In this study, zeta potential and contact angle measurements of pyrite before and after interacting with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans are carried out to investigate the changes in its surface properties. The results show that, after pyrite interacting with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and its metabolite, the surface electricity of pyrite changes obviously, resulting in a notable shifting of isoelectric point to lower pH value, but the contact angle varies little. Bacterial protein plays the most important role in the interaction. This work is helpful to disclose the mechanisms of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans de-pressing pyrite flotability.

MIBC and sodium metasilicate are used as a frother and a dispersant in coal flotation respectively. In order to study interaction between them, flotation experiments were performed on fine coal (<150 microns). It was found that if the frother (MIBC) dosage is in excess of a certain limit, it has an activation effect on the gangue minerals associated with coal. In addition, it was found that however sodium metasilicate can disperse clay slimes eliminating slime coating, but in the case of excess dosage, could intensify activation effect of MIBC, which is undesirable in coal flotation. "Process automation as an engineering discipline is more than control systems since it includes industrial instrumentation, such as sensors, transmitters and actuators, as well as control and supervision systems, collection and transmission of data and real-time software applications to supervise and control the operation of plants or industrial processes. In the last several decades, accelerated technological development has provided a variety of software and hardware tools to aid development, maintenance and continuous improvement of automated systems. These developments however seldom reach their full potential in real plants. There are many factors to be considered, among them human capital specific training and the organization model. In this paper, a methodology for training engineers in advanced control and supervision of flotation plants is presented based on study of the application of these technologies in hybrid pilot plants. Since experimentation in real plants may present undesirable risks and costs, and simulation studies are usually limited to some unrealistic conditions, a laboratory where on-line measurements of the hydrodynamic behaviour of a pilot plant is mixed with phenomenological models has been created. In this form, an environment as close as possible to a real plant can be recreated. A flotation column and a circuit of three pneumatic cells are fully instrumented and connected to a PLC and PC network. In the control room, students learn applications of classical PID control in a DCS environment, advanced predictive control, on-line process operation diagnosis, fault analysis, virtual sensors and expert-fuzzy systems. Several undergraduate and graduate courses and theses are supported by this Process Control Laboratory infrastructure. Examples of these applications are discussed."

Particle characteristics such as size, density, liberation and magnetic susceptibility play vital role in magnetic separation technique. To understand the performance of magnetic separation process for chromite beneficiation industry, particle characteristics need to be analysed. However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming task, thus only minimal amounts of this type of data are available in the literature. Several new methods are being developed, that will produce the required mineralogical and liberation data to provide processing information rapidly and inexpensively. Among these, QEMSCAN is a unique and advanced characterisation equipment used for liberation analysis for different ore whereas S.G. Franz Isodynamic Separator for determining the magnetic susceptibility. In Indian chromite deposits, the content of iron bearing minerals in the ore is typical which controls the Cr:Fe ratio in the product while treating in gravity based beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, detailed characterisation of two distinct chromite ore samples from Sukinda chromite deposit, India, was investigated which includes advanced mineral characterisation using QEMSCANand magnetic susceptibility measurement by using Frantz Isodynamic separator, etc.. Presence of haematite and gibbsite along with chromite mineral were identified as major gangue minerals in the high grade ore from XRD pattern whereas Goethite, Quartz, Haematite, Kaolinite, Ringwoodite identified in the low grade ore. The mass magnetic susceptibility of low grade ore is very high 5.2 cm3/g compared to 2.7 cm3/g for high grade ore, due to the presence of abundant quantity of iron bearing minerals. Subsequently, these two types of ore were subjected for magnetic separation for improving Cr:Fe ratio by using different magnetic separators viz. induced roll magnetic separator, wet high intensity magnetic separator, rare earth roll magnetic separator, rare earth drum magnetic separator. The results of magnetic separation studies indicated that, Cr: Fe ratio of the chromite ores can be improved to 3.99 and 1.97 from the feed assaying 3.09 and 1.29 respectively. Studies on rare earth roll magnetic separator indicated that both the ores were upgraded to a maximum Cr:Fe ratio level at optimised condition. "Traditionally minerals processing equipment, such as jigs, are studied by characterising the feed and products from these processes. With this approach important details on the mechanisms of a process can be overlooked since assumptions have to be made on the internal operations of the equipment. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to track a particle’s movement inside a closed vessel. PEPT makes it possible to observe the inner workings of a process, providing new information that was unattainable only a few years ago. Jigging has long been considered as one of the most difficult mineral processing techniques to model, due to the complexity of the mechanisms contributing to the separation of minerals during the jigging process. In this investigation PEPT was used to study the particle flow inside a laboratory batch jig. The aim was to determine if the particle trajectories could provide new insight into the jigging and its mechanisms. Three dimensional particle trajectories were observed with spatial and temporal resolution high enough to see details of the individual pulses during jigging. It was found that the pulse height is very dependent on the position in the jig bed. The vertical component from the trajectories showed the rate at which particles move through the jig bed (stratification rate) and it was seen that the density of a particle affects the stratification rate more that the particle’s size and that the shape in the range that was tested had little to no influence. Other phenomena such as a circular flow pattern was observed inside the jig and it was found that smaller lower density particles are affected by this circular flow pattern which tend to disperse these particles throughout the jig bed. Visualising the flow inside a jig by means of PEPT has shown to be instrumental in the deeper understanding of the process."

