Currently, mining in Australia underpins the economic vitality of the nation, generating massive revenue from commodity exports and providing substantial infrastructure and employment. In addition, it is predicted that mining related services will in the future develop a global market of their own that could eventually grow to rival, in value, the export trade in mineral commodities. There is however little room for complacency. In the short- to medium-term, escalating, vigorous competition can be expected from many previously underdeveloped countries that are reforming their own mining and mineral export industries. In addition, most mining companies are facing a modem-day renaissance in terms of new expectations, changing social norms, evolving employee relations and statutory obligations. Thus, along with whatever promise the future might hold, the mining industry is currently being subjected to a growing number of largely unprecedented problems and pressures, both economic and social, that are both highly complex and demanding. In particular, it remains a matter of on-going concern that relations between mining companies and their employees still, in spite of recent reforms, continue to constrain productivity, perpetuate inefficiencies, affect quality of work life and retard progress towards mutually beneficial goals and achievements. If mining in Australia is to attain and hold on to a commanding position on the global scene, then further changes will clearly need to be made. Realisation of this appears to be growing, with most mining companies having attempted in recent years to improve workplace culture. Based on a wide ranging study, this paper presents an overview of what has been learned to-date with regard to the `people factor' when it comes to implementing and progressing positive change and reform in mining. From this, a number of practical suggestions, arising from hard won lessons and experiences in the field, are offered. Attention to the nine `key principles' given should help to ensure that many of the common problems encountered to-date with change and reform in the mining industry are in future avoided or at least minimised.

A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. Electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts contain significant quantities of zinc, found almost entirely as either zinc oxide or zinc ferrite. The dust has been classified as a hazardous waste due to the relative high lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium contents. It is important that environmentally acceptable processes be developed to treat this waste. One possible process involves reacting the zinc compounds in the dust with metallic iron, thus avoiding zinc vapour reoxidation by CO2 as occurs in carbon reduction processes. It consists of two stages where the first is the reduction of iron oxides to iron and the second the reduction of zinc oxide to zinc vapour by the iron. In this work the effects of operating variables such as temperature, CO/CO2 ratio and pressure on the recovery of zinc from an industrial EAF dust obtained from the Smorgon Steel Mill were investigated. Zinc recoveries in the second stage were found to approach 100 per cent at 1000oC after about four hours in nitrogen but within 40 minutes if a low vacuum was used.

Technological advances associated with the expanded application of paste technology in underground mine backfilling are now stimulating an interest in the disposal of process tailings as paste in the surface environment. Concurrent with the development of alternative surface tailings disposal practices is the requirement to fully understand the consolidation behaviour of tailings in paste form, and to relate this understanding to the significant body of data and operating experience from decades of study of the performance of hydraulically placed tailings. One effective method for demonstrating the benefits derived from handling and placement of tailings as paste is to review tailings slurry consolidation theory from the perspective of the changes which take place in the material as it makes its transition from a loose slurry to a dense, stable deposit resulting from managed thin-layer deposition. For a typical process tailings, an example is provided which illustrates the effect which mechanical dewatering has in accelerating the consolidation process and thereby providing a range of benefits from the perspective of surface disposal. Increased rates of filling (rise), expanded use of upstream embankment construction methods and elimination of impounded surface solutions are some quantifiable benefits which can be assembled on a site-specific basis to allow for valid comparisons with more traditional approaches to tailings disposal.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

Four manganese dioxide leaching microorganisms, an Achromobacter spp, Aspergillus niger, Elllerobacter cloacae and Elllerobacter agglomerails were purified from sucrose enriched crude mixed cultures which contained at least sixteen, non-leaching, morphologically different, colony types. Fastest leaching rates were obtained from the original enrichment's mixed cultures (1.26 g Mn++ I/d) while best yields of Mn++ m terms of sugar use came from Achromobacter and A. niger being 0.84 and 0.89 g Mn++/g sucrose respectively. The peak efficiency in manganese reduced, per carbohydrate used, coincided with the exponential growth phase for Achromobacter. The two Elllerobacter species performed better in stationary or senescent growth phases.

Generally when equipment is chosen for solving a dewatering problem, the equipment is based on one of following physical methods: gravity (sedimentation, screens), vacuum (vacuum drum and disc filters, belt filters), pressure (filter presses, hyperbaric filters) and centrifugal forces (centrifuges). The choice of method and type of equipment depends, among other things, on the requirements on the maximum water content allowed in the filter cake and on the particle size distribution and the concentration of solids in the material to be dewatered. All the above-mentioned equipment has its benefits and drawbacks. The conventional vacuum filters of drum or disc type are of a simple construction with few parts to be replaced, but these filters produce a filter cake with a fairly high moisture content, and a dryer is required for additional drying. In most cases the use of pressure makes it possible to produce filter cakes with the desired moisture content but the equipment is of complicated construction, leading to high maintenance costs . In addition to this the consumption of compressed air is high. The capillary filtration to be described in this article is a dewatering method which combines the benefits of both the conventional vacuum disc filter and the filter press. The capillary filter produces low cake moistures with a machine of very simple construction similar to that of the vacuum disc filter.

Geologists working in mountainous terrain were the first to map and interpret in three dimensions and as a result, made the first contributions to our understanding of mountain building and structural geology. However, geology during the 1900s has been dominantly a two-dimensional exercise in data gathering and interpretation. The standard output of geological surveys and university research has been the geological map and the standard methodology of the mineral explorer has been surface mapping and prospecting. The future will be concerned far more with the third dimension.

