The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid-Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian-Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

The treatment of beach sands in'' the Bunbury/Capel' area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in'J7estern Australia. Nevertheless since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced. The increasing world recognition of W.A. as a major' Iiroducer of ilmenite is due primarily ' to its low chromic oxide. ; (Cr203 content,, 0,03% to 0.04%, combined with a medium to high grade TiO2 content, 54% - 6 , supported by large reserves, a'. stable government with close access to good shipping facilities.. Ilmenite is produced from-these deposits at low-costs, enabling the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from.major markets.

The criteria developed for the Argyle Diamond Mine process plant control system are reviewed. The control system installed is described along with a discussion of the method of implementation adopted. The control system was extensively tested prior to instal- lation at site. This approach led to signi- ficant time savings during plant commissioning and facilitated rapid escalation of plant production. The control system has performed satisfactorily with a high level of operator acceptance and basically satisfies the criteria Developed.

The desorption of gold from activated carbon is promoted by adding organic solvents to aqueous cyanide solutions. At 65-80¦ the elution of gold is fast and is not affected by water quality. Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

Dewatering tailing slurries by mechanical means is often not possible and gravity and solar driven processes must be used. It has been shown previously that better use of gravity is achieved when the tailing is drained as it settles. Not only are more compact sediments obtained but also the dewatering is faster. From the results of laboratory and field tests reported here, equations were established which describe the evaporation and drainage components of the dewatering. These equations were used to calculate the effects of ponding depth, solids content of the tailing and clim- atic conditions on the time required to dewater the tailing. Since the calculations can be made with and without the drainage component, the advantages to be gained with drainage can be determined. The tailing used in the work was a clay slime from a sand washing operation. However, it is anticipated that this approach will be applicable to other similar tailing.

According to the literature, material transportation represents 50 per cent of the operating costs for an open pit mine. In this context, this paper proposes a multistage approach for dynamic truck dispatching in real open pit mine environments, implemented in the commercial package SmartMine®, marketed by Devex SA. The first stage of this approach defines the optimal number of trucks that maximises the tonnage production by means of a robust linear programming model, which considers the operational constraints of a real mining process. The second stage uses a dynamic dispatching heuristic joining computational simulation and multicriterion optimisation techniques for decision making for truck dispatching. Another relevant contribution of this work is the publication of realistic instances collected from a dispatching system managing an iron mine, containing information about the hauling and loading fleet, the equipment situation when the working shift starts, cycle times, the time line of special occurrences (such as equipment stoppages and loading equipment reallocation in order to satisfy the mine planning) and the tonnage produced. These instances were generated with the purpose of submitting the method to the test of a real situation that considers the uncertainties existing in the process studied. The proposed approach was validated by means of a discrete event simulation model applied to the previously designated instances. Using this multistage approach as a mechanism for dispatch decision making, it is shown that the haulage fleet productivity increased when compared with the real values reported from the instances. These results are important because they show that the proposed approach generates efficient dispatch decisions for trucks operating in a real environment, reducing operating costs, increasing production and making the mine more competitive.

At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

When Centaur Mining and Exploration produced nickel metal fromlaterite ore at its Cawse nickel project in January 1999, a new era in the nickel industry was heralded in. One of three new laterite projects commissioned that year, new technology and a unique process design has been combined at Cawse to launch what will be amongst the worldÆs cheapest nickel production. However, the road to success has proven to be long and challenging. Microseismic monitoring is regularly used in the mining and geotechnical industries to provide detailed information about rock mass response to operational activities. This paper implements a variable 3D velocity model (VM) at a North American hard rock mine with the aim of further improving the accuracy of seismic event locations. A collapsing method is also used to help analyse two individual seismic event clusters at another North American hard rock mine. In the first case study, the location accuracy of events is shown to improve by moving from a conventional single VM to a variable 3D VM that accounts for voids and different geological domains. The modal average for the event location accuracy improved from 14 m to 5 m when the 3D VM was used. Additionally, the single VM failed to locate 26 per cent of the seismic events that were located by the 3D VM. In the second case study, the distribution of seismic events was further enhanced by using a collapsing method that highlighted planar structures. The collapsing method was performed on two large event sequences that occurred in close proximity and identified different seismic event distributions. One aftershock sequence aligned along a plane, suggesting an activated structure, while the other large event sequence had a more 3D distribution of events, suggesting a complex stress redistribution on smaller structures.CITATION:Pinnock, I, Collins, D S, Toya, Y and Hosseini, Z, 2016. The importance of good winding rope practice is stressed. Details of the ropes used for various duties in the four shafts of The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) are given. Inspection, testing (including non destructive methods), maintenance and rope discard criteria are discussed. There are sane catments about rope installation methods and an appendix is included which outlines the appropriate statutory requirements for winding ropes in New South Wales (NSW).

