The direction taken by mineral processing in the next 20 years will be determined by sharing of Australia's resources to fill world needs; by the low energy costs in Australia; by environmental considerations; and by Re- search and Development contributions. Examples of the interplay of these factors are given by consideration of eight minerals.

The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

Semi-confined, trachy-andesite sills which overlie the German Creek Seam, within the critical tensile strain zone, form major groundwater hazards to longwall mining at the German Creek underground mines. The water contained in these aquifers is normally neutral, but highly saline. Techniques used to detect aquifers include routine air-lift pumping in exploratory drill holes, downhole geophysical and geological logging and upstage packer testing. Hydraulic constants are calculated from pump-out and pump-in test results. Hydraulic parameters for the calculation of mine inflow rates are determined from pump-out test results because these tests appear to be more representative of aquifer drainage during goat dewatering than pump- in testing. During mining of the first longwall block at Central Colliery, caving fractures intersected overlying aquifers after the longwall had retreated 40m, and mine water inflow rate rapidly increased from less than one litre/sec to 25 litres/sec. The amount of water pumped out of the mine during first panel extraction was 140 megalitres with drawdown occurring over an area of 168 hectares. In the Southern Colliery area approximately 324 megalitres of highly saline water which is actively stored in the Aquila Sill area will be pre-drained from six well points prior to longwall mining. With effective pre-drainage from surface drill holes, maximum inflow rate into the mine during initial goafing can be reduced from 165 litres/sec to about 45 litres/sec.

Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.

"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. This ultimate limit is explored through time utilisation models, which were also developed for use in feasibility studies and mining contract modelling.Citation:Miller, B H and Price, R, 2016. For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body. There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

This paper is essentially an address, rather than a detailed presentation of facts, because the third edition of `Nuclear Electricity - An Australian Perspective' has just been completed and will be available for the seminar. That 96-page booklet contains a lot more information than The AusIMM would be prepared to print in the seminar proceedings. Hence I have kept this paper brief, and ask readers to obtain a (free) copy of Nuclear Electricity at the seminar or from The AusIMM. It can be read as a supplement to the paper (or vice versa). According to one of Australia's well known critics of nuclear power, Professor Ian Lowe, `the pro-nuclear lobby's predictions of the future use of nuclear energy .... have been regularly and consistently wrong by large amounts, always overestimating the future demand for uranium" (Aust. Society, April 1989). While I do not accept this as a bald statement applying to all those in favour of increased use of nuclear power, there is sufficient truth in it for it to be credible. Certainly in the 1950s and the 1960s, when the new technology for producing controlled power from atomic fission was first being commercialised, there were some very exaggerated projections of the role of nuclear power. Many people thought that it would take over from fossil fuel fired electricity generation in much the same way as the motor vehicle took over from horse-drawn transport. And these early projections were not simply concerned with electric power generation, they included excavating harbours and digging canals with nuclear explosives.

The Gippsland Basin in south-eastern Australia has an area of approximately 46 000 sq km. It is one of the world's major coal and petroleum bearing basins, with most of the former occurring in the smaller one fifth on-shore part. The stratigraphy, structure and economic resources of the Tertiary sedimentary pile is now well known through extensive drilling for coal and petroleum. In contrast, the older Cretaceous sequences through their lesser economic importance are relatively less explored. The sedimentational history of the Gippsland Basin has largely followed along similar lines of development to the many other southern Australian basins since the Cretaceous break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the scale of accumulation of coal and hydrocarbon source rocks is unprecedented and differentiates this basin, for reasons less well understood, from the others. Large scale open cut brown coal mining since the late-1920s has been carried out in the western extremities of the basin, while vigorous extraction of some two thirds of Australian petroleum products taken place in the offshore part. Brown coal seam thicknesses and economically winnable reserves are huge and outrank most other brown coal basins of the world. Development of the resource currently meets the need for electricity generation throughout the State of Victoria, but other future developments such as conversion to oil, being investigated.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Over the last two years work has been undertaken within the Pasminco Metals - BHAS Zinc Plant to improve the efficiency and maintain the production capacity of the operation. The work has centred upon the installation of suitable process instrumentation to improve process control and the development of new unit operations to maintain control of the circuit water and sulphate balance. A key aspect of the new process instrumentation has been the development of an on-line analyser to monitor the total antimony concentration during zinc dust purification. As a result of changes made to the Zinc Plant in order to contain all effluent within the circuit, a problem developed with control of both the water and sulphate balance of the circuit. A new neutralisation plant to treat all cell house waste water so that it can be contained within the circuit has been developed and installed. In addition changes have been made to the existing circuit to control deliberately the circuit sulphate concentration by precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosite.

