Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) is an underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited (NML). Production drill and blast practices are critical to the success of the SLC method at RGM. SLC production ring precharging was introduced in November 2001 to enhance these practices and deliver safety, productivity and cost improvements. Current precharging practices require up to two rings to be loaded ahead of the ring to be blasted in each drawpoint. The explosive may be required to remain in the up-holes for periods of four weeks or more prior to blasting. During this æsleepÆ time it is subjected to repeated shock from the blasting ofadjacent rings and from rings in adjacent drawpoints. The project described in this paper was designed to gain an understanding of the factors affecting explosive performance in the precharging environment and to develop explosive products and operating practices that would meet RGMÆs requirements in terms ofsaf ety, reliability and blast outcomes. Several months oflaboratory and field testing were required to characterise the explosive and quantify the effect of post-loading blasting shock. These results were used to determine the most appropriate loading and sleep time criteria for RGMÆs precharging practices. In addition, the information is being used to guide the development of the next generation of emulsion explosives for use in underground precharging operations.

Datong coal Mine suffers from delays and sudden caving of its massive competent conglomerate roof. Detailed geological studies of the nature of pebbles and matrix of the conglomerate and its sparse bedding, joint and fracture structure, gave rise to investigation of water injection to destroy its strength and to control caving. Comparative investigations, including porisity, permeability, compressive strengths and water injection of conglomerate and sandstone led to empirical expressions relating various properties and to guidance for effective injection and caving practice. This new safe roof control practice should be even more improved with further research, including Modelling.

The performance of a hydrocyclone treating fine coal has been examined over a wide range of feed and operating conditions.The results were expressed in terms of partition curves from which the water split to the oversize flowstream,the corrected separation size and reduced partition curves were determined-.The following conclusions were obtained. (a) The water split to the oversize flowstream was found to be dependent upon the vortex finder and spigot diameters of the cyclone and the flowrate and solids content of the feed slurry. (b) The corrected separation size was dependent on the solids content of the feed,and the vortex finder and spigot diameters.The hydraulic pressure (or flowrate) of the feed slurry did not have a significant effect.This phenomenon could be explained in terms of crowding of the particles at the Spigot.

The world-class Waihi (>6.6 Moz Au, >41.8 Moz Ag) and adjacent Favona (>0.5 Moz Au) deposits are within a single volcanic-hosted epithermal Au-Ag district located in the southern Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Gold and silver mineralised quartz veins at both deposits are hosted in porphyritic andesite flows of the Waipupu Formation. Both deposits have veins surrounded by intense widespread hydrothermal alteration that is characterised by the assemblage of quartz, pyrite, adularia, illite or interstratified illite-smectite, plus less common chlorite and albite, which is locally overprinted by minor calcite or rare kaolinite. Quantitative mass transfer calculations using Gresen's general metasomatic equation indicate that hydrothermally altered andesite at both deposits is enriched in silicon, potassium, rubidium, barium, sulphur, gold, arsenic and antimony, whereas sodium, strontium and calcium are mostly lost. Iron and magnesium show mixed gain and loss. Element gain or loss can be directly related to the prevailing alteration mineralogy. Addition of potassium, rubidium and barium coupled with the concomitant loss of sodium, strontium and calcium in intensely altered wall rocks corresponds to the replacement of plagioclase by adularia or illite. Partial retention of sodium and calcium reflects the presence of hydrothermal albite and calcite, respectively. Mass balance calculations show distinct element gain and loss that can be related to the intensity and type of alteration mineralogy. However, because most rocks are intensely altered and the progression into less altered peripheral rocks is not observed in this study, the lateral extent of elements gain or loss is unconstrained with anomalies extending at least 200 to 300 m away from major veins.

