The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating the treatment of refractory gold ores. Chlorination in the treatment of refractory gold ores is applicable in many low-grade gold operations. When usable, this treatment provides an economic means of consuming sulfides and deactivating disseminated organic carbon. Chlorination, however, is a pretreatment technique that requires the neutralization of the chlorine prior to leaching the ore with cyanide. Research by the Bureau has extended the present chlorination technology to allow for the recovery of gold without the use of cyanide and allow treatment of some ores presently deemed untreatable by gold operators using cyanidation or chlorination/cyanidation techniques. Chlorination without carbon of two carbonaceous ores extracted between 1 and 20 pct of the gold; however, carbon-in-chlorine (CICL) treatments resulted in about 90-pct recovery with a reduction in carbon loading. A statistical design campaign for stripping metallic gold from the carbon loaded in a chlorine environment demonstrated elutions exceeding 90 pct.

On any given mine site the water system is contingent upon its initial design. Through time the initial design is adjusted by a myriad of water management options in order to improve water system performance or to adapt to a new production capacity or method at the mine site. These options generally do not comprehensively consider energy requirements, so it is unlikely that any given mine water system will be optimised in terms of both water and energy uses. Thus this may simply shift constraints of efficiency of one resource dimension, water, to another, energy. As a result, changes in water systems would cause more energy-related issues to mining companies. For example, the companies would have an increase in operational cost and/or pay more for carbon tax with changes in their water system. Therefore, in order to avoid undesirable and potential unforseen energy and infrastructure issues in a mine life cycle, it is essential to select suitable water management options for a mine considering both water and energy resources simultaneously.Considering water and energy criteria in evaluating water management options consists of net water volume availability, net operational energy demand and net water replacement energy demand. Ideal water management options should be high in water volume availability but low in both operational energy demand and water replacement energy demand. A water option would also be favourable if it has low potential of causing adverse environmental impacts such as lowering groundwater tables due to groundwater withdrawal, or elevating saline constituents in surface waters when reusing brine for dust suppression. However, these environmental impacts are not considered in this analysis.This article presents a graphical method to assess mine water management options, based on these three criteria. Barium anomalies in drainage sediments can act as indicators of barite mineralization and path- finders for lead-zinc mineralization. Their detection in an arid climate has been investigated in two areas of Saudi Arabia. At Rabigh, 150 km north of Jeddah, barium anomalies found in wadi sediments reflect barite veins which occupy Tertiary faults in Precambrian metavolcanics and granodiorite. In the Wadi ad Dawasir area, 650 km east of Jeddah, the sediments of wadis draining the Jabal Tuwayq escarpment have been found to contain anomalous concentrations of barium derived from diagenetic barite in the Sudair formation siltstones and shales. Barium dispersion in these wadis is predominantly clastic. Near to the source rocks, barium occurs in relatively coarse grains of barite. Owing to the three well-developed cleavages of barite, its crystals readily break into cleavage flakes during fluvial transport in flash floods; as a result, the longest anomalous dispersion trains are found in the 250 to 600 um fraction. Wadi sediments finer than 250 um have relatively constant and low barium contents, being dominantly composed of windblown sand.

This paper investigates the causes of low effective utilisation of the production drill fleet at the Telfer Underground Gold Mine, as measured by the percussion hours per shift. The first part of this paper focuses on a site time and motion study conducted to accurately identify shift time allocation and optimal drilling parameters (manual versus automatic, and suitable flushing mediums for varying ground conditions) as well as quantifying the business potential for automated or remotely operated production drilling. The second part of the paper focuses on the rate of successful hole completion for automated production drilling during shift changes. Two main areas of drill optimisation were identified. Firstly, a site-specific drilling procedure was established so as to ensure that all operators were drilling using optimal parameters. Total production metres per rig increased by 10.7 per cent as a result of the implementation of this standard. It was observed that a 25 per cent faster overall drill cycle was achieved using air mist flushing, and that manual drilling achieves a 19 per cent faster overall drilling cycle in comparison to automated drilling. Secondly, routine provision to the maintenance department of automation reliability reports that outlined the principal causes of unsuccessful hole completion led to an increase in production metres of a further 4.1 per cent, measured between January 2007 and August 2007. First hole automation reliability increased from 39 per cent to over 77 per cent over the same time period. Second hole automation completion was increased to 74 per cent, leading to a higher proportion of production achieved through automated technologies.

