The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is an extensive low angle semibrittle mineralised structure in the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand. The shear zone is located on the lower limb of a late metamorphic recumbent fold. Structural observations suggests that the shear zone initiated as a high strain mylonite zone and transgressed the ductile/brittle boundary (D4) later in its development. A surge zone at Round Hill is bounded to the south by a NE-SW striking lateral ramp which displaces the hanging wall shear (HWS) by 50 m. Oblique strike slip displacement during surge zone propagation created space for deposition of the sheeted vein complex or stockwork. Quartz recrystallisation in stockwork veins suggests that the veins were deformed in a ductile manner and implies that surge zone propagation may have occurred during late D3 deformation. A macroantiform was produced during D3/D4 shortening below the HWS. Over tightening of the antiform hinge created SW and NE-dipping ramp thrusts. Continued strike slip displacement along the lateral ramp rotated the antiform and associated ramps into a south plunging drag fold. Post-mineralisation (D5) structures include NE-dipping nonna! faults below the HWS and SW-dipping low angle imbricate thrusts above the HWS. The development of these structures was kinematically compatible with normal movement on the HMSZ and is related to mid Cretaceous break up of Gondwanaland in the SW Pacific.

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

THE alkaline method for the estimation of zinc cannot, in the writer's opinion, be relied. upon to within very narrow limits between two assayers on unknown quantities of zinc. The end point is not decisive enough, and allows the personal factor toenter largely into the assay. The following investigation was undertaken to see how accurate the acid method is on Broken Hill concentrates and ores, and what should be the limit between the results of two assayers. The method adopted is as follows:Weigh sufficient amount of ore to give titration (between 20 and 50 cc.), place in tall 400 cc. beaker, cover, add 7 cc. nitric acid and heat till brown fumes cease to be evolved. Wash dock glass into assay, add potassium chlorate, evaporate to dryness on a slow fire with the beaker uncovered. When no smell of chlorine or nitric acid is observed, remove and cool. Add 100 cc. boiling water, then 7 grm. ammonium chloride, W cc. ammonia (.880 sp. gr.), boil for five minutes, filter, wash...

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited operates a Lead/Zinc Smelter at Cockle Creek, some 11 miles from Newcastle, N. S. W . Works effluents totalling some 8, 500, 000 gallons/day join Cockle Creek some 1. 8 miles from its mouth in the most northerly section of Lake Macquarie, The Creek is also the source of the Works cooling water intake of which approximates 8, 000, 000 g.p. d. In view of the wide use of the Lake for recreational activities by the people of Newcastle and the surrounding areas, particular care must be taken to ensure that the control of effluent quality is of a high order. This paper outlines the philosophy and measures taken for the treatment and control of plant effluents discharging into Cockle Creek.

This paper focuses on the significant impact that geological information has in relation to the valuation, both equity market and accounting records, of mining companies. There are many different measures adopted by investors and analysts in valuing mining companies. In particular, focus is primarily on calculation of profit as it is the authors primary expertise. The importance of geological information to the calculation of profit (and to many other measures of a mining company performance) is not always understood by the geologist. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of geologists (particularly those who are competent persons under the JORC code) of the impact that reserve statements û and changes to û have on profits. This is the first time that this subject has been presented directly to geologists. Similar versions of this paper have been presented at other forums where other important users (directors, auditors, accountants, analysts, investors) or preparers of financial statements have been made aware of the importance of the geological information. In essence, all mining companies prepare annual financial statements, which are adopted by directors and audited. The major items that require judgement generally revolve around two areas û commodity price outlook and the accuracy of reserves and resources. Reserves and resources are important, and that there is undoubtedly a lack of understanding about the assumptions and accuracy of reserves and resources by accountants, directors and auditors, and a general lack of understanding by geologists as to how the information that they prepare is used. Across the globe the majority of mining companies are listed on stock exchanges (with the main exception being nationally controlled mining companies û eg Codelco). In a very simplistic manner, I have divided all mining companies into three types: exploration plays û these companies are still in the finding or proving modeÆ and typically the stock market and investors rely on geological information and remaining cash in determining their assessment of the company; single mine companies û the major items that investors and the stock market look for are reserves, inferred resources, commodity price outlook and discounted cashflow calculations; and multiple mine companies û the investment community and stock market are looking at reserves, inferred resources (generally to a lesser extent at this stage), commodity price outlook, discounted cashflow calculations and profit and loss accounts. Regardless of the type of company, the equity markets, including analysts, try to determine appropriate valuations for mining companies. In doing this the major two areas that require judgemental consideration are the commodity price outlook and the level of reserves and resources. Generally speaking, most mining companies have a strong understanding of their cost structures û in particular their cash costs as distinct from their accounting costs of production û and therefore this area generally gets less consideration than the other two matters mentioned above.

