Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand.The reform of New Zealands minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New Zealands resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

Ilmenite production in Western Australia commenced in 1956. There are now five producers, all in the Bunbury-Capel district, and current total production capacity is about 450,000 t.p.a.The deposits occur near the surface and average between 10 and 50 per cent heavy mineral. About 70-85 per cent of the heavy mineral is ilmenite. Other heavy minerals present include leucoxene, zircon, rutile, monazite, and garnet. The ilmenite contains 52-60 per cent Ti02. and is very low in chromium (0·03-0·04 per cent CrS03)Mining is done by sluicing, drag line excavation, or dredging. Primary concentration of the heavy minerals is achieved by spirals, revolving cones, or Reichert cones. After drying and screening, ilmenite is separated from the heavy mineral concentrate by various types of magnetic separator.Separate leucoxene, zircon, rutile, and monazite concentrates are also produced. Each plant uses a different technique and the processes used include chemical attritioning, screen plate electrostatic separation, high tension rolls, air tables, and dry launders.INTRODUCTIONThe treatment of beach sands in the Bunbury/Capel area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in Western Australia. Nevertheless, since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced (Table 1).The increasing world recognition of Western Australia as a major producer of ilmenite (Table 2) is due primarily to the low chromic bxide content of the mineral (0' 03-0' 04 per cent Cr203), combined with a medium to high titanium dioxide content (54-60 per cent Ti02), supported by large reserves, a stable government, and close access to good shipping facilities. Ilmenite is. produced from these deposits at low cost which enables the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from major markets.

Comminution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies which even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity. In essence, this challenge is two-fold. One, as much as three to four per cent of all electric power generated world-wide is consumed in crushing and grinding primarily because the utilisation of energy is woefully poor. Studies have shown that the efficiency of mechanical size reduction processes is of the order of 1.5 to 12 per cent only (Schoenert 1986). Two, with the grinding technologies available to us, we have, at best, inadequate and, at worst, almost negligible control over the shape of the comminuted particles, size dispersion of the ground mass, and the sharpness of mineral liberation. Low energy efficiency and lack of control in the sense mentioned above have far-reaching implications for resource conservation, performance of down stream unit operations, and damage to the environment. Our problem is in fact central to the mineral-energy resources triangle shown in Figure 1 which depicts the close interrelationships among mineral resources which are becoming poorer in content and more complex in mineralogy each day, energy resources which are depleting rapidly without any viable alternate on the horizon, and environmental concerns which can no longer be ignored. It is evident that any improvement in the efficiency of the comminution process impacts directly on the control of environmental damage, conservation of energy and the economics of the operation. These concerns have special relevance for the processing of non-ferrous ores.

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

Willemite mineralization was discovered in 1966 in the North Flinders Ranges of South Australia, in the course of a stream sediment sampling programme. Further work outlined a total of nine separate willemite occurrences in the Copley/Beltana area, and ten small deposits in the Toondana area south of Parachilna. Mineable reserves of 1 000 000 tonnes grading 36.8% zinc were outlined in three deposits in the Copley/Beltana area and campaign mining of the Main Orebody commenced early in 1974. The main group of deposits all occurred within red, dolomitized Cambrian Ajax Limestone, and most are associated with significant thrust faulting. The area of the Main Orebody group of deposits has been intensely fractured, and the surrounding dolomites are often brecciated and contain up to 5% zinc. Lead and arsenic mineralization are minor components of the main group of deposits. Masses of Middle Proterozoic Willouran Formation crop out adjacent to or close to most of the deposits in the Copley/Beltana area. The Willouran is frequently highly sheared, brecciated, and often contains large inclusions of younger formations. It is believed that most of the Willouran outcrops represent piercement structures.

Seam correlation in the central Rapahoe Sector (Greymouth Coalfield) can be enhanced by detailed lithostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy. Rewanui Coal Measures are overlain comformably by lacustrine, deltaic and fluvial strata, and this upper contact can be located using lithological and geophysical log character. The Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary (KTB) occurs near the top of Rewanui Coal Measures and has been identified palynologically in 16 drillholes. The Rapahoe Sector can be subdivided into two palynostratigraphic domains which adjoin along a basement normal fault which was downthrown to the north during coal measure deposition. The KTB provides an isochronous surface which is independent of the lithostratigraphic datum. Using the KTB as a datum, the æUpperÆ, æMainÆ and æSubmainÆ seams can be reliably correlated throughout the southern and central Rapahoe Sector. Similarly, the æSubmainÆ seam can be correlated with æcÆ seam of the Strongman Mine area, though other Strongman seams are absent from the central and southern Rapahoe Sector.

