentation are collected in a cloud-based platform. Data can also be collected through a mobility device in the field (even without internet connectivity) and synchronized with cloud-based system. Also, data from various sources can be imported in excel formats in the software including from upstream and downstream processes from blasting. App also gives indication about exceeding of vibration, air blast overpressure, fragment size etc. Thus, making it possible to perform QA-QC before charging and deciding initiation timing and sequence at the blasting site. The data can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate strategies at the design and execution stage. Data gathering of blast parameters, explosive used processing and analysis can be used to optimize operational efficiency, improve safety and environmental controls.

After Nobel invented dynamite, blasts were carried out by trial and error, without the use of equations based on the fundamental principles of Chemistry and Physics, although everyone accepted that shock waves were involved; but no equations were available to calculate their intensity. Around 1950 however, M.A. Cook proposed a procedure to calculate the thermochemistry of an explosive, and thus evaluate theenergy released during the explosion of a fully confined explosive. Some blasters then began to use theEnergy Factor; the latter, however, does not subdivide the energy into its three kinds of activities necessaryfor a successful blast, as demonstrated in 1968 by reference 2, namely i) the shock wave which weakensthe rock; ii) the stress field SS which fully fragments the rock; and iii) the release of the stress SS whichcauses the fully fragmented rock to burst out with the velocity necessary to move the rock into the muckpile. The article explains that the way to achieve a successful blast is by insuring that the explosive energy divides properly into the weakening action of the shock wave which is necessary to prevent large collar blocks and toe, and into adequate stress field intensity SS which is necessary to obtain good fragmentation size distribution at the crusher, as well as adequate burst out rock movement to achieve easy mucking.

The explosives industry is subject to the laws of multiple jurisdictions, which means that several regulatory agencies are responsible for governing different aspects of the commercial explosives industry. Among these regulators are the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) who implements codes that better ensure both occupational and public safety which is influenced by professional blasting projects and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who enforces commercial explosives storage and security, among other responsibilities.

At the International Society of Explosives Engineers Annual Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995, a Seismograph Standards Committee was established. The purpose of this committee was to develop objective performance specifications for vibration measurement instrumentation and field use practices. It was also understood that due to geology, temperature, and moisture in the soils, it is not possible to design and build an instrument to give results which are absolutely comparable for ground vibration. It was, however, considered essential to standardize instrumentation by which vibration can be measured under closely defined conditions so that results obtained by users of seismographs are always the same within stated tolerances.

Fracture mechanics (Atkinson 1987, Broek 1988, Rossmanith 1978-2002, 1983, 1997, Kanninen & Popelar 1985) and wave propagation (Graf 1975, Rinehart 1975) form the main ingredients in the new electronic detonator based blasting technology. The full potential of using short delay initiation timing in bench and underground blasting can only be exploited if the underlying physical processes are properly understood. From a structural geology point of view, in many open pit mine operations, blasting is performed in incompetent and/or loose rock. Under such conditions the stress waves produced by blasting very quickly dissipate in the rock mass and often their energy cannot effectively be put to work. This contribution shows the effect of open and closed joints – and to some degree also faulting – on the blast wave field and shows the influence of structural geology on the blasting result. A simple engineering method which combines wave propagation and impact mechanics is developed in order to assist the non-scientifically trained blaster in understanding blasting in blocky rock formations. Extensive use will be made of the so-called Lagrange diagram which was introduced in detail in the author’s previous lecture at ISEE 2003 (Rossmanith 2003). This presentation can be considered a continuation of the 2003 presentation.

Homestake Mining Company's Open Cut Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the northern Black Hills. The mine is within 300 feet of occupied residences on the south end, and within 1200 feet on the north end. Mining began at the north end of the open pit in October, 1983, and blasting related complaints began almost immediately. Noise and ground movement comprised the majority of the structural damage claims. As a result of these complaints, Homestake purchased a recording seismograph and began monitoring nearly every blast. In addition, the company hired a consultant to review Homestake's blasting and monitoring practices. He was also asked to do a single, one-time study of the cracks in six homes. This initial work led to Homestake monitoring all blasts with three seismographs and having South Dakota School of Mines and Technology do a year-long study of crack development and propagation in five homes in Lead.

This paper reports on an experimental study of the effect that bottom shaping might have on the impulse delivered to a light armored vehicle due to a buried mine detonating beneath the center of it. The study was restricted to explosives buried in saturated sand and three parameters were varied within the study: bottom angle (0 degrees to 21 degrees), depth of burial of the explosive (1.02 mm to 12.7 mm), and stand off distance (0 mm to 38.1 mm). Six hundred and thirty six milligrams of explosive was used as the explosive load. It has been shown in previously published work [1,2] that Hopkinson scaling works well for the determination of impulse loading on a semi-rigid target plates. Therefore in terms of a full scale test using 4.54 Kilograms of explosive the parameters investigated would cover a DOB of from 19.56 mm to 243.84 mm and a Stand off distance from 0 to 734.06 millimeters. These values nicely cover those of interest to the Marines with regard to the AAV (amphibious assault vehicle). Four angles were investigated at all DOB’s and Stand off distances – 0 degrees, 7 degrees, 13 degrees, and 20 degrees. The results show that reduction in impulse delivered to the target is achieved with an angled bottom on the target plate with a major reduction occurring before the 13 degree angle is reached. Hence vehicles with quite modest bottom angles could help greatly in load reduction with very little loss in utility.

"Image analysis techniques are widely used for blast fragmentation measurement, and various commercial packages are available for this purpose. These packages are very versatile and serve as a useful tool for optimization of blasting practice. But many times, the results provided by image analysis techniques do not match with sieved and predicted data. This leads to the suggestion that understanding the limitations of this technology is as important as understanding its usefulness and versatility.A study was conducted in two stages:(a) Comparison between the results of image analysis and screened data using laboratory scale muck piles.(b) Comparison between predicted (Kuz-Ram) and measured (Image analysis) blast fragmentation results for several bench blasts.During laboratory work, muck piles with known size distributions were analyzed with the help of image analysis technique. A disparity was observed between the sieved and measured results because the image analysis techniques cannot accurately determine the % of fi nes in the muck. During fi eld work about fourteen blasts were monitored. It was observed that predicted (Kuz-Ram) results rarely matched with measured (Image analysis) results. The Kuz-Ram curves were modifi ed by changing the rock factor so that the Kuz-Ram and Image analysis curves match in the vicinity of the 50% passing size. The pairs of curves (modifi ed Kuz-Ram and Image analysis) were divided into three categories depending upon their differences in the coarse and fi nes ranges. The blast design parameters affecting the difference between the pair of curves have been outlined. The suggestions have been made to better utilize the image analysis system."
