Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. This paper is intended to give the reader an overview of: Rosebery Mine operations,Rosebery underground refrigeration project,technical difficulties associated with implementing an underground refrigeration system, andkey learnings to date.

Underpinning the mining process is a continuum of prediction, specifically of tonnes, grade and recovery from exploration to grade control, through short-term mine design, to mining and processing. The interdependence of one activity on the other is so strong that it can be difficult to partition the activities and determine where there are issues, if any. Reconciliation is the process that compares the predictions of the various estimates to the actual product produced at the end of the production chain. Quite often, an attempt to understand the variances from one measuring point to the other creates a ‘wicked problem’.This study outlines the benefits of incorporating the principles of ‘systems thinking’ into the mining reconciliation process, by constructing a framework within which reconciliation is effectively managed. The philosophical base for any variances between successive links in the reconciliation chain cannot be attributed purely to the statistical variance between the predicted and the actual grades achieved, but should include the interrelationships between the technical and managerial professionals involved. Systems thinking, as an interdisciplinary approach, draws its ideas and concepts from a variety of disciplines, and in so doing can exploit their different strengths.The study described in this paper offers methodologies to analyse the task, in advance of developing a technical solution. Two systems thinking methodologies, Grounded Theory (GT) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) were employed. These methodologies, are geared towards dealing with relationships and interactions between individual parts and the whole. The GT coding in the study specified that the key activity that would drive the reconciliation process is through an effective reconciliation meeting, and the competencies of a ‘reconciliation team member’ This team member should be a good communicator and enjoy challenges, be open-minded and transparent, and have a broad perspective of the mining process and relationships across the different activities.CITATION:Adofo, R, 2017. The Hamersley Group in the Pilbara, Western Australia, consist of interlayered banded iron formation (BIF) and shale host rock formations within which a large number of open pit iron ore mines have been established. The slope stability of most of the mining excavations developed within these formations is controlled by the relatively low shear strength of the shale groups and shale bands, which are the weakest rock types. Shale formations range from fresh to highly weathered and are generally highly fissile when fresh, and clayey when weathered. An accurate understanding of the shear strength of these materials across the entire weathering continuum is therefore a key importance for assessing the slope stability of these mines.Historically defect laboratory testing results for the Pilbara mines have been analysed mechanically using direct shear testing (DST) to measure a number of geotechnical characteristics of the rock bedding and defects. This paper sets out the current practice in the industry in terms of the laboratory testing and presents a possible application of hyperspectral data to empirically correlate the shear strength of shale bedding with the relative mineralogy abundance on the bedding surface. This was achieved by creating both hyperspectral and geotechnical data sets for the same samples.In the study the shale samples were separated into three distinct assemblages: iron oxide + kaolinite, iron oxide + white mica + kaolinite, white mica + kaolinite, which had 40, nine and two samples respectively. Analysing these assemblages alongside DST data showed that samples with white mica had reduced non-variable shear strength, whereas samples with iron oxide + kaolinite had an overall higher shear strength but with a greater variance. It is inferred that the reduced shear strength in the white mica samples is due to the sheet (or plate) like structure of the mineral, giving it a weak stress plane. Confidence in the trends observed can be reinforced by expanding the data set in future works. The investigation also includes a discussion on weathering grade and addresses the question as to whether mineralogy abundances influence these characteristics in Hamersley shales.CITATION:Maldonado, A, Mercer, K G and Robert, A, 2017. The distribution of tin and iron between slag and metal phases at about 1150°C was studied in pot scale experiments. The distribution coefficient k = (Sn/Fe) In metal X (Fe/Sn) in slag was found to vary from about 300 for metal corresponding to nearly pure tin, to about 100 for metal of about miscibility gap composition (17' 4 per cent Fe). Results conformed reasonably well to a straight line relationship between log k and (l-2NFe), as expected on theoretical grounds, and are consistent with thermodynamic data for the Fe-Sn phase diagram and the reaction Fe + SnO = FeO + Sn.Calculations are presented indicating the feasibility of smelting low-grade tin concentrates in a two-stage counter-current reduction process.

Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

Measurement of the net percolation from the base of a cover system into the underlying waste material is a key component of a cover system monitoring program. The units of measure (ie a percentage of precipitation or rainfall) are simple to understand for all stakeholders, which increases the importance of obtaining representative net percolation values. In general, lysimeters are used to measure net percolation across the cover material-waste material interface; however, the design of lysimeters for cover system monitoring programs in the mining industry have typically not considered fundamental aspects of lysimeter design. Lysimeter design is typically thought of as being conceptually simple, when in reality the design, installation, and operation of lysimeters is often counter-intuitive, due to the complexities of flow through unsaturated soil systems. This paper puts forward a methodology for lysimeter design while also presenting the fundamental design variables that should be considered. Lysimeter design for differing climates, cover materials, and waste materials is discussed. Finally, the performance of lysimeter designs previously installed in the field at sites in Australia, Canada, and the United States are subjected to numerical modelling to determine whether net percolation is being measured properly.

The Porgera gold mine has made significant progress with the successful installation of a JK FrothCam image analysis system. The system is used to measure and control froth velocity on the scavenger circuit which has brought significant economical and operational benefits. The froth velocity signal, determined by analysis of the camera, is transmitted to the PLC that manipulates flotation cell airflow rate and cell level controllers to maintain a target froth velocity of 130 mm per second. Following on from a three-week trial installation in June 2000, a permanent installation was commissioned on the scavenger Outokumpu (OK150) tank cells. Further work is in progress on the rougher Wemco cells. This paper describes the evaluation of FrothCam Technology and its subsequent installation.

From a study of coke samples obtained from the tuyere level of four Australian Blast Furnaces, the nature of in-furnace coke degradation has been investigated. At the periphery of the raceway is a concentration of fines and the lump coke appears dull and rounded. However coke from the deadman is angular and relatively undegraded. Cokes made from higher rank coal appear to suffer preferential attack of the reactive maceral derived component (binder). The coke from lower rank coal appears to be attacked non-preferentially by the solution-loss reaction. Initial attempts to simulate these phenomena have given results consistent with these findings. From chemical analysis of the tuyere probe samples there appears to be a relative increase in carbon and decrease in-.sulphur and phosphorous between stockline and tuyere level. An overall decrease in coke mineral matter derived material was noted and associated with this was a significant gasification of silicon. Consequent formation of silicon carbide was noted.

Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

Drilling underground can be a hazardous undertaking in many circumstances. Raiseboring and boxhole boring underground could form an integral part of the block caving production methodology and getting the right mix of technical capability, ergonomics and economical viability has been the goal of many machine manufacturers. With the introduction of the Terratec Universal Boring Machine concept, flexibility of raiseboring, downreaming and boxholing has been enhanced by the introduction of a single machine that will perform all three processes. In addition to its technical flexibility, additional safety features have been introduced that will eliminate many sources of injury by mechanising most of the operational procedures. Together with the one-man remote operation, this machine design addresses and solves many of the safety issues. This paper outlines the machine concept, details its safety features and shows the techno-economic advantages for use in the block caving environment. Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large massive orebodies because of the inherent low costs and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are mined by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Extraction of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling (Figure 1).

The contract initially involved specialty mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance and has developed to encompass maintenance planning and plant control systems.The integrated partnership has delivered excellent results in the areas of improved availability, reliability and return on investment. The operation is now amongst the industry leaders in plant availability.The integrated maintenance service has delivered: An increase in plant availability from 93%, in the first year, to 96.5% today, generating approximately $50 million additional income per year, Quality work procedures, Process and equipment improvements, Major shutdown planning involving more than 700 personnel, 6000 parts and over 2 000 discrete activities.The ongoing success of the partnership requires a high level of understanding between both companies. A commitment to maintain a long term sustainable relationship, based on a ""win - win"" culture, is the key to this success. A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

