"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

"The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

"Base metal and precious metal deposits are well known for their significant geometallurgical variation throughout the volume of the proven resource. At the metallurgical level, the plant normally processes an upper oxidised layer, a transition zone and a sulfide zone, often leading to different processing techniques for the different zones. A novel processing approach is presented whereby alkaline leaching with glycine is used to leach base and precious metals, using a copper-gold ore deposit as a case study. Glycine is a cheap, non-toxic, non-volatile, highly water-soluble crystalline solid produced industrially in bulk quantities. As a chelating ligand it forms a number of stable glycinate complexes with Ni, Co, Cu, platinum group metals (PGMs), Au, Ag, Zn, Pb, Hg and Cd, with broad stability regions over an extended temperature-pH-Eh range, allowing dissolution of these metals in the neutral and alkaline regions (pH 7–13). It has been shown that this lixiviant system can leach the metals from their oxide, oxy-halide, basic sulfate, carbonate, native and various sulfide forms, including refractory sulfides such as chalcopyrite. Extraction of the metals from their soluble glycinates is easily achieved using a range of solvent extraction and precipitation processes, and the glycine remains stable in aqueous solution for recycle and reuse. Minerals bearing metals in Groups 1 to 8 of the periodic table are normally unaltered. This technology therefore provides a highly selective leaching environment for the extraction of numerous scarce metals of economic interest, with minimal interaction with gangue minerals, whilst using environmentally benign reagents. Problematic leach residues such as jarosites, elemental sulfur and silica gels are averted through this processing approach. In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

In large coal strip mines, there are many different processes at work: stripping, overburden removal using trucks/shovels, cast blasting, slot dozer pushing, more fragmentation and further truck/shovel benches. A key component to each of these steps is the use of machines. In modern operations, most machine costs are tracked within Enterprise systems that transact costs and repair work order management. Similarly, in contemporary mines most machines are tracked using technology that provides precise performance measures for each key process. Such technologies include productivity monitors on draglines, dozers and drills and fleet management systems for trucks and shovels. Linking these two sources of seemingly disparate data û costs and performance by machine û would allow for the precise calculation of unit costs by specific machine. This is similar to an activity-based costing system, except in this machine-based system, calculations are made at an even finer granular level. There are many uses for such an integrated information system in mine planning and performance management, both in real-time and through historical analysis.A real-time fleet costs (FLC) measurement process was developed as part of a larger blending-related, multi-million dollar project centred on a centralised remote control room developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management Mine Control Center. The FLC component of the overall blending system would allow a mine controller to manage the equipment fleet by viewing its cost in real time and, when mixed with other revenue-related components, the exact profit. For example, a mine controller may show high utilisation while still maintaining a production surplus. This could occur, for example, if the equipment is driven long distances. This might appear in traditional performance metrics as æhigh production performanceÆ, but in reality may prove less profitable. This paper discusses the technical development of the FLC, its deployment and its impact on controller performance, and compares mine profitability before and after its application.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve resource efficiency by creating a spatial model of an orebody in order to forecast ore processing behaviour. This enables calculation of the economic value of each ore block and the use of this information for production optimisation and hence an improved economic return. Modelling uses different approaches to link geological information with mineral processing: traditional approach uses chemical elements; proxy approach – small-scale geometallurgical tests; and mineralogical approach – minerals.A geometallurgical model is obtained during execution of a geometallurgical program encompassing the entire value chain of ore processing. Available methods for establishing a geometallurgical model are in many cases limited and not yet comprehensively validated. Some of the limitations include: sampling density, assaying methods and quality, forecast accuracy block model content, geostatistical solutions for non-additive components, blending and assessment of positive impact of geometallurgy on the project. Synthetic ore models combined with process simulations and production scheduling, based on strong case studies, present a viable way to address these shortcomings. Such synthetic ore models will have realistic elemental and mineral distribution, textural attributes and 3D variability for input into the design of an appropriate geometallurgical program.A synthetic orebody was created for an apatite-bearing iron deposit. Variability in modal mineralogy was described by geostatistical parameters combined by a set of linear and trigonometric functions. The generated synthetic deposit model was used to develop a mine production plan to generate a simulated process feed. The process feed had detailed information required for beneficiation process simulation: modal mineralogy, chemical composition of minerals, grain size and specific gravity. The synthetic system was used to measure benefits that a geometallurgical program developed for real cases could provide, compared to production where only head grade is optimised. In submitting the accompanying sketch and description, the writer mentions that he has found this "gadget" a useful assay office adjunct.He believes that some millmen and assayers have been confronted, from time to time, with large samples of mill pulp for assay purposes and that although the commonly used method of coning and quartering dry sample is simple and effective, provided the samples are of reasonable proportion, the operator is frequently confronted with samples of pulp, sometimes up to 50 gallons. The writer stresses the advantage of being able to handle these samples. This fact inspired the design of the "gadget,"which was developed at the Kalgoorlie State Battery and has been found to give very reliable results. It has considerably eased the work of the assay office.Description. - A cone of suitable dimensions according to requirements (this one is about six gallons' capacity) is mounted on a light angle-iron frame and has a small hand-operated agitator paddle let into it far mixing purposes. The agitator and head frame are removable to facilitate cleaning. Four outlet pipes at the bottom at right angles to each other are controlled with one common plug, externally operated for discharging the pulp.Each operation of the machine delivers four equal parts; one or more of these can be used for further division as conditions require. "Geometallurgy is a discipline that seeks to improve the sustainability of the extraction of metals and minerals by promoting the smarter use of non-renewable resources, better energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy. To achieve these goals, development of innovative technologies and approaches are being developed along the entire commodity value chain, starting with exploration and extraction and extending to reuse and recycling. This paper discusses the geometallurgy of industrial minerals with special emphasis on kaolin, a versatile industrial mineral applied in ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, ink, sealants, adhesives, sanitary ware, glass fibre, toothpaste, animal feed etc. Aspects of kaolin extraction in south-west UK are analysed from a geometallurgical perspective. While geometallurgy already features in kaolin extraction, its role can be significantly expanded by combining advanced in-pit characterisation and orebody modelling with integrated planning and control of the refining and calcination process. After many years of studying the rock mass gravitational flow phenomenon, it is well known that moisture conditions may change the mechanical properties of the caved and broken material, causing different problems at drawpoints. One specific problem, perhaps one of the most unpredictable and uncontrollable, is that of mudflows (also known as mud rushes). The aim of this paper is to show how to establish optimal extraction rates at a drawpoint in order to avoid the closure of that drawpoint due to the high risk associated with having high-technology automated loaders working in the production level of panel cave and block cave mines prone to mud flow events. This optimisation should take into consideration critical restrictions related to mine planning, such as the need to reach the planned production. It is also important to consider the correct design of surface (in the subsidence zone) and underground drainage systems to prevent groundwater or rainwater entering muck piles, filled stopes, galleries or open cuts. With these considerations, and keeping in mind other factors that should be included in a sensitivity analysis of variables, it is possible to find a correlation between the percentage of extraction from a drawpoint and the possibility of occurrence of a mudflow. Finally, this paper proposes different draw strategy techniques in order to mitigate potential mudflow issues on a caving production level.

