Block or panel caving technology is far removed from that of the top slicing and block caving of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The rapid mechanisation and expansion of these methods in the late twentieth century was as much a result of the change of the technology of the unit operations of development, ground support, drilling and blasting and transport as it was of the advances in geotechnical understanding and practice. The small footprint gravity and scraper block caving mines with boundary weakening, rail transport and shaft hoisting of the early to mid-twentieth century have been replaced by massive high lift panel caves using preconditioning of the ore, large load-haul-dump units, adjacent crushers and conveyors to surface. The technology changes in the unit operations are described and the drivers for these changes examined.CITATION:Weston, A J, 2016. An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

The largest oil sand deposit in the world is located in Alberta, Canada, with a total proven reserve of 2.5 trillion barrels of oil. The water based extraction process is currently being used in commercial operations to recover bitumen by flotation from oil sand ores. A recognised challenge in bitumen extraction is the reduced bitumen recovery when processing ores containing high fines content or æweatheredÆ oil sand ores, collectively known as poor processing ores. Inspired by demonstrated success of using kerosene as collectors in coal flotation, an innovative idea of using oily bubbles (air bubbles coated with a thin layer of oil or solvent) was tested to improve bitumen flotation recovery from poor processing ores. In this study, dynamic contact angle of air bubbles or oily bubbles on bitumen and induction time of bitumen-oily bubble attachment in water were measured to justify the use of oily bubbles in bitumen recovery from poor processing ores. The type of oil or solvents, including kerosene, toluene and naphtha, used in generating oily bubbles showed a marginal effect on the contact angle values, similar to the values measured with air bubbles. However, the spreading of an air bubble was found to be much slower than that of oily bubbles on a bitumen surface. The induction time for oily bubble-bitumen attachment was found to be much shorter than that for corresponding air bubble-bitumen attachment in the process water from poor processing ores. The reduced induction time for kerosene-coated air bubble-bitumen attachment correlates well with the improved bitumen recovery from poor processing ores using kerosene-coated oily bubble flotation technology.

The passage of a vast array of new State and Federal environmental legislation over the last couple of years has required many mine operators to sharpen their focus on environmental requirements. Established requirements, such as environmental impact assessment, minimising disturbance and rehabilitation must now be complemented by mine environmental management plans. These may not only require regular monitoring of mine operations and detailed forward planning to prevent or reduce environmental harm caused during mine operation, but annual updating. It is likely that in future these plans will be required to incorporate general principles such as pollution prevention, sustainable development, waste minimisation and conservation of biodiversity and ecological integrity.

The domestic and commercial use of underground space dates back to Neanderthal man living in caves. There are many examples worldwide of the imaginative use of underground excavations, either left by mining or purpose-built. World living trends indicate that an increasing percentage of the population is living in and around major cities. Environmental, social and economic pressures associated with urban expansion can be partially catered for by a well-planned and integrated underground space regime. This paper addresses the types of underground development that are complementary to the economic and environmental pressures associated with urban expansion and high density cities. The paper explores the implications of mining and exploration technology and civil engineering, as well as the ancillary professional disciplines (legal, architecture and planning, sociology and education).

The backfilling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 Mtpa underground Long Hole Open Stoping (LHOS) operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), surface rockfill and underground rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via boreholes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process either at optical or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the placement of both rock and CAF fill in the stopes. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimisation of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilisation of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill monitoring device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the backfilling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by æseeingÆ through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is also discussed.

In the humid, subtropical climatic conditions, typical of Papua New Guinean high-lands, auriferous carbonate-quartz lodes and stockwork veins of the Upper Ridges mine at Wau, have weathered in situ forming manganese dioxide-quartz wad flatmakes and veins. Vein assemblages and sulphidized host breccia have been chemically weathered to 20-25m depth, and microscopic grains of electrum (550-600 fine) formerly enclosed in carbonate, sulphide and quartz have dissolved in the oxidizing alkaline fluid. Coarse secondary electrum, crystalline and dendritic, is concentrated by manganese dioxide and at the base of chemical weathering. Fineness is unchanged, eliminating the possibility of gold and silver migration as a chloride complex. Experimental tests on the stability of thiosulphate, and its ability to dissolve gold and silver from colloid, crystal and synthetic alloy confirm that secondary electrum at Upper Ridges is most compatible with precipitation from (Au,Ag)(S203)23-; a complex readily destabilized in the presence of MnO., or with decreasing Eh.

