Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Australians have always been great travellers but, traditionally Australian companies have been very conservative in contrast to more daring individual Australians. During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Copper sulfate is traditionally used to activate various types of sulfide minerals. The list of users includes Falconbridge Sudbury operations, where copper sulfate solution is added to the pyrrhotite/pentlandite middlings at the scavenging stage. Results from some batch tests reported in the literature suggested that copper activation is helpful for the improvement of pentlandite recovery, especially in the difficult to float fine particle range. Any improvement in pentlandite recovery is important since it is the main nickel bearing sulfide mineral. The impact of copper sulfate for this function has been investigated. Since the focus of current investigation was the flotation behaviour of minerals at the scavenger stage, rougher flotation was kept as constant as possible at two different weight recoveries, namely 13.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent that is relevant to industrial practice. Samples taken during batch testing were extracted using DETA and flotation products from selected tests were analysed to determine the recovery by size behaviour in relation to the use of copper sulfate. Results provide significant evidence that the addition of copper sulfate to these middlings does not yield greater nickel recovery, either on an overall or specific particle size basis. It is concluded that copper sulfate is wasted in the process and that self activation behaviour of the ore at a slightly reduced pH is sufficiently significant to maintain the scavenger recovery of pyrrhotite and pentlandite at desirable levels. Results obtained from limited circuit trials have shown supporting evidence for this conclusion.

A linear motor properly wound can serve as a mechanism for separating paramagnetic sulphide minerals, like pyrrhotite, from other sulphides and associated gangue minerals. The effectiveness of separation depends on the energising current of the separator, the frequency of the ac cycle, and the particle size of the minerals. The speed of travel of the minerals over the surface of the separator is also a function of particle size, and appears to be constant. The movement of pyrrhotite, magnetite and iron filings of comparable size fraction (150 ¦m +74 ¦m) on the linear motor surface has been observed using a cine camera. An attempt, has been made to give a theoretical basis for the movement of the particles by calculating the minimum electrical energy required to move them. Further, the rate of decay of magnetic moment of the particles has been estimated for magnetite and it has been found that sufficient residual magnetism existed in the particles after they had been exposed to the first half of an ac cycle for them to have like polarity with the second half of the cycle. The particles are therefore repelled from the motor surface every second half of the cycle. This repulsion due to remanent magnetism is the probable cause of particle movement over the linear motor surface.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. "This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

IN the course of his employment the Broken Hill Co. the writer has had occasion to use and instruct others in the use of the Shamrock rescue apparatus. This paper deals with the various types of apparatus tested. The common object of the various types of breathing apparatus is to enable the wearer to remain and work for varying periods of time in an atmosphere which is either deficient in oxygen or is poisonous that is, contains carbon monoxide or irritating and irrespirable vapours, such as the smoke from underground fires, sulphur dioxide or ammonia fumes. For any apparatus to be efficient as required in the above paragraph it must fulfil the following conditions;1. Air-tight as regards the passage of the air from the outside to the inside. In atmosphere containing carbon dioxide a slight leak would not render the apparatus useless; but where irritating vapours, such as the smoke from burning oregon and sulphides, are met with, even the slightest leak must be avoided.2. The oxygen supply must be ample, and so supplied that it is not checked by expiration.3. Expiration and inspiration must not be retarded.

Historically BHP Billiton Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA) have generated resource models from widely spaced data points (drill holes). The accuracy of these models has been influenced by the degree of local structural disturbance of the coal seams and by the choice of interpolators used in the modelling process. In some circumstances unacceptable vertical errors of up to 10 m have been observed whilst mining. New terrestrial photogrammetry or laser imaging technology now allow the 150 or so kilometres of exposed highwalls in BMA to be rapidly, accurately and safely mapped and the three-dimensional images economically incorporated into resource models, reconciliation grade control models, drill and blast designs and for pit stability analysis.

