At projecting mining-concentrating complex at the deposit ?Zapadnoye? (Russia) it was considered to enable an opportunity of refusal from conventional SAG-mills. First time a scheme of gold bearing ore destruction using Roller Press RP 5-100/90 had been developed and integrated. The plant was launched in summer 2003 and presently it has achieved designed technological parameters, processing throughput comes to 1 million tons of the ore per year.

One of the most significant behaviour of a crushing plant is the constant variation in the process. The variation is caused by two major effects. The first and constantly changing is the rock material properties. During operation rock material with different strength and particle size distribution is fed to the plant which makes the performance of the equipment to vary. The second and more slowly changing variation is caused by wear on the processing equipment. These effects must be predicted in order to be able to optimise a crushing plant. This paper demonstrates how Monte Carlo simulation can be utilised to study and operate crush-ing plants. By introducing Monte Carlo simulation the varying process can be study and also optimised. To maintain the optimised process performance supervision is needed. This paper demonstrates how results from the Monte Carlo simulation can be utilised for process supervision. Charts for process measurements can for example be derived. These can then be used to guide decision making and understand how the variation and performance of the plant changes over time.

The flotation of quartz particles was studied over the particle size range from 0.5 µm to 1000 µm and for advancing water contact angles between 0º and 83º. Flotation was performed in a column and in a Rushton turbine cell. Particle contact angle threshold values, below which the particles could not be floated, were identified for the particle size range 0.5~1000 µm, under different hydrodynamic conditions. The flotation response of the particles, either in a column or in a mechanically agitated cell with a similar bubble size, was comparable. Turbulence plays a role, as does bubble-particle aggregate velocity and bubble size. The stability of the bubble-particle aggregate controls the maximum floatable particle size of coarse particles. For fine particles, the flotation limit is dictated by the energy required to rupture the intervening liquid film between the particle and bubble. Flotation of very fine and large particles is facilitated with small bubbles and high contact angles. These results greatly extend our earlier observations and theoretical predictions.

Hydrocyclones have been used extensively for more than 100 years to classify mineral slurries for recirculation in grinding circuits. Sometimes hydrocyclone classification is carried out in more than one stage to improve the efficiency of classification. Factors affecting separation efficiency include fluid velocity, density, and viscosity as well as the mass, size, and density of the particles. The geometric configuration also affects its efficiency; it includes parameters like cyclone diameter, underflow and overflow diameter, position of vortex finder, height of the cyclone, feed inlet geometry, and diameter etc. Besides changes in the basic parameters some modifications in cyclone has also been introduced from time to time which have affected its efficiency, some of these are :-(i).Introduction of magnetic force along with the centrifugal and drag force to control the flow of the magnetic particles inside the chamber.(ii). Introduction of sparger, air is introduced in the chamber in the form of bubbles, to control the flow of fine particles and hydrophobic particles. (iii). Introduction of dilution technologies for the dilution of thickened underflow. (iv).Introduction of new model. In spite of wide use and simple geometry, the real working principle of hydrocyclone chamber is extremely complex because of the swirling turbulent flow inside the device. In order to get more knowledge about hydrocyclones and to increase its efficiency, past 10-15 years simulation techniques are being developed. The simulation models also enabled a deeper insight into the static and dynamic behavior of hydrocyclones. Therefore, more emphasis on simulations by methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element method (FEM) is given. Overall, a status review of the work carried out on the analysis of hydrocyclone performance, modeling approaches and its contribution in the efficiency of mineral processing operation is highlighted.

The first decade of the 21st century was one of fundamentally changed dynamics for the minerals industry. Following intense globalization commencing in the late 20th century production is now concentrated into large businesses that can compete across geography in diverse commodities. Asian industrialization and urbanization is now the main driver of growth in demand for energy and materials. Demand for the output of these industries has risen sharply, reversing decade long trends to reduced real commodity prices. Supply responded with expansions of existing mining and processing operations, and large investment in new resource development. Development of new, lower grade or more remote resources was stimulated. Resource development by global entities in frontier environments reinforced the importance of effective forms of social contract, and of stronger environmental performance. The worst economic shock in decades provoked no significant pause despite large impacts on corporate ownership. State owned enterprises commenced unprecedented foreign direct investment in minerals and energy resources. A thrust towards resource nationalism re-emerged as governments sought to ensure that the export of state owned resources contributes more strongly to government revenue, reducing the burden of trade in scarce resources on other trade-exposed sectors. The unprecedented combination of forces at work has made future predictions difficult, with day-by-day volatility in anticipated corporate fortunes, and investment plans. The challenge for process innovation (and for exploration) has been to keep up, maintaining a lid on costs as lower grade and more challenging ore bodies are brought on quickly in a context of competition for land use, community expectations and continued care for natural and living environments. While new projects have provided the necessary platforms for implementation of innovative approaches, there is evidence that a gap may have emerged between the pace of growth and the pace of innovation. The history of a century of process innovation in the context of growth of output, declining resource grades and commodity prices is presented. The necessary conditions for accelerated process innovation are considered, and future needs and approaches are discussed. Keywords: process innovation, resource development