About 60 persons are admitted to the graduate course every year after passing the entrance examinations. The entire course of studies is free of charge and the universities provide accommodation for the students who need it. The five years of studies are divided into 10 semesters. One semester lasts 15 weeks. Automatics can be studied at three separate faculties. At the University of Mining and Metallurgy, it is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Electronics as well as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgical Machines (metrology can also be studied there); at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, the Faculty of Mining offers the course. The educational plans and programmes comprise 3 groups of subjects: common for a given course of studies (foreign languages, political science and the basic technical knowledge) common for the speciality and subjects of diploma courses. The whole time of studies covers about 4400 hours excluding 3 periods of professional training and the physical training. The classes, laboratory classes, seminars and design classes are obligatory and the attendance is strictly checked. Students may extend their knowledge by participating and working in the Science Clubs. The students' work is checked not only during the classes but also by the examinations held at'the end of respective semesters. Those who fail the exams can repeat them only if very important reasons are presented. At the very end of the studies there is a diploma examination together with a discussion on the diploma thesis, written by the student. The successful result entitles the student to recieve the title of "magister inzynier",M.Sc. of his speciality. The graduates, after working for 2 years, can attend another course of studies lasting 2 semesters and called "Postgraduate Course", or start "Doctoral Studies" finished by the defence of a doctor's thesis. In'these cases the expenses are usually covered by the graduates' employers.

Coal development in New South Wales can involve a complex series of government approvals, a requirement that results from the coincidence of many development sites with environmentally sensitive areas. The concept of network analysis is applied to the pre- development regulatory procedures leading up to the grant of a coal lease. The network facilitates a quantitative and qualitative analysis of activity schedules relating to pre- requisite statutory approvals. The sequencing of activities (with clear start and finish nodes, identification of sensitivities and time estimates for completion of each phase of the network) provides government and industry with an effective planning tool.

A philosophy is presented that new graduates in mining and metallurgy should be equipped to use computers during their under- graduate courses, should be aware of the capabilities and costs of a wide range of computing equipment, and should receive sufficient stimulus to become involved in applying computers for the benefit of the mineral industry. A program is presented in which computer applications and "hands on" involvement with computers are integrated into the progressive stages of the undergraduate courses in Mining and Metallurgy. In this respect, the role of the computer is to assist the student by performing time consuming tasks, to demonstrate the industrial applications of computing, to extend the scope and complexity of the tutorial, assignment and project work which can be undertaken by the student, and to provide the essential first stepping stones toward continued useful involvement with computers during the graduate's working life.

The foam behaviour of low molecular weight polypropylene glycols (PPG) was investigated as a function of concentration and molecular weight (190 - 2000 g mol-1). For each polypropylene glycol, foam stability increases with concentration and passes through a maximum, beyond which foamability is suppressed as the solubility limit of the glycol is exceeded and droplets of glycol form. Light scattering data as well as static and dynamic surface tension results provide the key information leading to these interpretations. A maximum in foamability was observed for the PPG molecules with increasing molecular weight (caused by a change in molecular conformation at the interface). This suppresses the Marangoni effect and leads to a decrease in foam stability.

In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.

Industrial relations on Australian and New Zealand resource projects can be volatile. Therefore investors have become increasingly aware over the years that sound industrial relations during construction is vital to the overall success of their project. There has been a wide range of actual industrial relations performance, project by project, and the degree. of success often directly correlates with the degree and thoroughness of pre-project planning. However, although many projects have been crippled by delays and cost overruns because of labour disputes, good results are achievable. Total commitment to the project by all parties involved is essential and it is up to the employers to seek out this commitment and not just trust mother luck. Industrial relations must be taken very seriously as the price of failure can render a resource project unviable.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste landform. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model.
