New ZealandÆs largest gold producersÆ OceanaGold Macraes Mine is characterised by a large tonnage and relatively low grade operation. To survive in diminishing real gold prices, the operation must focus on a culture of continuous improvement. This paper presents the outcome of a supplier sponsored continuous improvement project known as the Orica Advanced Mining Services project.   In March 2004 OceanaGold (then GRD Macraes) entered into an Advanced Mining Services (AMS) project with Orica Mining Services. The motivating factor behind OceanaGoldÆs need to improve bulk waste productivity and SAG mill throughput was the planned increase in production from five million to 5.4 million tonnes per annum. A stripping ratio of ten to one meant that optimisation of the drill, blast and production functions was paramount.   The primary focus of the project was to optimise the drill and blast parameters to suit the variable rock conditions throughout the mines main operating pit (Frasers Pit). Fragmentation of the ore for presentation at the SAG mill, and cost reduction on the mining of bulk waste movement, were the primary objectives. A number of additional initiatives complimenting the interface between drill, blast and ore production were also established. These included; +        reduced ore loss through delineation of ore boundaries to allow for blast movement; +        established blasting parameters for variable geological conditions, resulting in improved fragmentation; and +        improved asset utilisation by establishing a blasting regime that angled grade control holes to be used as blastholes in the stockworks area.   A year into the project, the philosophy of continuous improvement is now in-grained at the Macraes minesite. As the project continues, the focus is on the further refining of those procedures established, to ensure a continued focus on lower unit mining production costs.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRLÆs Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRLÆs Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the sealÆs ultimate design strength. Size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

Removal of Arsenic in Fluorite Ore by Simultaneous Grinding-Leaching with NaHS Generally speaking, a high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride (HF), which is essential for the semiconductor manufacturing. With the continuous depletion of resources, novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ores are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, a low-grade fluorite ore was upgraded by removing arsenic, which is difficult to remove by conventional method. The mechano-chemical leaching of fluorite ore (i.e. the sample was ground in presence of NaHS, using a beads mill) was carried out to investigate the removal of arsenic from the low-grade fluorite. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced to 73.2 mg/kg.

Most mining projects will involve some level of financial markets price risk. This is because commodities are generally traded in $US. The project will also incur costs in $A and if based in Australia will seek to generate a return in Australian dollars. Therefore the project faces commodity, foreign exchange and interest rates risk. As a business you may wish to maintain these risks within your business. However if the project requires financing to be provided then the financiers will want to ensure that there is a level of certainty attached to the cash flows to support the debt repayments. This is achieved by hedging the financial market risks. Traditionally the hedging process has been based on underlying assumptions within project models, which incorporate views on the direction of the underlying price risk. These views can be formed in an ad hoc manner. Gathering information from a variety of sources including economic forecasting and modelling, technical analysis, seeking market expert views. However, given the historical accuracy of such forecasts locking into long-term fixed hedging arrangements can create an inflexible environment that can restrict the opportunity to benefit from the underlying volatility of financial markets.

Electronic detonators bring a fundamental and radical change to the potential of rockbreaking operations. The immense technical challenge of safely merging electronic systems with explosives has been largely overcome, but a surprisingly difficult obstacle has been to convert users to the much more capable electronic systems, in routine as opposed to exotic applications. Unit cost is probably the main point of resistance. For years papers have confirmed significant improvements in blasting results, feeding through to enhanced bottom line value for the whole operation: much reduced environmental impact, and improved control over fragmentation, muckpile shape and overbreak. In Africa, a number of operations have been employing the technology for sufficient time to see enduring improvements in throughput, control and cost structure, and these improvements have fed through to the planning process: both the cost and the benefits are part of the plan. This has essentially rendered very unattractive the option of reverting to pyrotechnic systems and incurring the penalties previously unseen but now understood to be avoidable. Examples given are of improved throughput at opencast and underground mines, and greatly extended life at an urban quarry. The general experience of management in implementing the technology is that it over-delivers: adopted to solve one particular problem, significant other issues are also addressed. These extra benefits were quite logical, but not at all obvious prior to implementation. Exploring this reality is essential for harvesting the benefits of the technology sooner rather than later.

The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.

Contemporary mine wastewater flows are subject to stringent water quality standards before discharge to local waterways. Strict criteria are often applied as a result of fears of extensive acid mine drainage; a feature of the many abandoned mine adits around the Coromandel, Central Otago, and the West Coast. In most cases the USEPA water quality criteria have been used to set treated wastewater discharge water quality standards. In future it is possible that the recently published ANZECC water quality criteria guidelines will be used for this purpose. The ANZECC guidelines also provide for the establishment of discharge criteria at specific sites, rather than accept the trigger values. The use of site-specific criteria for treated wastewater mine discharges was pioneered at the Golden Cross gold mine, near Waihi, in the late 1980s. The procedure used to derive water quality criteria was based on USEPA guidelines. In developing the Golden Cross criteria, only species that occur, or are similar to those that occur in the Waitekauri River were used. The mine commenced discharge of treated wastewater in 1991, and macroinvertebrate communities in the vicinity of the discharge point have been regularly monitored twice a year for the past 12 years. Despite fluctuations in community composition and abundance over that period, no permanent significant changes in the macroinvertebrate communities occurred between sites above and below the treated wastewater discharge. The success of the site-specific criteria at Golden Cross has shown how the application of this methodology can result in the protection of aquatic life while allowing for the discharge of treated mine wastewater.