A panel cave using LHDs for ore extraction came into production at Premier in 1990 at a depth of 630 metres below surface on the western side of the mine in the BA5 mining block. A post-undercut mining sequence was used with all development on both the undercut and production levels completed prior to the undercut being advanced over the pre-developed drawbells. Support and rock mass damage on the production level was extensive as the undercut moved overhead. Undercutting and coarse fragmentation created problems. The mining sequence was changed to an advance undercut with the minimum of development and support undertaken on the production level prior to the undercut moving overhead. Only once the abutment stresses had stabilised were drawbells developed and final support installed. The height of the undercut drill design was decreased from 18 to 13 metres. The changes resulted in markedly less rock mass and support damage on the production level. Lessons learned in the BA5 mining block on the 630 level were incorporated into planning and scheduling the BB1E mining block which came into production on the 732 metre level on the eastern side of the mine in 1996. An advance undercut mining sequence was planned, undercut height was minimised and undercutting parameters were optimised in terms of the BA5 experience. Numerous problems still occurred. As the undercut area increased in size severe spalling from the cave back resulted in vertical propagation of the cave to a height of 30 metres instead of the planned 13 metres. The resultant coarse fragmentation created secondary blasting problems and an excess of undercut ore that had to be loaded and trammed, slowed the rate of undercut advance. The planned mining sequence was compromised and considerable support and rock mass damage resulted on the production level below. Once these problems had been overcome the undercut advanced at the planned rate and continuous caving initiated at the predicted hydraulic radius. At a later stage the unexpected ingress of water hampered undercut drilling and slowed the rate of undercut advance in a section of the cave. Leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and the overall face shape could not be developed as planned. The rate of natural horizontal cave propagation exceeded the rate of undercut advance and three undercut drilling tunnels were extensively damaged. More tunnel development on the production level prior to undercutting than was planned resulted. The slow advance of the undercut and high abutment stresses caused extensive damage to installed support and the rock mass on the production level, 15 metres below. Experience in the BB1E mining block on the 732 metre level has taught that an advance undercut mining sequence reduces damage on the production level markedly. Extremely tight control on the rate of undercut advance, leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and overall undercut face shape as well as extraction ratio, tunnel development and support sequence on the production level below is required. Premier Mine plans to implement a block cave at a depth in excess of 1000 metres within the next decade. All the experience gained on current mining levels together with data collection and numerical modeling is being used to plan the proposed mining operation. The geotechnical challenge of mining at this depth in weak rock has been identified as the greatest risk to the project. Challenges centre around adopting the correct mining sequence, limiting the extent of rock mass damage associated with undercutting and effective support. The hydraulic radius needed to initiate caving, fragmentation, drawpoint spacing, secondary blasting and the possibility of seismicity are geotechnical concerns that are being addressed. Results to-date suggest that a pre-undercut mining sequence with all development and support on the production level carried out only after the undercut abutment stresses have passed overhead will have to be implemented.

One of primary causes of poor blast performance is the improper relief of explosive energy. Under or over-confined blasts modify the explosiveÆs path of least resistance, which changes where and when the explosive energy is applied resulting in less than optimum blast performance. During the research for this paper the overbreak characteristics of five full-scale blasts were quantified using high speed cinematography and borehole cameras. The effectiveness of various overbreak control methods was also evaluated to guide design refinement. The results of this research along with general recommendations for reducing excessive damage are included with this paper.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. Major exploration companies can have a problem with what to do with small precious metal ore bodies located through exploration programmes. Low tonnage, but high grade, ore bodies too small to justify in-house development.1.2 Ban Ban Mining is a Sunshine Coast based partnership with considerable expertise in mining and earthmoving which specializes in the mining of small/medium size ore bodies on behalf of the tenement holder on a profit sharing or royalty basis.1.3 The partnership's first successful venture has been the mining and vat leaching of a small 40,000 tonne ore body with a head grade of 5 gm/tonne gold and 32 gms/tonne silver, situated near Ban Ban Springs in southeast Queensland.1.4 This paper looks at the low cost vat leaching method of treatment, as an alternative to CIP and CIL in the processing of low tonnage/high grade precious metal ore bodies.

Thiosulphate is an attractive alternative reagent to cyanide for processing gold ores. It is relatively cheap and non-toxic, forms relatively strong gold and silver complexes, and readily leaches gold ores in ammoniacal solutions, catalysed by Cu(II). It is particularly suited to carbonaceous ores where the recovery of gold by cyanide is poor. However research over the past 20 years has identified a number of issues and impediments that must be understood or overcome before an overall process can be demonstrated as practical and economic for typical oxidised gold ores. This paper reviews our current understanding of thiosulphate chemistry and mechanism of gold dissolution, and discusses the stability of thiosulphate and polythionates. It then reviews the results of leaching various gold ores that have been reported in the literature, discusses gold recovery options, and considers environmental and toxicity issues. Some of the issues that require further research include decreasing the oxidation of thiosulphate by Cu(II) or other oxidants, increasing the extraction of gold compared to cyanide, and understanding the variation in gold recovery between ores. More work is also required to minimise the effect of polythionates on gold recovery using resins or alternative absorbents, to improve the elution of copper and gold from resins, and to recycle or minimise the concentration of reagents.

The accounting profession in Australia and overseas has taken up the responsibility of setting standards specifically relating to the minerals and energy industries. Australia led the way with AAS7 Accounting for the Extractive Industries. This statement was issued in 1976 and amended 1977..It largely deals with accounting for preproduction expenditure and uses the term "economically recoverable reserves". It does not require disclosure of reserve quantities or values in balance sheets or as supplementary information in financial statements. The United States accounting profession in 1982 finally resolved an accounting standard in the same area as AAS7-SFAS69 Disclosures About Oil and Gas Producing Activities. It applies only to oil and gas producers, but has extensive disclosure requirements, including proved oil and gas reserve quantities. Current developments indicate that Great Britain is about to follow the US example. At this time in Australia, AAS7 or some other statement relating to the extractive industries has not been issued as an approved accounting standard by the ASRB. Standards issued by the ASRB are binding in law.

The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.