Coke combustion during sintering process is significantly governed by coke breeze size distribution, which in turn affect sinter quality i.e. sinter granulometry, Tumbler index, Reduction Degradation Index and Reducibility Index of sinter. To know the effect of microfines of coke breeze on sintering process parameters, pot sintering tests were conducted and it was found that when microfines are eliminated and optimum coke size (1-3mm) is used yield of sinter increased by more than 7%. Similarly productivity increased by 9%, the strength of sinter i.e. ISO Tumbler Index increased by 2.3% and +10mm sinter size increased by 5.5%. Controlling of microfines during crushing and by improving crushing index will result in improved quality and productivity of sinter with lesser amount of coke breeze. This paper describes that how to optimize solid fuel i.e. coke breeze consumption in sintering process through granulometry control. It is now well known that the size distribution of the particulate solid has a significant effect on the breakage behavior of particles in the wet as well as dry modes of ball milling operation. In the context of the size discretized batch grinding kinetic model, grinding behavior of particles is characterized by the breakage rate parameters, k, and breakage distribution parameters, B. Understanding the nature of variation of these two sets of parameters with particle size distribution is important for simulation and control of operation of production mills. However, so far it has not been possible to track the variation of both the set of parameters with grinding time simultaneously. In this paper an attempt has been made in this direction by using a modified functional form approach with time dependent constants. In the flotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions not only ionic strength but also chemical composition, flotation pH and mineral properties play an important role. As a result an improvement or depression may be observed. A strong improvement in the floatability of hydrophobic bituminous coals and other inherently hydrophobic minerals is characteristic for the "salt flotation process", which is carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions at natural pH and without addition of any flotation reagents. However, pH is a key factor when saline and hipersaline waters with hydrolyzing metallic ions are used as process water. In the case of flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater, molybdenite is strongly depressed by the Mg2+ hydrolysis products when pH is raised to depress pyrite. Process water with a high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, and this also includes seawater, have deleterious effect on the anionic flotation of industrial minerals with fatty acids. The flotation of potash ores is carried out in NaCl-KCl saturated brine (6-7 mole/L of NaCl and KCl) with the use of long-chain amines. Such a high electrolyte concentration changes dramatically the amine Krafft point making the collector insoluble in brine; its mode of action entirely differs from that in conventional flotation processes.

An effective process plan is an important part of maintaining consistent recoveries in mineral processing operations. Traditionally, Mineralogical studies are completed using chemical and metallurgical methods to monitor recovery and elemental distribution. The development of mineralogy and more efficient processes in mineral analysis techniques means that mineralogy is now more accessible as an efficient and comprehensive study tool. As operating costs increase and feed grades decrease it is important to maintain tight control of process and ensured maximum recovery is maintained at all times. Just a few days of losses in recovery caused by changes in ore type or processing conditions can have a large effect on total metal recovery and profit. Mineralogical audits can be used to minimize these losses by monitoring the fundamental behavior of feed ore on a regular basis. Smart use of mineralogical studies can develop mineralogical and ore type benchmarks in a detailed, which can be used in process control and monitoring. Geological ore types can be used to identify key mineralogical parameters that may be used in routine and cost effective analysis. Mineralogical systems ideally suited to this because of the depth of information on everything from modal mineralogy to locking/liberation characteristics and mineral associations. Mineralogical studies can equally be applied to specific unit operations within the process, which can allow more detailed information to be gathered on areas of the process that have been identified as critical. This will be especially effective for flotation or oxidation processes where process parameters can be very sensitive to small changes in mineralogy. Based on the differences in hardness and density of diaspore and aluminosilicate minerals which usually exist in Chinese diasporic bauxite, It is analysed that bauxite of this kind is difficult to be separated effectively by classification and normal gravity separation, and cyclonic centrifugal field was thus proposed to be carried out, in which classification can take place according to the size difference resulted from selective grinding, what?s more, the separation function according to density difference is expected to take effect at the same time, and then cyclonic separation tests for diasporic bauxite of A/S 4.39 and grinding 61.90% -0.074mm were carried out tentatively. The results showed that the accretion of feed pressure can offer strong enough centrifugal force for cyclonic separation with result that separation function according to density difference is effectively intensified, by the increasing of this parameter, underflow and overflow of A/S 7.64 and 2.18 can be processed at the same time, and the recovery of Al2O3 in underflow is 71.78%; judging by the flow ratio, the spatial locality envelope of zero vertical velocity do constringe to the vertical axis by the enlarging of diameter ratio of apex to vortex, overflow and underflow of A/S 2.08 and 6.5~7.0 can be processed by controlling this structural parameter, which is possible to offer a technological method for low-grade bauxite to de-sliming beforehand.