"In the platinum group metals (PGM) industry, smelters are often perceived as ‘black boxes’ that have to process concentrates of variable mineralogy and originating from multiple mines operating along strike or downdip from each other in the same geographical region, as is the case in the Western Bushveld of South Africa. However, PGM smelter complexes are much more sensitive to concentrate blend variation than most metallurgists or geologists would anticipate.This paper will review the impact of concentrate blends deriving from a number of concentrators processing ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) on smelting and converting behaviour and the constraints they impose upon smelter operation. Significant variation in behaviour is not only noted between the main mineralisation types, namely the Merensky and Upper Group 2 (UG2) reefs, but also within a given reef type. Due to the way PGMs are mineralised and finely disseminated, concentrators have to grind concentrates ultra-fine to liberate the PGMs and provide a sufficiently high-grade concentrate for smelting.The chemistry and mineralogy of the concentrates vary with the type of mine (open pit versus underground), the reef type and varies along strike; this variation impacts numerous key smelter parameters such as the base metals content, the matte fall, the converter aisle capacity, sulfur dioxide gas production, furnace matte and slag temperatures, and the accumulation of high smelting chromite-spinel minerals that has led to significant smelter upset conditions such as catastrophic furnace hearth and sidewall failures.Due to the production intensity of smelting, ie its high rate of processing per unit volume, smelters have been found to be far more sensitive to rapid variation in concentrate properties, highlighting the need for adequate blend control.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, 2016. "It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. Determination of cut-off grade?strategy is one of the most important stages of open pit mine planning and design. It is the parameter directly influencing the financial, technical, economic, legal, environmental, social and political issues in relation to mining operation. Choosing the optimum cut-off grade strategy that maximises the economic outcome has been a major topic of research workers for nearly one century. Many researchers have contributed in devising methods and algorithms, such as dynamic programming, linear programming, optimal control and so on for various aspects of its determination. In this paper, a non-linear mathematical programming for cut-off grade strategy optimisation is presented, considering the three main stages of mining operation introduced by K F Lane. In this model maximisation of net present value of mining operation, under the three constraints of mining stagesÆ capacities, considered as the optimisation criteria. Due to the discrete representation of the mining resource, the proposed non-linear formulation is approximated by a non-linear signomial geometric programming. According to non-convexity and the complexity of the proposed model, an augmented Lagrangian genetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cut-off grade strategy under varying and fixed price circumstances. To validate the proposed non-linear model efficiency, the results were compared with the results obtained by the K F Lane methodology. It was found that the proposed non-linear model works efficiently in the determination of cut-off grade strategy. According to the simplicity of the structure of non-linear programming modelling in comparison with dynamic programming it is hoped that, further development of this model would certainly provide the ability of considering managerial and technical flexibilities as well as incorporating more real mining conditions in the determination of cut-off grade strategy optimisation.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. "In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. Probabilistic analysis is widely used in slope stability assessment because of its capability to take into account uncertainties associated with geotechnical parameters. There are, however, still many unresolved practical issues to the application of the method. One of these issues is the integration of assessments when multiple sets of fractures are considered for the entire slope. In the present study, this issue is addressed within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation. Probability of failure for pairs of fracture sets are assessed independently and the final assessment of the probability of failure for the entire slope is done using conditional probabilities. Prominent Hill open pit, in particular, the problematic fresh Bulldog shale formation, was used as a case study to test the method proposed. The SWEDGE program of the RocScience software package was used for the analysis.

