The China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) conducted a topographic survey in its deep seabed claim area with the SeaBeam system in 19475. After analyzing the data, it was determined that there is a group of living things several hundreds of meters in depth that significantly affect the sound waves in the frequency range of interest. We will attempt to investigate more about such influences. Physical model testing is an important means for studying the theory, and for development of the technology for geophysical prospecting. Because the manganese nodules are distributed over the sea floor in irregular patterns, it is hoped that study of the acoustic properties of manganese nodules by means of physical model testing can improve interpretation of the data of the multi-beam system and the SeaBeam system. This will provide a more reliable basis for delimiting the mineral site and evaluating the reserves in the Pioneer area of China.

The development of marine mining in the offshore areas adjacent to most of the insular and continental European States is limited by the complex and evolving nature of its legal regime on the basis of the relevant applicable international, European and domestic rules. As the development of marine mining requires investments in capital-intensive technologies, the bankable feasibility of marine mining projects is very much dependent on the legal security of mining rights, assets and operations in offshore areas. This is quite difficult to assess due to the constant accumulation of applicable and potentially conflicting international and domestic laws in these areas, in particular the coastal zone, the territorial sea, and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The often conflicting interaction of international treaties, laws and regulations in offshore areas raises specific and major issues in terms of permitting processes, access rights, ownership rights over the mineral resources explored and mined, flag vs. coastal State jurisdiction over mining vessels and marine mining equipment, international environmental liabilities, and unitisation and multi-forum disputes. In addition, the determination of jurisdiction and the legal regime under which marine mining could take place is becoming even more complex with the development of EU Law and the recent revision of the International Law of the Sea, particularly the new extension regime of the EEZ and jurisdiction over the continental shelf.

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."

The present three-year long phase of the SOPAC/Japan Deep Sea Co-operative Mineral Resources Programme [Programme], commenced in 2000. The Programme has been funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), since 1985. Field survey activities and associated data analysis and interpretation, for the Programme, has largely been carried out by the Deep Ocean Resources Development Co., Ltd. (DORD). The Government of Japan has, since 1982, recognised DORD as one of its ? Pioneer Investigators? for manganese nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone . Although the objective of this paper is to present the results of the drilling cruise that was conducted from December 2001 to January 2002, within the North Fiji Basin, in Fiji?s EEZ, it will also seek to provide a broad overview of the results of the cruise conducted within the Cook Islands in May to June 2000, as well as present preliminary results of the cruise conducted in the Marshall Islands in June to July 2002.

