At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

Recently, the quality of sinter feed ore used in sintering process has deteriorated. In particular, Fe has decreased and gangue component has increased in the sinter feed ore. Increase of gangue is not only the factor to influence sinter qualities, but also the factor to increase coke ratio in the blast furnace operation as the increase of slag ratio. Therefore, to cope with the deterioration of iron ore qualities, studies on alternative iron ore resources and development of its utilisation technology have been required.In that kind of new iron ore resources, authors focus on high-grade magnetite fine. High-grade magnetite fine decreases sinter productivity by the decrease of permeability of sintering bed. Therefore a new study for using large amount of magnetite fine is required. In the past, there are some studies about the effect of mixing ratio and size of magnetite fine on productivity and quality, but there are few studies about magnetite fine segregation in charging.In this research, the melting behaviour and interfacial reaction calcium-ferrite, which has important role as bonding agent among iron ores, melts into hematite substrate and magnetite substrate was studied. As the results, it was defined that upper segregation of high-grade magnetite fine is suitable for productivity of sintered ore. The Diavik Diamond Mine is a world-class operation located in an extreme environment 220 km south of the Arctic Circle in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics û such as limited winter access via an ice road, mine infrastructure being located on an island, with mining taking place behind dykes holding back a lake, temperatures at the mine that get down to -45¦C in winter, and the presence of bears, wolves, foxes and wolverines! One thing that Diavik does have in common with other mines around the world is the need for reconciliation. In late 2005 Diavik implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate the process of reconciling geological models, mine plans, production data and plant results. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation. It outlines the migration of Diavik away from a comprehensive and effective spreadsheet-based reconciliation process to a commercial grade, automated and web-based information management system. This paper documents the reasons for moving away from the spreadsheet system, the key parameters used for reconciliation, and the benefits gained by closing the loop between reconciliation and ongoing process improvement.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

Techniques and results achieved during the excavation of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (HURL) are summarised and discussed in the context of the various restraints present in a typical urban construction project. Mechanical methods (as distinct from those utilising blasting)accounted for the bulk of the excavation. Ground support was critical in this particular geological excavation setting, but is not discussed in detail except insofar as it constitutes a restraint to excavation progress.

Mechanised sub-level stoping is one of the most widely accepted stoping practices followed in base metal mines in India. As a general practice, blast-scheduling of rings in these stopes is done either heuristically or randomly which leads to a high fluctuation in ore grade when drawn and delivered to the mill. In this paper, dynamic programming has been investigated as an optimisation technique for optimal blast-scheduling of rings. A microcomputer based dynamic programming algorithm has been developed in C language which runs under the UNIX environment. A case study based on Indian mine data is presented to demonstrate the application of the dynamic programming concept and use of the developed software. It is concluded that dynamic programming can be used as a production planning tool in Indian mines practicing sub-level stoping and following heuristic/random approaches for blast-scheduling of rings.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

Various circuits were tried at Mount Isa Mines during the period 1959 to 19G3 with the objective of improving the differential flotation of galena and sphalerite. Many benefits and disadvantages of the various circuits were revealed. An analysis' of ore characteristics and their effect on flotation was made -and resullted in the design of a proposed circuit which is currently in the process of installation.INTRODUCTIONSince 1936 when lead-zinc sulphide flotation commenced at Mount Isa, at least three types of ore have been encountered.Each ore has presented problems to flotation metallurgists.The three types of ore are,1. partially oxidized upper level sulphide ore,2. Black Star ore from the lower levels with its carbonaceous fraction, and3. Black Rock ore which is similar to 2, but more free milling.In retrospect a number of the metallurgical successes of the past were short lived. Often flowsheets or 0perating practices were designed to solve a single metallurgical problem associated with the current ore being treated. As the ore changed the problem would vanish and the method originally taken to counter the problem could become unnecessary or deleterious to the treatment of the new ore. The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

Citigold Corporation operates the Warrior gold mine at Charters Towers, northern Queensland, mining narrow quartz veins (0.1 to 2 m wide) in granodiorite by long hole open stoping on levels 15 m apart. Access is by decline and cross-cuts with on-ore development drives. The mineralisation comprises Palaeozoic mesothermal quartz veins containing gold, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, hosted by the Ordovician age Towers Hill Granite. The gold grain size is variable from 1 to 500 ¦m with 1 m face samples up to 800 ppm Au, and average run-of-mine grades of 10 to 14 ppm. Despite the spectacular gold tenor, little visible gold is present. Gold grades are highly variable presenting challenges in ore reserve estimation. Tonnages are discounted by 70 per cent to allow for the low payabilities (30 to 50 per cent) of the veins. Estimation techniques allow high confidence in overall global grade estimates but poor reliability on a local scale (25 m). Kriging ranges as low as 5 - 8 m means that obtaining a Proved Ore Reserve by diamond drilling is not economically feasible, and broad-scale mine planning decisions are made at the Inferred Mineral Resource stage and mine design work at the Probable Ore Reserve stage. Proved Ore Reserves can only be estimated after underground development has proceeded through the mineralised body with levels at 15 m vertical spacing sampled at 2 - 3 m intervals along the level. However, reconciliations between actual gold produced and earlier resource estimates produce workable results. A further three mines are scheduled to be developed underneath the city of Charters Towers.

During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) is Australia's largest company with widespread commercial interests ranging from steel productin to minerals, oil and gas recovery. While these interests are worldwide, the Company operates or is partner in more than 30 Australian mining ventures. BHP Engineering (BHPE) is the in-house consultant to BHP but is also the largest consultancy in Australia available to general industry. Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Limited (AGC) is a large, independent consultancy offering specialist services in all aspects of water resources, waste management and environmental engineering, both in Australia and overseas. AGC is particularly well regarded within the mining industry and has a considerable record of providing solutions for mine water related issues. By drawing on the extensive combined experience of AGC and BHP Engineering, this paper will summarize some of the unique ways in which water interacts with and impacts on mining operations in Australia, particularly in matters such as: Slope Stability Drainage and Dewatering Production Cost (Transport, Drilling, Blasting, etc) Water Supply Water Management Tailings and Waste Management Environmental Issues. The paper will also illustrate the cost benefit of providing major engineering works for reduction in total mining cost. It will be shown that, through advance planning and close interaction between outside experts (ie consultants) and on- site personnel, very significant operational cost savings can be made while at the same time achieving a safe and responsible mining environment.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. An assessment has been made of six reported methods for the determination of the swelling of iron ore pellets on reduction. The methods are discussed on the basis of apparatus requirements, reduction conditions, sample requirements, measurement of swelling and reproducibility. It is concluded that the CNRM, LKAB, and Lurgi methods are the most satisfactory which presently exist for determination of the swelling of industrially produced, iron ore pellets.

Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

This paper discusses the implementation and potential limitations of the method for estimating sampling and analytical errors of multiple source mine output blended into a shipping product, described by Everett and Ziegelaar (2010). The practice of quality measurement varies between iron ore miners. The common objective is to monitor effective resource utilisation and control of product quality to customers. A flow diagram is given presenting the various options used by iron ore mine operators and the merits of the different options are discussed.