"This study was done from a sample of coal mined at the Vale-Mozambique mine, located in Moatize district, Tete Province. The aim of this work is to analyze the reagent system in the flotation of coal fines belonging to the Upper Chipanga layer (UC). Among coal processing methods, flotation stands out as one of the most important for the concentration of this material, in particular in the treatment of fine particles. The total feed of the Vale-Mozambique processing plant is 8,000 tph of coal, where 10% of this feed corresponds to the fine fraction that feeds the flotation circuit. The material used in this study had a particle size of 96% smaller than 0.25 mm. The reagents used in the flotation tests were betacol and diesel oil as hydrophobizing agents and MIBC as frother. The range of betacol concentrations in the first test phase was 200 g/t to 500 g/t, and in the second phase 200g /t to 500g /t while diesel oil and MIBC were kept constant at 300 g/t. The immediate analysis followed the Brazilian standards NBR 8289, NBR 8293, NBR 8290; and NBR 8299. The results showed that it is possible, from a feed with ash content around 22.84%, to obtain products with levels below of 10% ash, with a mass recovery around 50%. The recovery of carbonaceous matter was also evaluated and presented positive results. Complementing this study, the effect of H2O recovery was evaluated and it was observed that for the concentrations of betacol the recoveries ranged from 6 to 9%, and for diesel oil plus MIBC were 4 to 7%.INTRODUCTION Considering the increase in population and energy consumption as humanity has been living along the last decades and the consequent demand for non-renewable natural resources, it is clear the challenge of the mineral industry in the search for new technologies and improvement of the existing ones. This challenge is justified by the need for better industrial results and to meet the market specifications, taking into account the reduction of deposits with higher contents and the need for beneficiation of more complex ores, lower levels and lower release granulometry. Usually in these situations, processes already well-established as the gravimetric (Sampaio and Tavares, 2005) have not good results."

The traditional technological flow sheets for processing of ferrous quartzite (magnetite ores) al-low production of the iron concentrates with Fe content of 65%~68 % and recovery level about 55 %. The losses of iron with the tails of wet magnetic separation are related to hematite and quartz-magnetite particles, which are not extracted under low magnetic field employed. This work presents the results of the application of reverse cationic flotation for production of hematite concentrates with weak silica content from the tailings of wet magnetic separation of mag-netite. Fine particle size, complex mineralogy and presence of locked particles determine the impos-sibility of direct production of hematite concentrate by flotation or magnetic separation. The gravity concentration allows obtaining of iron concentrate from the well-prepared feed (size fraction -53+20 µm) but with very low recovery. Thus, hematite concentrates with weak silica content and satisfactory iron recovery were obtained by reverse cationic flotation, when it was fed with iron pre-concentrate produced by high gradient magnetic separation. The best flotation results were obtained by the use of formulations based on amines of different molecular structure that modulate the structure of adsorption layer, and favour a shifting of hydro-philic-hydrophobic balance on the surface of silicates with adsorbed starch and their preferential transfer into the froth product.

