The optimum performance in mineral processing plants usually demands the optimum size reduction, which is frequently achieved by a closed grinding circuit. Due to the difficulty associated with fine size classification, the size separation efficiency in closed grinding circuit is usually very low, which leads to huge circulating load and significant overgrinding. Recent development of Der-rick Stack Sizer has made an efficient fine size separation down to 200 mesh with a satisfactory screening capacity. With the efficient fine size separation with Derrick Stack sizer, the problems commonly associated with typical closed grinding circuit, including high circulating load and over-grinding, have been eliminated. Feedback from numerous Stack Sizer applications in iron ore industry indicated that, compared with conventional fine size classification equipment, the circulating load achieved by Derrick screen was usually decreased from approximate 300% down to 60% or so, while the iron recovery has been increased by 6% to 8% only by more efficient size separation in the closed grinding circuit. To study this phenomenon, this paper discusses the relationship between size classification, circulating load and mineral recovery in the closed grinding circuit. A simulation model to predict the improvement in the grinding circuit from more efficient screening is also introduced with this paper.

The physico-chemical characteristics of raw materials used for the production of iron ore pellets have a strong influence on the productivity of pelletization operations and on the quality of pellets. Since iron ores from different sources are used for making iron ore pellets and since the quality of the ores varies with time, there is a need to optimize and control pellet plant operations on a regular basis to achieve optimum productivity while maintaining pellet quality within the desirable specifications. In order to achieve this objective, a model-based on-line optimization system was implemented on two industrial scale induration furnaces. The optimization system consists of a rigorous mathematical model of the induration process, a model for the permeability of the bed of pellets, a statistical model for the quality of iron ore pellets and an optimization module based on sequential quadratic programming. The rigorous model is tested on-line using the wind-box temperature available real-time. The process was optimized to enhance induration furnace productivity for the given constraints on pellet quality parameters such as the cold compressive strength (CCS) and Tumble Index (TI), and other equipment design parameters. Process variables such as induration machine speed, cold air flow rate and hood temperature profile were used as the optimization variables. The on-line optimization system was successfully implemented in two industrial induration furnaces and lead to enhanced productivity. Details of the on-line optimization system and results of process optimization will be presented.

Despite the fact that nickel (Ni) laterites accounts for about 60 % of the world?s nickel mineralization, commercial processing of complex, low grade Ni laterite ores by conventional beneficiation (e.g. magnetic, electrostatic and flotation separation) still presents intractable challenges, particularly in heap leaching. Invariably, low grade laterite ores require aggressive hydrometallurgical techniques (e.g., highly acidic lixiviant leaching at ambient or elevated temperatures) for Ni and cobalt (Co) extraction. As a precursor to heap leaching, agglomeration of the multi-mineral phase feed particles into robust and porous granules of 4-10 m permeable bed, is essential. In the present work, several basic and applied studies of the agglomeration behavior of real Ni laterite ores and selected oxides and clay minerals (hematite, quartz smectite and kaolinite) which constitute the predominant host gangue phases of typical laterite ores are performed. Isothermal, batch agglomeration tests involving sulphuric acid solution as a binder were carried out to produce coarse, narrow-sized (5 ? 40 mm) granules which were well characterized. The influential role of feed ore characteristics (e.g., mineralogy/chemistry and primary particle size distribution) and binder composition (30 vs. 44% w/w H2SO4) and dosage (15-25 wt.%) in agglomeration behavior and granule properties were examined through several characterization techniques including granule size, compressive strength, bed percolation and re-wetting stability and 3-dimensional micro-structure analyses. Links between feed mineralogy/chemistry and size, binder formulation, agglomeration behavior, curing conditions and final granule properties and structural characteristics are established. The implications of the findings to Ni laterite plant agglomeration for enhanced heap leaching are discussed. "For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. "Mineral processing – the first technological stage of utilization of mineral – has a very long history. In particular, it revealed and reveals the continuous development and perfection of technological operations and process organization, comprising not only new design solutions and exploitation procedures but also, for example, perfected systems of control and automation as well as methods of process description and result evaluation. During the recent decades the attitude to mineral raw materials was clearly changed, both to the primary ones, i.e. minerals, and to the secondary ones, such as side products and waste, formerly considered useless and at present more commonly used. This results both from the appearance and growth of demand for more and more numerous components of mineral raw materials and also from the necessity of protection of natural resources, constituting the integral part of the system of sustained development of society.These circumstances, and especially the requirements concerning gaining some components which cannot be separated by means of “classical” (used for many years) technological processing operations and aiming at increasing the technological procedures, evoked the necessity of using new technological solutions, applying other basic operations, also the ones characteristic so far for other processing technologies, i.e. chemical, biotechnological and others.These development tendencies, in general commonly perceived, allow us to formulate an opinion that the former state of tasks and processes of mineral processing is being transformed into a qualitatively new form. It can be assumed that this process was signaled by a situation in which, due to the growing role of technological operations based on physicochemical phenomena (flotation and others), magnetic and electrical ones, etc., one should have observed that the former term of “mechanical processing” became inadequate for the real content of the notion determining the discussed stage of mineral utilization, so the adjective “mechanical” disappeared in most languages."

