A simple and rapid method for delennining gold and silver in carbon samples is described. The method involves dissolution of carbon ash in a strong oxidising medium of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Gold and silver are determined in the resultant solution using atomic absorption speetrometry (AAS). The method is efficient and reproducible. Gold results are comparable to the standard fire assay results, with agreement of results within ± 5 per cent. The co-efficients of variation for gold and silver are 0.37 and 0.39 per cent respectively for six replicate analyses. The analysis of gold and silver in a batch of ten carbon samples can be completed in approximately four hours.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. This paper presents an iterative net present value (NPV) maximisation method to determine the optimum surface to underground transition depth for an orebody to be mined by multiple open pits and an underground mine. The determination of transition depth from open pit to underground mining is based on global production scheduling optimisation of open pit and underground mines using mixed integer linear programming. The method is applied to a case study coming from a gold mining complex with six open pits and a large underground mine using longhole open stoping. The results indicate potential improvements of the NPV of global operations when compared to the traditional techniques based on independently optimised open pit first, followed by underground mining.CITATION:Dagdelen, K and Traore, I, 2014. The prediction of how waste materials will evolve geochemically within waste storage facilities has been the subject of hundreds of thousands of hours researched by geoscientists globally. Despite the quantity of research there are a number of significant areas of uncertainty that remain as partially resolved issues. One of the most significant issues is the applicability of scaling laboratory test results to field conditions, and the use of laboratory data for predictive calculations to determine geochemical evolution of waste materials in the field. This issue has arisen predominantly as a result of the relative paucity of field monitoring data from waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs) and the fact that laboratory test methods are not typically linked to specific field conditions; rather they are based on generic standardised methods and designed primarily to simulate accelerated weathering conditions that do not relate to field conditions in a linear manner.To address these specific issues the authors have in the last two years made significant progress in the development and deployment of advanced field monitoring equipment within numerous WRSFs. O’Kane Consultants (OKC) has previously reported the findings from data collected from these monitoring installations in a number of papers presented throughout 2013–2014. This valuable site data has subsequently been used by OKC as the basis to design and engineer advanced customisable site-specific kinetic leach columns at OKC’s geochemistry research laboratory. These columns represent an important advancement in kinetic column assessment methodology as they have been designed to replicate the field internal conditions within waste facilities.Key features of the columns include their capacity, size and technical specifications; including fully programmable solenoid-controlled air supply with variable flow and pressure control and in-line heating option, automated temperature control and monitoring, automated oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production monitoring, and soil moisture/matric suction monitoring.This flexibility of the design not only allows for more accurate field-based assessment of pyrite oxidation rates (POR) but also assessment of the potential effectiveness of waste management options such as deposition within a reduced oxygen environment, for example, as simulations of reduced net percolation rates or oxygen ingress rates can be accommodated.CITATION:Pearce, S, Pearce, J and Barteaux, M, 2015. For many years explosive sensitized explosives were assessed using the ballistic mortar. The standard test used lOg of explo- sive initiated with a detonator. Over the past 30 years many non- explosive sensitized explosives and blasting agents have been developed. Most of these new explosives and blasting agents cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar as they are not initiated by a detonator. It is also known that all explosives have a criti- cal diameter. When the cartridge diameter is less than the criti- cal diameter a stable detonation cannot be produced and the explosive fails to propagate. For many blasting agents the criti- cal diameters are greater than 50mm and such large diameters cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar. The underwater test allows explosives to be tested in diameters greater than the critical diameter and to be adequately initiated with suitable boosters. The effects of the explosive on the water are easy to measure and the test provides a safe, convenient and reproducible means of assessing explosive performance. The reaction products are allowed to expand to a low final pressure. The underwater test can therefore be used to give a measure of the total expansion work of explosives. The detonation of an explosive induces a shock wave in the surrounding water. The profile of the shock wave can be meas- ured 3-6m from the charge and the energy in the shock wave cal- culated. Measurements over a range of distances show that the shock wave is attenuated as it travels through the water and the attenuation is different for each explosive. This makes it difficult to estimate the energy dissipated in the water between the charge and a single gauge. The reaction products continue to expand and displace water. The bubble continues to expand until the kinetic energy of the water is zero. The gas pressure in the bubble is now lower than the hydrostatic pressure and the bubble radius is a maximum. The higher external hyrdostatic pressure causes the bubble to implode. The bubble energy is the work done displacing the maxi- mum bubble volume against the hydrostatic pressure and can befound from the bubble period. It is not always easy to find a large enough pond for the bubble to expand undisturbed by the water surface and the containing boundaries. This makes it difficult to determine the bubble energy accurately in shallow Ponds.

