With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. The economically significant seams in the Bowen Basin fall into four age groups, two in the Lower Permian and two in the Upper Permian. Coal deposition in the Galilee Basin did not commence until late in the Lower Per- mi-an and persisted into the Upper Permian. The Lower Permian and early Upper Permian coalfields of the Reids Dome Beds, the Collinsville Coal Measures and the Fair Hill-German Creek Formation are restricted to the west flank of the Bowen Basin. The uppermost Permian Rangal-Elphinstone-Baralaba Coal Measures have widespread distribution across the northern half and on both flanks of the Basin. Coal Measures in the subsidiary basins at BlairAtho/ and Ca/en were probably deposited at the same time as the Collinsville Coal Measures. The structure of the north west flank of the Bowen and the east flank of the Galilee Basin is essentially simple, but in the remainder of the basin doming and faulting complicate the structure. Also, bordering a large sec- tion of the east flank, is the Dawson Tectonic Zone, where the beds are tightly folded and faulting is intense. Cok- ing of seams is common in the northern sector of the Basin associated with igneous intrusion. With the exception of the Duaringa Basin on the east flank of the Bowen Basin, Tertiary sediments and basalt flows are more common at the western basin margin. Thick deposits of Tertiary sediments also occur in the south of the Galilee Basin. Con- sequently, coal subcrop, especially in the older, more westerly situated, coal measures is often at depths in excess of 100 m. East of this, the depth of weathering can be as shallow as 13 m and most of the coal subcrop is acces- sible to mining by open cut techniques. Coals deposited in the early Upper Permian are commonly more vitrain rich than those above and below. In the Bowen Basin, coal rank decreases from the north west to the south east, that is, from the semi-anthracites associated with the Dawson Tectonic Zone to the sub-bituminous coals of the southern Galilee Basin.

Gas explosion in underground coal workings can pose a serious threat to the safety of mine workers and the entire mine operations. Gas explosion is a very complex thermal-chain reaction in a confined underground environment. Based on combustion and explosion theory, three dimensional (3D) computational models were developed to simulate mine gas explosion flame and overpressure wave propagation in a single entry gateroad in underground coalmines. Six different explosion scenarios were modelled and compared with large scale experimental results and AutoReaGas simulations. Model validations show that the use of shear-stress transport (SST) k-? model together with eddy-dissipation model (EDM) produces good agreement with both experimental and AutoReagas simulation results. Modelling results demonstrated that the changes of temperature versus time can be divided into four stages, ie the initial condition stage, and periods of warm-up, active burning, and burnt-out. Assuming a limited volume of methane is involved in the explosion, the maximum temperature decreases as the distance increases from the explosion point, with the highest temperature reaching about 2460 K. Modelling results show that the evolution of the explosion flame shape experiences four typical stages, ie spherical flame, finger-shape flame, flame with the skirt touching the side walls (ribs) and tulip flame, which are similar to the pattern of a duct explosion. The pressure in the gateroad remains the same as the initial value before the arrival of the explosion wave and then increases rapidly to the maximum value. The design, construction and operation ofa laboratory scale rotary pot kiln are outlined. Charges ofup to 3 kg can be heated to temperatures up to 1200°C in a controlled atmosphere. Some examples of pyrometallurgical investigations carried out using the kiln are briefly described, including thermal reactivation ofcarbon using steam at 550-850°C, high temperature testing ofkiln liners for corrosion resistance to fluoride, and calcination oflimestone. Results obtained from these trials allow either direct scale-up to the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory's pilot-scale (50-100 kg/hr) rotary kiln or modifications to be made to commercial scale processes and/or equipment.

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation that New Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also (1) emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, (2) better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, (3) suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and (4) potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far- travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes.

Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

A method is presented for calculating the number of cycles of stress to failure of a drill rod from operating variables; a mathematical analysis by Cooper of the stresses present in drill steels is applied to the forged collar, i1i-in. hexagonal hollow drill steel in common use in Australia; and an estimation is made of the dry fatigue limits at various points along a drill rod.It is shown that these calculations predict failure at a 'point where failure rarely occurs, and do not predict that failure should occur where it does in practice. The reasons for this anomaly lie in the neglect of bending stresses in the stress calculations, and in failuredue to corrosion fatigue at a preferred section rather than to simpler fatigue under non-corrosive conditions.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognized that failure of metal sections by fatigue is influenced both by the number of cycles of stress imparted to the section (N) and by the magnitude of this cyclic stress (8). In this paper, both Nand Shave been calculated for rods which have failed in service, and whose operating history is known. While the calculation of the number of cycles to failure is·simple, the calculation of stress is more complex. The results of stress caIculations predict that failure should occur only hi short rods, and then preferentially at the tip end rather than the shank end.However, in actual fatigue failures of steel rock drill rods, approximately 75 per cent. of such failures are close to the shank end, and failures near the tip end are rare.The usual explanation given for this high incidence of shank-end failures is that at the point of failure there exists, in forged collar steels of the type common in Australia "hardness valley" or. As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M. The results from three quick methods for the determination of W03 in scheelite ore samples, mill products and concentrates were compared with gravimetric results and tested with standard samples to establish which was the most reliable. Summaries of the methods, two X-Ray fluorescence and one colorimetric, are given. The best method was X-Ray fluorescence, with samples cast as glass discs.

