Column flotation is receiving increased interest from both an industrial and research perspective in Australia. The traditional overseas application as a molybdenum cleaning cell is being expanded and a number of new applications as cleaners, scavengers and roughers are emerging in Australia. The success of column flotation has hinged on the new understanding developing from the work of Finch- and coworkers at McGill University, Canada, particularly in relation to scale-up parameters and model development. The aspiring column flotation user in Australia now a has wealth of experience to draw on when deciding on the correct procedure to follow during the process evaluation and plant installation stages of development. However, some aspects relating to column design, such as aeration mechanisms, require careful evaluation.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. Performance of draglines in large scale overburden stripping operations is critical to the efficiency of a major section of the Australian Coal Mining Industry. Optimisation of dragline productivity requires an understanding of a range of operating conditions and constraints. One of the least understood of these operations is the process of bucket filling and how this may vary with respect to variable operating conditions.Studies conducted at The University of Queensland over a number of years into this problem have enabled the mechanics of excavating to be assessed for different types of fragmented rock. In relation to bucket filling, factors such as fill volume, digging time and energy consumption have been found to be significant factors in optimising bucket design, bucket rigging and operational techniques.

Infrastructure is defined as all those parts of a mining development which are not directly concerned with mining and mineral processing. Infrastructure is of significant and growing importance in the overall develop- ment of mines, and the costs could be critical in determining the viability of a project. Prior to_project authorisation, feasibility studies are required, often in considerable detail, to determine costs with adequate reliability. It is necessary that the Engineer should be adequately briefed for carrying out these studies and that good liaison and communication with the Owner be maintained. Methods, costs, order of accuracy, and some special requirements of these studies are discussed. After project authorisation, rapid im- plementation of the proposals is generally desired. A suggested organisation and method for this implementation is presented and dis- cussed. Comments on fees, and particular points in the relationship between Owner and Consulting Engineer are given. Particular reference is made to differences in conditions compared with public works projects. Realistic attitudes of mind towards environmental matters, industrial relations, and contractual relationships are advocated.

The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

However the ash, particularly in the smaller fractions, was found to be higher due to the previously mentioned friable nature of contaminant material. Following evaluation of this additional information, the proposed washery design was reconsidered. Three basic process schemes were examined. 1. A jig with two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for treatment of three different size ranges. 2. A heavy medium vessel, two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for the different size fractions. 3. A jig for initial treatment of the total feed (that is all sizes) with single-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for rewashing of the intermediate and smaller size Fractions.

Callie underground gold mine is part of the Newmont Tanami Operations, and is now the primary provider of ore to the Granites processing Mill. The Callie underground mine has produced in excess of 7.6 million tonnes (Mtpa) of ore, since production began in 1998, with a current production rate of 1.9 Mtpa. Callie underground uses sublevel open stoping with extraction through a combination of primary and secondary stopes. The primary stope filling strategy utilises cement aggregate fill (CAF) to allow full recovery of secondary stopes. The Callie backfill operation has had a continuous testing program in place during this time, which has resulted in a great deal of information available for post fill analysis. All CAF placement into primary stopes for Callie has been via surface boreholes and this has given Callie mine an understanding of some of the issues related to borehole design, type of linings to use depending on angle, depth and quantity of fill into stopes. Finally backfill barricades at Callie have undergone a number of changes during the time to optimise the design based on whether CAF or sand fill is used. This paper discusses the CAF backfill practices and testing methods used for backfilling operations at Callie.

I start with some lines from "Pleasures of Hope" by the poet Campbell, published in 1798, which sets the flavour of what I am going to say. They blissful omens bid my spirit see The boundless fields of rapture yet to be; I watch the wheels of Nature's mazy plan, And learn the future by the past of man. I hope to echo the poet's optimistic view of what is yet to come. I am not sure I can find all the omens blissful but we all have some experience of what the wheels of Nature's mazy plan get up to. His advice to learn the future by the past of man seemed sensible to follow, so on the principle that the past of several men would be better than one alone I invited Alan Attwood, Maurice Cahalan, Gavin Moncrieff, Derek Temple, and Peter Wright to help me prepare this address; I am most grateful to them for their contributions. Of the technologies covered in this sequence of keynote addresses, metallurgy is the one which is closest to our consumers. On the age-old principle, which I do not expect to see changed in the 21st Century, that production is about providing the customer with what he wants, when he wants it, where he wants it, and at a price he can afford, I think we should start by trying to see how the market place is likely to develop, and to work back from there to review what technology we need to meet these demands.

Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. In the mid-1970s, trucking ore from 400 m depth to the surface was perceived to be the practical and economic limit for metalliferous underground mines. Improvements in truck design and decline development resulted in the economic depth of haul exceeding 600 m by the mid-1990s. Today, mine operators and contractors are planning to use trucks for ore haulage from depths in excess of 1000 m. The authors of this paper estimate that there are in excess of 300 diesel-powered trucks operating in mines in Australia, and that by the year 2005 more than five per cent of these trucks will be æroad trainsÆ (ie trucks towing powered trailers or truck-trailer combinations). This paper examines the road train concept, presents cost and performance data and describes the advantages and disadvantages of the road train system as well as proposing the types of applications for use of road trains in Australian metalliferous underground mines. Truck performance is based on payload and average speed (expressed as tonnes x kilometres per engine hour (t km/h)). A road train with a powered trailer has a large payload capacity and two engines to provide a high ratio of power to gross weight. Thus it is possible to exceed 300 t km/h per cycle for an average haulage gradient of 1:9 compared to 250 t km/h for conventional articulated dump trucks (ADTs). It is likely that road trains in excess of 100 t capacity will have application for level ore haulage at large mines in Australia.

Removal of moisture in steam-fluidized, mainly steam-heated, fluidized beds makes possible significant energy savings over conventional forms of large-scale drying. The systens are described and their applications to brown coal and alumina hydrate are reviewed. In application to brown coal the use of the system to permit meeting diurnal variation in power station output, and the use of triple-effect drying to minimise coal usage and to avoid the necessity of recovering in the turbines the energy in the steam from the last dryer are discussed. To facilitate the rapid adoption of the systems proposed, studies are being made of heat-transfer to dried coal, of moisture equilibrium in pressurized and vacuum systems, of tapered beds as a means of reducing carrier steam and permitting wider size variation, and of the use of carrier solids for drying lump materials.

The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...