Volcanic arcs, including both island arc and intra-oceanic arc systems, combined extend for ~22,000 km around the Earth, with the majority (~20,000 km) occurring in the Pacific basin. These arcs are host to over 700 volcanoes of which ~200 are submarine and as such represent great potential for hosting massive sulfide deposits formed at seafloor hydrothermal vent sites. The Kermadec arc extends for ~1,200 km northeastwards from the North Island of New Zealand and forms the southern part of the ~2,500-km-long Tonga-Kermadec intra-oceanic arc system. At least 94 volcanoes are known to exist along this system with 74, or about 80%, being submarine. At least 33 volcanoes occur along the Kermadec part of the arc with all but one (Raoul Island) being submarine. The first sulphides recovered from the entire Tonga-Kermadec arc were in 1996 from the Brothers and Rumble II West volcanoes of the southern Kermadec arc. The 1998 R/V Sonne research cruise recovered a more comprehensive suite of mineralised samples from Brothers, and also found evidence for hydrothermal venting at Monowai, Vulkanolog, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes. The March 1999 NZAPLUME cruise systematically surveyed 260 km of the southern Kermadec arc and found that 7 of 13 volcanoes were hydrothermally active, with the vent fields either located within calderas (e.g., Brothers, Healy, Rumble II West) or atop volcanic cones (e.g., Clark, Tangaroa, Rumble V, Rumble III). The May 2002 NZAPLUME II cruise surveyed a further ~580 km of the mid-segment of the Kermadec arc, from Brothers to volcano 'L', a submarine volcanic edifice 35 km NW of Macauley Island. This cruise surveyed 13 major volcanoes and 8 smaller volcanic edifices and confirmed hydrothermal venting at the Vulkanolog site, and discovered new vent fields atop a volcanic cone within Macauley caldera, immediately offshore Macauley Island, and another at the summit of volcano 'L'. A further new site was found atop a volcanic knoll immediately S of Healy caldera during time-series sampling of the vent sites found during the 1999 cruise. All the vent sites discovered along the Kermadec arc occur in water depths between 1650 and 150 m.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) was established by Congress in FY 1988 as part of the Mineral Institutes Program, administered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines under the auspices of the Department of the Interior. The primary objective of the MMTC is to encourage the development of selected mineral materials from U.S. seabeds by providing opportunities for appropriate engineering systems research, development, and technology transfer within academic, government, and industrial communities. The center will also provide the leadership and facilities required for the education and training of the nation's scientists and engineers in the field of ocean mineral development. Because of the broad spectrum of study encompassed by the field of ocean mining and mineral resources, the MMTC is organized to include separate divisions for nearshore and deep ocean research. The Continental Shelf Division is administered by The Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI) of the School of Engineering at The university of Mississippi. Present study was stemmed from the survey associated with deep-sea mining in the KODOS area between Clarion Fracture Zone and Clipperton Fracture Zone located in the North Pacific Ocean. The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of North Pacific gyre, is oligotrophic waters with low nutrients and chl-a concentrations below 1µg/l (MOMAF, 1996). This area is also characterized by divergence at 8°N and convergence at 6°N, which moved northward or southward in the range of a few kilometers with seasonal and climate changes. If the waste materials related to deep-sea mining are intruded into the surface waters continuously, unexpected effects to water column ecosystem are anticipated negatively. In order to assess the impact on the planktonic ecosystem, natural variation need to be distinguished from anthropogenically induced variation in terms of the abundance and species composition of plankton. In this study, mesoscale variation of zooplankton community was reported in relation to the physical conditions in the northeastern Pacific during 1998 and 1999. Temperature and salinity were determined using a CTD from surface to 200m depth in July 3-20, 1998 and in June 22-July 1, 1999. Zooplankton samples were collected from two different depths (0-50m, 50-200m) by vertical towing using an opening-closing net (100cm diameter and 300 µm mesh size). The samplings were carried out at every one degree between 5° and 12°N (1998), between 5° and 11°N (1999) along the meridional lines of 131°30´ W. The net was lowered to the depth of interest from a stationary research vessel and towed upward to collect zooplankton at a speed of 25~30 m per minute. Zooplankton samples were transferred to 1-l sampling bottles and immediately fixed with neutralized formalin into the final concentration of 5%. Considering the characteristics of zooplankton such as diurnal vertical migration, all samplings were done during the nighttime. The volume filtered by the net was calculated from the readings of flow meter (Hydro-Bios Model 438-115). Zooplankton were identified to the genus level and enumerated under a microscope. The abundance of zooplankton at each station was expressed as the numbers/100 m3.

Ancient ore deposits provide important clues for the understanding of the origin and distribution of modern submarine hydrothermal systems. An analysis of the formation conditions, tectonic settings, and preservation of ancient seafloor mineral deposits from the recent geological past to the late Archean sheds light on the time-space relationships and diversity of mineral deposit types likely to be found in the modern oceans. Microplate tectonics that characterized ancient ore-hosting greenstone belts were strikingly similar to those active in volcanic arc environments of the western Pacific today. In such complex settings, oblique collisions, opposing subduction zones, and rapid changes in stress regimes (e.g., from compressional to tensional and back to compressional) were common, causing juxtaposition of diverse styles of mineralization. The world-class base metal deposits of the late Archean Abitibi greenstone belt of Canada, for example, were formed within a relatively short time span of ~20 m.y., in response to successive arc rifting, back-arc basin development, and exhumation of accretionary complexes along major arc-parallel crustal-scale faults. Similar processes and environments are important settings for metallogenesis in modern submarine volcanic arcs. Active marginal basins of similar size and representing similar stages of evolution are well represented in the western Pacific today and contain a similar suite of mineral deposit types. Examples from the eastern Manus Basin and adjoining New Ireland Basin (PNG) and in the Lau-Tonga-Kermadec arc-backarc system illustrate these similarities. Certain gold-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits at the southern margin of the Abitibi greenstone belt (e.g., Bousquet and LaRonde deposits in the eastern Blake River Gp.) may be important ancient analogs of newly discovered gold-rich black smoker deposits found along the active fronts of today's submarine volcanic arcs.

Until now, more than 200 sites of sea-floor hydrothermal activities are known on the midocean ridge but few of them are documented on South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR). This on some extent restricts our directly understanding of the hydrothermal mechanism on SMAR. In 2011, During the Cruise 22 of R/V Dayangyihao, a masive sulfide field was discovered in the center part of the first-order ridge segment that bounded between Cardno Fracture Zone and Saint Helena Fracture Zone, near 15.16°S/13.35°W, which give us an opportunity to recognize the mechanism of hydrothermal systems on SMAR directly. This newly discovered hydrothermal field, which informally called SMAR 15°S, is situated in a SE-NW offset depression of an axial neovolcanic ridge, with water depth of about 2793m. In the water column around this field, strong turbidity and temperature anomalies were detected. Ten meters high venting chimneys, hydrothermal mounds as well as a large amount of hydrothermal vent shrimps were also observed and recorded by ROV and Deep tow camera on the ocean floor. The samples we collected from this field include sulfide chimney fragments, massive sulfides and basaltic rocks. In this study, we are focusing on the mineralogy and sulfur isotope geochemistry of sulfide samples for preliminarily uncovering the geological characteristics and hydrothermal processes of this hydrothermal field.

