"In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (e.g. Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northern Mexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids were _10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralization and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralizing solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

Cadia Hill Pit is a gold copper porphyry deposit hosted in monzonite. The pit slope design is primarily based on structural controls related to faults and shears with largely massive rock masses between the structures. The slope design attempts to achieve an optimum configuration at a bench to overall scale, considering economics and safety implications against the geotechnical and structural conditions. To date the slopes have been mined at interramp angles of up to 60¦ over heights of 120 m. Limited slope and batter failures that have occurred are structurally controlled and occur rapidly. The pit-mining schedule requires concurrent mining of part of the final pit walls and the progressive interim cutbacks. Engineering and operational solutions to hazard reduction and risk management issues have been implemented wherever viable to æengineerÆ out the hazard and mitigate the risks. However, comprehensive management plans and operating procedures have also played a vital role. This paper details the management plan and the operating procedures that have been developed and implemented to mitigate the risks associated with rock falls.

Grinding circuits are used in most mineral processing plants. Their widespread application makes the efficient running of the circuits essential to almost all resource projects. This paper will show that, with the application of modern multivariable control techniques, improved plant performance can be obtained when compared with conventional single loop control strategies. Results are presented for a simulated closed-circuit ball mill.The grinding circuit was controlled using the rod-mill water and primary and secondary sump dilution flowrates as the manipulated variables. Variables controlled were the primary cyclone feed flowrate, the primary cyclone feed density and the particle-size measurement (percentage smaller than 75 um).

A new gold cyanidation assay technique has been proven for a range of ores, where it has demonstrated benefits of being: ò Accurate (reduces the typical range of assay scatter almost three-fold, and avoids common fire assay interferences). ò Fast (under one hour, providing a quantum shift in space requirement and equipment utilisation each bottle roll can provide over 15 determinations per day). ò Simple (suitable for field application, no high skill or experience requirements). ò Profitable (reduced drilling, drilling time, ore misclassification and/or double handling after mining). ò Cheap (far lower cost than Fire or Aqua Regia Assays, ie LeachWELLTM costs around 10ó for a 20 g sample at 50 per cent solids, proportionately greater for larger samples eg $1 for 200 g samples which address most nugget effect problems). ò Relevant (distinguishes economic. ie cyanide-extractable gold, the only unequivocal value to use for true resource definition, mine planning and grade control). ò Robust (rough bucket chemistry of samplers does not seriously affect results). A new development is the provision of LeachWELLTM CAS, a solution, which also contains optimum cyanide and stabiliser concentrations; and offers greater: ò Safety (the dilute cyanide solutions are stabilised to avoid generating toxic HCN vapours; and present no cyanide dust or flying chips to deal with). ò Ease (a single squirt dispenses precise quantities of the entire reagent suite, avoiding multiple weighings). ò Reduction in total reagent costs. An inter-laboratory comparison on nine ore types, using two assay techniques (Fire Assay and Aqua Regia) involving 45 laboratories, has demonstrated that LeachWELLTM 60X assays for the samples tested, were equally or more reliable than typical Fire or Aqua Regia Assays. There is particularly great benefit in applying LeachWELLTM 60X assays to richer ores in comparison to Aqua Regia assays, which appear to be prone to very significant underassaying depending on individual analyst skills, and which often suffer greater nugget effects. The major impacts for heap leaching are that: ò Using the LeachWELLTM assay technique for grade control, ore of marginal grade is not accidentally discarded to waste or visa versa due to the scatter of assay data inherent in typical small charge (25 g) fire assays. ò LeachWELLTM assays very importantly report only that gold which will be recoverable in the heap, viz that which is liberated - an important factor where the coarse crush often leaves ten per cent of gold unliberated. These impacts are of particular importance for many ores (ie most of those recovered from open pit operations and at the margins of rich ore subject to slurry processing) subjected to heap leaching as the oxide zones often present major problems of nugget effects as well as mineralisation that cannot be accurately assigned through interpretation of clear structural controls.

