The role of automation in the environmental management of the various stages of mining projects is discussed. Remote sensing can be useful in the exploration phase, but tends not to have sufficient resolution for individual operations. Automatic samplers, whether for meteorology, air or water, are widely used, but can have operational problems. The environmental scientist, the electronics engineer and the computer programmer must combine in the future to develop products which are applicable, robust and simple to use.

Research and Technical Services, Department of Mines Western Australia The nine papers received for this technical session cover a very wide range of hydrological problems in various parts of the world. Three of these papers deal with hydrological predictions for new mines, while three are concerned with the prediction of water chemistry. The three remaining papers deal with gas injection as a dewatering tool, discharge formulae verification and the use of a physical model to predict subsurface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining. Hydrological problems in mine planning represent a major risk in many mining operations, booth as a potential life or equipment hazard and a major financial risk. The initial paper selected to review was therefore one by the president of a gold mining company, rather than by one of the specialist scientists, to remind us all that the main reason problems are faced and overcome in the mining industry is usually a commercial one. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyllite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that c ross-cuts the Cu, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

Although auriferous beach and fore-dune sands at Five Mile Beach south of Okarito township had been intensively mined by hand and primative mechanical methods drilling of the sandspit by the Gold Development Corporation in 1929 indicated that the grade and quantity of undisturbed black and grey sand below the water table was sufficient to support a mining operation. Worked sand above the water table also contained fair prospects. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co Ltd, was formed and an hydraulically powered, bucket ladder, sluice box dredge built. In 13 years of operation (1931 - 1943) the dredge returned 556.39 kg (17 890 oz) of gold at a recovered grade of 225.4 mg/m3. A total of ú42 000 was distributed as dividends on the ú30 000 capital investment. Recent drill and bulk sampling at the northern end of the beach has confirmed that reworking of the historic tailings by a modern gravity recovery plant would not be economic.

There has been considerable attention in the literature to coarse sizing by wet and dry screening, but these methods have not proven to be applicable to the calculation of screen capacities for fine wet sizing, desliming and media recovery: A method is presented for the calculation of the size of screens for such duties, being based on the mean particle size of the oversize material on the screen which reflects the surface area from which the fines or media must be removed. Similarly for dewatering, it is the area from which the water must be drained. Desliming, media recovery and dewatering are each considered along with water require- ments both with the feed and as wash water.

The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. A good boss will always be sought out by good men who have worked under him before, or who have heard of him from others. By a good boss we do not mean one who employs two men where one would do, or who lets the men loaf...

Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. A major constraint on sustaining high rates of production in the collieries of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales is the inability to develop panels fast enough to match the rates of extraction. This inability is particularly crippling in the case of retreat longwall mining and is due to nearly half the time in roadway drivage being spent on strata control operations such as roof support.Increased rates of roadway drivage and significantly improved roadway stability can be achieved by the application of yield pillars between parallel roadways. These pillars are designed to yield immediately upon formation and transfer the damaging roof loads away from the immediate vicinity of the roadways. Since the width of the yield pillar is the key to their successful application, it was determined through the Yield Pillar Experiment conducted by Kembla Coal and Coke Pty Ltd at West Cliff Colliery.Three experimental headings, each nominally 5.5 m wide and 2.8 m high, were driven to form two tapering pillars. The width of these pillars progressively decreased from 24 m to 3 m over a length of 154 m. The convergence between the roof and floor of the headings measured at various cross-sections corresponding to predetermined widths of the pillars are analysed in this paper to evaluate the stability of the tapering pillars at the different widths.The width of the yield pillar in a three heading development layout at West Cliff Colliery was determined to be 7.5 m.

Stawell Gold Mines operates the Magdala underground mine in western Victoria, Australia. Several orebodies are extracted by longhole open stoping at a depth of 900 m below the town of Stawell. Some stopes are backfilled with cemented slurry rock fill (CSRF) to ensure stability, increase recovery of ore reserves, minimise dilution of ore grades, and add value to the project. StawellÆs simple CSRF system is described, including the novel equipment used to minimise capital costs. Design criteria, operating procedures, monitoring systems and results are discussed in detail. Practical aspects are considered, including lessons learnt about barricades, overbreak and segregation. The economics of CSRF are discussed, including capital costs, operating costs and the total cost per ounce of gold poured. Options for mining with and without CSRF are compared in terms of return on investment and net cash flows. Examples demonstrate the method used to calculate æbreak-evenÆ stope ore grades which determine whether or not CSRF will add value in different circumstances.

There are countless petroleum and mineral fiscal systems throughout the world. This is because many petroleum and mineral producing countries have developed their own methods of calculating government take through fiscal evolution or individual negotiation. Those countries fortunate enough to have petroleum and mineral reserves within their national boundaries are naturally reluctant to yield this resource without a reasonable return for their population. As resource companies are perceived to be enormous conglomerates with endless amounts of cash and resources, governments and the general public demand reasonable division of production while these finite resources last. On the other hand, because companies engaged in the exploration for, and production of, minerals, oil and gas have to be large or lucky (preferably both) to sustain the great physical and commercial risks involved, the income and profit figures look so large that the general public sees them as an acceptable target for taxation. Taxation of the resource industry has been one of the industry's greatest cash flow problems through the years. Allen and Seba (1993) attribute this to the fact that the most equitable tax systems are those that affect the widest possible total of the population.

Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

This paper presents a new risk assessment tool for coal mine excavated slopes. This new empirical-statistical Slope Stability Assessment Methodology (SSAM) is intended for use by geotechnical engineers at both the design review and operational stages of a mine’s life to categorise the risk of an excavated coal mine slope. A likelihood of failure is determined using a new slope stability classification system for excavated coal mine slopes developed using a database of 119 intact and failed case studies sourced from open cut coal mines in Australia. Consequence of failure is based on slope height and stand-off distance at the toe of the excavated slope. Results are presented in a new risk matrix, with slope risk being divided into low, medium and high categories. The SSAM is put forward as a new risk assessment tool to assess the potential for, and consequence of, excavated coal mine slope failure. Unlike existing classification systems, assumptions about the likely failure mode or mechanism are not required. Instead, the SSAM applies an approach which compares the conditions present within the excavated slope face, with the known past performance of slopes with similar geotechnical and geometrical conditions, to estimate the slope’s propensity for failure. The SSAM is novel in that it considers the depositional history of strata in an excavated slope and how this sequence affects slope stability. It is further novel in that it does not require explicit measurements of intact rock, rock mass and/or defect strength to rapidly calculate a slope’s likelihood of failure and overall risk. Ratings can be determined entirely from visual observations of the excavated slope face. The new SSAM is designed to be used in conjunction with existing slope stability assessment tools. EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.

Asarco's newest concentrator near Troy, Montana, began operation in October 1981, and is presently milling ore at its design capacity of 7,710 metric tonnes per day. The underground room-and-pillar mine produces a readily floatable copper sulfide- native silver ore in a quartzite gangue. Major sulfide minerals are bornite and chalcocite with minor chalcopyrite; fine grained native silver occurs with the copper sulfides. There are also minor amounts of native copper and copper oxides in the ore. A rougher copper-silver concentrate is floated, reground and cleaned twice. Cleaner tail is scavenged, and the scavenger concen- trate is combined with rougher concentrate for regrinding. Rougher flotation tailing and scavenger tailing make up final mill tailing which is disposed of by spigotting into a tailing dam located 10.5 km from the mill site.