A risk assessment was undertaken of the aquatic ecosystem and bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in fish at the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa, Queensland. Residual contamination of metals and metalloids in Leichhardt River sediment was assessed and arose from mine practices using river discharge in the 1940s. The ecological risk assessment of sediments involved comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic with those of the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Results indicated that all sites including the background site exceeded one or both the ISQG-high and ISQG-low trigger values based on total concentrations. A lesser number of sites exceeded the ISQG-low trigger values following the 1 M hydrochloric acid extract step, which was used as an indication of bioavailability. An additional risk from particulate matter in river sediment is that acute human toxicity from the consumption of fish contaminated with metals and metalloids is unlikely. The potential risk was assessed by comparing with the maximum levels set by FSANZ (2010) for fish consumption by children and adults. In general, the liver of the fish have higher heavy metal and metalloid concentrations compared to the muscle. Frequent or regular consumption of fish from the Leichhardt River that exceed maximum levels (ML) of heavy metals and metalloids is not recommended. Risk analysis showed that an adult can consume up to 5 kg of fish fillets every day from fish caught at the man-made Lake Moondarra downstream on Leichhardt River and still be within safe consumption levels whilst a child can eat up to 1 kg daily.CITATION:Noller, B N, Ng, J C, Matanitobua, V, Harris, H H, Zheng, J and Huynh, T, ?2014. The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. The authors review the literature and discuss the application of methods to the design of thickeners for ilocculated metallurgical pulps. The use and evaluation of flocculents is described. Experimental data show that design based upon laboratory settlingdata is acceptable. The economic aspect of design is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years there has been little change in the methods for the design of thickener installations. While modifications have been made in the method of applying the data all methods have been based on the observee settling rate of the solids. The development of a theoretical approach based on physical data would involve so many variables which affect the settling rate that the more practical approach of direct observation seems unlikely to be replaced as the basis of design.The advent of synthetic fiocculents has introduced a modification in operation which affects design and should be considered. The authors review the subject and attempt to bring it up to date with present day procedure. Until recently the original work of Coe and Clevenger (1916) remained the basis of thickener design. They described their observation of the different zones encountered in settling, namely clarification, feed, transition, and compression or thickening- zones. The solids pass through the transition zone in settling from feed density to some higher density where settling ceases and ·some compression or compaction effect controls. the density obtained. The point at which the settling zone ceases to exist is known as the critical point.

To provide suitable backfill material for the cut and fill mining method being used to extract ore from the C.S.A. mine, flotation tailings are deslimed in single stage cyclones. The sand fraction is stored on the surface in unagitated storage bins before being pumped underground, while the slime portion is thickened and pumped to a residue dam. Design and operating details of the sand preparation and storage sections are given.The initial preparation of a stope for filling, consists of laying percolation and decantation drainage pipes on the sill floor. Preparation for fllling of subsequent lifts consists of rearing up the ventilation pipes at the ends of the stope, preparing the decantation system, and building a barricade or wall. The fill is carried to, and discharged into, the stope through 4 in. diameter pipes and filling of any section is carried out 24 hr/day normally without supervision. The fill is retieulated underground to the 1200 ft level through rubber lined pipe installed in the upcast shaft. Boreholes of 3 in. diameter drilled from the1200 ft level convey fill to the 1800 ft level. The mine drainage system is basically designed to handle the water associated with hydraulic filling. A system of primary and secondary sumps has been installed to handle the percolation and decantation drainage from stapes and to allow settling of fines before the water is fed to the main pump station.A programme of investigation into the properties of the emplaced fill is in progress. Results to date indicate that the fill as presently placed and drained, will not cause any problems in the mining of vertical orebodies by cut and fill methods for lifts in excess of 300 ft.

All sections of our community are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of uncontroll- ed erosion associated with modern earthworksy whether they be concerned with the protection of capital structures, reforestation of mine tailings or generally the aesthetic and ecol- ogical impact. Because of the many ecological variances and climatic conditions no single technique may be offered as the complete answer. Rather that a combination of a series of techniques is nec- essary to achieve an individual end result. These techniques may appear to be expensive initially, but when considered in relation to the overall cost, and we realise that this work represents our only insurance of the stability of our project, the cost of stabilisation is insignificant. Once erosion has commenced the cost of stabilisation escalates dramatically which highlights the definite need to include the requirement of stabilisation in early design of your projects. Stabilisation should commence during construction to ensure that control of mobile soils is gained at the earliest possible time.

The paper reviews the majority of associations and institutions which operate in support of the Australian mineral industry. The review covers historical aspects of each organisation and the current activities and management structure. The linkages between the organisations through membership are briefly discussed. The paper comments on the evolution of the formation of the organi- sations and the networks between them that do exist and operate regu- larly. Rationalisation or a process to consider formation of new groups to fill gaps in the network are recommended for further research.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.
