"The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. In most mining operations the ore undergoes several processes such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and liberation to become the final salable product. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and itÆs results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. The value created per ton of broken ore is the difference between the price it commands when sold as the final product and the cost to produce it. Traditionally, the total process in the mining industry is classified into two groups as mining and milling. These are managed as separate cost centres inspite of the interdependency. Each process has a budget and production target and emphasis is usually on maximising production (tons) and minimising cost rather than the overall profitability of the whole business unit. The efficiency of each process is considered to be satisfactory as long as they are within budget and meet the production targets. The mine and mill managers usually try to optimise each process independently rather than the entire process. This paper discusses the potential pitfalls of decreasing the drilling and blasting cost per ton of broken rock without considering its impact on downstream processes. It introduces a holistic approach to blast optimisation by identifying and measuring the leverage that blast results have on different downstream processes and then optimising the blast design to achieve the results that maximise the overall profitability rather than just minimising the drilling and blasting costs. This paper demonstrates the benefits of such a holistic approach to blasting based on computer model simulations and field studies from metal and open cut coal mining.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

For low density materials such as coal, density-based fractionation of particles via the sink-float method is relatively simple due to the availability of liquids of suitable density; however, for high density minerals, suitable heavy liquids are less available and those that are available are expensive and pose significant hazards. At best, sink-float separation can be performed up to densities of 4400 kg/m3 with the use of Clerici’s solution at elevated temperatures. Hence the direct measurement of grade-recovery and density-partition curves is problematic. Therefore, in most cases, beneficiation plants must rely on methods such as QEMSCAN, density tracer particles or very limited information to guide them in the design and optimisation of their plants.This paper describes a density-fractionation method utilising laminar flow through a system of parallel inclined channels to generate a series of overflow fractions at different flow velocities. Here the particles are subject to precise hydrodynamic forces with minimal dispersion or mixing. The size distribution of each overflow fraction at a given flow velocity is obtained using a laser particle size analyser, and combined with a laminar flow model to deduce the corresponding density distribution. The paper describes the application of the method to measure the separation achieved using a REFLUX Classifier to obtain the corresponding feed, product and reject ‘washability curves’, and in turn the full partition surface. Permian ultramafic and associated rocks form a belt in East Nelson and contain widespread, but minor, chromite and copper mineralisation and some mining was carried out last century. Since mining ceased, about 1910, little mapping of the belt has been carried out although its origin has been debated vigorously. Recently it has been inferred to form part of a ophiolite sequence, which has been tectonically disrupted to form a melange, and several 'plate -tectonic' models have been proposed. Mapping in the central part of the belt has shown that mTlanges are to the east of the ophiolite sequence. Faulting is widespread so that in anyone section part of the sequence may be absent. Some of the faulting is difficult to recognise and probably took place during or soon after the sequence accumulated. Other faulting is clearly of Cenozoic age and includes major NNE striking faults, with large horizontal displacement, and approximately east-west striking faults with almost entirely vertical movement. The writer agrees that 'plate tectonics' could provide an acceptable explanation for the origin of the ophiolite sequence but the models so far proposed do not take into account the nature and field relationships of the rock units present. Copper Mineralisation is largely controlled by the younger faults, particularly those striking about north-east, and is largely confined to the western part of the ultramafic rocks particularly where slivers of the volcanics of the adjacent Lee River Group are enclosed. Mineralisation, along NNE striking shear zones, has recently been found in the volcanics some distance from the ultramafic rocks. The chromite mineralization is in the form of primary layering in the basal part of the ultramafic belt although in places it has been concentrated into lenses probably during serpentinisation.

The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

This paper examines the properties of Australian indigenous crude oil and the changes to Australian refinery process- ing required after the Gippsland crude finds in the late '60s. In addition the paper details the dif- ferent crudes available to Australian ref ineries and the relative product yields in relation to Australian crudes. Market demand for petroleum products both now and in the future is then related to the products yields. The paper also examines the impact of the OPEC induced crude price spiral and the subsequent changes in refinery engineering, current and projected market demands, and energy conservation measures both inside and outside the industry.

Modelling of industrial coal flotation based on data collected in several Central Queensland flotation plants and supplemented by laboratory data is discussed. The model is kinetic in form and provides the basis of an automatic control system. The important features of the model are, 1. a distribution of flotation rates for each species of particles corresponding to the range of particle sizes, 2. a physical restriction on the removal rate of solids in cells where froth 'overloading' occurs. In this condition the removal rate of solids is proportional to the removal rate of water, 3. enhanced particle floatability due to increasing collector addition where froth overloading does not occur, 4. a second mechanism of recovery of all particles by mechanical associ- ation with water. This mechanism is particularly important in the recovery of fine high-ash species.