In underground ore mining of copper ore, lead-zinc ore, tin ore and fluorspare in German Democratic Republic geological situation is characterized by ore deposits of small thickness and great variability of ore grades and mining conditions. For long range mining strategy and short-term planning of production a model was developed fitting to make optimal economic mining decisions. Starting point of the model is a cost function representing all direct costs per unit recoverable metal in concentrate for each stoping unit (ore reserve block). In the costs function the results of regression analysis of ore grade and metal recovery in concentration plant were considered. All stoping units (ore reserve blocks) of a mine were arranged to growing direct costs. The relationships of recoverable metal, ore tonnages and corresponding costs were plotted in a diagram. The data processed by- computer and the graphic representation of the results make possible 1. economic evaluation of stopes and ore reserve blocks, 2. estimation of cut off grade, 3. optimization of works planning.

During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. Queensland legislation, industry codes and policies relating to mine rehabilitation and closure create the expectation of successful progressive rehabilitation and that the post-mining environment is being returned to a condition suited to a pre-agreed, beneficial end use. Yet none of the rehabilitated mined land in the Bowen Basin has been certified as successful by authorities suggesting there is a gap between current rehabilitation and the full environmental outcomes that the legislation could deliver. We tested the veracity of this perspective and reflect on where responsibility for any discrepancy lies.We first reviewed current Queensland legislation and industry codes relating to stakeholder engagement, rehabilitation, closure planning and post-mining land use. We tested the accessibility of the documentation trail for several recent coal-mining projects in the Bowen Basin and examined the level of detail in approval documentation. We then assessed the rehabilitation performance reports of these mines in relation to the contents of their approval documents. Legislation, guidelines and codes repeatedly emphasise the need to plan for closure before mine operations begin and to progressively perform rehabilitation with an agreed end-use in mind. Early stakeholder involvement in these processes and transparency of actions and outcomes are also encouraged by government publications. Overall, in terms of transparency, we found that relevant documents are generally available to the persistent enquirer. However, the rehabilitation and closure undertakings given in both mine company and regulator documentation were commonly generic and rehabilitation obligations were not explicitly incorporated into rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation reporting was also weak in that no distinction is required between successful and unsuccessful revegetation, nor to closure objectives and mine completion criteria. Responsibility for the apparent disconnect between regulatory intent and actual performance appears to begin with the regulator too readily allowing generic information and in not requiring performance reporting to correspond with approved post-mine conditions. As a result, companies may have a much greater rehabilitation and closure risk than mine management expects. A cave-to-mill study being conducted at the New Afton block caving operation demonstrated the potential for sensor-based ore sorting equipment to reject waste and improve the grade of feed to the mill. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution entry associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. Online monitoring and bulk sorting systems have the potential to alleviate this problem and improve the productivity of caving operations while reducing energy and water requirements for each tonne of concentrate produced.As part of the cave-to-mill study, the suitability of a range of sensors, such as X-ray fluorescence and induction-type sensors, to sort mine production at the New Afton mine was investigated. Results showed that the discrimination of ore and waste can potentially be carried out by implementing surficial sensors into the material handling system. The study also showed that a combination of sensor outputs could be used to identify a certain ore type so that pre-emptive changes can be made in the mill to improve beneficiation performance. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. To establish the design and the capacity of the Stanwell Magnesium Plant, Australian Magnesium Corporation Ltd (AMC) with Fluor Australia has modelled the operation of the magnesium plant using ARENA Simulation Modelling. The reliability model has been used to evaluate: surge capacities required between different sections of the plant; critical equipment requiring standby capacity; the number of trains required for different sections of the plant; and potential capital cost reduction options. The reliability model was established using the detailed Process Flow Diagrams, reliability information from literature and maintenance, operation and start-up experience from the Demonstration Plant. The model was run with different plant configurations to assist AMC in determining the most effective configuration to provide the production capacity at the lowest capital cost. The model was not only able to confirm the plant capacity to the independent technical expert but was able to minimise quantitative risk by minimising the quantities of hazardous materials on site. Fluor Australia provided the ARENA simulation expertise and has used this software for optimising new plant design and to establish improvements in operating plants. Reliability modelling is a normal feature of chemical plant design but is rarely used in the resource industry. The experience gained by AMC in the modelling system has indicated that metallurgical plant design can be improved by the application of reliability modelling.

Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. The complexity of understanding the whole thickening process to achieve real performance improvements cannot be underestimated. The last significant change in feedwell design was more than 15 years ago with the introduction of self-dilution systems û firstly with OutotecÆs Autodil, followed by FLSmidthÆs E-Duc. Now, following many years of extensive in-house research, including close collaboration with AMIRA and the CSIRO, Outotec has launched the next generation Vane Feedwell. The Vane Feedwell has been globally patented and installed at various sites. This paper briefly outlines the feedwellÆs development using CFD modelling and its subsequent performance in a æreal lifeÆ site installation. Plant results of the first commercial Vane Feedwell, in a mineral sands application, are discussed. The Vane Feedwell was retrofitted so comparative data of pre- and post-installation is shown.

Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.