This paper will underpin the future development of intellectuals having greater understanding of patent law and legislation, IP rights, and innovation. To understand this idea, I present a case study of China?s progress in the last 31 years in the rare earth research, innovation, and simultaneously patents area. Rare earth elements (REE) are at the centre of high technology and are the next wave of world innovation. Much of modern society depends on rare earth elements through their use in computers, lasers, telecommunications, iPods, medical technology, military applications, and so on (Long et al, 2010). The rare earth research, a large research body is being provided by Chinese sources. China devoted three or four university centers to the study of rare earths (Lifton, 2009). These measures are all designed to keep China at the forefront of REE production, materials, technology, and innovation. As a result in the last fifteen years there has been a shift from a US-dominated REE industry patents to Chinese patents. The world must identify strategic areas of rare earth innovation and provide funding to firms and universities that conduct such research. Not only research and innovation is vital but filing patents and preserving IP rights for research and innovation is even more important. We (rest of the world) need a comprehensive strategy to guide the development of patent and IP rights for research and innovation. Small manganese ore bodies in south Odisha, India occurs both as stratiform and stratabound ore bodies. These two ore bodies show contrasting mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics. Stratiform type of Mn-ores consists of manganese, iron and silicate- phases in approximately same proportion. In contrast, stratabound ore bodies contain a high proportion of manganese oxides, silicates and phosphorus phases. Phosphorus is found within apatite in the stratabound ore bodies while in the stratiform ore it occurs as an adsorbed state with iron phase (goethite). Both ore bodies are low-grade (17-23% Mn) therefore do not have a market value. However, the stratabound ores are enriched in phosphorus (P2O5: >1%) compared to the stratiform ores. Both the ore types were processed through gravity, magnetic and roast reduction followed by magnetic separation techniques. The strata bound ore could be upgraded to 33% Mn from a feed of 23% by combination of dry and wet magnetic separation methods. But the phosphorus content also suits up (P2O5: 1.2%) in the processed product making it unsuitable for further use. The stratiform ores do not respond to either gravity or magnetic separation because of close association of manganese with iron phases. However, this could be beneficiated through roast reduction followed by magnetic separation. An ore with 17% Mn content could be upgraded to 40% Mn with a 42% yield and 78% recovery. The goethite, having phosphorus, converts to magnetite and is retained within the magnetic fraction, thereby reducing the concentration of phosphorus in the non-magnetic fraction, which becomes the product. This report demonstrates the influence of ore petrology in determining the up-gradational potential of manganese ore in the southern Odisha, India. Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.