A case study of a landslide, which threatened vital infrastructure essential for the continuous operation of the Ok Tedi copper mine is presented. The paper presents a detailed description of the land- slide, outlines the assets at risk, and how the issue was addressed. This included the consideration of remedial options and the im- plementation of the most economically sound and geotechnically feasible remedial design which was completed within budget and on schedule. The paper is intended to highlight the responsibility of a mine based Geotechnical Engineering section in providing essential geotechnical investigations, design and professional advice on addressing stability issues in the infrastructure region.

In a time of changing rainfall patterns and in the light of recent tailings dam failures, there is closer environmental scrutiny for proposed tailings dam construction or expansion. Therefore the elimination of the traditional tailings dam could provide both environmental and cost benefits to an operation. One method to dewater tails is using pressure filtration to achieve lower moistures than what is currently available using other dewatering technologies. Further benefits include a higher rate of filtrate recovery, reuse of waste material and the potential for dry stacking of the filtered tailings cake, thereby minimising both risk and cost. This paper chronicles the replacement of two existing belt filter presses with a single McLanahan recessed plate filter press to dewater a tailings stream at a Bacchus Marsh site. It covers the slurry testing, equipment selection, installation, commissioning and operation of the filter press to achieve the following objectives:• removing the current tailings dam and slimes cells from the existing process to minimise failure risk and reduce the cost of a dam upgrade, as well as operational and maintenance costs• free up the surface area which was previously occupied by tailings dams and slimes cells• recover additional water to be returned to the process• reduce flocculent usage• reduce truck movements and handling.The project’s owner also expects to reduce carbon emissions by over 3000 t over the lifetime of operation as well as substantially reducing operating expenditure. By recognising the carbon reduction benefits, the project owner was able to successfully achieve partial funding through the Voluntary Waste Industry Protocol.An unanticipated, but as yet unquantifiable, bonus for the project was to seek an offtake agreement for the tailings thereby allowing the tailings to be considered a valuable source of beneficiated clay suitable for the construction industry.CITATION:Godwin, P and Williams, R, 2017. This paper reviews the geochemistry of weathered nickeliferous sulphidic and lateritic profiles, the supergene behaviour of nickel and ore-associated elements, and their implications for exploration in an attempt to distinguish between barren and mineralised nickeliferous profiles. Nickel is an abundant accessory element in ultramafic rocks with background concentrations in some units up to 0.25 weight per cent. Ore-grades in fresh rock are mostly associated with massive and disseminated sulphide zones within magnesium-rich layered ultramafic sequences. In lateritic weathered terrain, nickel is also concentrated in the regolith profile. This process not only upgrades nickel in the gossanous weathered product of sulphidic deposits, but for sub-economic sulphide zones and some ultramafic rocks, is sufficient to result in a supergene resource. Ore-grade accumulations of nickel in regolith after sulphide-poor ultramafic rocks are referred to as lateritic deposits. Nickel sulphide zones and their ferruginous weathering products are collectively referred to as sulphidic deposits and are the major source of nickel in Western Australia. Mineral exploration in the Yilgam Block is hampered by deep lateritic weathered profiles (eg Butt and Sheppy, 1975; Smith, 1977; 1982). During the nickel boom of 1967 - 1972, most discoveries resulted from the location of outcropping nickeliferous gossan and ironstone. Exposed ultramafic terrain with nickel sulphide potential were explored intensively, mostly by gossan and soil sampling. However, up to 85 per cent of the area of the Yilgarn Block is buried by transported regolith. In these covered areas, barren and mineralised rock responses at the surface are similar and soil sampling produced unreliable results due to many false anomalies. A statistical, multi-element approach to regional geochemical exploration has evolved. Potential trace element indicators investigated, include Co, Cr, Cu, Ir, Mn, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sc, Se, and Zn. In recent years, trace element ratios have also been tested with varying degrees of Success.