"The most important metals in the jewelry sector are undoubtedly gold and silver. As a result of workmanship work done in the jewelry industry, the tiny metal and jewel fragments and metallic powders are scattered. Given the prices of gold and silver on the market, the dust that emanates from these workshops is of great importance. Gold recycling has become as important as raw material production within the mass market and gold production industry. In 2016, 29% of the world gold supply has been obtained through recycled gold production. Waste derived from jewelry activity is included in this category, and represents an essential component of this percentage. In the scope of this study, the recovery possibilities of Au and Ag from jewelry sweeps floor sample was investigated using flotation method. In the experiments, optimum pH value, particle size, the effect of dispersant, type and amount of reagent were investigated. As a result of these studies, it was determined that the optimum pH value was 6.5 and the particle size was -212 microns. It was observed that the most suitable reactive combination was Aero 242 and Aerophine 3418A and Na2SiO3 has no positive effect on recovery of Au and Ag as a dispersant agent. As a result of tests, a final concentrate containing 268 ppm Au and 2122 ppm Ag was obtained with 81.4% and 74.5% recovery respectively. INTRODUCTION Because of the softness of pure gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. On the other hand, gold has some special chemical properties which in normal conditions, don’t react with water, dry or humid air, oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, hydrogen, fluorine, iodine, sulfur and hydrogen. In these days, gold is used in different sectors like jewelry, electronics, finances and investing, dentistry, medicine, aerospace, awards & status symbols. According to Deutsche Bank Research, the primary usage of gold is jewelry. It has been used to make ornament and jewelry for thousands of years. In this sector craftsmen learned that alloying gold with other metals like copper, platinum and silver to increase gold’s durability. "Rapid depletion of high grade iron ores coupled with the increasing demand for the blast furnace grade iron ore in recent times has shifted the research focus on the development of appropriate technologies for the utilization of low - grade alumina rich iron ore slimes. These slimes are currently being dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina content. Typical constituent minerals present in the Indian iron ore slimes are hematite, goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite. Considering the fine particle size distribution (<37 microns) in the slimes, selective dispersion-flocculation seems to be one of the most appropriate process which has been explored by us. We present our successful results on a natural iron ore slime sample obtained from one of the mines in India. We have been able to achieve a concentrate assaying >67% Fe, and <3% Al2O3 and 2.8% loss on ignition (LOI) from the slime sample assaying 60.4% Fe, 7.7% Al2O3 and 5.45% LOI with an Fe recovery of 62-69% simply by adjusting the pulp pH. We have scaled up the process to a semi batch scale as a prelude to commercialize it for the beneficiation of low grade iron ore slimes."

