Mines are facing fresh challenges over how they deal with the huge quantities of water consumed. industry analyst Frost and Sullivan, demand for treatment equipment and services alone is expected to be worth US$3.6bn by 2016, while a report by consultancy Bluefield Research estimates that the total mine water market - which includes water infrastructure such as reservoirs, pipelines and dewatering systems as well as the equipment and services - will be worth US$17bn by the end of 2019. The ironmasters of America had asked the Iron and Steel Institute to visit the USA. The Council decided it was not possible to accept, but Mr. Bell visited; this is an account of his trip. Topics covered include transport, charcoal, coal measures, coal, anthracite, bituminous coal, flux, magnetic iron ore, specular iron ore, limonite, red hematite, clay ironstone, black band ironstone, smelting works, blast furnaces of Pennsylvania, Lake Champlain furnaces, Lake Superior furnaces, Cleveland furnaces, Pittsburg furnaces, Missouri furnaces, and those of the southern states. He goes on to describe Catalan hearths, malleable iron works, Bessemer works, the Blair steel process, and labour.

"Prior to the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa in 1916 little attention was paid to the dust hazard and the necessity for its suppression in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines. Such precautions as were observed for the elimination of dust were related rather to the prevention of lead poisoning, which, in the early days of Broken Hill when large tonnages of lead carbonate ore were being won, was rather prevalent. Ventilation and hygiene followed the general practice in this and most foreign countries.This paper covers incidence and action since 1918, considering medical aspects and operating aspects. "

The object of the paper is to describe the standards of quality that should be specified in ordering material ordinarily required for colliery use, and also the qualities most suitable for particular purposes. Tables are presented of British Standard tests for wrought iron grades A, B and C, Admiralty tests for iron in chain, the quality of material for wheels and axles, and the composition and mechanical properties of wrought iron, Armco (ingot) iron and drawbar-gear steel. A probe suitable for on-line measurements of gas hold-up in industrial flotation systems has been developed. It is based on an open cell for measurement of slurry-gas conductivity and a novel syphon cell for measurement of slurry-only conductivity. The desired behaviour of the two cells was demonstrated and estimates of gas hold-up were shown to be in good agreement with independent measurements. The gas hold-up probe was used as a diagnostic tool to assess the operation of flotation columns. Differences in gas hold-up between baffled sections in two industrial columns were detected

Guidance is given to the engineer or geologist who is not a specialist in numerical analysis but who is interested in using numerical modelling tools or in employing someone to analyse the stresses, displacements and failure in the rock surrounding underground excavations. A numerical approach is presented for predicting the liberation of phases during comminution, with direct calculation of a liberation spectrum giving the fraction of the particulate system in each narrow size-composition class. The numerical model uses a Poisson flat process for stochastic generation of the non-convex three-dimensional Poisson polyhedral textures and the system of fractures that give rise to convex fragments. With this numerical approach, there is no need to assume random uniform isotopic fracture (lack of selective liberation); only computational geometry primitives are exploited for the derivation. The agreement with relationships obtained previously under the random uniform isotopic fracture hypothesis demonstrates that the approach is capable of deriving full liberation spectra directly. Both volumetric and superficial composition can be calculated

"The mechanism of joint action of a frother (alpha-terpineol) and a collector (ethyl xanthate) in the flotation of chalcocite has been examined. In order to study the dynamic effects of frother and collector in bubble-particle collisions, the following aspects were investigated : determination of zeta-potential. Measurements of the thickness of fluid film on the surface of chalcocite and adsorption of xanthate, as influenced by alpha-terpineol, induction time and flotation versus concentration of alpha-terpineol and ethyl xanthate.The mechanism of the adsorption-desorption phenomenon on chalcocite with regard to non-ionic molecules, e.g. a-terpineol, has been considered, and the influence of this on the stage and thickness of the intervening wet layer between a bubble and a particle, changing the probability of collision and attachment, is suggested."

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. Extension of the technique into three-dimensions and its application to realistic problem sizes are discussed

During the construction of storage caverns, and during their lifetime if the use to which they are put so requires, it is necessary to provide adequate ventilation to ensure the safety and comfort of the underground workforce. An analysis of likely contaminants during construction has indicated that where a large facility is situated in a rock mass of even moderate temperature climatic conditions are likely to be the limiting factor during most of the mining operation and atmospheric pollution when blasting is undertaken. Possible options for improvement are increased air flow, cooling of intake air and reduction of the heat source by altering the number and type of haulage units employed in the cavern. Local solutions are an alternative approach where heat problems are confined to a few specific locations

One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

A study of samples from three sectors of the mine, which was worked from Roman times to 1991, revealed different textures, mineral associations and distributions of trace elements in the sulphides. In the last decade before closure, grades of sphalerite concentrate were in the range 51.67-53.30% Zn and 2.21-2.86% Pb and of galena concentrate 69.43-71.62% Pb and 4.70-8.36% Zn, while the estimated by-product germanium content of sphalerite concentrates sold was 300-400 g/t. Passing the different run-of-mine materials through the same concentrator flowsheet produced middlings and tailings during the preconcentration processing. Separate and alternative treatment of run-of-mine products would have yielded improved recoveries of sphalerite and galena and better values of by-product germanium and cadmium

Errors in ore reserve estimation can occur during drilling and sampling, sample preparation and analysis, geological logging and modelling, database construction, statistical or geostatistical evaluation, selection of economic parameters, selection of ore reserve method and assessment of mining constraints. Core sample recovery can be a major source of error, and it is proposed that the modelling of grade, metal accumulation and thickness should be accompanied by the modelling of core recovery (or core loss) so that for each ore block a weighted block recovery factor is obtained. This gives a good indicator of the reliability of a reserve estimate. It is suggested that a resource reliability rating (RRR) system be established to quantify what is meant by geological assurance and to combine this with an estimate of the precision of estimation as gained by geostatistical analysis. Proven and probable minable reserves would be those with an RRR better than 50% and a precision of estimation better than 20%

Ore reserves are inadequately defined. Geological reconnaissance and pre-feasibility mining work generate a broad range of valid tonnage estimates, many published for the benefit of various interests, who may view all figures as reserves. This work reviews the regular estimation of tonnages, grades and relevant factors for single deposits. A consistent framework of definition is suggested which, by conforming to the known structures of feasibility studies and long-range plans, avoids the pitfalls of over-categorisation and of unrealistic promises. Applications are based on North American experience but are intended for general use

Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.
