The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

A study has been undertaken to establish the relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. Prediction equations were formed to estimate the cutting resistance from the geotechnical parameters by multiple regression analysis. It is commonly accepted that the strength of rock measured from small samples tends to give unrealistically high estimates of the strength of larger samples, in situ blocks of rock or the rock mass in situ. The Weibull theory of the statistical strength of material provides a possible means for calculation of the strength of large rock volumes, based on the routine testing of small samples. Application of the Weibull approach to estimation of the strength of Moura coal showed an encouraging agreement with experimental results and the method was also applied to hard-rock andesitic and porphyry ore from Bajo de la Alumbrera, Argentina

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

A simple solution to the problem of whether to round the calculated number of trucks up or down to the nearest whole number is to adopt as criterion the minimum cost per unit volume/mass moved, assuming all trucks in the fleet are of the same type. When the effects on journey time of varying haul-road slope are calculated for several rolling resistances, it is shown that the optimum angle of 7.5 degrees is moderately independent of both rolling resistance and height climbed; the lower the resistance, the lower the sensitivity to ramp angle, but if haul-road gradients do not exceed 1 in 10 (5.7 degrees) for safety reasons then travelling time will never be more than 7% greater than its theoretical minimum. Further calculations result in a graph of the maximum payload values to incur the minimum cost, for different values of total effective resistance

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. The concept of risk is well established in the mining industry but it is difficult to provide a quantitative assessment of risk. A discussion is presented of the significant sources of risk in a mineral project and how they are addressed. The discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed which assesses the constituent components of the discount rate (real interest, mineral project risks and country risk)

An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

After carrying out a brief review of the existing safety assessment criteria for the spontaneous detonation of explosives in the mining of sulphide ore deposits in China, and giving a detailed description of the dynamic process and mechanism of the spontaneous detonation of explosives and the relative factors, the latest research results of three kinds of explosives reacting with a group of sulphide ores are presented, based on a reliable experimental method. Afterwards, a complete safety criterion for spontaneous detonation assessment, which depends on the hole temperature, the water solution Fe2+ and Fe3+ and the pH value, is established to determine (he safe charging time of explosives in variable conditions. The criterion is verified as correct by a large-scale field test.

Ghana contains auriferous belts which cover 51 800 km2 of its small area of 239 400 km2. From 1493 to 1600 35.5% of the world gold production was from the Gold Coast (renamed Ghana in 1957). This dropped to 8.9% from 1701-1800. For the past fifteen years annual production has averaged less than 2% of the world total. By 1985 only four gold mines were operating, compared with 45 in 1934 and 11 in 1945. Since 1987 Ghana has experienced a boom in gold mining activities. By 1991, 83 new companies had acquired prospecting licences. At least five new companies have started large-scale production. About 650 licensed small-scale mining groups are in operation. The economic and technological factors that have contributed to the decline of gold production in Ghana are discussed. A summary is given of the methods used to mine and recover gold. These cover small-scale workings, dredging, open cast operations and underground mining. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and the future of gold mining in Ghana are considered.

One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

he cathodes produced are of electrorefined grade; metallographic structure and surface roughness are controlled to a depth of 1.3 cm (single-side deposits); silver levels in the cathode are regulated by the presence in solution of Cl- and Br- ions; organics must be used at very low concentrations (around 0.1 mg/l with a consumption of about 0.01 mg/l/hr). The required concentrations of additives were established according to a well-defined strategy based on the consumption of organics at the cathode by a mass transfer limited-process.

For a criterion to be useful it must either demonstrate directly the role of exhalative processes in the formation of a deposit or describe a unique attribute of exhalative deposits. Few of those employed in previous investigations entirely satisfy either condition. The limitations of three of the most frequently employed criteria are illustrated by studies of the geology of the King Island Scheelite deposit in Tasmania.

The Chinese coal industry is the largest coal producer in the world. The total production in I995 was 1.28 bnt. On the way towards introducing a market economic system, this mature industry is facing major challenges. The main problems are a large surplus of manpower, shortage of current assets and capital, low productivity, high casualties and a huge deficit. This paper discusses the present situation and the future developments in the Chinese coal industry. The current policy can be stated as ‘rapidly developing the state collieries and improving the village and private mines; integrated development to achieve an economic operating scale and encouraging a diversified economy; rapidly exploiting and developing in the North west and South west; promoting productivity and efficiency; welcoming multi-sources and types of investment; setting up coal exchange markets; and the careful control of resources and the environment'.

The reduction of naturally weathered ilmenite concentrate occurs in two steps: reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, followed by reduction of Fe2+ to Fe. Small amounts of a magnetic phase were also observed and may correspond either to an Fe3O4-FeTiO3 ilmenite phase or to an Fe3O4-Fe2TiO4 spinel phase. The total amount of metallic iron produced after 12 hr was only 50% of the total iron present in the sample.

In pursuit of solving the development rate problem the coal industry has investigated various development systems. While all the systems may improve the development rate they may not necessarily he cost effective. This paper carries out an economic analysis by developing cost models for present and future development systems for retreating longwall faces with particular reference to Australian longwalls. A critical cost analysis of various development systems is presented by taking into consideration all the costs associated with development systems. The costs have been divided into equipment, face and panel services, belt and structure, wages, roof and rib support, ventilation, consumables, power and maintenance. The annualised cost of various equipment has been obtained on the basis of depreciation rates prescribed by the Australian Taxation Office.
