"Ventilation models are invaluable tools for both prediction of routine daily ventilation changesin an operating mine to circuit performance expectations at the mine in 20 yearsÆ time. Arguably ventilation offi cers are becoming increasingly reliant on maintaining an accurate ventilation model with which to do their work. This paper relates to the practical assessment of the accuracy and thus ability of a mine site ventilation model to be reliably utilised on such varied tasks. The author's experience shows that in some cases the incumbent model is found to be in a state of tune that demonstrates a mine wide detailed assessment of branch resistances is simply not required. The money spent on a detailed mine wide ventilation survey that is not required would be far bett er served purchasing much needed monitoring equipment, rather than fixing something that is possibly not even broken. The term ænot rocket scienceÆ has been incorporated into the title of this paper because it appears that many practitioners believe that circuit validation is diffi cult. As long as clear att ention to detail is paid to the actual data collection process then drawing an accuracy comparison between the circuit performance and the model performance at any particular point in time, is really very simple. This paper will show a manner in which a circuit can be analysed to determine its actual state of health by using various diagnostic tools and tips. It will help ensure that subsequent work scopes to address any highlighted model defi ciencies can be more effi ciently scoped and targeted. It will hopefully remind operational people that such self assessments can easily be done æin houseÆ if the appropriate steps are followed."

Leaching column techniques and microbiological methods have been described in detail in Madgwick and Ralph (1980) and Madgwick, Ralph and Sadler (1981).Sixty-nine kilograms of copper porphyry ore (0.4 per cent Cu, 2.7 per cent Fe) (particle size 2.4-11.2 mm; 60 The effect of sodium chloride (O.6M) irrigation on bacterial leaching of Bougainville copper porphyry ore was studied.Viability of suspended Thiobacillus ferrooxidants was reduced to less than 10 cells/ml in NaCI (O.6M) compared with 10' eells/ml in dilute II,SO, (0.01 M, pll 2). Salt irrigation had no significant effect on heterotrophic and sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Increascd short term recovery of copper (145 g/tonne/ 15 days) was followed by a marked decrease in tenors to less than 20 mg/litre/day compared with an acid leach, steady release, of 110 mg/litre/day. Resumption of acid leaching restored average solution copper to 46 mg/litre/day and the viability of suspended T Ierrooxidates to 10 cells/ml.Quantitative removal of sodium ehloride from ore particles was difficult and t races of NaCI remained for more than 200 days.

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. Were it simply a matter of extracting tin from the simple tin sulphide, the proposition would undoubtedly be simple enough. When, however, other valuable metallic sulphides are combined with the tin, and it is required to separate these intomarketable products, then the proposition becomes somewhat complex, and such is the case with the class of material of which I am about to write. The locality where it occurs is Howell, New South Wales, and chiefly at the Conrad Silver-Lead Mine. The tin sulphide occurs chemically alloyed with copper, iron and other metals associated with galena, pyrites, mispickel, blende and silver sulphide in varying proportions, and generally in a gangue of highly crystallised quartz.Several varieties of tin sulphides occur, and from the following analyses of three minerals, these being specimens specially selected free from foreign matters, it will be seen that the chemical composition is somewhat complex.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an underground sublevel caving mine located in north-west Queensland with a production rate of 6.4 Mt/a. The mine has sublevels spaced with a 25 m vertical interval. The production process on each level starts with the drilling and firing of a blind uphole rise to start the slot extraction. These rises are fired as a single shot and routinely need to achieve a design height of 22 m to 30 m depending on the local mine geometry. If the rise fails to perform as designed then the production phase of the level is delayed with significant rework required to remedy the situation.This paper describes the process that the EHM team has followed to improve the first time performance of each rise. The improvement process commenced with a review of results from previous rises and resulted in the identification of a number of improvement opportunities. A revised holistic approach was established for the process, which included involvement from operators and engineers. Through continued measurement and review of rise performance, inputs to the process were improved to a point where reliable results can now be expected. The successful performance of subsequent rises has been verified through a comprehensive quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) program. Before quality control processes were implemented, the success rate of blind uphole rises was only 11 per cent (one out of nine rises) at EHM. In comparison, the success rates have been vastly improved to 25 per cent (one out of four) and 75 per cent (three out of four) respectively following two stages of improvements. Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each projectÆs feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.

A study was undertaken to quantify the differences in performance between a full-length encapsulated cable bolt and a partially encapsulated cable bolt. Much research has been reported on the differences in cable bolt design and operational parameters such as borehole diameter and grout type with much of this based on the Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT). However, there is a gap in knowledge surrounding the effect of anchorage length on load transfer and cable bolt performance particularly with respect to the role of the bulb in modified cable bolt designs. The objective of this study was to expand the existing knowledge base of cable bolt performance with the intent of developing a revised design criterion. Alongside a comprehensive review of current cable support theory, design and practice, a series of pull tests was undertaken to compare each anchorage method using a high capacity modified cable bolt. The results serve to confirm earlier work on fully encapsulated anchorage. Both the peak load capacity and stiffness of the fully encapsulated cable bolt were nearly double that of the partially anchored cable bolt. When the tests were repeated in an oversized borehole, while there tended to be more variation in performance, there was little significant difference in the mean results. In addition to anchorage length, there are other factors that contribute to cable bolt performance including in order of sensitivity: embedment length, water-to-cement ratio of the grout, type of grout and borehole diameter. The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...

SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

The study focuses on sulfide oxidation processes in unweathered pyrite-rich mine tailings from a soil-covered impoundment in northern Sweden. To simulate the oxygen-limited conditions in water saturated tailings two long-term column experiments were performed. Results are presented for the first 11 months of the experiments at room temperature. The tailings used in the experiments were of two different grain sizes (one coarse grained, in the range 0.02 - 0.6 mm with a grain surface area of 1.86 m2 g-1, and one fine-grained, in the range 0.0015 - 0.06 mm with a grain surface area of 10.00 m2 g-1) and with slightly different mineralogical composition. The S:Fe molar ratio in the leachates (1.0 - 1.5) indicates either that pyrrhotite is the main iron sulfide undergoing oxidation in our experiments, or, alternatively that the S:Fe molar ratio in the leachate is determined by pyrite weathering in conjunction with other processes releasing iron or immobilising sulfate. However, speciation modelling of the leachates indicates that ferrihydrite was close to saturation, suggesting that a ferric oxyhydroxide may have dissolved/ precipitated during the experimental period, thereby affecting the S:Fe molar ratio. Pyrite oxidation rates obtained from the two column experiments during æsteady-stateÆ were 2.25 + 10-13 and 8.45 + 10-14 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Pyrrhotite oxidation rates, as an alternative, were 2.31 + 10-12 and 1.24 + 10-11 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Natural microbial activity was confirmed in both the tailings and the leachates; therefore, the obtained oxidation rates are not strictly abiotic. It is thus concluded, based on the experimental results, that tailing heterogeneity will result in zones with different oxidation rates, related to their physical and chemical properties.

A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

Most geostatistical techniques applied to the estimation of ore reserves assume relatively unifonn grade and thickness within an ore deposit environment. In shear-hosted mineralisation this rarely occurs. The distribution of mineralisation is controlled by the kinematic and geometric variation within the shear zone. Although the kinematic variation is dependent primarily on the temperature (and consequently the depth) of formation of the deposit, the geometric variation appears to be relatively insensitive to this parameter. Shoot mineralisation is controlled either by the intersection of secoodary shear planes (brittle deformation) or the stretching lineation of the mylonitic fabric (ductile defonnation).Once the shear geometry is clearly identified, it is critical to review the distribution of grade and thickness of mineralisation. The practice of cutting high-grade intersections without reference to the shear model leads to underestimation of the amount of gold in the deposit. High-grade shoots may occur as pipe-shaped bodies within the system; their identification is essential for both resource estimation and mine planning purposes.

This paper reviews the history of environmental assessment in New Zealand with reference to mineral developments. Emphasis is given to larger more controversial projects particularly metal mines. The changing role and application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Procedures is examined in the context of changes in the government's environmental administration and the response of the Ministry of Energy's resource allocation group. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the present environmental assessment activities and on the allocation of administration of priorities in the Ministry. The Ministry of Energy has effectively ceased to exist.

South African gold reserves extend to great depths. However, strategies for the mining of such deposits have changed only slightly over the past number of years. Regional support at depth is currently provided by rock pillars and backfill. Many problems have been experienced with these regional support practices at deeper levels. In this paper several alternative forms of regional support are described which include the use of concrete, the use of back area caving and confinement to strengthen pillars. These new concepts are supported by numerical and laboratory modelling and in situ results.

Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) is a self-contained, highly instrumented, mobile pilot plant. It was developed as part of the AMIRA P9 project, primarily to determine ore floatability characteristics and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies. This paper describes the use of the FCTR in validating the AMIRA P9 flotation model and modelling methodology. In 2001 the FCTR was installed and operated in parallel with WMCÆs (now BHP BillitonÆs) Kambalda Nickel Operation. The FCTR was operated using four different circuit configurations of increasing complexity. Metallurgical surveys, cell characterisation measurements and batch flotation tests were performed around each circuit. This allowed the calibration of a number of flotation models using a combination of data from one, two, three or four circuit configurations. The calibrated flotation models were then validated using predictive validation. To do this, data around a further five FCTR circuit configurations were collected (three of which are presented in this paper). The performance of each of the five circuit configurations was predicted using JKSimFloat V6.1 and the parameters from the various calibrated flotation models. The predicted performance was compared to the experimentally determined performance of each circuit. The validation of the AMIRA P9 model was shown to be largely successful except in the case where the reagent addition (depressant) to the validation circuit was different to that in the calibration circuits. The results also provided information regarding the required complexity of the calibration circuit and how many calibration circuits are required to obtain an accurate prediction of circuit performance. These results have increased the confidence in the AMIRA P9 flotation modelling methodology and have provided important information on what data must be collected to allow the accurate prediction of plant performance using the floatability component modelling approach.

An underground storage and filling distribution system is presently being established at North Broken Hill Limited in the No.3 Shaft area. This has been necessitat- ed by the dependence of the present filling system on the No.2 Shaft and its imminent closure due to cessation of production. The storage will consist of three tanks excavated in low grade ore, between the No.20 and No.21 levels, at approximately 2700 feet below the surface. The tanks will each have a capacity of 1500 cu yds. Consideration was given for surface storage, although under- ground storage was thought to have greater merits. Two tanks have been excavated, and are in operation. Three or more outlets are installed beneath each tank, with horizontal connections into the No.21 level 'mixing box'. Water decants from the top of the fill in the tanks, and passes into a decant water sump, at the bottom of which is a borehole to the No.21 level. This is then connected to the mixing box and water used as make-up water with the semiwet solids for transport into the existing pipe distribution system. Preliminary results of the system have been satisfactory and it is envisaged that this system will readily cope with the filling demands of the future.