"The Inco Matte Separation process was the first commercial application using mineral processing techniques to separate nickel from copper from a slow-cooled matte in Sudbury since 1945. In Inco Sudbury operations, bulk sulphide concentrate containing chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite and some gangue minerals is flash smelted and converted to Bessemer matte. During the controlled slow-cooling of the Bessemer matte, discrete mineral grains of new mineral phases are formed: copper sulfide precipitates as chalcocite (Cu2S), nickel sulfide as heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is also formed. Flotation is employed to separate Cc from Hz under high lime conditions (pH>12) with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother.A simplified matte separation flowsheet is as follows. After grinding, the Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is removed by magnetic separation. All precious metals are recovered in the metallic alloy. Following the rougher flotation, a Cu concentrate is produced after cleaner and re-cleaner flotation in mechanical and column cells. Two Ni concentrates are produced: a high-grade Ni product containing less than 0.8% Cu from the scavenger column tails and a low-grade Ni product containing 5% Cu from the middlings circuit tails. A stream containing the inseparable Cc and Hz from the middlings circuit is generated and recycled back to the smelter. The quantity of this stream is typically about 3% of total feed and can be as high as 5%, greatly decreasing the overall matte separation efficiency. The large mass of the recycle stream is a direct result of poor Cc/Hz separation selectivity in the middlings circuit. The middlings circuit, consisting of a thickener, a regrind mill and two columns, processes two streams: cleaner tailings and scavenger concentrates. The thickener contributes significantly to oxidation due to the long residence time of the pulp in this unit."

The application of High-Power Nanosecond Electromagnetic Pulses (HPEMP) irradiation in dressing of resistant gold- containing ores appears attractive as this technique provides for a significant increase in precious metal recovery (30-80% for gold and 20-50% for silver), therewith helping reduce both energy consumption and the cost of products. The prospects for applying pulsed power technologies in the mineral processing in order to increase the contrast between the flotation properties of raw minerals dictate the need to perform special studies of the effect of HPEMP on the structural state, phase composition, and physical and chemical properties of surfaces of sulfide minerals as the main carriers of precious metals. This study deals with plausible mechanisms of the micro- and nanophases formation on the surfaces of sulfide minerals under the effect of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) with high electric field strength ~107 V/m. This paper discusses reasons for the changing of flotation behavior of natural pyrite and arsenopyrite during the pulsed-power treatment. It was concluded that HPEMP treatment may be regarded as a tool to change the surface composition and sorption ability of collector (xanthate) onto mineral surface, and, therefore, it allows to control the hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface balance. Single mineral flotation tests have been shown the significant increasing of the pyrite recovery while the arsenopyrite was depressed. The results of gold containing pyrite (pyrrhotite)-arsenopyrite ore flotation in batch approve the decreasing of arsenic recovery in sulfide concentrate. Thermal treatment of mineral ores can initiate thermal phase transformations which can affect either their activation or deactivation, subsequently influencing their ability to dissolve in a leaching reagent. The formation of rutile and hematite from ilmenite minerals, for example, has been suggested to occur through a series of reduction and segregation reactions. This process has been used in beneficiating low-grade weathered ilmenite ores to higher grade rutile. Despite decades of re-search, the mechanism of this process is not well understood, because dissolved intermediates are poorly crystalline and are difficult to quantify, with the exception of the final rutile products. Previous studies have shown that disrupted intermediate phases, by thermal treatment, are most susceptible to reagent attack and can often demonstrate ?activation? effects. In this study, synchrotron based X-ray diffraction method was used to investigate in-situ and in real-time the transformation of ilmenite minerals to rutile and hematite during calcination. The rate of formation and disappearance of specific Bragg peaks during the reaction and thermal decomposition of the mineral were used to derive an understanding of the solid-state reactions. The effects of the mineral transformation were validated by laboratory based batch calcination and leaching in sulphuric acid. The results suggest that transformation of major mineral phases occurs within of specific window of operation and thermal treatment appears to influence the extent of activation and leachability of ilmenite minerals.

