The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. This research investigates the generation of an effective carbonaceous material from waste ‘pure water sachets’ and their subsequent utilisation as reductants for the reduction of the Opon Mansi iron ore. Composite pellets of Opon Mansi iron ore and pulverised carbonaceous material generated from waste pure water sachets were heated from room temperature to 1200 °C in a gas fired furnace for seventy minutes. The reduced pellet was analysed chemically for its oxygen and carbon content using a LECO Oxygen/Nitrogen and LECO Carbon/Sulphur analysers, respectively. It was observed that nuggets of metallic iron were readily produced with the carbonaceous materials acting as an effective reductant and source of chemical energy. XRD analysis of waste ‘pure water sachets’ revealed that the polymer was semi-crystalline with peaks that were identical to those of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Gas emission behaviour of the iron ore-PWS pellet was studied in a horizontal tube furnace at 1200 °C using an infrared gas analyser; the results revealed an exhaust gas rich in the reducing gases CO and CH4 along with CO2.

The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

"The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. With production startup in 1970, Fox Mine is owned and operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited.The Fox orebody occurs as a large lenticular zone of semi-massive sulphides approximately 1,500 feet long and 15 to 100 feet wide running east and west. Dipping 70 degrees to the north, the orebody tends to bottom out at the 3200-foot level and reaches to within 15 feet of surface."

Abstract - Ultramafic to mafic igneous intrusions of the Las Aguilas district form part of a belt of generally mafic plutonic bodies within medium- and high-grade early Paleozoic metamorphic rocks in the southern Sierras Pampeanas region, Province of San Luis. The intrusions host the largest known nickel sulfide resource in Argentina and contain significant Cu, Co and PGE mineralization (2.2 Mt at 0.5% Ni, 0.5% Cu, 0.035% Co). Sulfides at Las Aguilas Este, one of two principal mineralized zones, are hosted by a body comprising subvertically dipping units of predominantly orthopyroxenite and melanorite cumulate, with lesser dunite, harzburgite, norite, leuconorite, and amphibolite. The units are zoned horizontally from ultramafic to mafic compositions, representing primary magmatic zonation away from an original base or side of the intrusion. Intercumulus nettextured and disseminated aggregates of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite are concentrated in the peridotitic zones and extend into melanorite. Whole rock major and trace element compositions, and olivine chemistry, indicate that the parent magma was gabbroic/basaltic with 100 (Mg/Mg+Fe) near 59, and resembles tholeiitic magmas generated in subduction-related arc, or back-arc settings. Unusually aluminous Cr-bearing spinel is compositionally similar to those in some synorogenic mafic/ultramafic plutons in magmatic arc settings. Relatively Ni-depleted olivines and low Cu/Pd ratios are indicative of magmatic sulfide segregation early in the crystallization of the magma. Early orthopyroxene saturation and virtual lack of clinopyroxene, in conjunction with sulfur isotope values up to +6.6 ‰, spinel compositions, and presence of graphite, phlogopite and magmatic hornblende, all attest to probable crustal contamination of the parent magma. Assimilation of crustal sulfur may have been crucial in the early attainment of sulfide saturation and resultant formation of magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. Fabrics, textures and mineralogy of the intrusions and country rocks and U-Pb zircon dating indicate syntectonic-synmetamorphic emplacement at 478±6 Ma during the Famatinian (Ordovician) orogeny. Minor to locally significant recrystallization and deformation of mafic-ultramafic rocks and redistribution of sulfides and PGE occurred during and following the Famatinian orogeny. The Las Aguilas intrusion is one of several tholeiitic mafic-ultramafic intrusive complexes within an Ordovician arc - back-arc system in the Sierras Pampeanas. Aeromagnetic datasets and regional mapping suggest there is further potential for intrusion-hosted Ni-Cu mineralization along this eroded magmatic arc.

