The Iron Prince orebody occurs within the Lower Middleback Jaspilite Horizon of the Middleback Group and consists of hematite within host rocks of jaspilites and schists. The ore was probably the product of leaching of silica from jaspilites and replacement by iron, concentrations occurring in suitable structural traps. The narrowness and the presence of extensive dolerite amphibolite dykes within the orebody make it essential to operate a grade control programme in advance of the faces. Information from drilling is drawn up on bench plans, step plans and impurity overlays, and these serve both in day to day production planning and in long term planning. Mining is done selectively by open-pit methods and blending conducted by keeping at least three faces of different grades of ore open at any one time. No stock piles of ore are kept for blending, but contact ore, contaminated ore and enriched material are dumped for later beneficiation.

Basic principles of stack injection are outlined and supported by calculations of thermal, chemical and aerodynamic requirements of an ideal 4000 tpd furnace. Calculated results show that these requirements vary with conversion of FeO, and that best performance may be expected with XFeO = 1.0 for which calculated production is 6919 tpd and coke rate is only 211 kg/thm. Calculations are also presented for a cycled injection. Discussions show that stack injection is a good way of overcoming softening problems and meeting the demand for iron in a fluctuating demand situation when it exceeds the maximum capacity of a furnace.

Pebble recycle crushing circuit performance at Telfer has historically fallen significantly short of the design product P80 of 12 mm. An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the current pebble crusher circuit performance, quantify the optimum performance achievable with the existing circuit and examine the impact of pebble crusher performance on the overall grinding circuit throughput. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop an operating strategy that could consistently deliver the finest possible pebble crusher product to maximise the overall plant throughput.The pebble crusher specific energy (Wc) was proposed as a key control variable for pebble crusher operation based on the results of plant survey work. Over the range of pebble crusher specific energies encountered at Telfer, a strong linear relationship was found to exist between Wc and the crusher product size. This direct linear relationship between specific energy and crusher product size remained constant regardless of how the change in specific energy was generated, ie through changes to the crusher closed side setting (CSS), feed rate, liner profile or moisture content. Key findings for the Telfer pebble crushing circuit were: each 0.1 kWh/t change in Wc resulted in a 4.9 per cent to 6.0 per cent change in plant throughput, each 1 mm change in pebble crusher CSS resulted in a 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent change in plant throughput, and 0.57 tonne of new feed was displaced for each tonne of crushed pebbles recycled to the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. The presence of an existing 3000 tonne pebble stockpile between the SAG mill and pebble crushers provides an opportunity to manipulate the feed rate to the pebble crushers independently of the SAG mill pebble production rate. This flexibility, along with excess pebble crushing capacity, enables the pebble crusher specific energy to be maximised the majority of the time. Pebble crusher specific energy has subsequently been incorporated as an online crusher control measure to assist in maximising plant throughput.

The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

In China, the State-run mines are currently practising an information card management system, to collect data about mine production and safety condition. Since large volumes of data will be obtained every day, efficiently and effectively processing data and sorting out valuable information will take enormous resources of manpower, if by hand. Therefore, an intelligent database system with easy data inputting was developed to assist information processors in data classifying, filing and retrieving. For analyzing and improving production performances, reliability models and production functions were embodied. The system was implemented on AST-286 in DBASE M. Preliminary applications have proved effective and successful.

Systematic near-field vibration monitoring of stope blasts was carried out in a large, deep underground mine. A total of 31 production blasts were studied in order to investigate the effectiveness of existing blast designs. This involved the vertical retreat mining method, which requires drilling a raise bore or blasting a slot raise (typically 1.22 m in diameter) using large diameter boreholes (165 mm). The diagnostic technique employed multistation near-field monitoring of blasts with high-g (100 g) and high-frequency (>10 kHz) triaxial accelerometers. The amplitude of the vibrations is correlated with the strain energy transmitted from each explosive deck. The results showed that more than 30 per cent of the explosive decks contributed little energy to the rock breakage process in these blasts, and an equal number contributed only inadequately. These findings are indicative of serious blast malfunctions. The problems can be traced to inadequate deck blast design and possibly to drill hole deviation. The various causes for such malfunctions are discussed and remedial measures suggested.CITATION:Mohanty, B and Zwaan, D, 2015. The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

The prime requirement is market, which for NZ inevitably means overseas markets. In order to be internationally competitive, the economies of scale and mechanical handling are essential. Since significant markets have not been sought, the full extent of our industrial mineral potential is not known. In general the technology exists to impart the desired quality, but at a price. Price is the main constraint, which may confine truly competitive operations to coastal situations to avoid high internal freight charges. Some commercial deposits of construction materials are being sterilised by zoning, making the costs to the consumer and country unnecessarily high. Unless management is enlightened and marketing is forceful, it can restrict growth. There is a good case to mount a search for phosphate minerals. The main growth areas are likely to be direct shipping ores like limestone, silica sand, and olivine, but in particular pumice.