The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.

The thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique was used to measure the kinetics of thinning of single foam films and disjoining pressures in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl). The results were analysed in view of the Reynolds equation to determine the role of surface forces in film thinning. It was found that film thinning is controlled by surface forces at thicknesses below approximately 200 nm. It was also found that hydrophobic force plays an important role particularly at low SDS and NaCl concentrations. The values of the hydrophobic force constant (K232) estimated from the film thinning experiments were used to predict the disjoining pressure isotherm using the extended DLVO theory, which were found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. The TFPB technique was also used to measure the equilibrium thicknesses (He) of the foam films stabilised by a non-ionic surfactant, n-octanol, in the presence of NaCl. At a given ionic strength, He increased noticeably with increasing octanol concentration at very low concentrations. This observation suggests that hydrophobic force is at its maximum level in the absence of surfactant and decreases with increasing surfactant concentration. The results obtained with the single foam films were used to explain the stability of the three-dimensional foams.

Modelling of the Sala Agitated Mill (SAM) using a simplified solution to the population balance approach has been carried out. The rate of breakage is modified by the mill power, providing predictions of the resulting product size distribution for different grinding conditions and mill sizes. The power of the mill is estimated by a physically derived function, using an assumption that the mill power consumption mainly arises from the ball to ball friction within the mill. The grinding efficiency, depending on the media ball size and pulp density is approximated in the model. Experimental work on grinding a complex sulphide ore using a pilot scale SAM 7.5 has been carried out. Good agreement has been found between the data from the test campaign and the simulated values. The model has also been validated with experimental data from a pilot grinding of calcium carbonate and from an industrial mill. The model is included in the USIM PAC simulation software.

Energy costs are steadily increasing worldwide while the availability and quality of water are becoming contentious issues between the users (municipalities/households, agriculture, manufacturing and mining). Refractory gold ore treatment - pressure oxidation, biological oxidation and roasting (ultra-fine grinding, or UFG, will not be discussed here as this process only reduces the particle size of the feed prior to cyanidation) - requires substantially more energy and water quantity and quality are vastly different compared to the standard and simple flow sheets used for treating non-refractory ores This paper will provide an overview of the energy and water requirements for treating refractory gold ores, a topic which does not appear to have been considered previously in the literature.CITATION:Roberto, F, Snyder, J, Dodd, J and Dunne, R, 2013. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the efficiency of machine-mounted active explosion suppression systems (AESS). Their proven effectiveness against methane explosions is highlighted, as well as their additional potential when used as an early warning system should frictional sparks occur during the coal-cutting operation at the coalface.Methane and coal dust explosions remain one of the primary and unpredictable risks in underground coal mining. Although technologies such as proactive ventilation, methane monitoring and wet-head cutting systems are widely used as preventative measures, there are no fail-safe controls able to reduce the risk to zero. None of these controls is designed to be able to counter the negligence associated with human error or to deal with rapidly changing face conditions which could lead to flammable gas ignitions. Machine-mounted AESS have been installed on various continuous miners as an additional control to further reduce the risk of ignitions and to act as a safety shield when all the other precautions taken have failed. This was the primary motive for the development of AESS. As an additional feature, the ExploSpot® AESS is being enhanced to identify frictional ignition sources at the coalface that reach a predefined monitoring level. This functionality may serve as a further effective preventative measure.As part of ensuring coalmine operational safety, the detection of frictional ignitions can play a huge role in creating heightened awareness of potentially dangerous situations. By being able to process the frictional spark burning pattern, the AESS could support the decision-making process regarding whether to continue the coal-cutting operation, whether there is a need for maintenance or whether the operation should be stopped completely due to the increased risk of a flammable gas ignition and an ensuing explosion.CITATION:Spaeth, A and du Plessis, J J L, 2015. Vitrinite of humic source (often designated as vitrinite A) is the maceral by which the rank of a coal ought to be determined. Therefore its recognition, and the precise identification of other vitrinites is essential. The majority of Australian petrologists are not differentiating between the vitrinite group macerals in maturation studies, the results of which have led to unexplained phenomena in coal characterisations and evaluation, such as 'reactive inertinites' and inaccurate predictions in petroleum source rock studies. The Callide coal has been chosen as a case study, with examples from other coals. The coal seams from the Callide Coal Measures show variation in the predominance of some macerals, indicating successions of environmental changes. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the study of the Callide coal has enabled a better understanding of the nature and origin of some of the less understood macerals such as micrinite and vitrinite B. Two forms of vitrinite have been observed, each with a distinct reflectance range. The wood-sourced vitrinite A displays an average reflectance of 0.56 per cent, and a range of 05. - 0.7, implying a higher rank than the 0.49 per cent Ro total vitrinite reflectance recorded in previous publications. Vitrinite B is one of the most commonly-occurring macerals in the Callide coal. The lower-reflecting vitrinite B which forms bands, often several hundred microns in thickness, in TEM appears to be electron transparent lipid rich. Vitrinite B is interpreted to represent accumulations of leaves, and is believed to be a major source of hydrocarbons in Australian sedimentary basins. The Callide coal has entered the oil window, and oil has been generated from some exinite, cutinite, and resinite, as evident from the amber to light brown fluorescence of exinite and the presence of exsudatinite in cell cavities and cleats. However vitrinite B, the major potential source of oil, is seen under the microscope to be generating oil, thus placing this coal at the top of the oil window. Micrinite, the origin of which has been much debated, occurs as cell filling or infill of spaces between laminations in vitrinite B.