The True Pipe® in-line sampler was developed in an attempt to address the need for a mechanically reliable and correctly designed sampler to suit one-dimensional pressurised slurry pipelines, often found in metallurgical process plants but for which no reliable and representative sampling solution as yet exists.The design, whose operation is based on the principle of symmetry, is described by Dominique François-Bongarçon (2005) with the synchronous opening and closing of relevant valves. It representatively isolates portions of the particulate material stream at predetermined intervals for effective extraction of primary increments for subsequent sample compositing.Theory of Sampling applicable solutions have proven elusive in flowing pressurised particulate material streams, with various attempts to date not having formulated a viable, mechanically reliable and acceptable design.Compliance to sampling theory is critical, and a number of tests were conducted where certain operating parameters were altered to determine their influence and sensitivity on sampling representativeness.The results of the initial series of tests performed on a carefully designed rig are presented, with additional work discussed for necessary investigation in the near future.Getting closer to a robust, economic and correct design for this challenging application in the minerals industry may now not be that far away. Plant management staff will see improved metallurgical mineral balances around their process plants and significantly reduced sampling discrepancies, particularly in tailings applications. Improved quality control is now possible where, due to plant head room constraints, classical cross stream sampling methods cannot be employed.CITATION:Steinhaus, R C and Halstead, G J, 2014. This paper will first discuss the fundamental requirements for reliable discharge of backfill by gravity alone at high per cent solids. This discussion will include brief mention of the underlying principles of saturated solids flow contrasted to that of stirred tank or dilute discharge systems. Here the need to possess full knowledge of the flow properties of the stored material will be highlighted. In addition proper account must be made of the silo overflow weir and settling capacity to match plant throughput. Here opportunity will be taken to highlight the complexity of this multi-phase flow situation as well as the general yet paramount requirements for reliable solids flow. It will be shown that by proper attention to the multi-phase considerations gravity discharge of slurries as a consolidated bed with minimal water content is possible. Such high solids discharge results in greatly reduced demand for process water. In addition pumping costs are reduced as is the delay time associated with the mine drainage operation. Confirmation of successful applications will be highlighted by reference to several recent case studies. In the concluding phase mention will be made of the key yet very simple and effective operation techniques which enhance reliable discharge. The simplicity and reliability of properly designed gravity discharge backfill tank systems suggests increased application of this technology by the mining industry.

Blast design involves many engineering constraints and objectives. Some of the more important include the implementation costs, the desired fragmentation and shape of the muckpile. A spreadsheet has been developed to allow blast design options such as burden, spacing, blast hole diameter, decking and explosive type to be varied. As any option is varied the spreadsheet recalculates and graphs the expected implementation costs, fragmentation and muckpile shape in seconds.The spreadsheet extends the philosophy of simple robust fragmentation prediction (Cunningham, 1983) to include similar models for explosive detonation (with respect to explosive type, age, blast hole diameter and density) and muckpile shape (with respect to burden, spacing, charge location and weight). The new empirical models for explosive detonation and muckpile shape prediction have been calibrated successfully for one situation and are now undergoing further field trials.

The equity market is now very much within a global village environ- ment, with various exchanges acting as agencies for the big casino. In this predicament, mining companies, who provide the most extensive, but relevant risk assessment information, will be best placed for favoured treatment by potential international investors: But what risk assessment information in summary form can be provided to support a resource/reserve statement? Even more importantly, does "objective" data exist, whose trends will support a resource/reserve state- ment? A prime need of the informed mining investor is to determine whether or not the resource/reserve statement is believable? But more importantly will it be realised? While the implications within the text of the majority of reports on resource/reserves suggests that the estimates are conservative, the record indicates that very few estimates are. In fact, to date, reports claiming to be conservative in respect of the overall grade estimate at a specfic cutoff have not reflected the realised grade at the stated cutoff; it has been more common for the realised grade to be lower than implied by the resource/reserve statement. Further, it is not uncommon for penalty elements to be understated and these components are rarely incorporated within resource/reserve statements.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