Industry has a very special request to make. Environmental issues must not be allowed to become a factor of competition so that nations or individual industries can gain economic advantages for themselves by encroaching unduly upon the environment. An international harmonisation of the demands imposed on specific industries and industrial plants where discharges are concerned is therefore essential. The same applies to any to any action contemplated against noxious products. An important step towards that goal is no doubt represented by the United Nations Conference on the Environment scheduled for 1972. Conclusions: Australia must recognise its responsibilities in an inter- national movement to control pollution. It must react on a national scale to a problem which is threatening our whole national environment. To gather, collate and coordinate the information needed to ensure policies which strike a balance between conservation and development, we must look towards the Commonwealth to coordinate the activities of its own instrumentalities and those State and independent bodies working in the area. Financial aid must be provided to stimulate research and later to ensure that environmental protection policies are observed. These policies will be founded on social economic theories which will be both practical and sound, The United Nations conference on the Environment is scheduled for 1972 and in this is the opportunity for international cooperation. Cooperation in the field of controlling legislation and the collection of much needed data. There is an imperative need to assemble facts for world use - an international know-how bank which acquires the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification. Arising out of this Conference, is it too much to expect that there could be established an international authority for environmental control, whose activities are governed on a multi-national basis? Such an organisation would have as its primary concern the collection and classification of official regulations, as well as the sheer collation of data to permit economic evaluation of the costs of conservation of the environment. There is an international scope with different factors involved, including industrial technology: in other words, the concrete measures taken against industrial pollutants ought to be more or less identical for similar industries irrespectives of the countries in which they operate. The assembling of an international common foundation of knowledge is imperative so as to acquire the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification available for all who are interested.

The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

The Drake-Rivertree area lies in the far north east of the New England district of New South Wales. Drake is some 500 miles north of Sydney by road and 36 miles west of Lismore. Rivertree is situated 24 miles north of Drake.The Drake deposits were first worked in 1878 for gold which occurred in a very fine state in ferruginous gossan but at depth copper ore became more significant. The lodes at Rivertree, discovered in 1887, were worked for silver but mixed sulphides became more prominent in deeper levels.Several mines operated at each centre and each locality smelted its own ore.The mines at both centres were operated sporadically for many years though production was not particularly substantial.A number of the larger mining companies have shown a recent interest in this mining field with special emphasis on the Drake locality.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe two mining centres are situated to the north and south respectively of a belt of Permian marine sediments and volcanics similar to, and probably representing an easterly extension of, the rocks of the Emmaville district further west.E. C. Andrews (1907) recognized two stratigraphic units within what he called the Drake Series. The Lower Division consists of rhyolite flows, tuft's, breccias and agglomerates, followed by trachytic and andesitic tuft's containing cladochonns, thanmopora willcinsoni and other Permian forms.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. In the future, Illawarra Coal, the primary metallurgical coal producer in the southern coal fields of New South Wales, will face many unique challenges not found in other coal or minerals production areas. To manage these challenges and determine the best strategy for the business, Illawarra Coal has adopted a systematic strategic planning process, which starts from the broadest possible options analysis and culminates in a ægo-forwardÆ operating case that individual mine sites use as the basis for short-term planning. This paper will discuss two major topics. Firstly an overview of the Illawarra Coal and BHP Billiton strategic planning processes. This will demonstrate the range of variables and inputs that are required for the planning process, and the system which is followed to evaluate different alternatives for the extraction of the resource. Secondly, having discussed the primary external and internal factors that must be accounted for in the planning process, and the main issues affecting the viability and likelihood of each alternative, the paper will discuss the particular challenges that Illawarra Coal will face in the coming decades. These challenges include: market and price uncertainty; managing impact on surface features, infrastructure and environment; community interaction; transport and logistics constraints; unknown mining environments; lack of geological knowledge; limited surface access for new mining domains; changing attitudes to longwall mining in the Illawarra; ageing workforce; and cost and overhead management. The paper intends to discuss how these issues impact the business currently and how they are incorporated into Life of Asset plans and overall corporate strategy for Illawarra Coal.