Within the Mesa J pisolitic iron ore mine, clay is distributed unevenly throughout the deposit and often forms as pods and channels less than 10 m in width. The mine resource model, based on 50 m + 50 m spaced drilling, has been unable to accurately delineate the clay for scheduling and mining purposes. Therefore, alternative methods for mapping the clay-contaminated ore were sought. Predictive clay mapping will significantly reduce production costs at Mesa J through improved selective mining practices, more accurate scheduling, reduced wear on mining equipment and minimising the need for maintenance of haul roads and ramps. High lateral resolution electromagnetic (EM) surveying using a Geonics EM31 instrument can quickly and inexpensively delineate the extent and orientation of the clays. Preliminary results indicate that a block model based on the interpretation of the EM data can accurately predict the distribution, volume and tonnage of ore and waste material. While rip-line mapping, infill drilling, ground penetrating radar and gravity can delineate clay with various degrees of success, none were as efficient as EM31.

A new procedure has been developed for the direct determination of metals loaded on activated carbon. It involves preparation of a suspension of the powdered carbon in water, followed by direct sampling of the suspension with a micropipette,and analyses by atomic absorption spectroscopy using carbon rod atomization. Advantages of the method include the simplicity of sample preparation and the ability to provide a complete metal analysis in 1 - 2 hours. This enables carbon-in-pulp operators to respond quickly to changes in plant efficiency arising from carbon fouling. The successful application of the method has been demonstrated for gold, copper, nickel and iron. Other elements to be surveyed include calcium, magnesium and silicon.

Expansion of the B.H.P. Co. Ltd. mater ials handling facilities, at their Newcastle Steelworks, began in 1964 and continued until 1970. The present complex handles the annual iron ore requirement of some three million tons for the Sinter Plant and Blast Furnaces. Iron ore is discharged from ore carriers and conveyed at rates up to 3,000 t.p.h. to either of two 180,000 ton capacity storage yards, where it is blended using boom stackers. Material is reclaimed from these yards at rates up to 1,000 t.p.h. using a slewing boom bucket-wheel reclaimer and fed to a screening station. Oversize material is scalped out and crushed in a closed circuit cone crusher. Undersize material is sized on double-deck vibratory screens which separate at 1/4in (6mm). The two fractions are blended in two of four 70,000 ton capacity blending yards using slewing boom travelling stackers. Bridge-mounted bucket-wheel reclaimers reclaim the blended piles at 1,000 t.p.h. Fine ore is conveyed to the Sinter Plant and lump ore to a second screening station, for rescreening, before passing to the Blast Furnace.

Limited's project in the Pilbara because the mining town of Newman was built almost entirely by the Company whereas residential areas built by the Company at Port Hedland were developed as an adjunct to an existing town. The Queensland Government, via the special purpose company vehicle û City North Infrastructure Pty Ltd û is currently developing BrisbaneÆs Airport Link underground toll road and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron).Airport Link is a predominantly underground toll road planned between BrisbaneÆs northern suburbs, the airport and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) frame. The Northern Busway forms part of BrisbaneÆs expanding busway network, sections of which will be jointly delivered with Airport Link. Airport Link will connect the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron and Sandgate Road and the East-West Arterial in the cityÆs north-east. The Northern Busway is a two-lane, two-way bus-only roadway proposed to connect the existing Inner Northern Busway at Herston with Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Bracken Ridge. Airport Link and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned in the first phase of the State GovernmentÆs South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program. The paper will provide an overview of the projects, including a discussion on the technical and environmental aspects as well as the procurement of the Airport Link as a public private partnership.

The beneficiation of fine coal has been the major problem facing the coal preparation engineer in recent years. The influence of clay slime, particle size and reagent type are but a few of the many factors that affect the recovery of fine coal. Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. Unfortunately, in most cases this technology has not carried through to the operating plants.

Several major routes connecting Northern and Southern Europe or Asia run through Austria. These highways have to surmount the alpine range which traverses Austria from west to east. In order to ensure safe driving conditions even in winter, tunnels, at times quite long ones, are necessary. Austria now has tunnels totalling 160 km in length. These tunnels are either already in use or just about completed. The Plabutsch tunnel near Graz will be one of the longest tunnels in the world: approximately 10 kilometers in length. It will be put into operation in the summer of 1987. Before construction could begin, soil and rock conditions had to be investigated by means of a test tunnel. Afterwards, excavation was begun to the full 100 m' cross section. The new Austrian tunnelling method with conventional blasting was used for the major part of the tunnel. It was necessary to have such a large tunnel cross section because a fully transverse ventilation system is installed for environmental reasons. In order to avoid air pollution from the tunnel, exhaust fumes are not allowed to escape from the tunnel portals but from two shafts, each with a diameter of 8.5 m. In this way, exhaust fumes must rise 90 meters or 240 meters before they reach the open air and will thus not affect the city. The ventilation system influences the size of the excavation, and especially the size of the ventilation caverns and the air shafts. All these factors directly influence construction and maintenance costs, and an economical optimisation leads to the appropriate dimensions for the excavation.

By the 1990's Australia could be the largest coal exporter in the world and one of the few industrialised countries potentially able to supply the shortfall in its domestic oil requirements by utilizing its oil shale and coal resources to manufacture synthetic oil. The major challenge to both industry and government in implementing the new role for Australia will be to ensure that their actions and policies enable the timely mobilization of resources needed to meet the potential demand for energy, both domestic and overseas. Australia's potential for coal production and exports and for the production of oil from shale and coal are discussed and the potential constraints to development Examined.