Understanding how cationic surfactants affect the interfacial behavior of quartz is important in mineral processing and environmental engineering. This paper presents the results of a study of the effect of the molecular structure of cationic surfactants on the interfacial behavior of finely ground natural quartz. Most of the experimental work involved the determination of zeta potentials and the stability of quartz suspensions. Some measurements of induction times and the flotation response of coarser particles are also included. How these surfactants affect interfacial behavior is discussed in terms of adsorption mechanisms. The molecular structure (number of hydrocarbon chains, type of ionic head group, number of ionic head groups on the molecule) of these reagents was found to significantly affect their surface activity.

"Purification of zinc leachate plays a predominate role in zinc leaching refineries, to produce impurity free cathode sheets. As a part of such purification sequences, copper cementation with zinc dust is the preliminary step, since the presence of copper will preferentially deposit during zinc electro deposition and has the effect of reducing current efficiency. The cake thus produced is being accumulated as an inventory, due to invariable market and leading to space constraints & hazardous ambience. Hence, a project has been taken up for in-house generation of copper sulphate solution through ammonical leach followed by solvent extraction process and utilizing it as an active promoter for zinc sulphide flotation in Hindustan Zinc’s own captive mines. Cold purification cake majorly contains copper (30-40%) along with zinc (10-20%) and cadmium (2%). Confirmation to the above statement, photomicrographs of purification cake also confirmed the major presence of copper in metallic or oxidized form. In present work ammoniacal carbonate leaching of purification cake followed by solvent extraction using diketone based solvent has been studied under the influence of various parameters viz., temperature, agitation, pulp density, ammonia, CO2 dosages, solvent concentration, and impact of w/s zinc on leaching and solvent extraction. Leaching kinetics determined based on shrinking core model. Chemical reaction at unreacted core was found to be the rate controlling step. The estimated activation energy was found to be 24 KJ/mol. Leached copper has been extracted by solvent extraction with a ß diketone based solvent and is stripped with sulfuric acid as concentrated copper sulfate solution. The above established R&D findings are successfully implemented in the Commercial plant with a treatment capacity of two tons of cold purification cake per batch. Till now 500 MT of Purification cake has been treated, and generated 6500 MT of copper sulphate (55 g/l Cu), with final Cu recoveries between 87-90%."

The Kiruna area is an important mining province in northern Sweden, which is dominated by Fe- and Cu-Au deposits. Economically most important for the region, are the apatite iron ores with an annual production of c. 43 M ton of crude Fe-ore and a total production of more than 2000 M ton of ore the last 100 years. The apatite iron ores in the Kiruna area are dominated by either Magnetite or Haematite and contain varying amounts of apatite giving them a content of Fe and P, which varies between 30-70 % and 0.05-5 %, respectively. A typical geochemical feature of the ores is the strong enrichment of REE that is caused by a high content of REE in apatite and the occurrence of Allanite and Monazite containing 22.4 and 69.8 wt% REO, respectively. At Kiirunavaara, the content of REE in apatite varies between 0.07 to 1.57 wt% REO with a dominance for the light rare earths. The variation in REE-content of apatite depending on textural and paragenetic aspects is not known but apatite grains may display a strong LREE-depletion due to hydrothermal alteration. Monazite occurs as rod-shaped or tabular inclusions in apatite and is suggested, to have formed in response to hydrothermal alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. Inclusions are mainly found in the central part of apatite grains occurring in veins and schliren, while they are rare in apatite occurring disseminated in the ore. Monazite also occurs as larger grains outside apatite and together with Allanite is found in texturally and paragenetically different settings within the ore. These occurrences of REE-minerals may largely be a product of LREE mobilized by alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. However, REE-minerals including Allanite and Monazite might also have formed directly from late magmatic fluids. The use of continuous discharge centrifugal concentrators introduced in the early 1990’s for recovery of gold associated with sulphides has introduced a novel application niche for gravity concentration which could not be realized with the low mass yield batch and semi-continuous concentrators. A typical application is scavenging gold associated with sulphides from flotation tails which has potential to increase productivity by reducing gold loss to tailings and lower grinding cost by using a coarser grind. However, the full potential of this technology has not been fully exploited partly due to the lack of reliable small sample procedures to demonstrate applicability. This paper introduces a bench-scale procedure developed to characterize the Knelson Continuous Variable Discharge concentrator (CVD) for scavenging gold from flotation tails. The procedure code named gravity release analysis was derived from standard flotation release analysis. It is a modification of the gravity recoverable gold and gravity amenability test in order to best simulate continuous centrifugal concentration. Based on this iterative procedure, a gravity release index similar to the flotation rate constant, for measuring individual mineral gravity susceptibility for an ore is introduced which can be a useful quantitative measure to both predict application of centrifugal concentration and for plant design. The gravity release analysis procedure was tested on a polymetallic flotation plant tailing at Myra Falls, BC, Canada and results show that it can predict CVD performance. The gravity release index for gold was observed to decrease with each successive cleaner stage showing that the initial stages recover liberated gold whilst successive runs recover gold associated with sulphides and or gangue. The difference in magnitude of the gravity release index for different mineral species shows the species separable by centrifugal concentration.