Due to the shortage of fresh water in the Middle East, seawater has been used as an alternative in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process requires about 7 m3 of water/mt ore. This article aims to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation. Natural pure francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz were characterized by chemical, thermal and x-ray diffraction analyses, surface area, solubility and zeta potential. Synthetic seawater was prepared with the major chemical composition similar to natural seawater as follow; 2.45% NaCl, 0.52% MgCl2, 0.41% Na2SO4, 0.116% CaCl2 and 0.07% KCl. Also, natural seawater was used in application. The point zero of charge was estimated at pH 6.5, 7.8, 9.2 and 2.2 for francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz, respectively. Calcium ions were released from the three minerals with Mg2+ and P2O5 3– released from dolomite and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The effect of individual cations and anions predominant in seawater are studied on individual mineral or group. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions should be controlled by soda ash addition. Sodium silicate improved the selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate of 34% P2O5, at 83% recovery with 0.61% MgO, from an ore assaying 25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO. To minimize the Clcontent, fresh water of about 0.5 m3 /t was used and the Cl- decreased to about 0.09 %

"The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. In this connection, the magnitude of cation exchange, along with the content of P2O5 and CO2, is an important property of apatite staffelite ore, which largely determines the performance of concentration processes. In the examined ASO samples, the magnitude of cation exchange measured in terms of Ca2+ is 2546-4790 g/ton. The conducted laboratory studies of apatite staffelite ores with various mineral composition showed that adding calcined soda improves the recovery of P2O5 into the flotation concentrate. Full-scale tests were conducted at the apatite staffelite ore processing plant at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation and demonstrated the high performance of the proposed agent treatment. The test results showed that in the flotation of apatite staffelite ores, the optimum calcined soda feed rates range from 3,500 to 5,000 g/ton of the flotation feed. With close flotation feed and concentrate grade parameters, the P2O5 recovery gain is 17%. The effect of adding soda is associated with the desorption of the hardness cations from the minerals, precipitation in the pulp and, accordingly, improvement in the ionic composition of the liquid phase of the flotation feed due to a reduced content of calcium ions. Based on the test results, the proposed agent treatment with an elevated feed rate of calcined soda was implemented at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation in the flotation of apatite staffelite ore. The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. These minerals have certain properties requiring a more detailed examination for a better understanding of the flotation properties of apatite staffelite ores."

The biological stage of reclamation is the third final stage in remediation the damaged mining terrains, which is carried out following the completion of the mining technical stage. The biological stage of reclamation is carried out through restoration of the vegetation layer. The biological reclamation includes all activities related to the introduction into the terrain of vegetation, microorganisms, insects, and animals, with the acceleration of the succession and creating conditions for a sustainable ecosystem close to the natural one. It comprises of all anti erosion and other activities such as the preparation of the land for growing agricultural crops, sowing grass seeds, planting seedlings, amelioration of the soil and further care for the vegetation until its final place on the land. Mineral and organic-mineral ameliorants for biological reclamation were studied. The basic mineral ameliorant is Bulgarian natural zeolites. The zeolitic-rich tuff samples provided from Golobradovo deposit was characterized by their chemical and mineralogical composition and ion exchange properties and X ray analysis. The average content of clinoptilolite was found to be more than 80%. The materials had ion exchange capacity (NH4+) varying from 100 to 110 meq/100g. Chemical modifications of natural clinoptilolites were made in order to form active phases of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. Slow-acting mineral ameliorant was developed. Organic-zeolite substrate for biological reclamation was developed. This new product is a mechanical mixture of organo-matter and modified zeolites. Agro-chemical parameters of new ameliorants were determined. The substrates including studied overburden dump soil and mineral or organo-mineral ameliorants are produced. "Have you been on a mine site? This question was posed by Emeritus Professor Alban Lynch to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Students from the Sustainable Minerals Institute - Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (SMI-JKMRC) in the Student Technical Presentations in 2015. From that question, five HDR students from SMI-JKMRC organised a placement on mine sites in Mexico. The SMI-JKMRC is well known for its tradition to provide their students with opportunities to enhance and test their skills in mineral processing plants. The Student Venture became a short internship for HDR students which had the objective of establishing collaboration with mining companies in Australia and overseas, and of providing a unique experience for the HDR students in regard to their training, professional development, networking and cultural interchange. In return for the companies’ support, the students conducted plant audits to evaluate the process performance thereby providing valuable data to the host company. The 2016 Student Venture was held at the Grupo Peñoles & Grupo Fresnillo in Mexico, in which three mine sites received five HDR students from JKMRC and one young researcher from Universidad de Guanajuato (UG). This paper describes the positive outcomes for the mining company and the students for this experience. The Venture was considered very successful, as it provided valuable training for the students as well as in depth information about the operation of the comminution and flotation circuits of the host sites for the Grupo Peñoles & Grupo Fresnillo. The experience also provided an opportunity for an exchange of knowledge between the HDR students and the site personnel from the host operations. The indication of the success of the experience for all involved was the support of the host company in future student internships."

