British Coal has always been a big mining company and its management has been beset with many of the problems one would associate with such an undertaking. These include its accountability to Government, its market vulnerability to competing fuels and to imported coal and its relationship with its workforce but also with its own history and size. As a fragmented private industry up to and including the Second World War, it was starved of capital and its management developed an historic relationship with its workforce which was often counter productive to success. Once nationalised, it contributed greatly to post-war industrial regeneration, investment was forthcoming to reconstruct existing mines, sink new ones and to mechanise production operations. British manufacturing companies contributed to this mechanisation drive, the very success of which drove up production and productivity and against a declining market, contributed to the reduction in size of the industry. Production machinery design evolved in the 1960s with close collaboration between manufacturers and users such that an inevitable proliferation of machinery types and specifications developed to meet local needs. Longwall mining internationally outside Western Europe only became significant in the 1970s. It became apparent that international operators demanded higher levels of plant performance from British manufacturers than British Coal did. This was the birth of the "heavy duty" plant concept. As international performances outstripped our own then British Coal moved in to invest in itself, in this heavy duty. This re-investment commenced in the mid 1970s but only gained real momentum in the 1980s when it became a virtual re-equipping exercise for the whole industry.

The industrial practice of separating finely' around valuable minerals from associ- ated gangue materials by froth flotation is well known. Despite the obvious importance of this industrial process, the predictive tools for plant engineering evaluation of flotation process variable changes are still in a developmental stage. Consider, for example, the situation where an operating engineer is faced with evaluating a change in an existing chemical reagent scheme, possibly based on batch laboratory data. When all is said and done, the engineer must still perform detailed physical testing of the proposed reagent change on the actual equipment in plant use to be confident even of the direc- tion of change of plant results, let alone the economic viability of the change. The theory behind chemical reagent behaviour in froth flotation has been studied extensively, e.g., (Aplan {1980}, Fuerstenau {1976}, Fuerstenau {1962}, and Somasundaran {1980}), and, certainly, important progress has been made. Unfortunately, the nature of the flotation process, with its complicated heterogeneous surface chemisty activity operating on highly variable and difficut to characterize ore surfaces, coupled with com- plex mass and momentum transfer phenomena, :;l riously compromises the plant scale predictive capability of theoretically based models.

The paper describes a mineral potential mapping of gold and other base metals in Mahneshan area, Iran, using geographical information system (GIS), in which, the method of weights of evidence is used to combine spatial data obtained from different sources to make prediction for mineral potential. This is a quantitative tool for mineral resource mapping that can be used to delineate and predict favorable areas for further exploration by using the characteristics of known and similar mineral deposits. In accord with the descriptive model for gold and other base metal deposits, the spatial distribution of 20 known mineral occurrences was used. In addition, digital evidential maps were used in this study. The maps include maps of lithological units, faults and first derivative of total aeromagnetic data, remotely-sensing data of alteration and also geochemical evidential maps produced on the basis of the results of chemical analyses of samples taken from the stream sediments in the area, and analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, As, Ag, Au, Ba and Hg elements. The binary maps were produced and then combined with the model of weights of evidence using 20 known mineral occurrences to obtain a final map of the favourable areas for further exploration of gold and other base metals in the study area. The final map is a predictive GIS model of the mineral deposits in the area. An interesting matter about the final predictive GIS model is that the faults are mainly located in favorable areas which possesses the most probability of mineralisation. Therefore, the faults in these areas have priority for further exploration of gold and others base metals.

In this paper the reactions which may lead to particle hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity as a function of grinding environment-are reviewed. The results of pulp chemical investigations related to a Cu-Pb-Zn ore on a pilot plant scale and laboratory tests with a Pb-Zn ore to evaluate the effect of some inhibitors on grinding/flotation are presented. The flotation recoveries of the ores treated by conventional and autogenous grinding methods show only a marginal difference and the results favour autogenous grinding. Iron originating from several sources manifests in the form of insoluble hydroxy complexes in the pulps. Such metal hydroxy complexes are hydrophilic and coat the mineral surfaces indiscriminately. On the other hand, selectivity is a problem for pulps ground by autogenous milling. Some corrosion inhibitors used in the laboratory grinding/flotation tests on a Pb-Zn ore showed maximum reduction in the wear of the grinding media ranging from 25 - 36 per cent, depending on the type and concentration of the inhibitor.

Recently an inorganic salt, sodium polytungstate (SPT), has become available that allows the preparation of non-toxic solutions of relative densities up to 3.1. It is relatively expensive and at the higher relative densities achievable, highly viscous. Alternative inorganic compounds may in the future be identified that overcome these limitations. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd (AMIRA) has initiated a project to examine possible alternatives. However, it has been found that by the addition of finely divided ferrosilicon to solutions of SPT, relative densities of up to 4.0 can be achieved. A laboratory technique for density fractionation of sized mineral samples utilising this finding has been developed. This is currently being extended to study the potential applications of such liquids and suspensions in dynamic systems for mineral, coal and recycled waste separations.