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. "The Athabasca region forms part of the Churchill province of the Canadian Shield and is underlain by an Archean or Aphebian assemblage of rocks that underwent severe metamorphism and granitization during the Hudsonian orogeny (1750-1950 m.y. ago). In places, the eroded orogen is overlain by unmetamorphosed cover rocks (in-cluding the Martin and Athabasca formations) of probable Paleohelikian age. Basic dykes cut all the rocks of the region.There are innumerable vein-type pitchblende deposits and many syngenetic occurrences of uraninite in crystalline basement rocks. Evidence is presented to show that pitch-blende was emplaced during the final stages of the Hud-sonian granitization and followed the crystallization of syngenetic uraninite transitionally. In terms of P-T condi-tions, the pitchblende deposits belong essentially to Lindgren's mesothermal group.Based on the postulated uranium metallogenesis, the possibilities of finding further deposits of pitchblende and other types of uranium deposits are discussed."

A classification of important uranium deposits which utilizes both genetic and descriptive criteria is presented. The dual aspect is useful because, while the non-genetic nomenclature for the different deposit types is amenable to various interpretations, the critical characteristics of each deposit type can be analyzed to clarify various genetic points. Although the classification is intended primarily for Canadian uranium deposits, most of the important deposit types known elsewhere can be accommodated.

Abstract - The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temper- ature, the composition of the albitizing fluids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters.

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. "Over the years, ore geologists have made innumerable observations as to the relationships of certain kinds of ore deposits to particular types of rocks and to the types of primary and secondary structures that these rocks contain. On the basis of these, the places in which to look for new are deposits are more clearly defined than they would be in an exploration program based largely or solely on concepts of ore genesis. This paper discusses the affinity of certain rock types and structures for such ore deposits as: (1) tin-tungsten associated with granitoid rocks; (2) lead-zinc of simple mineralogy in carbonate rocks; (3) massive base-metal sulphides in sedimentary or volcanic rocks; (4) massive base-metal sulphides and oxides at, or near, contacts with igneous rocks; (5) gold or gold-uranium in, or adjacent to, conglomerates; (6) shale- or sandstone-hosted copper; and (7) porphyry coppers. Additional varieties could be considered, but it appears that these examples are sufficient to demonstrate the validity of the suggestion that the use of observational characteristics is far more useful in mineral exploration than that of theories of ore genesis.As by-products of the theory of plate tectonics, many concepts have been put forward to explain how ore deposits of different kinds have been formed. Most, if not all, of these theories seem to be as valid as present-day information permits. However, do these ideas add to the ability of the ore geologist to find ore deposits? I doubt it, and offer reasons as to why I think so.To produce maximum results in any exploration program, the one that makes the greatest use of information produced about the geologic environment of the area being investigated is the one that will provide the greatest return in deposits found for the sponsors of the program. Such exploration is best designated as total exploration, and it certainly is the most effective way of uncovering such new deposits as may exist in the area being studied in particular and of adding to the sum total of nonfuel minerals deposits available to the industrial world in general."

"While not taking issue with the general thesis expressed in Dr. Ridge's analysis of the role of genetic concepts versus observational data in ore exploration (Ridge, 1983), the criticism could be offered that the author tends to slight the importance of conceptual (i.e. theoretical) models in mineral exploration.As a general rule, observational data in science lacks significance and utility without a theoretical construct to organize those observations. Theory in turn dictates what observations are made-and which ones are judged important. Thus, for example, prior to the elaboration-and acceptance- of the current model for volcanogenic base metal deposits, the structural aspect s of these deposits were most closely observed and studied by explorationists. The nature of the enclosing rocks and any attendant alteration was given minimal attention, and certainly didn't figure prominently as an exploration guide.Similarly, the importance of alteration features to exploration for porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits was only perceived when a theoretical model was developed to account for these aspects. Indeed, many of these porphyry copper deposits were regarded as epigenetic vein deposits by geologists of an earlier era observing and examining on a different physical scale-and with a different theoretical bias.In constructing and evaluating such conceptual models, explorationists primarily rely on observation data and proximate associations; speculative thoughts as to ultimate provenance or crustal evolution clearly play a subordinate role, as Dr. Ridge argues. This, however, should not obscure the fact that concepts and theories do indeed exert a major influence in mineral exploration."