the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

The great advances made in the application of solvent extraction to the recovery of copper from low grade ore sources over the past 15 to 20 years are well known. Solvent extraction is an essential step in the recovery and purification of copper from dilute sulphate leach solutions by which some one million tonnes of copper are now electrowon annually. A reagent is also available for the selective recovery of copper from chloride leach solutions and this may hold the key to the processing of complex sulphide ore concentrates. By comparison, the use of solvent extraction in the recovery and processing of zinc has as yet found little favour and is confined to only a few specific and comparatively small applications. This is despite the ready availability of a large number of low grade zinc sources and zinc-bearing wastes and residues. It is suggested that this difference is due in large part to the absence of suitable reagents having the particular features required to enable them to fit into a solvent extraction - electrowinning based process for zinc. Ideally, for the recovery of zinc from dilute sulphate solution, an extractant should operate on a proton exchange principle and be strong for zinc in the same way that o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents are strong towards copper. It should load efficiently with zinc at the pH of typical sulphate feed streams without the need for neutralisation and yet be stripped efficiently by spent zinc electrolyte. Another factor of major importance for many applications, however, is that it should be highly selective for zinc over ferric iron. These features have now been realised in a development extractant DS5846, which is a formulation of a novel class of reagent currently under investigation by Zeneca Specialties. The properties of this reagent are described with respect to selectivity, isotherms and how they compare with phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids that have been previously proposed for the extraction of zinc. For the recovery of zinc from concentrated chloride solutions a solvating or neutral donor type of extractant is required which again should ideally have high selectivity for zinc over a number of other metals, particularly iron. The new reagent Acorga ZNX50 is based on a formulation of a novel class of compound developed specifically for this purpose. It gives efficient extraction of zinc from feed solutions that are four to six molar in chloride ion but is readily stripped at 60 - 65¦C using either water, dilute brine, or spent zinc chloride electrolyte. The reagent is highly selective for zinc over iron and a range of other metals including cadmium, arsenic, lead and magnesium.

This paper addresses a gap in longwall multi-seam interactions and their predictions, providing a case study for future multi-seam operations for both anticipated conditions and a method for understanding the changes in stress regime. Multiple panels were modelled with the results analysed and compared to panel experiences to validate the parameters and properties. The software chosen (LaModel) is a numerical modelling package designed to model stresses and displacements on thin deposits. It utilises a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method and has been used extensively throughout both the United States and Australia in multi-seam operations. Analysis of the results demonstrates a clear correlation with the above workings and regions of significant strata instability. This provides the opportunity going forward to analyse new models and incorporate into mine planning and geotechnical designs. Continuous site-based assessment should be undertaken at multi-seam operations to better understand and quantify likely vertical stress levels within the workings. With a detailed analysis of models prior to extraction and a review of models post extraction. Further research is required as LaModel is limited to vertical stress and it is likely that interactions impact both the horizontal and shear stress regime. 3-dimensional modelling could further assist in this understanding, combined with a thorough stress monitoring regime. Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. Refractory application in the major iron and steelmaking units are discussed. Mechanis- ms of refractory consumption as revealed by pre- vious studies are reviewed and current practice is evaluated. Deficiencies in refractories now in use are noted and some lines of development are indicated. The iron and steelmaking units discussed are generally restricted to those subject to slagging, structural change or erosion at steel or iron making temperatures, and include the Blast Furnace, Hot Blast Stoves, Hot Metal Ladles, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, Continuous Cast- ing Units and Steel Teeming Ladles.

The treatment of the Broken Hill ores has,undergone many changes during the last ten years, and it may be of interest to some of the members to know what are the main lines on which the Proprietary Mine works at present. It must be understood that the want of absolute uniformity in the treatment amongst the various mines at the Barrier does not prove that some of the mines are working on wrong lines, for the ore is not exactly the same along the whole line of lode; this necessitates a variation in treatment, although generally only in detail.At the Proprietary Mine the ore is all mined by contract the miners are paid so much per ton for clean ore. The ore in the mine in most stopes is mixed with gangue, and the inclination of the uliners is, of course, to mix gangue with the ore, so as to be paid for as large 3 tonnage as possible. This is quite natural clean ore is easily distinguishable from clean gangue, but most lumps are a mixture of clean ore and gangue in varying proportions. The miner will naturally throw into his heap pieces which he considers still good enough, whilst the management may consider these pieces just a trifle too poor; consequently a check must be kept on this.This necessitates the first operation to which the ore is submitted. This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.