The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

Beach Placer Ilmenite is an important source for production of titanium metal, titania slag and pigment grade titanium dioxide. Besides, these well known applications for which Ilmenite is mined and processed, there are other emerging processes that are being tried for obtaining highvalue products. Synthesis of Ilmenite based materials for varistor applications and direct electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite to produce ferrotitanium are two such attempts being discussed in this work. In this paper, recent efforts undertaken to study the electrical and magnetic characteristics are discussed. Ilmenite, FeTiO3, is one of the mixed-valence transition metalbearing minerals, inwhich Fe can be in two different oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+.. Similarly, Ti can be in Ti3+ and Ti4+.Ilmenite is inherently suitable for making Varistors, which are devices, used for limiting the transient voltage surges in a circuit. Varistors produced from Ilmenite can withstand harsh environments seen in nuclear reactors and outerspace. Electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite can be used to prepare ferrotitanium directly without any reductant. The process essentially involves removal of oxygen from the mineral through electrolytic action using calcium chloride as electrolyte and graphite as anode. At a temperature of 950°C, it is shown to be possible that all the oxygen can be removed from the Ilmenite sample, which passes through the electrolyte, to form CO/CO2 at the anode. The process has immense potential for cost effective production of titanium metal as well. Results of the above developmental works are presented in this paper. "At present kimberlite ore is processed in crushers or grinding rolls with subsequent grinding in wet mills down to a size of 0.2 mm. The basic disadvantage of the standard diamond processing technology is that crushing kimberlite ore can damage the most valuable large diamonds of few carats. Tagged neutron method offers a possible solution to this problem. It allows detecting diamond inside kimberlite ore without its disruption. The results of the tests of the neutron separator prototype carried out at the Lomonosov processing factory of PJSC Severalmaz are discussed. The possibility to detect the diamond in the rock whose size is 10 times larger than the size of the diamond is demonstrated.INTRODUCTION At present standard diamond processing technology implies disintegration of kimberlite ore in crushers or grinding rolls down to a size of 0.2 mm. It inevitably leads to high probability that large and most valuable diamonds could be damaged. The fraction of diamonds which lost integrity in the process of ore enrichment could be as large as 35-65% [1]. Tagged neutron method (TNM) [2] offers a possible solution to this problem. It allows detecting diamond inside kimberlite ore without its disruption. The main idea of the TNM is irradiation of an object by fast 14.1 MeV neutrons from binary nuclear reaction d + 3H ?4He + n (1) and detecting (tagging) the 4He (a-particle) that accompanies neutron. That gives possibility to determine direction of the neutron momentum. Those tagged neutrons irradiate kimberlite ore under investigation and produce gamma rays via inelastic scattering reactions with nuclei"

"Expert Online is a software system that makes use of novel artificial intelligence technology, known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES), to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining the controller actions. Expert Online will also take on the more difficult task of explaining the complex process behaviour to the operator in simple language.The primary functions of Expert Online are to serve as a training tool and an online assistant to operators. However, it is also expected to be of value to supervisors and plant managers.A number of additional features are envisaged, including different operating modes, fault detection, speech synthesis and advanced message filtering. Expert Online will increase the operator’s knowledge of the process and his/her understanding and acceptance of the complex control systems. Users would be supplied with relevant and timeous information required to make informed decisions to ensure smooth plant operation.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

