Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

The minerals industry is faced with choices beginning in the exploration phase and extending over the life cycle of the mine. Firms examine the technical feasibility of alternative actions and typically rank them based on economic performance. Increasingly firms also consider alternativesÆ contribution to sustainable development. There are many visions of what a sustainable future should look like and much debate about what should be sustained. Sustainability is a process, a series of incremental actions, and each alternative course of action has the potential to further progress toward one or more sustainability goal. However, because it is not possible to sustain everything everywhere simultaneously, trade-offs and choices inevitably have to be made.Sustainable decision making before investment (ex ante decisions) should incorporate a broad suite of quantitative and qualitative information. One approach is to utilise an integrated sustainability assessment (ISA) framework that supplements traditional technical and financial tools with other tools such as objectives hierarchies (OH) and life cycle assessments (LCA). OH is a problem framing method that captures stakeholder and decision maker interests, objectives and values. LCA addresses material and energy flows, and environmental impacts. The outputs of these tools can be combined with additional qualitative measures and analysed using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). MCDA models facilitate comparison of different alternatives on the basis of a set of criteria and indicators. Some can incorporate information on risk attitudes and preferences ( multi-attitribute value theory models) and others uncertainty about outcomes (multi-attribute utility models). Studies have been published describing and comparing tools for minerals sector decision analysis. Our paper extends this literature, discussing how a combined OH-LCA-MCDA can support ex ante sustainability assessment by incorporating preferences, risk attitudes, and monetised or non-monetised social and economic variables, in a manner that captures their inherent complexity. We also discuss how such a combined model would support trade-off analysis.

Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

The stringent marketing specifications included in coal contracts mean that coal producers must supply cleaner and more consistent coal than may have been formerly required. Geostatistics has the potential to aid in the accurate estimation of the washability characteristics of coal. A prediction method, the Kriged Service Variable Approach has been developed.A Computer Aided Drafting and Design system has proved useful in the development and application of the approach. The geostatistical approach has been tested against coal geological and borehole data and applications discussed.

A great part of the research on froth flotation of gold ores deals with ores containing gold associated mainly with sulphides, resulting in a largely accepted view that what takes place with sulphides (eg pyrite) in a flotation cell also happens to gold particles. This paper is concerned with the influence of some inorganics (CuSO4, CaO and NaCN) on gold particles flotation, using ethyl or amyl xanthates as collectors. The bench-scale tests were carried out with ground quartz and gold particles mixtures. Some findings stemmed from this study: flotation of the gold particles of size 0.16 mm was efficient adding only frother; larger gold grains were better recovered by the use of stronger collector CuSO4 did not seem to be an activator for gold; the addition of NaCN up to 200 g/t or CaO up to 2000 g/t did not depress the gold grains when amyl xanthate was used as collector although with ethyl xanthate the gold depression was verified.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. The large rotary blast hole drills for hole sizes of 250 to 375 mm in diameter have been utilized by large open pit metal and coal mines for production drilling all over the world. The design of such rotary drills is in most cases about two decades old and it has not been done much in order to apply a modern technology on rotary drilling. The most modern large rotary drill, Tamrock RI 10, consists of an advantageous rotary head with a squirrel cage AC motor controlled by a frequency converter, a beneficial mast structure with a possibility for inclined drilling, hydraulic driven, independent crawlers, and a modern ergonomic cabin to provide a comfortable working condition for the oper- ator. Several automatic features are available as options. The rig has been designed to be operated by one man only. With this modern rig the produc- tion rate can be increased and production cost kept on a low level.

Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

A fast, non-contact technique for measuring sizes of rock fragments on a conveyor belt is presented. An image processing technique called active stereopsis is used which makes use of a light stripe projected on to the surface of the fragments on the conveyor belt. A CCD TV camera is used to capture the shape of the distorted light stripe. the video image of this shape is then processed by a computer program so that the 3D profile of the surface can be obtained by triangulation. The sizes of the rock fragments are then calculated from this profile. The speed of the technique is improved by calibrating the light stripe system before measurement begins so that the profile of the fragment surface can then be measured using simple geometry. The technique is fast and highly parallel so that it is able to operate in real time.

An automated facility for non-destructive elemental analysis of mine samples has been developed and tested at Mount Isa in association with the CSIRO. The analysis is based on the prompt and delayed measurement of gamma radiation emitted by the sample during and after separate fast and thermal neutron irradiation. No sub-sampling or sample preparation is required and the analyser is operated by one person that would otherwise be splitting drill core in preparation for conventional analysis. The analyser has been calibrated to measure the following (precision in parenthesis): Ag (14 ppm), Pb (0.5 wt%), Zn (0.5 wt%), Cu (0.04 wt%), Fe (0.7 wt%), S (1.1 wt%), SiO2 (0.8 wt%), A1203 (0.07 wt%), Mn (0.05 wt%), specific gravity (0.02 g cmt). Crushed or whole drill core samples that range in size between 0.5 m and 1.8 m of equivalent BQ size drill core can be analysed at a rate of six samples per hour. If required, drill core samples can be re-packed in their original configuration for storage following analysis. Standard samples are measured every day to ensure operational stability. The analyser is controlled by a personal computer which prints the results and stores them along with the raw data on the computer hard disk. This paper reports the performance of the analyser during 1992 for routine analysis of drill core from the lead ore bodies of both Mount Isa and Hilton mines.