"In the past decade, increased processing capacity combined with precision robotics in high resolution spectrometers has resulted in a new generation of high-speed hyperspectral core logging systems. The application of these multisensor automated platforms provides a key advancement in the characterisation of metal resources. The development of this technology has allowed for comprehensive, drill core-based, mine-scale rock mass characterisation studies. Here we propose a new method for the extraction of parameters that seek to more accurately quantify ground conditions, including quantified rock mass rating (RMR) and the Rock Tunnelling Quality (Q) Index. Data inputs include rock quality designation (RQD), number of joint sets, joint roughness, joint alteration and joint spacing. Geologists and geotechnical engineers have historically collected these inputs by manually logging drill core. With automated core scanning technologies, these parameters can be estimated from the acquired image data and used to objectively calculate RMR and Q-index values for oriented core.Corescan is an automated hyperspectral core scanner that uses a 3D laser profiling system to measure the height of the surface of drill core. This technology allows for rapid core analysis to produce detailed fracture and rock condition data. Through an integrated geometallurgical approach, the proposed methodology will test the accuracy of joint measurement using the height profile Corescan data from oriented drill core. This will be combined with joint roughness and alteration mineralogy measured from the hyperspectral images to calculate the RMR and the Q-index continuously downhole. The values obtained can then be compared to the traditional, manual geotechnical log data. If the precision is sufficient, these techniques can then be applied site-wide to automate the collection and modelling of key ground condition classification indices across an entire deposit. Compared to the laborious manual geotechnical logging procedures that currently form the industry standard, utilisation of core laser profile data and high resolution red-green-blue (RGB) images provide an opportunity to collect large volumes of consistent geotechnical data, which can increase the efficiency and accuracy of deposit scale geotechnical models.CITATION:Harraden, C L, Berry, R and Lett, J, 2016. "Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and free milling gold. In situ heterogeneity of mineralisation results in grade and process parameter variability, which will increase project risk. Measured variability is often enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Protocols that are optimised within the framework of the theory of sampling to suit the ore type, together with quality assurance/quality control systems, will reduce variability and provide fit-for-purpose results. The geometallurgical approach requires spatially distributed samples within a deposit to support variability modelling. Diverse attributes from core logging, mineralogical/textural determination and small-scale tests are used to measure variability. This contribution emphasises early stage geometallurgical intervention during project development. It presents a discussion of representative sampling in the context of the theory of sampling. "Mining has still today high potential for improvement in the exploitation efficiency. Especially low-grade ores have very low recoveries. In Cu bioleaching operations from porphyry copper deposits extraction of only five and 15 per cent with maximum of 40 per cent are reached. This means that 60–95 per cent of the resource is not exploited. Consequently, any metal not extracted will end up in the waste material, therefore increasing the risk of environmental pollution. This inefficiency is mainly due to the use of element concentrations for decision-making on the daily basis of a mining operation (eg cut-off ore grade, acid-base accounting – ABA). If, instead, quantitative mineralogical and geochemical data together with information on the bioleaching behaviour of the ore assemblage (the biogeometallurgical approach), is used for decision-making right from the beginning of the exploitation, higher recoveries and less environmental impact can be achieved, ie an increase in sustainability can be reached.CITATION:Dold, D, 2016.