China is a country with abundant resources of tungsten, taking one of the world?s top-positions regarding both the total reserve and the amount of industrial production. China?s tungsten resources occur mostly in multi-metallic deposits rather than in single-metallic deposits. China?s multi-metallic tungsten ores have the characteristics of coexistence with other valuable components such as molybdenum, bismuth, copper, sulfur and fluorite. These ores are usually low in grade and difficult to process. The technological challenge in mineral processing lies in separation of multi-metallic components in these complex ores and a comprehensive utilization of natural resource. Several cases of industrial practice of processing China?s typical multi-metallic tungsten ores are presented.

Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

The percentage of leached zinc in massive zinc oxide ores (11.7% Zn, >2 mm) is up to 73.3 % in 120 days. Alternatively, crushed to -0.154 mm, mixed with cement 5% (wt), pelletized and solidified. The diameters of the pellets obtained are between 5 mm to 8 mm. When the pellet solidification periods are 3 days, 10 days and 45 days respectively, the alkaline leaching rates of zinc in the pellets are up to 95.8%, 89.1% and 76.4% respectively. Decreasing the solidification time can re-duce reaction time, increase dissolution of zinc in pellets and lower the effect of initial zinc concentration on leaching rate. The experiment results show that the minimum solidification time is three days, and the kinetic study indicates that alkaline leaching of the low grade zinc oxide pellets is controlled by the diffusion of the leach liquor through the gangue layer in the whole leach process, and the apparent rate constants are 3.33×10-2 day-1, 9.18×10-3 day-1, 5.82×10-3 day-1 respectively.

In this study, thorium mineral that found in the complex ore deposit bearing bastnasite, fluorite, and barite from Eskisehir - Sivrihisar district has been tried to extract by using HCl and H2SO4 leaching. Ore sample of approximately 3 tons taken from the ore deposit has been homogenized in order to obtain composite samples by means of ore preparation techniques for experiments. Results of chemical analyses of composite samples are as given; 40.8% CaF2, 35.35% BaSO4, 2.01 Ce, 1.5% La, 0.39% and 0.1% Th. HCl and H2SO4 leaching processes have been performed to gain Th in the ore. For determining the optimum particle size, the samples have been ground under controlled conditions and brought to the sizes of 0.065, 0.2, 1 and 3 mm. Leaching experiments have been carried out in both HCl and H2SO4 acids without roasting and roasting at the temperature of 900°C for 1, 3 and 6 h retention times for all particle sizes determined before. In the experiments, the highest Th recoveries reached are as follows; 78.74% Th when H2SO4 and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 1 h roasting applied and 73.38% Th when HCl and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 3 h roasting applied. "Acidic solutions for chalcopyrite leaching contain cupric, ferrous and ferric ions, and the oxidizing power of the solutions is indicated by a redox potential, determined by the concentration ratio of ferric to ferrous ions. This paper reviews our previous studies on the redox potential dependence of chalcopyrite leaching in sulfuric acid solutions. Leaching experiments indicated that copper extraction rate was accelerated by cupric and ferrous ions , and was higher at potentials below a critical value (critical potential) in the presence of these ions. This was in good agreement with the results of electrochemical measurements, i.e. in the anodic polarization curves for a chalcopyrite electrode, active-passive behavior was observed when cupric and ferrous ions co-exist, but the activation at low potential did not occur without these ions (Figure 1). The analysis of the AC impedance spectra for chalcopyrite electrode indicated that a high-resistance passive layer grows on the chalcopyrite surface without cupric and/or ferrous ions, and that coexistence of these ions causes a formation of another product layer and inhibits the passive layer growth at low potentials.These results are explained by a reaction model assuming the formation of intermediate Cu2S due to chalcopyrite reduction and the subsequent oxidation of the Cu2S. The critical potential corresponds to the redox potential of the Cu2S formation and the predicted values matched with the experimental results. Catalytic effect of silver ions on chalcopyrite leaching was also discussed based on experimental results and the above model."