On Monday, October 25th, 1971 at approximately 12.15 a.m. the night shift proceeding underground discovered smoke at No.1 and No-3 cut throughs on the eastern side of the belt heading and in close proximity to the upcast shaft. Attempts to control the fire continued throughout the morning; as the position underground altered various procedures were adopted in an effort to contain and control the fire. Despite these efforts at approx. 12.40 p.m. a sudden change occurred which made it necessary to withdraw all workmen from underground, the vicinity of the Tunnel entrances and upcast shaft. Sealing of the mine at the entrances was the only remaining alternative. Several boreholes were put down to enable sampling of the atmosphere and air temperatures to be taken. This was essential as a guide to determining when conditions were suitable to allow exploration of the area using mine rescue self contained breathing apparatus.

Across the globe, it is a common scenario that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are being decommissioned; however, their subsequent impact on the local environment and landscape can often be overlooked during the mine planning process. In addition, the requirement of a cover system for a facilities closure may not be a priority until the latter stages of the mine/mill operation when potential cover materials may have been utilised elsewhere or, worse, buried. Developing a conceptual design and closure plan for a TSF early in a mining venture is fundamental to its success once operations have ceased. If a cover system is a planned component for rehabilitation of a TSF, it is vital that its design is appropriate to the facility and any local site constraints, such as climate and cover system material availability. It is also strongly recommended that various cover system options are physically trialled at the site by using performance-monitoring instrumentation. Through this process, an informed decision can be made regarding the most appropriate cover system design to meet any regulatory and stakeholder closure objectives and criteria specific to the site in question; however, in order for the cover system’s performance to be determined through on-site trials, it is essential that an appropriate instrumentation design is utilised. Often, little attention is paid to the data that is being obtained, and its importance may only become apparent after several years of monitoring at an expense to the venture. This should not be the case. Many sites have used an appropriate initial planning stage to understand what is required for the successful closure of a TSF, how it can be achieved and how monitoring data can be utilised to prove, or otherwise, that a cover system design will be a success.CITATION:Barritt, R and Scott, P, 2015. The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

"Various approaches are used in the industry for establishing procedures (sample mass estimation and method of subsampling) for sampling and analysis of gold ores. The key factors that determine the accuracy of the results that can be expected for a given set of procedures are widely misunderstood.Recent developments in sampling theory show that the estimation of the accuracy that can be expected for a given gold ore as a function of sample mass is actually a simple matter. For a given sample mass, the accuracy that will be achieved depends only on the grade of the ore and the range of masses of the grains of the gold in the ore. This, of course, demands that a reasonable estimate of the distribution or spread of gold grain masses in the ore be known. But this is something that should be known if the gold is to be efficiently recovered in the processing plant.This paper provides a simple explanation of the real facts about sampling of gold, either in the field or in the plant, and provides results for a number of cases of combinations of fine and coarse gold in an ore. As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick GoldÆs autoclaves /carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility at Goldstrike, a study was made to evaluate the use of surfactants for reducing the loss of gold during cyanide leaching of preg-robbing gold ores. Consistent improvement of gold recovery was observed with surfactants at various testing conditions. There is a considerable difference in the particle size distribution (PSD) of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the test moisture state and the chemistry of the water used for testing. The coarse coal reject tested were collected from Jeebropilly Mine, located in the Ipswich Coalfields of south-eastern Queensland. Differences between the results of dry and wet sieving analysis indicate a significant breakdown of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject on wetting-up. Wet sieving caused a breakdown of the gravel-sized fraction to silt and clay size without significant breakdown to sand size. There is also a considerable variation in the results of hydrometer analyses of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the chemistry of the water used, particularly at the fine end of the particle size range. The waters used included tap water, coal processing water and deionised water. In addition, the method of dispersion applied prior to hydrometer analysis can have a significant effect on the PSD of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject, with boiling and sonic vibration causing the most breakdown of the clay particles. Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

Current methods of mucking out small development tunnels are a major limitation to improved efficiency and high rates of advance. This is particularly true in the deep metalliferous mines of South Africa, where the harsh environment, remoteness of operations and the hard abrasive rock conditions mitigate against the use of the tunnel borer type of equipment. The Loader Distributor Train was designed to overcome the special problems of hard rock tunnelling. It combines advanced innovative technology with proven simple methods of operation and maintenance. The system aims at taking advantage of new, efficient and cost effective power sources in South African mines based on replacing compressed air with electro hydraulics and the new concept of hydropower. It also introduces electronics and computer technology, for both automatic control and fault finding, into the production environment. The system is designed to permit sophisticated equipment to be operated and maintained by a semi skilled labour force. Although still undergoing trials it is believed that the Loader Distributor Train will prove highly effective, and that the new concepts offer considerable potential in areas other than flat tunnels, in particular the cleaning of inclined shafts.