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. In dense medium processes for the beneficiation of minerals the consumption of medium (generally ferrosilicon) represents a major component of the operating cost. This provides a strong incentive for improvements in heavy medium recovery circuit design and operation. A major thrust in heavy medium plant design over the past decade has therefore been towards circuits which reduce medium losses. In this paper recent trends in plant design are examined in relation to the factors infl uencing circuit performance and medium losses. Operational details ' which have a significant effect on losses are discussed and illustrated by means of plant and pilot plant test data, with particular emphasis on the performance of wet drum magnetic separators. While the emphasis is on reducing the consumption of the high-cost ferrosilicon medium used in minerals beneficiation, most of the principles described in this paper are equally relevant to the design and operation of magnetite recovery circuits for coal preparation plants.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. Large mining operations require a high percentage of the capital invested in mobile and fixed mining machinery. From an investment point of view this expenditure must be met by an equally high rate of return, thus the need for high plant and equipment reliability is of major importance. Equipment downtime is undesirable and very costly, resulting in lost production and revenue, which is of critical importance to successful mining operations. One of the solutions to this problem may be found in the form of competent computerised maintenance management software systems, which help to reduce the problem of breakdowns. These software assist the engineers for the management of service orders, resource allocation, progress monitoring as well as costing. They also facilitate the communication of targets and objectives among the service personnel. A computerised maintenance management software called MAINPAC was used to record and plan the activities of mobile equipment maintenance in a large mining operation in Western Australia. Among the details recorded were equipment data, service history, machine downtimes, previous maintenance, job planning and the resource required. This information further helped to analyse the maintenance efficiency, availability and the reliability of the equipment.

he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.

Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. After press-casting the ISF in Luwa coalmine, the pressure-difference of inner-outer increased, meaning the effect of external conditions on the pressure-difference decreased, showing that it could plug the air leakage effectively.CITATION:Qin, B T, Shi, Q L, Lu, Y, Zhu, C, Li, F L and Jia, Y W, 2015. Intensive exploration of the Archaean ultra mafic sequence bordering the Kambalda dome has resulted in the discovery of at least ten dis- tinct areas of nickel sulphide mineralisation subsequent to the initial drill intersection in January, 1966. Sulphide ore reserves to June 30, 1972 were 19.36 million tonnes at 3.3% nickel after mining of 3.0 million tonnes at 3:7%,nickel since production commenced in March, 1967. About 75% of contained nickel metal reserves occur in sulphide concentrations located at the base of the-ultramafic sequence, in contact with underlying meta-tholeiitic basalt. The remaining reserve occurs in concentrations of sulphides within the ultramafic sequence, usually within 100 metres of the underlying contact and typically in proximity to contact mineralisation. These hanging wall orebodies are smaller, contain significantly lower con- centrations of sulphide, and generally exhibit higher Ni:S ratios than underlying contact ore- bodies. The majority of contact sulphides concentr- ations form narrow, elongate, north north-west trending bodies, closely coincident with fault bounded depressions in the contact. Detailed study of the Lunnon Shoot ore environment in- dicates that it was a locus of crustal failure during, and subsequent to, emplacement of ultra- mafic rocks. Resultant structures parallel and