The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). With its new continental shelf beyond the exclusive economic zone, New Zealand is a country with just 4% of its territory above water. The other 96% is submerged. New Zealand's marine territory covers an area about three-quarters the size of Australia. This territory includes large portions of the Gondwana continent from which NZ separated more than 80 million years ago. This underwater land mass extends from the shores of New Zealand to a water depth of more than 5,000 m, is largely unexplored and is almost certainly the site of many large, untapped oil, gas and mineral deposits. Underwater oil and gas drilling is now a universal activity. Underwater mining is in its infancy and will become a major activity in the future, contributing greatly to the New Zealand economy. New hydrocarbon deposits will undoubtedly be discovered under the ocean floor in regions such as the Great South Basin located off Canterbury and Otago. Mineral deposits are also undoubtedly located within the oceanic crust of this underwater NZ continent. These are as yet unknown and unexplored. The oceanic crust north of the North Island is currently being extended through the subduction of the Pacific plate into the Tonga Kermadec trench and through the growth of a line of submarine volcanoes extending north to Tonga. Active submarine volcanism has led to the growth of ocean floor mineral deposits consisting of polymetallic sulphides with iron, copper, zinc and lesser gold, silver and other metals.

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Manganese nodule, the aggregate of fine grained manganese oxide minerals, is very brittle and fragile. In exploitation of manganese nodule, manganese nodules are easily broken into small pieces or powder during collecting and lifting from the sea floor. The broken manganese nodule under few millimeters and bottom sediment pumped up with manganese nodule affect to the lifting process. In this study, we tried to understand the physical properties of the powdered manganese nodule and bottom sediment, and to know the effect which may be rised to the actual mining of manganese nodules.

A very small nation with large seabed resources requires a strategy. The simplest approach is to duplicate every step taken by the United Nations (UN), in its own leasing programme. In addition, the smaller nations must sell itself and its competitive offering. It is one thing just to await applicants and/ or tenders, another to work to make the leasing seem like a very good idea. This cap be achieved through publications, correspondence, meetings (such as the Underwater Mining Institute, but especially through pro-active planning, seeking the ideal technologies in both harvesting and processing. The ideal would be some combination that could begin quickly and on a small scale. It must be within the UN environmental guidelines. To meet the "quick and small criteria," simple harvesting and physical processing methods must be given the highest priority. Once these are satisfied, then marketing studies can be completed. There is, of course, a market for every element but only careful engineering and cost analysis will determine accessibility. What is required is a stepwise approach, gaining greater and greater credibility at each step. In fact, much planning can be done for very low cost. In the Cook Islands, the first crucial step was the East-West Center publication which pulled together all facts in one volume and which found the local resource to be richer in significant ways than Clarion-Clipperton. Most seem to believe that it could be many years before full production is possible, but this has been conventional wisdom for so long that it has taken on the suspicious aura of myth. Is it real? Have all possible recent technologies such as robotics and physical processing been taken into account? Either way, it is essential that a comprehensive approach be taken so that all factors from resource to market are considered as inter-related until a single business plan emerges. When that is in hand and when its profitability and risk levels are found to be credible, adequate investment funds are available.