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. An example is given where this database is used for managing atmospheric data collected at an underground coalmine operation in the US. Atlas Iron Limited’s (Atlas) Abydos Mine has developed its Scarborough open pit proximal to a rock shelter that has been assessed as a significant Aboriginal heritage site by the Traditional Owners of the land. The rock shelter, named Yurlu Kankala, is located to the north-west of the pit with a stand-off distance of 35 m. Within Atlas’ Native Title Agreement with the Traditional Owners, and approvals from the Western Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs, commitments have been made to conduct mining in a way that avoids or at least minimises disturbance and damage to the rock shelter. This complies with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA) and respects the heritage and culture of the Traditional Owners.CITATION:Bow, B G and Jiang, J J, 2018. On the face of it this is an easily answered question. Modern technology and life as we know it today would be impossible without industrial minerals and the responsible utilisation of mineral resources is essential for the economic wellbeing of the nation. The quarrying industry supplies a high percentage of the industrial minerals used in New Zealand and our role therefore, is to ensure a constant supply of high quality roading and concrete aggregates so that society and the community as a whole can develop. We must do this in a manner which causes the least possible disruption to members of the community, which efficiently utilises all the valuable resources, which causes as little pollution as possible and last but by no means least, creates realistic profit for the operator. It is only by achieving a reasonable profit that we are able to continue in business and therefore play our part in the development of the country. Unfortunately, quarries have a poor image and are not generally popular, as on the whole, they are noisy, dirty and dusty and attract large trucks which create traffic problems. Judging by the amount of restrictive legislation with which we have to comply today, not even government or the local authorities want quarries which presents the industry with some serious problems, some of which will be outlined in this paper.

In late-1998 the steel plant SALDANHA was started up successfully. This integrated compact mill is using the COREX«-technology as hot metal and a combined DR-plant as DRI production unit. As an extension to investigations into methods of upgrading the Iitania content of ilmenite concentrate from beach sands using 100 g/day, a small pilot plant treating 23 kg/ day of ilmenite was used.In the pilot plant the iron oxide in the ilmenite was reduced to iron at 1200°C using carbon (coal/char) without melting the material, using a tunnel kiln heating cycle, the charges contained in saggars, The iron was then separated from the titania fraction by ball milling, wet magnetic separation, and screening. The resulting magnetic product was high in iron (about 80 per cent Fe) and the non-magnetic product high intitania (about 70 per cent TiO2).From this trial sufficient data were obtained to enable the preparation of a flow sheet for a plant producing 62,300 tonnes/year total products, and an estimate of costs to be made. This has shown that for an estimatedcapital expenditure of nearly $6,000,000 and annual production costs of about $4,000,000, the cost per tonne of high titania product (76 per cent TiO2) would be nearly $70.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. The Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded project, No C14057, entitled æEffect of Blasting on InfrastructureÆ, has been carried out with the objectives of providing methodologies for the assessment of the strength of infrastructure types and the establishment of responsible and realistic limits. Personnel from Melbourne, Newcastle and Swinburne Universities and Terrock Consulting Engineers conducted the project. Infrastructure types including: conveyors; power transmission towers; wooden power poles; electrical substations; pipelines, bridges; public access roads and underground workings have been investigated by both field studies and structural analysis. Railways, underground telecom cables, dams and industrial buildings have been reviewed using general structural analysis. This paper has been prepared for the mining industry to provide a progress report on the project.