Enhanced gravity separators such as Falcon concentrator which uses additional centrifugal force, are the most common gravity concentration techniques used for fine particles processing. Hence, understanding the kinetics and separation mechanisms within these separators is of paramount interest. Recent research yielded a predictive physical model for the Falcon Ultra Fine (UF) which however does not explain some results obtained with industrial ores. This study aims to identify the mechanisms involved in Falcon UF separation with the objective of confirming or rejecting the hypotheses on which the current model is built and suggesting potential points of improvement. The Falcon UF kinetics is investigated through the processing of complex low-grade and fine-grained ores from the Altenberg tin deposit (Germany), the Tabuaço tungsten deposit (Portugal) as well as a synthetic iron ore. Saturation tests are performed on the Falcon UF by controlling the separation efficiency in terms of recovery and enrichment ratio with time or feed mass. Results show an evolution of Falcon UF performance with time in contradiction with the stationary separation hypothesis on which the physical model is based. Observation of the concentrate bed suggests the presence of erosion figures in furrows which may play locally an active role in the separation. In terms of Falcon UF separation timing, three phases can be distinguished. First, upon initial feeding of the bowl, a bed quickly grows unselectively and ultra-fine particles are ejected from the bowl until the bed reaches its final profile. Next, actual separation occurs with selective concentration of dense particles. Finally, capture sites saturate and recovery drops. The evolution of partition curves over time confirms the existence of two separation mechanisms. First, differential particles settling within the flowing film responsible for the ejection of small size particles during the whole separation cycle which is already accounted for in the physical model. The second mechanism involved may be explained by the action of lift force, neglected in the physical model, which acts preferentially on coarse particles deposited at the surface of the bed resulting in coarser particles being rejected in the tailings. Hence, the addition of a lift force component to the existing model is suggested to account for this second separation mechanism.

In sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid systems, sequence of floatability of three sulfate minerals is: barite>celestite>gypsum, in lauryl amine system is: gypsum>celestite>barite. XPS and infrared spectrum analysis are used to find that it is chemical reaction between sodium oleate and three minerals, physical adsorption on the surface of minerals for lauryl amine, and it is chelating reaction between salicylhydroxamic acid and three minerals possibly. Theoretical calculation on chemical bonds in crystal structures of three minerals is carried out, finding that breaking degree of Mn+?O2- in crystal structures of three sulfate minerals is closed related with floatability.

At times the phosphate industry, in Florida, encounters phosphate rock that gives lower than expected P2O5 recovery in the rougher plant section. The drop in recovery is typically 10% and as much as 30% or more. Variations in feed quality from day to day, shift to shift and even from drag-line to drag line, represent a challenge to the beneficiation plant operators and reagents? suppliers. Therefore, this characterization study has been initiated to identify the reasons for the differences in flotation behavior of such feeds. The study involves many samples to cover such variations. The characterization work includes: ? Mineralogical and chemical analysis; ? Size, shape, surface roughness and porosity analysis; ? Surface charge and surface contamination with other phases (minerals); ? Clay content and its relationship to phosphate and silica particles. The results correlated with flotation data and adsorption density measurements clearly establish the statistically significant variability in characteristic features that influence flotation response. This article discusses results from the above listed studies. On the basis of the obtained data, recommendations of practical approaches to overcome the problem of feed variability in phosphate flotation plants are delineated.

In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.
