Safety bulletins and stickers issued for the paste backfill plant at Cannington read as follows: æCannington Paste Fill Plant, First of ItÆs Kind in AustraliaÆ. We could even dare to state that the Cannington plant is different than any other paste backfill plant in the world because of the overall design, plant equipment and underground delivery. However, one thing to be certain of is, the paste backfill plant works as designed and a pump is not required to deliver paste underground given the general plant arrangement at Cannington. The past two years have been a process of evolution to design and construct the plant and make it work. This paper will describe the paste process using full mill tails along with placement of cemented paste underground. Discussions will include rationale of fixed plant selection along with various control requirements. BHP World Minerals recently commissioned its paste backfill plant in December 1997. Cannington is placing full mill tails underground via two surface boreholes that deliver either to primary or secondary stopes.

Ruapehu is an extremely active andesitic composite volcano, built in at least four cone- building episodes over the last 250 ka. The volcano was constructed by a variety of extrusive and subplinian, strombolian, phreatomagmatic and dome-related explosive eruptions from summit, flank, and satellite vents. The volcano may be subdivided into the cone itself, of volume 110 km3, and a surround- ing epiclastic ring plain of similar size. Four facies associations can be recognised at Ruapehu,-two each on the cone and on the ring plain. Neither cone nor ring plain provides a complete record of the history of the volcano. The cone is dominated by the products of extrusive eruption, as primary pyroclastic deposits are seldom preserved, being rapidly removed by erosion from the steep water- saturated and/or snow-covered flanks of the cone. The ring plain consists of the products of mostly explosive activity forming an alter- nation of primary pyroclastic fall deposits and material transported from the cone by lahars, floods and debris avalanches and then rapidly reworked in sediment-choked hyperconcentrated Streams.

Some results of recent population surveys are presented and discussed in terms of future housing needs and potential employment problems encountered by school leavers.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

In order to make good decisions, as to whether large diameter raise bored shafts can be constructed in blocky rock at a particular location, mine planners, management, geotechnical engineers and contractors must understand and consider a range of geotechnical issues. Firstly, mine management must ensure that adequate time and resources are available to find appropriate shaft sites. Deep weathering, adverse structures, groundwater, etc might mean that the most desirable location, with respect to other mine development, might not be suitable. Special site investigation drilling, etc may be necessary. Even then, alternative construction options might be necessary, other than just reaming through to the surface. A site investigation borehole should then be drilled to investigate specific and general ground conditions along the raise alignment. Often, only small sections of weak blocky rock dictate raise stability. While the empirical McCracken and Stacey method is typically used in Australia to assess raise stability and assess geotechnical risk, until recently it had no published performance data.An Australian database of raise performance now exists and is presented below, courtesy of an industry survey by the Eastern Australian Ground Control Group. Raise diameter and ground conditions (in terms of a lower bound Qr value) is presented for 50 cases versus raise performance.

The hydrocyclone parameter d5Oc is estimated by the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Results indicate that ANN performs equally well as compared to statically derived analytical formulae. Results also show that ANN will also be convenient in the on-line control of hydrocyclones.

ERM Consultants Pty Ltd was established in 1980 for the purpose of introducing a disciplined coal technology and power station planning service, to support Australia's efforts in establishing a major export steaming coal industry. At that time, major coal exploration programs were mounted on more than 50 potential export coal deposits with proven open-cut reserves to export 200 Mt/a of coal. The fact that Australia achieved an export trade of only 30 Mt/a, equivalent to the energy requirements for a population of around 5 million people, illustrates the very small achievement to date. The main reasons for this small export steaming coal growth have been: 1. Failure to convince potential overseas coal buyers of the benefits of coal-fired power generation, and the ability of proper power station design to overcome environmental problems, and achieve reliable operation and long life when burning Australian coals. 2. Failure to promote Australian power engineers to advise on the use of Australian coals, resulting in Northern Hemisphere power station experience dominating in market countries. 3. Failure of governments to draw on privately practising Australian power engineers and coal technologists in technical workshops, presentations and assistance to overseas countries, to ensure that personnel whose business it was to serve the follow-on needs of countries were readily available. The result of these failures has been that: 1. Only a fraction of prospective overseas coal-fired power projects have proceeded. 2. Australia has had no influence in the design of overseas power stations to ensure that potential customers would be confident that Australian coals could be reliably burnt in their boilers.

The three papers reviewed here consider different problems of mine management. Comparison of two of the papers demonstrates a marked contrast between the old and the new, in terms of mine management and impacts. The third paper discusses post-mining rehabilitation. The paper "The impact of a derelict base metal mine on the aquatic environment", by Brooks and Mclveen contrasts strongly with the paper "Narbarlek Uranium Mine design, construction, operation monitoring and decommissioning of the water management system" by McLoughlin, Grounds and Weatherhead. Brooks and Mclveen detail the contamination emanating today from the Conrad Mine in New South Wales which was mainly operated for 15 years at the turn of the century and later for 7 years in the 1950's. The mine was apparently developed over the years on an intermittent, ad hoc basis with no regard to contamination management, resulting Ti significant contamination persisting through time. This type of mining development is the antithesis to the type of planned mining and management operation which was carried out in Arnhem Land at Narbalek, and which apparently resulted in no uncontrolled contaminant release and successful decommissioning of the mine.

"Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. The early development patterns of both Australia and New Zealand were substantially in parallel and both were heavily indebted to gold mining for, providing the stimulus to growth. However, since the mining boom, of 1895 - 1899, the mining sector in New Zealand has progressively declined, while in Australia it has assumed an increasing importance in the economy. The continued dominance of minerals in Australian trade, and the fact that eight out of the top ten companies in Australia are directly involved in mineral exploration and production, has strongly influenced government and public attitude's to the minerals sector. Although the legal framework of mining and exploration Acts and Regulations are similar it is in, the method of administration, particularly in regard to exploration and prospecting licences, that the gulf across, the Tasman is apparent. Despite the relative ease of application and granting of licences in Australia, in the more settled south eastern part of the continent we are finding more and more land is being zoned unavailable for exploration. In the remote areas, the Aboriginals now control nearly ten per cent of the land area of Australia, virtually with drawing that portion from exploration. The concept of 'Australianisation' has softened a hardening attitude against foreign investment in mining on the part of the bureaucracy. This anti-mining attitude is fortunately, not shared by the public, and we can but hope that the will of the Australian people can filter through to our masters in Canberra, and ease the rapid increase in the number of regulatory bodies which does so much to inhibit the normal conduct of business. The delays caused by interminable hearings and committee investigations all cost money. This cost can only rebound back on the end consumer, who after all is a voter.

Successful evaluation and exploitation of resources and reserves relies on the collection of high quality sample data. The quality of the sample data must be maintained through the application of a robust quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) program, including documentation of sampling procedures, training of sampling personnel and the regular monitoring of control samples. However, the application of QAQC programs in the minerals industry is often poor and the purpose misunderstood. It is all too common to have good quality control data collected, but no analysis work carried out until after drilling is completed. In a lengthy drill program, this can lead to problems not being discovered and corrected as they happen. Moreover, rectifying problems afterwards will be costly in terms of time and money, if not impossible. The consequences of poor quality sample data are many and include such effects as over- or underestimation of block grades, misclassification of ore and waste, and lower confidence in the resource/reserve models. The purpose of this paper is to highlight, using case studies, the importance of good QAQC practices to monitor the quality of sampling and laboratory sample preparation and analysis.

Conventional treatment of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals by flotation involves the use of sodium sulphide for sulphidisation. Sodium sulphide is generally applied in a "slug" dosing fashion with manual regulation. However, it is recognised that "over addition" or "under addition" of sulphidising reagent can result in poor flotation recoveries. Thus, control of sodium sulphide additions is an important aspect of a sulphidisation circuit, both commercially and metallurgically. In any plant where the flotation feed is "constant" it is possible to operate at a constant rate of addition of sodium sulphide. In actual plant practice, however, it is difficult to maintain a truly constant feed for any reasonable duration because this implies not only a constant feed-rate, but also constant mineral composition and particle size range. These factors can vary significantly and ideally require corresponding variations in the additions of sodium sulphide to maintain optimum recoveries. To cope with variations in the feed, it is essential to have automatic rather than manual regulation of the sulphide reagent addition. The CPS process achieves this control by utilising a sulphide ion-selective electrode as a control instrument in sulphidisation. The CPS process which uses a selective electrode, enables the sulphide ion concentration in the flotation pulp to be monitored and controlled continuously throughout the stage of sulphidisation.

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. The Larox Corporation develops, designs and manufactures industrial filters and is a leading technology company in its field. Larox is a full service solution provider in filtration for separating solids from liquids. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The trade name CeramecG is used to differentiate the Larox filter from the generic term.

In the future to excavate sufficient coal for power generation, two dredgers would be required to dig overburden or interseam 70010 of the time and three dredgers 40010 of the time. One overburden system was not adequate for this requirement, making coal production reliability vulnerable. TS5 spreader is the new machine element of this system. The selection of the best type of machine configuration to suit the application was then subject to an internal SECV VE Study, a registration of interest and a tender for two machine alternatives. This paper outlines the reasons why SECV planned the Secondary Overburden System and how the Krupp machine met these requirements. It also identifies the main design features of the machine and its constructability which will allow the machine to be operational by the end of May, 1990.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

Cores of pre-Tertiary basement from ten oil exploration wells are related petrologically to the "axial", "marginal" and "shelf" facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline.A NW. Nelson-type basement is inferred beneath peninsular Taranaki and the western continental shelf. The terms Taranaki Basin and Wanganui Basin are re-defined and the terms North Wanganui Basin, South Wanganui Basin, Pipiriki High, Taranaki Fault, and Turakina Fault are proposed. Major faults are interpreted as of mainly transcurrent type and appear to form the western part of a splay at the northern end of the Alpine Fault. Evidence for a major Cook Strait Fault is reviewed.

One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. With the new specialised blasting design the formation of boulders was eliminated.CITATION:Vieira, L and Koppe, J C, 2015. Mining is claimed to be unique among industries owing to its dependence on exploration for its existence, the need to operate in remote, inhospitable areas, the vast capital sums required for development, the need to pay royalties regardless of profitabil- ity, the wide swings in prices for many of its products, the finite life of each-mineral deposit, its susceptibility to criticism by environmentalists, its dependence on export markets and sensitivity to' cost and exchange rate fluctuations, the uncertainties inherent in most mining legislation, pressures to grant mineral rights to aboriginal communities and the burden of having to finance its own infrastructure. The special problems of the industry have been recognised in the income tax laws which, generally speaking, allow for the deduction of all capital expenditure before tax is payable. Notable exceptions to this rule are the absence of special deductions for mineral processing facilities and the absence of any deductions for a large part of the expenditure on ports and port towns.