Many massive sulfide deposits and districts around the World contain rocks that are variously referred to as ?exhalites?, banded iron formation (IF), ?Algoma-type? IF, ferruginous chert, jasper, jasperoid, cherty tuff, tuffite, tuffaceous exhalite, chloritic IF or sulfide IF. With few exceptions, such rocks are thought to be (in part) fossil hydrothermal sediments deposited from hydrothermal fluids vented into a submarine rift environment. Such hydrothermal sediments are associated with a wide variety of ancient base-metal sulfide deposits (e.g., Cyprus-, Besshi-, Kuroko-, and Broken-Hill-type deposits), and hydrothermal sediments are commonly associated with some of the largest base metal sulfide deposits in the world. Analogs of ancient hydrothermal sediments can be found around many modern seafloor hydrothermal deposits which themselves precipitate from high-temperature (350°-400°C) hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal fluids are quenched on contact with ambient seawater, and most of the metals are immediately precipitated to form the mound and chimney deposits. However, for kinetic and solubility reasons, not all metals and other species are immediately precipitated at the vent site. Fine particles (up to several hundred microns in diameter) of sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, oxides, silica, Fe-oxyhydroxides, clays, and other phases are precipitated from the hydrothermal fluids in the water column above the deposits. These particles or "particulates" are carried upward for several hundred meters in a buoyant hydrothermal plume (which is typically several hundred meters thick) until it reaches a neutral density, and disperses laterally from the vent site. Modelling of plume dynamics has shown that the majority of particulates are deposited by gravitational settling a few hundred meters from the vent site, and Å99% of particulates are deposited within 3 kilometers. However, signals from modern plumes have been detected even hundreds of kilometers from their source. Factors which can affect the morphology of the plume (and the resultant fallout pattern) include: particulate size, shape and density, bottom topography, and the direction and velocity of bottom currents.

The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

"INTRODUCTIONSeafloor massive sulfides (SMS) along mid-ocean ridges are often seen as a possible future contribution to a secure metal supply for global human needs. A growing interest over the past few years resulted in six national exploration licenses and one application pending, covering 10,000 km2 each, that have been brought before the UN International Seabed Authority (ISA) since 2011. Each contractor has to explore these 10,000 km2 within the 15-year runtime of the contract. However, the need to define areas that are not economically interesting is more pressing, as 50% of the 100 license blocks have to be returned to ISA after only eight years - hopefully areas that do not contain large and economically interesting SMS deposits. Current geochemical prospecting technologies, however, have mainly been developed for the search for active hydrothermal systems (e.g. hydrothermal vents and associated black smokers) that can easily be traced through physical and chemical anomalies in the water column (temperature, chemical variations of elements such as Mn, Fe, redox potential, and/or the particle concentration in the water column). Such plume surveys have been a primary tool for exploration of SMS systems, but they only identify active, and therefore mostly young and small hydrothermal systems. In a recent high-resolution AUV survey performed within the EU-FP7 funded project “Blue Mining”, we covered 47 km2 along the TAG segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to test exploration methodology for fast and reliable exploration of larger areas of the seafloor for inactive seafloor massive sulfide occurrences using the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) “Abyss”."

"Bimodal lithostratigrafic assemblages are of significance in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-hosted lithology. The largest deposits are either bimodal-siliciclastic or maficsiliciclastic, and the presence of a significant siliciclastic component in the host stratigraphic succession favors large VMS deposits (e.g., Franklin et al., 2005; Barrie and Hannington, 1999). In the case of modern sub-seafloor VMS deposits in arc-related settings, the majority of deposits have been discovered in association with calderas or cauldrons (Halbach et al., 1993; Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995; Iizasa et al., 1999). These features are formed by the explosive eruption of silicic volcanoes, so that silicic host rocks and/or pumiceous volcanic clasts are generally observed around the ore deposits (e.g., Binns and Scott, 1993; Fiske et al., 2001). Caldera-like and graben-like morphological features therefore attract attention in geophysical surveys. However, silicic lithologies (dacite and rhyolite) normally contain only small amount of metallic elements (e.g., a few ppm to a few dozen ppm of Cu), whereas mafic rocks, such as basalts and basaltic andesites, contain significant amounts of metals (e.g., a few hundred ppm of Cu). Thus, the origin of metallic elements in VMS deposits associate with the silicic host rock remains unclear.The Iheya North Knoll is a volcanic complex in the middle of the Okinawa Trough. It is located in a young and actively spreading back-arc basin that extends for 1200 km behind the Ryukyu arc-trench system (Lee et al., 1980; Letouzey and Kimura, 1986). Several active hydrothermal fields have been recognized in the Iheya North Knoll. Mineralization at the Iheya North Knoll is characterized by relatively juvenile features consisting of VMS deposits with associated hydrothermal alterations to various degrees. Massive sphaleriterich sulfides at this site, recovered for the first time from beneath an active seafloor hydrothermal system, strongly resemble the black ore of the Kuroko deposits of the Miocene age in Japan (Takai et al., 2011). From February 11 to March 17, 2016, the SIP CK16-01 (Exp. 908) D/V Chikyu cruise was conducted at Iheya North Knoll and the rifting center of the Iheya Minor Ridge area, middle Okinawa Trough. The Iheya Minor Ridge area is also an active hydrothermal field, located ~30 km southeast of the Iheya North Knoll. In this area, basaltic rocks are widely distributed, and drilling has confirmed that the basaltic materials continue to ~120 m below the seafloor (Kumagai et al., in prep)."