In this paper a project to develop a joint optimisation/simulation model for production planning in a mine-mill complex is presented. The system involves a mill receiving ore from a number of different locations, each with a unique mineral composition. The mill consists of several crushing and grinding circuits that function in series and parallel. Scheduling the flow of materials through the mill is complex due to constraints on throughput imposed by the millÆs design, the length of time material can be stockpiled on the surface, varying input mineral composition, and throughput targets for a range of output products.An optimisation model is used to create a set of campaigns (ore feed rates) over a given planning horizon under the assumption of deterministic mill throughput. A simulation model is used to evaluate the production plan under assumptions of stochastic machine failure and operational losses created by the need to cycle between input feeds. Campaign scheduling has two important implications for the simulation. First, during any campaign, multiple ore types may need to flow through the mill. However, the mill must be controlled to ensure that only one type of ore can be in a crusher, a grinder or a storage bin at any point in time. Second, as the mill switches from one campaign to another, the set of ores being processed may differ. Thus, the flow of ore through the equipment during a campaign changeover must be controlled to ensure that one or more of the ores from the current campaign can be completely eliminated before the ores from the new campaign are introduced.The simulation architecture employed for this project is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) combined with MS-Excel as a user interface. A fixed step discrete event orientation is assumed as the simulation framework. A set of model constructs was built for the project with a specific Canadian milling operation in mind, but was designed to be representative of a broad class of milling operations. The constructs are implemented as class objects within the VBA structure, each with a number of properties and methods. The collection of VBA objects forms a composable modelling toolkit. These objects can be linked together by users, via MS-Excel, to represent a broad range of milling operations.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

Many of the worldÆs larger iron ore deposits are hosted by rock sequences of Archaean to early Proterozoic age. Most models for the genesis of these deposits are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the nature of the atmosphere at the time of their formation, and more specifically by the presence or absence of oxygen in the early atmosphere. Since the early-1950s, the geological literature suggests that the Archaean atmosphere was æreducingÆ, and that it may not have contained significant amounts of free oxygen until ca 2 Ga. There are many different definitions of the term æreducingÆ, but the criterion adopted here is whether crustal iron was limited to Fe2+, or whether Fe3+ was also widespread, ie was there scope for redox changes in the state of iron? Significantly, major Australian banded iron formations span this period of inferred atmosphere transition, eg Mt Goldsworthy, Mt Tom Price, Middleback Ranges. Geological evidence for a reducing Archaean atmosphere is both ambiguous and controversial (see review by Phillips, Law and Myers, 2001). Many earlier ideas (eg no Archaean redbeds; all very large iron ore deposits being post-Archaean) have been disproved by dating, whereas other evidence (eg homogeneous detrital gold grains, inferred palaeosols) has not withstood geological scrutiny. The interpretation of some data sets (eg inferred detrital uraninite and pyrite in some Archaean meta-sedimentary rocks) is still controversial. In fact, some lines of evidence now suggest that oxygen was present in the atmosphere well before 2.5 Ga (eg sulfates in the Pilbara craton, carbon distribution in clastic sedimentary rocks). An oxidising Archaean atmosphere has important implications for the development of iron formations. First, the atmosphere is an obvious potential source of oxygen to stabilise ferric iron minerals. Second, reduced fluids in equilibrium with ferrous iron are commonly inferred to transport iron in solution to the depositional site. The redox state of the atmosphere thus provides critical constraints on the solution chemistry of surface waters, effective transport paths for iron and particularly on viable precipitation mechanisms. Iron formations developed from fluids in equilibrium with the atmosphere also have the potential to provide important constraints on the evolution of EarthÆs early atmosphere. If an oxygenated atmosphere is a necessary condition for the development of iron formations, then the Archaean atmosphere must have been oxidising since at least 3.5 Ga. If the redox state of the atmosphere is not a necessary condition, then the time distribution of iron formations cannot be used to provide constraints on atmospheric evolution. Given these uncertainties, models for the genesis of iron ore deposits of Archaean or early Proterozoic age should not rely on a reducing atmosphere in the absence of independent evidence and the alternative of an oxidising atmosphere should also be considered.