Loader cut and fill stoping was first used at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mine in 1966. The equipment used included single boom pneumatic jumbos for drilling up- holes, diesel loaders for ore removal and diesel utility vehicles for rockbolting and servicing. Since 1966, there have been many modifi- cations and changes both in the equipment and stoping method. Twin boom pneumatic or hy- draulic drilling jumbos have replaced single boom pneumatic jumbos, electric loaders have replaced diesel loaders, diesel forklifts have replaced utility vehicles and "'flatbacking" has superseded uphole stoping. Concurrent with this has been the introduction of cable dowels in stope backs which has enabled loader cut and fill stoping to be used more extensiv- ely than in the past. There are now six loader cut and fill stopes at both mines and this paper traces the evolution of this method outlining the reasons for changes in technique and equipment.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

Aims of the Forum A contribution from Dr Robin Batterham, Vice President, RIO TINTO Research & Technology and a member of The AusIMM Standing Technology Advisory Qroup. Dr Robin Batterham is of view that the inevitability of automation in the minerals industry and the importance of addressing the human implications. He also outlined Rio Tinto's approach to automation. The progressive introduction of automation into mining operations will be revolutionary in its effects. This is the experience in other industries and it will be no different in mining. Mining companies most successful at implementing the new technologies will gain relative competitive advantage and those manufacturers who produce the most desirable automated equipment for miners will also gain market share.

Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

A distinguishing feature of tunnels in squeezing rocks is that a large deformation of the surrounding rocks takes place slowly and gradually, often called squeezing phenomenon. It is different from the rocksbursting phenomenon during which the deformation of tunnels occurs instantaneously when the resulting stresses exceed the strength of the surrounding rocks. The squeezing phenomenon has received great attention in the field of rock mechanics and tunnelling recently. The mechanism and various factors related to the large deformation and failure of tunnels in squeezing rocks are discussed in this paper on the basis of field investigations and laboratory model tests. The relationship between the deformation of surrounding rocks and support of the tunnels in squeezing rocks is presented in the form of numerical modelling.

Kamhalda is located within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, specifically in the Norseman - Wiluna greenstone belt. Numerous nickel sulphide deposits have been mined at Kambalda with I I mines currently operating. For several years, a program of in-mine geophysics has been operating at Kambalda, with downhole electromagnetics (UHEM) one of the key techniques used. Three case studies illustrating the uses of UHEM in mines are presented here. In the first example, the Helmut South deposit was discovered as the result of an extensional exploration program. The first drill hole in the program intersected ore width and grade mineralisation at around 760 in depth. Two subsequent holes intersected subgrade mineralisation. DHEM surveys were completed in each of these three holes, with anomalies recorded indicating that a large conductor was located directly south of the first hole. The next hole intersected this target, for an intersection of 21.6 in at 3.5 per cent Ni. DHEM continued to play a role as the exploration program proceeded, providing drill hole targeting based on anomalous responses recorded in each drill hole. In the second example from Carnilya Hill, old drill holes were surveyed with DHEM in order to search a large section of prospective contact for massive ore pods. An off-hole anomaly was detected and subsequent mining discovered a small but high-grade pod of ore which was extracted for a considerable profit. Carnilya Hill has limited reserves and discoveries such as this, assist in keeping the mine operating. In the third example from Victor, a program of drilling intersected thin ore profiles in an interpreted flanking position. Without massive ore close by, these intersections probably do not constitute economic mineralisation. DHEM surveys of three holes did not detect any conductors. The area is now regarded as sterilised of significant massive ore and exploration efforts and dollars can be focused in other areas. These three examples demonstrate the type of successes that can he achieved through the use of DHEM.