The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. The mining industry has been slow at adopting the latest management philosophies from other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, and in retrospect, with good cause. With the plethora of three-letter-acronyms such as TQM, JIT, TPM and now, BPR each touted as the panacea for profit improvement, you wonder if you must choose one or attempt to embrace them all! In truth, each new insight into organisational behaviour bears some investigation. This paper looks at the underlying principles and elements of successful change strategies, and how several mining companies, including coal mines, in Australia, Chile and Canada, are applying these principles to their operations. These examples illustrate the need to think radically, and to view mining as an overall process delivering value to the customer rather than a collection of functional silos. They also show that often, a continuous improvement initiative is not enough when a fundamental redesign, a paradigm shift, is needed for a performance breakthrough.

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. The cost of drilling consumables is always a large component of any mine budget. It is important that this cost be carefully examined with a view to reducing the overall cost per inetre or at least minimising its escalation.At Renison it is considered that the only way to ensure drilling costs do not rise unduly is through a total system of control from purchase to disposal.In 1979 extension of an existing drill supply service contract was carefully examined and abandoned in favour of a hybrid system. This system is providing a great deal of control over the use of drilling consumables and has maintained a relatively constant cost per drilled metre over the last five years.Current consignment stock contracts for drilling consumables are strictly specified by the Technical Services section of the Mine Department and consumables purchased under these contracts are distributed and refurbished/sharpened by a contractor.The total result of this package is individual drilling items that achieve the best cost per metre and careful distribution and maintenance to ensure maximum life.

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. Bivariate recoverable resource estimation aims at predicting the recovered metal for a secondary variable when a cut-off is applied to a primary variable. The choice of a consistent geostatistical model is advisable to allow a robust estimation from exploration data of the primary and secondary metal recovery functions on a generic selection block (selective mining unit û SMU) within large panels. Ore processing decisions at Lihir Gold LimitedÆs Lihir Gold Mine are based on the gold and sulfur estimates of SMUs from production (grade control) data. The predictive model from exploration data at Lihir is based on the estimation of a recoverable resource for gold by Uniform Conditioning (UC), with an estimate of the sulfur grade being provided by Ordinary Kriging of panels. While univariate UC is adapted to the diffusive nature of the gold mineralisation (Ladolam orebody) at Lihir, the independent estimation of sulfur, through ordinary kriging, fails to capture the potential spatial correlation that exists between gold and sulfur mineralisation. This paper presents a practical implementation of bivariate UC, which better represents in the resource model the spatial correlation between gold and sulfur. Incremental economic gains through improved definition of material categories and scheduling are investigated, and the particular impact on the process of geological interpretation and domaining is emphasised.

The æProfit Driver ModelÆ is a tool which builds costs from first principles and integrates revenue, costs and physical mining parameters and, hence, can quantify the impact and leverage on profit. In this paper an æexample mineÆ has been created to represent a typical Australian Open Cut Coal Mine. This has then been input into the Profit Driver Model to allow different variables to be tested. A series of variables were tested to determine which ones had the highest impact on profit and results are useful to management as a guide to the areas in which they can focus effort to achieve better profitability. Whilst the highest profit drivers are those external to the control of management and include selling price and exchange rate, the next most sensitive are those variables related to the geology of the mine and the mining method. These included coal quality, yield and strip ratio. Site management has some control of these. For example, the ability to vary the sequence of mining or improve the yield by a more efficient coal washing process. The efficiency of the workforce and management has similar impact to the mining variables. Finally, there are the supply variables, such as fuel, labour and explosives which are the least sensitive although, cumulatively, still significant. Each mine is different and the results of the example mine will not apply to all mines. However, the approach taken is universal and the tool illustrates a simple method to quantify the profit impact when changing variables. The benefit of the approach is the short time taken to get a set of results. This allows the more detailed and time consuming work to be more focused. The results illustrate that management has a significant influence on profitability.

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.