The key functions of project evaluation are to assess potential profitability and to develop an effective operational design. For mining projects, design aspects include mining methodology, ore treatment methodology and production rates. All of these characteristics impact on project economics and overall value. Resource models, which form the ultimate basis of project evaluation, typically consist of tonnes above cut-off, grade above cut-off and the spatial distribution (connectivity) of tonnes/grade above cut-off, for one or more variables. Dilution, ore loss and metallurgical recovery are all modifying factors applied to the resource model during evaluation and determination of profitability. A key issue is: how is the value determined? In addition to traditional combination of in situ tonnes/grade, the following merit serious consideration: the concentration of deleterious elements, throughput rates, mining/processing costs and û importantly û metallurgical recovery. Geometallurgy is an emerging field targeted at integrating these issues by identifying either direct measures or proxies for throughput (hardness, grindability), recovery (liberation, mineral shape/texture, etc) and concentrate quality from easily collected macro-, meso- and microscopic data. These ægeometallurgical variablesÆ drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way. For geometallurgical characterisation to have a real impact on business design, it must enable improved mine planning. When creating spatial estimates for such variables, it is preferable to find proxies that can be measured as close to the intact rock mass as possible. However, spatial estimation of proxies for geometallurgical properties and responses is complex and requires special consideration. Unlike grades, both proxies and absolute measures of geometallurgical variables are not necessarily linear or additive and therefore require very careful geostatistical consideration. In some cases, models must predict extreme values of geometallurgical attributes rather than averages. Incorrect characterisation of metallurgical recovery/throughput can (and has) led to misspecification of the scale of projects, and thus can be seriously value destructive. Aspects of geometallurgy have long been important in iron, bauxite, manganese and coal deposits and are increasingly on the radar for base and precious metal miners. However, as more metallurgically complex deposits are developed and mining of large-scale, low-grade deposits becomes more commonplace, the importance of characterising the metallurgical response in order to generate properly optimised projects will rapidly increase. It is possible that in many ætraditionalÆ (ie grades and tonnes) reserve models, the variables that drive the project are missing!

Determining the environmental consequences of green field projects is becoming an increasingly important component of new projects. Feasibility studies are regarded by potential investors as incomplete if a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has not been completed. These EIAÆs need to meet various local and international requirements in order to achieve bankability. Heavy mineral mining projects are often located in ecological sensitive coastal zones, and bring with them a suite of social impacts in the mainly developing countries within which they are usually located. This paper draws on experience gained in undertaking EIAÆs for heavy mineral mining projects in Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa, and uses these case studies to identify potential pitfalls. Important lessons include the need to initiate the EIA process as early as possible in the project, in order to develop management systems to mitigate the environmental impacts of exploration. Close and on-going consultation with affected communities is also seen to be critical to the success of the EIA. Proactive participation on the part of the environmental consultants with the project team and all interested and affected parties (IAPs) is important. An EIA commissioned later in project planning makes it difficult for the EIA to contribute in a positive manner to the project. Early engagement with environmental consultants allows the environmental assessment to develop from a report to an actual process, and to become fully integrated with project planning. The proviso is that an initial æfatal flawÆ assessment is required to identify any potential æshow stoppersÆ, in order to meet one of the important objectives of EIA, namely an assessment of whether or not the proposed project is the preferred development intervention in the study area. For more controversial proposals this may require the commissioning of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which circumvents some of the limitations of the project level EIA. Whilst confidentiality is a constraint to full disclosure, an open participatory approach to public consultation is essential to add credibility to the EIA process and to gain, at least, the acceptance of the process from the majority of IAPs. Full disclosure is encouraged by organisations such as the International Finance Corporation, who acknowledge that good public consultation costs a lot of money, but bad public consultation costs a lot more! An open approach to disclosure presents understandable difficulties for proponents, as they are required to give up some of their control over the project, and to trust the social scientists engaged in the process. However, independence in the EIA process is critical to its success. This paper will highlight these and other issues by drawing on five case studies to identify lessons learnt, and explore the above themes in more detail.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. The Archean geological sequence in the West Pilbara region (Fig 1), a deformed greenstone volcano-sedimentary succession regionally intruded by layered mafic/ultramafic lopoliths, batholithic granites, granite stocks and transected by swarms of dolerite dykes, has prompted several companies to search for a variety of base metals and and platinoids (Fig 2). In the first instance, detailed aeromagnetic surveying was completed, producing patterns of marked magnetic anomalism which proved substantially successful in the demarcation of areas warranting geological reconnaissance and detailed follow-up. Revelant to this paper were the obvious magnetic features overlying outcropping and buried mafic/ultramafic bodies which ultimately were proven to be host to Ni-Cu sulphides, pgm, Ti, V, Cr and, more recently, Ag and Au mineralisation. Routine stream sediment, soil sampling and ground geophysical techniques of the day appear, in most cases, to have been adequate in the detection of mineralisation, except in the case of Radio Hill massive sulphides where the Turam E.M. (1972) signal essentially failed to detect the blind conductor (Peters, de Angelis 1987).