The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. The Northland Peninsula of northern North Island, New Zealand contains a complex and diverse record of volcanism which reflects rapid tectonic changes during the late Cenozoic. The main volcanic associations observed on the peninsula are late Cretaceous- early oceanic crust obducted onto Northland at the end of the Oligocene, Miocene arc-type rocks and Pliocene-Quaternary intraplate basalts. This sucession of volcanic successions can be related to tectonic convergence developing into subduction and followed by a an environment of tectonic tension. While the volcanic activity is ultimately linked to specific tectonic regimes, because of rapid change magmatism was decoupled from the specific tectonic event. This decoupling of magmatism and tectonism appears to be a feature of the zones of plate interaction in the southwest Pacific region.

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I extend a particularly warm welcome to our shores to those of you who have travelled from overseas to attend this conference. I trust that you will find your visit to New Zealand both rewarding and enjoyable.   This is now my fourth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, the second of which has been jointly co-hosted by AusIMM and Crown Minerals. Since taking on the role of Associate Minister of Energy, I have had the opportunity to meet most of the industry players, and to visit a good number of the major mining operations. Through all of this I have become increasingly aware of not only how dynamic the minerals and coal industry is but also the array of factors that affect investment decisions in this business. Many of these factors, such as commodity prices and availability of investment funds, are determined primarily on the international stage. Others however, such as the allocation, regulatory and the fiscal regimes for minerals, are closer to home and are directly influenced by government policy decisions. I will talk more on what the government proposes in this area shortly.   But first, I would like to commend you all on your industryÆs continuing contribution to New Zealand Æs economy. 2004 has seen New Zealand Æs mineral and coal output top $1 billion for the second consecutive year. To put this achievement in perspective, it represents a staggering 47 per cent increase over the national output value recorded just five years ago. Notable contributions over the year came from gold which increased production to 10.2 tonnes (up nine per cent), ironsand production at 2.3 Mt (a 20 per cent increase), and industrial rocks and building stones (up six per cent) with rock for building, cement and roading showing significant rises on the back of strong regional growth and infrastructure development. Many regions, in particular Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Southland, recorded significant increased regional activity with supply often struggling to meet demand. By contrast the coal sector had a relatively steady year with production remaining stable at just over five million tonnes for the second year running. Coal exports however are now consistently exceeding two million tonnes annually, generating export earnings of over $200 million, and could well be higher with rail capacity improvements. Many countries throughout the world are now importing our high quality bituminous coal for steel manufacturing and other industrial uses.

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

The treatment meIhods selected for the concentrator at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. called for a high degree of automatic control of both the grinding and flotation sections.The resulting concentrator layout includes a central control room overlooking both grinding and flotation sections. The control room houses process recorders, controllers, and indicators. together with motor stopstart stations and alarms.Plant instrumentation includes load cells and variable speed hydraulic drive feeders for feed-rate control of autogenous mills, together with nuclear density gauges, differential flow transmitters, and pneumatic control valves for water and pulp density control.Flotation cell pulp levels are controlled by floats and pneumatic actuators; flotation reagent controls include magnetic flowmeters and time-operated solenoid valves.

The design and construction of a 2.5 million tonne per annum ship unloading system at the PWCS export coal terminal in Newcastle, NSW, has further increased the flexibility and sophistication of Australia's largest coal export facility. The system comprises a new unloading wharf serviced by a self unloading vessel, conveyor stream and multi compartment ground level storage shed. Coal is reclaimed from this shed by the largest portal scraper ever installed under cover. The system also provides additional flexibility by receiving coal from the existing PWCS road receival to improve scheduling. The PWCS can now simultaneously handle 11 coal types and receive from rail, road and sea at almost 15000 tonnes per hour.

The Mahakipawa gold deposit is located 21 km northwest of Blenheim. It became the site of a small hardrock gold rush in 1889 following nearby alluvial gold discoveries in 1888. The study investigates the geology of the area of hard rock mining in the vicinity between Cullens and Waikakaho Creeks. The Marlborough Schist which hosts the gold depos, it consists of polydeformed greenschist facies quartzofeldspathic psammitic, pelitic and volcanigenic schist.

Quantification of site-specific sulfide oxidation rates is crucial to accuracy of prediction of, for example, the environmental impact of a mine site. Sulfide oxidation reactions are reportedly increased by bacterial mediation; determination of abiotic and biotic weathering rates thus requires the establishment of sterile control samples. However, sterilisation often involves exposure of samples to extreme conditions that may alter the physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics of the tailings and hence affect element release rates. The impact of various sterilisation techniques, common and novel, on the element release rates from tailings from the Kristineberg site, northern Sweden, has been investigated. Batch weathering experiments indicated that the different methods of sterilisation (autoclaving, heat treatment, ethanol/heat treatment, application of antibiotics, rinsing with distilled water, and γ-radiation) did not greatly affect long-term element release rates. Long-term experiments (>30 days) are thus to be recommended for establishment of weathering rates. Sterilised and untreated control samples showed similar element release rates after ~100 days of experiments; possible explanations include that microbial oxidation is not important under our experimental conditions (Po2 = 0.2 atm, pH ~2.3, 22¦C, 0.01 M HNO3, no additional nutrients).