"Oxidized nickel ores are important source for nickel production in Russia. Considerable explored reserves of oxidized nickel ores with relatively low nickel content, about 0.6-1.4%, are concentrated in the Ural region of Russia. Conventional process flowsheet with the use of blast matte smelting, applied in particularly by JSC “Ufaleynickel”, proves itself as extremely low-margin technology. This paper will examine development of a new more cost-efficient process involving integrated treatment of oxidized nickel ores using the ore from Serovskoye deposit as an example. Target products of this process are hydrate residues containing up to 15 % of nickel and 0.3 % of cobalt, as well as saleable salts of magnesium sulphate and ammonium suplphate. This innovative process includes roasting of a mixture composed of ground ore and sulphuric acid at 650 °?. Sulphate roasted product is then leached in a weak sulphuric acid solution with the following separation of liquid from insoluble solids. Sulphate solution is neutralized by aqua ammonia in two stages until media pH is 3.0-3.5 and 7.5-8.0 with detachment of iron- and nickel-bearing hydrate residues respectively. The mother solution is boiled out resulting in salt crystals which are then dried and roasted at 500-600 °? to obtain magnesium sulphate. The gases generated during salts roasting are captured with production of ammonium sulphate. The developed technology demonstrates higher potential in terms of its economics and eco-efficiency comparing with the conventional process. The main reasons for the required technical upgrade of the plants processing oxidized nickel ores is depletion of rich ores, increase of energy resources costs, amplification of environmental and production standards. Due to this, transition from conventional pyrometallurgy to cost-effective hydrometallurgical technologies of ore liberation and solutions processing is logical and corresponds to the worldwide practice of Ni production from oxidized nickel ores."

The low-grade nickel resource is very abundant in the western China. To make the best of the low grade nickel ore, we studied the process mineralogy and beneficiation process of nickel ore in the Yangliuping of Sichuan province. The grade of nickel is 0.45% in the nickel ore and the nickel exists in the sulfide including pyrrhotite, nickel pyrite, chalcopyrite primarily. The nickel distributes in pentlandite and magnetite over 90% and the copper does in the chalcopyrite over 95%. The carri-er minerals of useful elements tend to concentrate in space for concentration. As is shown in grain-size analysis of three major minerals, there are some more fine-grained grains with the percent of from 10% to 15% (<40 µm) and from 3.5% to 5.5% (<20 µm). So there will be some smaller size disseminated sulfide minerals difficulty to liberate in the process of concentration. The liberation degree of sulfide is not high and there are much associativity in the sulfides. Therefore, we should reclaim the sulfide aggregation dominating as pentlandite when concentrating. In addition, the sulphide minerals is so brittle that we should take care of preventing from crashing when grinding. The gangue mineral is mostly metamorphic mineral including serpentine, chlorite and amphibole which is easy to be argillization and difficult to concentrate.

"Until the advent of intensive cyanidation, gold gravity concentrates were generally treated by tabling. The table concentrates were smelted while table middlings and tailings were recycled to the milling circuit for further grinding and subsequent leaching in the CIP/CIL circuit. Gold recovery on production tables is relatively low, often only 30 percent, and rarely above 60 percent. Significant factors in tabling performance are; mineralogy and the operator’s experience and ability. Units have been developed by Gekko Systems to treat both batch and continuous gold concentrates. Unit sizes are determined by leach kinetics and the required residence time of the concentrate in the unit.Gekko commenced the commercialisation of intensive leaching of gravity gold concentrates in 1997 with the first commercial prototype of the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR). Over 20 units are now installed worldwide with half that number on the African continent. South African mines, South Deeps (Placer Dome WAJV) and Target (AvGold) have both installed InLine Leach Reactors. Ashanti Goldfields have placed the ILR on their standard equipment list and have six operating units with a seventh on order. AngloGold installed one of the first ILR production units at Morila in Mali.Gekko Systems successfully installed an ILR1000 Batch unit at the Antapite Mine in Peru in December 2002. The unit was installed to treat gravity concentrates and to replace a shaking table. Following installation, gravity gold recovery increased from 15% to 40% of total gold. The unit was operational from start up and the first gravity batch treated achieved 98% gold recovery. The gravity concentrates also have a high silver content and 95% recoveries on silver were also achieved.Preliminary testwork identified that the concentrates required additional oxygen to achieve peak performance. As a result of optimisation work in the laboratory, leach kinetics in the ILR have been excellent with only 6 hours residence required to achieve maximum gold extraction."