Although cyclones have been around in their current form since the early-1890s, there have been some exciting new developments, which have extended their efficiency/operation. These developments have taken place with both dense medium and classification cyclones. The more noteworthy developments are:Inlet designInlet design is the determining factor in classification cyclone capacity and efficiency. The recently developed ribbon inlet with patented pressure bulge has not only resulted in unbelievable increases in capacity, but also in efficiency. Sharpness of separation corresponding to an alpha value of greater than four has been achieved! Secondary offtakeOne of the factors leading to reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of coarse particles in the cyclone overflow. The secondary offtake has been developed specifically to scavenge these particles from the cyclone overflow with great success. Water injectorThe other major factor resulting in reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of misplaced fine particles in the cyclone underflow. The water injector, which has been around for many years in various forms, can reduce this short circuit fraction by up to 50 per cent. 3-in-1 cycloneThe 3-in-1 cyclone combines the inlet design, secondary off take and water injector into a single unit resulting in the most efficient classification cyclone available in the market. The RejectorTMIron ore has a high yield to underflow and traditional dense medium cyclones have always been spigot constrained. The Rejector TM is an exciting new development whereby the spigot capacity has been increased substantially. The application of the Rejector TM will result in fewer/smaller cyclones being required for a given duty resulting in efficiency gains and reductions in both operating and maintenance costs.

There are three major human resource management activities which, depending on how well they are done, impact on the performance of people and therefore the bottom line. These are: ò recruitment; ò training and development; and ò performance appraisal. Most sizeable organisations would say they are involved in all three, but there are many more that would admit that their human resource management practices are limited to recruitment. If we concentrate on the organisations that currently undertake all three, we have to ask, `Are they using different systems/benchmarks for each activity, or is there congruence between the activities?'. Our experience is that most organisations use different systems/benchmarks. The end result is: ò one set of criteria to recruit staff; ò another to identify their training needs; ò and yet another set of criteria to measure their staff's Performance.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. Iron and steelmaking slags have been utilised for a century. All dumps are now exhausted. Because of constraints in establishing new stock yards, all slags have to be utilised immediately. At present, this is being achieved. Only in a situation where there is an increase in pig iron and crude steel production, together with the impact of new residual materials competing from other industries can marketing problems be anticipated.

Geotechnical instrumentation has been implemented as a key step for monitoring and optimising an engineered mine design for managing seismicity at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine. Measurements of displacement, stress change, ground control element load and seismic response of the rock mass allow for back analysis and calibration of critical parameters for feedback into the engineering design loop. Instrument clusters are installed in strategic locations prior to the commencement of stoping in order to determine the nature of the response of the rock mass to stoping. A selection of instruments including instrumented cable bolts and rod extensometers, resistance wire extensometers, hollow inclusion stress cells, vibrating wire stress meters and resistance wire extensometers are used to gather data through a data logging system. The rate at which data is recorded is adjusted to provide more information during periods of anticipated rapid change such as around stope firings or during periods of high seismic activity, and less information during periods of anticipated quiescence. The twofold purpose of the instrumentation is to calibrate the numerical modelling output which forms the basis of the engineered mine design, and to provide an alert mechanism where the behaviour of the rock mass is not what was anticipated, or where the impact of that behaviour may compromise the integrity of the engineered ground control system. The paper describes the location of instrument clusters with respect to stoping, the type of instruments employed and the method of data acquisition. It provides examples of results obtained and illustrates the way in which that information is used to optimise the mine design and manage seismicity.

Underground coal mining involves the disturbance of natural strata stresses formerly in equilibrium, the production of noxious and flammable gases and dust which can be both an explosion and a health hazard. It involves also the use of heavy, large equipment operating on natural floors and in confined spaces. Such operations are required to be carried out under artificial light. Much of the easier won coal, that is the shallower coal, from this State has already been extracted and in future workings will be required to go deeper. As the depth increases strata pressures will increase, gas production is likely to be greater and the production of dust will also increase. A further problem which has not yet reached significant proportions in Australia is the potential rise in working temperature. This will be occasioned not only by the use of large items of equipment which themselves generate heat, but due also to thermal gradients as the depths increase. The need for better employee training is now being widely recognised throughout the industry. Under present highly mechanised conditions new employees should not be required to work with or near heavy mobile machinery without proper training

Consideration was given to the.applicab on of a solvent extraction circuit to be'included in the process'for the-recovery of a high grade product from.:-the Rum Jungle Creek.South uranium ore body.The economics of two alternative processes, firstly the Eluex process which uses an ion exchange process followed by solvent extraction.-of a.high grade sulphuric acid eluate, and secondly a process using direct solvent' extractioh of pregnant leach liquor, were studied. There was a small cost advantage favouring the Eluex process but when other factors were considered, the installation of a direct solvent extraction process appeared the better long term investment. A solvent extraction plant was installed at Rum Jungle in 1962.

The seminar had its origins in an Inquiry into the Box Flat Disaster and one of the conclusions from this Inquiry was that there should be a better dissemination of technical knowledge and the results of research work. As a result of this Mr. W. Roach, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in Queensland and Mr. R. Menzies, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in N.S.W. had a meeting to see how this could be done. They concluded that it would be difficult to have the sort of regular meetings that would be possible where distance was not significant, but a seminar would be a major step toward satisfying this particular conclusion of this Inquiry. As a consequence, Mr. Roach, who is on the Committee of the Southern Queensland Branch of the Institute, suggested when the Branch programme was being planned this year that a meeting of this type should be held, and the Mine Fires Seminar which was held today is the result. We have received a great deal of support in arranging the Seminar. First and foremost I wish to acknowledge support from the National Coal Board in United Kingdom. Not only have they released Dr. Willett for a period of six to seven weeks to visit Australia, conduct the Seminar and give a series of lectures in various areas through the country, they have also borne the brunt of the financial support that has been necessary to make this possible.