Invariably when a new plant is cammissioned operations personnel on takeover look at ways and means of reducing certain restrictions and improving process conditions. These improvements are generally of a mechanical/engineering nature with minor metallurgical alterations to fine tune and maximise recovery. Most operations are continually reviewing and updating existing equipment and equipment spares to gain the maximum performance hereby reducing operating costs. Design of current carbon-in-pulp/carbon- in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants has evolved to such a high degree that many of the medium sized plants can have a "blue printed" design from one to the next if the same engineering designer is used.

Detailed geochemical analysis of cored and non-cored drill hole data was used to characterise and model the Cenozoic detrital valleys of several deposits within the southern Pilbara region, Western Australia. The purpose of this modelling was to better characterise and understand the relationships between the various geotechnical units comprising mixtures of rock and soil for the purposes of slope stability and depressurisation studies.This paper presents data from several valleys where geological, geomorphological and climatic processes have resulted in the deposition of heterogeneous detrital rock and soil sequences. Seven primary detrital units are recognised as occurring within all the valleys studied, suggesting that the geological processes involved in the erosion and deposition of the units were widespread. Geochemical assessment of cored and non-cored data suggests correlatable geochemical signatures can be recognised for each of the units; however, local variability in the groundwater history of individual valleys is demonstrated by late-stage carbonate precipitation recognised both in the core and through the geochemical signatures, which has resulted in alteration of the parent rock/soil material. This paper discusses how the carbonate alteration may lead to improvements in rock/soil mass strength of a clay unit by comparing laboratory strength test samples of the same parent material with varying degrees of precipitate alteration to those with no discernible carbonate alteration. Following from this, correlations with geochemical assay results have been derived, whereby zones of more favourable strength conditions may be modelled through assessing areas of analogous geochemistry.The paper demonstrates how geochemical assessment can lead to improved geotechnical and hydrological modelling for a detrital valley system without the need for significant coring and laboratory testing. Although this is a symposium on "The Occurrence, Preparation and Use of Australian Black Coal", I do not think that, in these days, any of the main energy resources can be considered only in terms of country of origin or only by itself in isolation from other energy resources. Accordingly, I propose to comment on solid fuels generally in the world energy scene, and make some brief references to Australian solid fuels, and to some other matters in the latter part of this paper. In this address I am drawing heavily on the 1974 survey of energy resources published just recently by the World Energy Conference. I do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, the survey is the latest and most comprehensive publication of its kind; secondly, it is the result of several years' work by a panel of eminent people, from all the energy industries and from some 16 widely spread countries; thirdly, substantial assistance was given by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in its compilation; and, finally, to let all know of the existence of the book, as I believe it to be a source document for all those interested in world energy resources. The United Nations "J" series of statistical papers provide important information on the annual production and consumption of and trade in the various forms of energy. In their respective areas, these two publications are primary information sources. Our present sources of energy throughout the world are fossil fuel deposits (coal, oil, gas), nuclear materials, water, geothermal, solar and tidal - but we are at present heavily dependent upon the natural stores of non-renewable fossil energy resources. Fig. 1 shows the changing use of energy resources in the present century. A comparison between 1900 and 1973 shows clearly the shift which has taken place.

As a society, the retiring age of workers is increasing. Individuals are having to consider working to an older age (beyond 55 years), the reason being to æpay offÆ debt, maintain a quality of life or, as a bigger picture, because society simply cannot afford the aging population. The Government is encouraging and promoting those approaching retirement to work to an older age to alleviate the financial burden of an aging population. In a working context those aged 55 years and over accounted for ten per cent of the Australian workforce in 1998 with this age group expected to account for half of the growth in the workforce between now and 2016. For the 60 - 64 years which account for less than three per cent in 1998, this group is expected to account for 15 per cent of the growth in the same period. As a result of individuals who have worked all their lives and in some cases æphysically hardÆ, they do not fully enjoy their years of retirement as a time when they get to choose what they want to do rather than what they have to do. Of particular interest are the physical or health related conditions that individuals end up with and the restrictions that ensue resulting in an individual being incapacitated either physically or with respect to the state of their health.

Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.