This paper gives a brief description of VirtuoBlast technology ù a new, automated and highly interactive stereo vision technology which has been developed in CSIRO Exploration and Mining. VirtuoBlast technology is an integration of three advanced technologies - close-range digital terrestrial photogrammetry, oblique stereo imaging or high-speed stereo imaging, and temporal-spatial image matching technique. VirtuoBlast has been developed for the automated 3D measurement of blasting through rapid collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of 3D data related to blasting. A major field trial has been undertaken in August 1998 at the KCGM super pit. The field trial involved three applications of the technology, namely, pre-blast 3D surface mapping; post-blast 3D performance measurement; and temporal-spatial modelling of dynamic blasting process. This paper presents some results from this trial with emphasis on the application of VirtuoBlast technology to pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement. Application to the temporal-spatial 3D modelling of dynamic blasting process will be presented in a separate paper. Pre- and post-blast surface models derived using both VirtuoBlast technology and conventional field survey method are presented. The differences in results using the two mapping methods clearly show that the digital photogrammetric technique has many advantages over conventional survey methods. Results of pre- and post-blast from the field trial have demonstrated the potential of VirtuoBlast technology to efficiently perform pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement of production blasts. Demonstrated applications of VirtuoBlast technology to automated 3D measurement of blasting are showing an exciting future in advancing blasting science and modern blast design. The basic technologies are in place, however, continued improvements to the functionality, robustness and outputs are needed. The challenge is to build on the current state-of-the-art, by developing techniques and hardware which can be easily transferred to and implemented by the mining community. Current and future research and development will see improvements in imaging systems, automatic image processing and 3D data analysis.

Occupational exposure limits for diesel particular matter (DPM) are progressively being adopted in a number of countries. Many of these follow the lead of the US Mine Safety and Health Administration initiated in 2008. In line with adoption of best practice it is accepted that all exposures should be reduced to as low as reasonably achievable. The management of diesel emissions and occupational exposures to those emissions requires an integrated strategy incorporating efforts from all key departments on a mine, including management, production, maintenance, supply and occupational health and safety.Australian coalmine longwall moves rely on the use of high-powered diesel equipment such as chariots and other machines that produce exhaust pollutants of gases and DPM. To reduce mine personnel’s exposure levels to DPM a hierarchy of controls can be followed. Minimising the use of diesel equipment, better operator positioning in relation to exposure source, using efficient engineering methods and adopting better ventilation to reduce concentrations through dilution are some of the controls that can eliminate exposures. Approaches generally adopted in Australian longwall mines currently rely on a combination of strategies such as optimisation of ventilation, use of diesel particulate filters and use of diesel tag boards that minimise the number of vehicles through recording entry and exit into working panels.A study has been undertaken into the mine ventilation systems currently in use during longwall moves within Australian modern longwall extraction mines. This paper reviews current longwall section ventilation systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex problems in dealing with section DPM during phases of the operational moves. The effects of DPM on crew members as well as the diesel equipment operators within a longwall section are examined. Reduced intrusion-related gold deposits have become a new, low-grade, large-tonnage exploration target during the last decade. The best recognized examples of such deposits are recognized throughout the Tintina Gold Province of the northern North American Cordillera. Because such examples may have many features in common with orogenic gold deposits, such as anomalous Bi, W and Te, low salinity and CO2-rich ore fluids, and a spatial/temporal association with igneous rocks, confusion and controversy have now become commonplace in classification of many gold deposits formed along convergent margins. The best discriminators of IRGS are likely to be their: +        regional location in deformed shelf sequences on the inboard side of a series of accreted terranes and within terranes that also contain important tin and (or) tungsten deposits; +        local spatial association of gold ores with cupolas and contact aureoles of relatively reduced, alkaline-leaning, and volatile-rich plutons; +        post-deformational timing of gold deposition; +        extremely low sulfide content (commonly <1 vol %) of ores within igneous bodies and the outward zoning, through proximal skarns and to distal base metal-rich veins, from the causative pluton; and +        low grades (<1 g/t Au) of auriferous sheeted vein systems in pluton cupolas.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. Sampling protocols and metallurgical flow sheets should be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. In support, the a priori need for evaluation programs is the characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical processes employed. Within the coarse- to-fi ne gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated particles, through to difficult for coarse gold mineralisation. Conversely, metallurgical processing may be relatively simple for coarse gold ore and more difficult for very fi ne gold ores. Most deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The nature of mineralisation, mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by preliminary sampling to facilitate testing. Mineralogical studies, focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required as part of wider paragenetic and geometallurgical investigations. This paper discusses key issues and presents a methodology for the determination of gold particle size in coarse gravity-gold ores to support sampling optimisation and which also contributes to metallurgical characterisation.

The choice of the best-fit broker or banker is of great importance, and in the case of the miner, this is a house that has an intimate understanding of the mining industry, particularly one that has a solid staff complement of personnel with operating mine experience at a senior level. The most important document that the company will present to support its financing request will be the Feasibility Study. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. Rothschild Australia Limited assists its client companies by supplying a detailed framework so that they will be in a position give the bank the information it needs to complete its technical `due diligence' study within a mutually agreed time. Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018.