"The kuroko deposits, which are extremely variable in size, comprise both stratiform layers of clastic sulphide particles and cross-cutting vein and disseminated components. The ores lie on the flanks of rhyolitic lava domes which have risen from a postulated subvolcanic magma chamber that provided cupriferous hydrothermal solutions and also acted as a heat source driving ground-water convecting cells. The polymetallic sulphides precipitated initially in explosion craters, pipe fillings and feeder veins as rising hydrothermal solutions mixed with sea water. As sulphides clogged the plumbing system, minor phreatomagmatic explosions produced layers of sulphide fragments on the adjacent sea floor. One to ten repetitions of this process produced multiple fragmental sulphide beds. Each deposit formed in a relatively short space of time, because only minor tuff beds are intercalated in spite of active volcanicity in the region. In this model, the heated ground waters convecting through thick piles of acidic pyroclastic rocks leach the zinc, lead and barium later deposited as kuroko ores. As the subvolcanic pluton cools, the supply of silica and copper wanes and the minor counter-circulation cells above the pluton are replaced by main cell fluids bearing zinc, etc. This change in solution flow is abrupt rather than gradual, as the plumbing system is somewhat disrupted by the magmatophreatic explosions that create each ore layer.IntroductionKnowledge of the kuroko deposits ha s greatly expanded during the 25 years since modern recognition of their volcanogenic origin. However, one aspect of the ore s, which may be of unique importance in their genesis, has received little attention. That is the fragmental character of much o f the sulphide ore, which was briefly referred to in a previous publication (Clark, 1971) and is examined in more detail by Barton (1978). "Abstract - Potentially commercial deposits of kaolin are found in the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Chaswood Formation, the sedimentologically proximal equivalent of deltaic sediments of the offshore Scotian basin. The geological setting of the kaolin deposits has been interpreted from high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and boreholes, and mineralogical studies on one reference borehole. The kaolin is a product of early diagenesis involving meteoric water below the water table. The distribution of kaolin is controlled by the presence of intraformational unconformities that were sites of ground water recharge, and are marked by the development of oxisols above the water table. Such diagenesis was facilitated by interbedded, loosely consolidated, permeable sandstone. The highest-grade kaolin deposits are found in areas close to river belts, where overbank muds were not sufficiently drained to develop paleosols, but where later uplift created intraformational unconformities. In the sandstone, meteoric water flow altered feldspars to kaolin, thus yielding commercial silica sand deposits. It also altered ilmenite to rutile, which is concentrated as secondary placers in modern rivers that have eroded the Chaswood Formation and tills derived therefrom. Sommaire - Des dépôts de kaolin potentiellement économiques ont été notés dans la Formation de Chaswood d'’âge Crétacé Inférieur, laquelle constitue un équivalent latéral en milieu fluviatile aux sédiments deltaïques du bassin de Scotian. Le contexte géologique de ces dépôts de kaolin a été interprété a partir de profils de seismique-réflection à haute résolution, de sondages, et d’études minéralogiques sur un sondage de référence. Ce kaolin est un produit diagénétique précoce formé par de l’eau météorique sous le niveau de la nappe phréatique. La distribution du kaolin est contrôlée par la présence de zones de recharge associées à des discordances intraformationelles marquées par le développement d’oxisols au-dessus du niveau de la nappe phréatique. La présence d’interlits de grès perméables faiblement consolidés a contribué à l’efficacité de ce processus diagénétique. Les dépôts de kaolin les plus riches se trouvent en périphérie des rivières, là ou les boues de la plaine d’inondation n’étaient pas suffisamment bien drainées pour permettre le développement de paléosols, mais où des mouvements verticaux subséquents ont crée des discordances intraformationelles. La circulation d’eau météorique dans les grès a entraîné l’altération des feldspaths en kaolin, générant ainsi des dépôts économiques de sable de silice. Elle a aussi causé l’altération de l’ilménite en rutile, que l’on trouve dans des placers secondaires situés dans des rivières contemporaines qui ont érodé la Formation de Chaswood et les tills qui en sont dérivés."