Due to geographical location, AustraliaÆs economy and trading are closely related to Asia. With ChinaÆs increasing demand on resources and energy and Japan and KoreaÆs steady imports in these fields, AustraliaÆs mining industry is experiencing a so called æboomÆ period. Traditionally, engineers or skilled workers from South Africa, Britian or other parts of Europe moved to Australia for its mining industry. Now, more students from Asia are starting to choose mining engineering (similar choices include mining geology, metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and mining surveying) and expect to work in these fields. How does AustraliaÆs mining industry face such a situation? What kinds of challenges and opportunities do the mining industry and universities face? How do mining companies utilise these human resources? This paper concludes with an analysis of all these questions at an industrial level and some personal deduction as to the preferred course for international students.

More than 1000 Ian of seismic reflection data correlated to ten exploration wells along with geological, gravity and magnetic data are used to construct the subsurface structure, in particular the crystalline basement, along a corridor approximately 100 Ian wide that traverses central Iraq in SE-NW direction for a distance of about 500 km from Baghdad in the central part of Iraq to Dohuk near the Turkish border. This transect is one of few such transects that represents the Iraqi contribution to the Global Geoscience Transects (GGT) project. The transect crosses two out of three major tectonic elements of Iraq: the unfolded zone and the folded zone.

A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

The paper describes a method of making quantitative mineralogical measurements on many of the major lead/zinc orebodies in Australia. The work was done using QEM*SEM. It was found that a relationship betwen phase-specific surface area and particle size, when plotted in a suitable way, gave a straight line with slope related to the grain size of the mineral in question. The method provides an excellent way of differen- tiating between minerals in existing orebodies and, consequently, an easy way to establish a comparison between a new prospect or orezone and current operations.

During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. The Reefton Goldfield on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand was a significant gold producing area between 1860 and 1951. During this period it produced approximately 2.1 million ounces (67 tonnes) of gold. The largest single producer on the goldfield and the deepest mine in New Zealand, was the Blackwater Mine at Waiuta which produced 21 tonnes of gold. The Prolubition Shaft reached a depth of 878 metres (317 metres below sea level). The mine closed suddenly in 1951 with about 66 000 tonnes of are remaining in the stapes. Since closure there has been no attempt to determine the ore potential of the mine at depth. This paper summarises the geology, history and resource potential of the mine and sets out two options for evaluating the remaining resource. The options are either deep drilling from surface or recovery of the Prohibition Shaft and underground development and drilling. A schedule for each option is presented and discussed.

An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. Major occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) are in crustally-contaminated, huge, layered igneous complexes (Bushveld and Stillwater) and gabbroic intrusions (Norilsk); relatively minor occurrences include arc-related æzoned Alaskan ultramaficsÆ. In terms of arc-related provenances, the recognition of alluvial PGM in river and beach deposits of southern South Island (Mitchell, 1995), in situ in the Longwoods (Cowden et al, 1990), and the ultramafic-mafic layered Greenhills Complex at Bluff (Spandler et al, 2000) raise the possibility that some economically-significant PGM deposits may exist in New Zealand. The Longwoods and Greenhills are in the Brook Street Terrane which is a remnant of a primitive intra-oceanic arc system of Late Permian-Early Triassic age. The Terrane comprises volcanogenic sequences containing plagioclase- and clinopyroxenephyric basalts, high-MgO ankaramite and dolerite dikes, trondhjemite plutons, and basaltic to andesitic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks. The cumulate complexes contain early-formed olivine- and clinopyroxene-rich ultramafic cumulates overlain by anorthite and hornblende-bearing gabbros. Primary (isoferroplatinum) and secondary (sperrylite) platinum group minerals are preserved in chrome-rich spinel pods in basal dunite of the Greenhills Complex. Saturation during early fractionation of primitive high-MgO magmas rather than magma mixing seems likely for the primary PGM. Together with correlative terranes in Queensland and New Caledonia, the Brooks Street Terrane is an exposed cross-section of an extensive Permo-Triassic island-arc system. Most parental magmas were primitive island-arc tholeiites, but other primary magma-types include high-MgO ankaramites and trondhjemites û the latter formed by partial melting of lower crustal clinopyroxene-rich cumulates and gabbros, respectively. The parental ankaramites fractionated to form mafic-ultramafic cumulates and primitive to evolved melts of high-Al basalt to andesite compositions (Takitimus). The Brook Street Terrane is an analogue for modern intra-oceanic islandarc systems and allows detailed study of subvolcanic arc processes.