"Many open pit (OP) mines with considerable vertical extent are approaching the end of their life-of-mine; some of them are seeking the opportunity to make the transition from OP to underground (UG) mining. The decision on the best location for transition from OP to UG mining should be addressed at the strategic mine planning stage. Conservatively, the transition to UG mining is considered near or after the exhaustion of the reserve within the ultimate pit.However, if UG is evident and exclusively viable from the inception, defining the best location for the transition through a conservative approach may not be an optimal option to explore. This clearly establishes the need for a mathematical model that aims to maximise the project value and considers OP and UG mining with crown pillar (CP) requirement simultaneously. Underground mine layout varies from one UG mining method to the other, and consequently the variation in the location of transition is eminent. Thus, focus on the selection of UG mining method must be a part of this analysisThis paper presents an implementation of an integer programming (IP) based mathematical model that evaluates the changes in mining layout and the project value under possible variation in the transition point from OP to UG mining for stoping and block caving methods. An IP problem is a mathematical optimisation or feasibility method in which some or all of the variables are restricted to be integers. The outcome of the implementation reflects that mining strategies with OP transition to stoping and block caving methods generated higher values than OP-only mining strategy. The case study not only demonstrates the difference in mining layout for both stoping method and block caving method, but also reflects that a joint consideration of OP mining, UG mining and CP placement helps to achieve maximum project value and resource utilisation.Citation:Darbritz, J, 2016. Although mining, particularly of gold and coal, played a significant role in the development of New Zealand, from the time of the spectacular gold rushes of the 1860s its economic importance to the country as a whole has decreased substantially since that time. Gold, coal and non-metallic agricultural and industrial minerals have been found in economically significant quantities, however, the search for base metals has not been successful.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. Rajasthan of western India blessed with rich base metal and phosphorite deposits. The biogeochemical and geobotanical methods of mineral exploration are greatly used in parts of Rajasthan Zawar, Khetri and Ambaj multi-metal project Gujarat and Jhamarkotra phosphorite deposit. These principles are exclusively based on certain assumptions about the anomalous chemical composition in plants and distribution and migration of indicator elements. Biogeochemical studies for lead zinc deposit of Zawar group of mines were carried out to locate the probable accumulators which could help in prospecting for these metals. The important roots of Impatiens balsamia plants contain 735 mg. of cadmium and crotolaria linifolia 603 mg., melhania futteyporensis 626 mg. lindenbergia muraria 443, celosiu argentia 360 mg. In the Khetri copper belt the vegetation is scanty and the species includes Acacia arabica, zyzypus jujuba and cactus euphorbia.

When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

One of the main tools used by mining operations to mitigate the risk of rock burst is the installation of a so-called ædynamic resistantÆ support system. Such systems are designed to absorb the impact of shockwaves created by mine-induced seismic events. Dynamic support must be strong and capable of sustaining high loads and, at the same time, they have to be flexible and accommodate large deformation. A dynamic support system is therefore a system capable of absorbing a high quantity of energy. Ground support systems are composed of rock reinforcement (rock bolts or cable bolts) and surface support (mesh or shotcrete). In terms of surface support, fibre-reinforced shotcrete is increasingly seen as the industry preferred solution when difficult ground conditions are experienced, including areas of high seismic hazard. A thick layer of shotcrete is certainly strong but it is by no means flexible. Normal weld-mesh has some flexibility, but it is not very strong. The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), in collaboration with Onesteel Reinforcing Pty Ltd, is currently working on a new high-energy absorption mesh that combines strength and flexibility. The new mesh can be installed with a jumbo, in a similar way as the widely used sheet of weld-mesh. This paper describes the development of this new mesh system.

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The Pemali Open Pit Mine is situated in a small island called Bangka in Indonesia. It produces approximately 165,000 m3/year of tin ore with an average grade of 3.67 kg/m' of tin from a primary deposit. The deposit occurs at the rim of a granitoid intrusion within sedimentary beds. The rock formations, all extremely weathered, and the overlying alluvium, are exposed to a rainfall exceeding 3m/year. Serious slope stability problems are experienced at the mine, despite using overall pit slopes of 20¦-29¦, the latter resulting in a stripping ratio of 4:1. This paper outlines a computer based back analysis of a major slope failure involving some 250,000 m' of material which occurred on the west wall of the pit in February, 1984. The findings from the analysis, together with other information, are used to examine the stability of the east wall of the pit, where tension cracks developed later. The results indicate that the large influx of water was the most significant cause of such slope stability problems and a more intensified water management programme would be beneficial.

In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. As a result of such an assessment, the proposed pile sleeving level was approved by TfNSW, thus offering an economical foundation solution for the project.CITATION:Azad, F M, Oliveira, D A F and Wong, P K, 2014. The maximum gas emission into underground workings can be predicted by the use of established methods which have world wide recognition. Changes in gas emission and the influence of the gas and geological environments during longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, were found.to be a typical. The relationship between longwall mining and gassy conditions is found to vary from the European experience because of the different mining and geological conditions encountered, and the higher productivity achieved, by single longwall panels in Australia.