A new cationic collector, bis(2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl) dodecylamine (N23), that can be dissolved in water easily was synthesized successfully. Its flotation performance to quartz was investigated compared with dodecyl amine in hematite reverse flotation system. It was found that N23 showed stronger collecting performance to quartz than dodecyl amine. The maximum recovery of 98% to quartz was obtained at a collector concentration of 43.3 mg/L in the pulp pH range of 6-9. This collector can be used to float quartz from hematite when starch was used as depressant. Optimal separating results with 90.06% iron recovery and 66.3% iron grade to artificially mixed sample were achieved at a collector concentration of 43.3 mg/L and a starch concentration of 23.3 mg/L at neutral pulp pH when hematite and quartz were mixed at a mass ratio of 3:2. The adsorption mechanism of the collector on quartz surface was investigated by infrared spectroscopic analysis and zetapotential measurements, which revealed that electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding adsorption occurred between the collector and quartz surface.

In this study, the QEMSCAN technology is used to acquire quantitative modal, textural, mineral association and liberation data on different products generated from with or without washing, fractionation by size and density using screens and heavy liquids/panning, which has provided significant information on the quality and beneficiability of four categories of low Grade iron ores from Jharkhand-Orissa region. The deposit of low Grade iron ore has been categorized into four categories viz. Grade-I with <45% Fe(t) a) containing shale rich type and b) BHJ rich type; Grade-II with 45-55% Fe(t) and Grade-III with >55% Fe(t) containing conventional flaky, hard, kanga, lateritic, shale and BHJ litho/ore types in varied proportions. Mineralogy is similar across all samples being hematite, martite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Banded Hematite Jasper has difficult liberation characteristics due to highly compact banded mode of silica mineral occurrence with hematite. In all categories, the grade dilution is by the presence of 1) ?Discrete gangue rich litho types? at lump size and 2) ?Within ore types?. The second type of grade dilution contains coating of gangue phases around the iron ore minerals and different degree of locking of gangue phases within iron ore minerals. Further characterization and beneficiation assessment details are discussed in this paper.

"The comminution behavior of two ferromanganese nodules samples of the equatorial northeast Pacific has been examined as a basis for the separation of two kinds of metal-rich layers. Those layers were finely grown together during nodule formation and are one reason that the exploration of deep-sea minerals calls for the development of new mineral processing concepts. Therefore fundamental analyses of the fracture behavior have been made under compressive and impact stress. Further experiments took focus on the crushing behavior in a jaw crusher and a small scale impact crusher as well as the milling behavior in a dry vibrating mill, a wet planetary ball mill, and a wet agitated ball mill. The comminuted products were characterized by PSD, particle shape, particle density, and porosity. The experiments show a low stress resistance of the ferromanganese nodules. Compared to compressive stress, impact stress turned out to be the more effective for crushing. Both samples showed no significant difference in the comminution behaviour which makes differing mechanical treatments unnecessary. In both cases particle sizes below 1 µm were achieved by wet grinding. This particle size is necessary to separate the two kinds of metal-rich layers which is part of continuative studies."

A good deposit of high sulphur coals of tertiary origin is existent in North eastern region of India. These coals are known to have indifferent characteristics in comparison to other Indian coals. The general Physico-chemical characteristics are low ash and high volatile matter, calorific value and sulphur content. Sulphur in these coals (70-95% of organic) is mostly affixed to the structure of the coal. Owing to the stringent environmental regulations, the utilization of these coals has severe limitations due to high sulphur content. In the present investigation, sulphur incorporation in to these coals has been discussed along with possible organic sulphur functionalities. The various desulphurization techniques carried out for removing sulphur from these coals have been discussed. Two step oxidative desulphurization processes has been found to be most efficient for organic sulphur removal along with mineral matter and potential toxic elements.