"Abstract - Electrical and structural characteristics of formations favorable for sulfur occurrences in northeast Syria are described using geo-electrical prospecting methods. Simple (VES) and combined (CVES) Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings and geo-electrical profiling using a Wenner configuration were applied to the Teshreen structure. Six profiles (A, B, C, D, E, and F) at the borders of anticlines, where positive and negative structures are joined and salt formations have a tendency to disappear, were studied.Secondary structures, characterized by high apparent resistivity exceeding 3000 Ohm.m were located on each profile using a Wenner profiling configuration. These secondary structures are demonstrated to be favorable for sulfur prospecting by both drilled wells and vertical electrical soundings. Traditional interpretation of the 84 VES measurments is supported by data from 14 CVES measurments. The CVES technique is a powerful tool, due to its improved resolution of the electrical boundaries.Thicknesses and resistivities of the Lower Al-Fares, Al-Garibeh, and Al-Dibbaneh formations were determined through the interpretation of VES measurments. The same VES measurments were then interpreted using the Pichgin method, whereby all the subsurface tectonic features were determined for depth penetration corresponding to AB/2 = 1000 m. The integration of the first and second VES phases creates a clear picture of the subsurface, including tectonic, geometric, and geoelectrical information. In summary, the sulfur occurrences in the research area are controlled by tectonic paths that are well defined by geo-electrical methods. These diverse geo-electrical methods could be used successfully for sulfur prospecting in similar environments."

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

"The corrosion of support bolts in underground mines has become an increasingly prevalent issue over the past two decades. With an increase of premature failures due to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), it is evident that understanding the environmental factor influencing the cable bolt corrosion is critical for maintaining effective ground support hence the safety and productivity of underground spaces. Experimental testing of rock and cable bolts were accomplished in a variety of packings, including saturated clay, saturated coal, mine water and grout/cement to investigate their corrosion behaviours. Water samples were obtained and analysed for pH and electrical conductivity (EC) during the experiment. After a period of 76 days the bolts were retrieved and analysed visually. Primary factors were found to be the presence of geological materials and the aeration of the bolts, i.e. the vicinity to air and air flow, while secondary factors were observed to be pH levels and EC. It was also found that the coal/clay interfaces and the water/grout/cement interfaces are non-relevant to corrosion of rockbolts and cable bolts. The proposed framework can be applied to other reinforcement materials used in underground spaces for improved understanding of corrosion environment.INTRODUCTION Rock bolts and cable bolts are the major reinforcement elements used in mining industry to improve the rockmass properties for safe and productive mining. They are normally used to pin large beams or blocks of rock in underground mines to stabilise the rockmass in the roof (strata) against collapse. The rockbolts are typically low cost hot rolled rebar while cable bolts are composed of strands of wire, normally wound together around a central king wire (Hyett and Bawden, 1993; Vandermaat, 2014). The typical length of the bolts in underground mines is 2.4 m and 4–12 m for rockbolts and cable bolts, respectively (Vandermaat, 2014; Windsor and Thompson, 1997). Cable bolts are much more flexible and usually offer a much higher load capacity than rigid rockbolts. Their increased length and flexibility allows cable bolts longer than the height of a roadway to be used in underground mines."

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. Abstract-To evaluate geochemical aspects of sheared zones, 35 samples of granitoid rocks from an area of shearing >5 km2 at Derehamzeh, Iran were studied geochemically. Relatively unaltered samples within the shear-zone area average 38 ppm Cu, 1.45 ppm Mo, 4.6 ppb Au, 0.21 ppm Ag, <1 ppm Re, 46 ppm Zn, 28.5 ppm Pb, and 0.34% S. Bleached, hydrothermally-altered samples are anomalous in Cu (>896 ppm), Au(>59.5 ppb), Ag(>24.4 ppm), Re(>1.28 ppm), Zn (>164 ppm), Pb (>218 ppm), and S(>0.9%). Some samples from bleached sheared zones that are highly anomalous in Cu (5000 ppm), Mo(23 ppm), Ag(74 ppm), and Au(200 ppb) are characterized by a typical sericitic alteration assemblage consisting of sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and granular quartz. The main anomalous zone extends over about 0.4 km2 in the southern part of the area. The strong Cu- Mo-Au-Ag association in the sericitic shear zones suggests a possible relationship to porphyry copper mineralization, similar to that found in northern Chile. Further studies on drill-core samples in the southern sericitized shear zones are required to determine if more extensive porphyry-type sulfide mineralization is present.
