The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,' obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. A PHASE diagram showing boundary curve and quantity of liquid in the two-phase region was determined for a mixture of natural gas and natural gasoline in the region of its critical conditions. The tempera-tures and pressures of phase measurements were in the range of 85° to 212° F. and 1300 to 2600 lb, per sq. in., respectively, with the critical conditions at 169.5° F. and 2615 lb. per sq. in. abs, Color phenomena were observed in the region of the boundary curve from 102° to 192° F. Approximate densities of the single-phase and two-phase regions and analysis of the system are included. Boundary curves between the single-phase and the two-phase regions have been determined for several binary mixtures containing hydro-carbons. 2,3,4,6,7,10,11,12,14 These investigators did not report the relative amounts of liquid and vapor within the two-phase region. The equilib-rium values obtained from the dew-point and bubble-point data can be used to compute the lines showing percentage of liquid on the pressure-temperature phase diagrams but the positions of the lines near the critical temperature and pressure are uncertain. Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha' within the two-phase area but not in, the region of the critical temperature and pressure. The bubble-point and dew-point lines, as well as the percentage liquid lines within the two-phase region, were determined by visual observations in glass apparatus.

[The following notes of observations made during a visit of a few days in the month of October, 1886, which was cut short by a sudden summons East, are offered, in spite of their incomplete and tentative character, in the hope that they may aid the members of the Institute, in their coming visit to this region, to a clearer understanding of the general geological conditions under which the ore-bodies occur.] The Butte mining region lies in a sort of a depression in the mountains which is drained by Silver Bow creek and its various tributaries. On the east it is bounded by high north and south ridges of granite, and on the west by lower ridges, also running north and south, which, as far as examined, were found to consist of rhyolite. High mountains also inclose the depression on the north and south, but at a greater distance than the more immediate bounding ridges on the east and west, the distance between which is hardly more than six miles.

Alan Stanley (Titanium Dioxide Analysis of Maclntyre Ore by Specific Gravity, P. 971) is currently head of the General Metallurgical Group of the National Lead Co. He has been with National Lead since 1946, after serving with the USAAF as a first lieutenant of engineers during World War II. A native New Yorker, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Since joining National Lead he has been a flotation supervisor, in the high tension pilot plant, and done sinter testing. He is an AIME member and presented one other paper before the Institute, Sintering Characteristics of Minus 65 and 20 Mesh Magnetite. Stanley plays the piano in his leisure moments.

I TOLD you above that you should save the melted material that you extracted by smelting the ore. In substance this is copper, lead, silver, and perhaps gold, but all are like substances mixed in one body without any distinction. Now if you wish to separate these and to reduce them to their pure qualities, it is necessary to proceed with each one according to its own methods. Now in this method of separating lead in order to extract the silver and gold from the copper, it is necessary to return to the smelting and to follow one of two methods.* The first is to smelt it again with the addition of lead or lead ore, and to make it all run through the channel into the large forehearth that was made in front of the blast furnace, and, as it cools off, proceed to remove layer by layer with the fork, as I told you before and as you did the first time, until the work lead is reached. Then you assay what you have extracted and see whether it contains silver. If you consider that it has enough per hundred to justify the expense, return it again to the smelting. Continue to do this until you have extracted all the unctuousness and the work lead still remains. If it contains little or no silver, you must be satisfied with your work; otherwise return it again to smelt, always accompanying it with lead or galena and do as you did the other times until it

FOR blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flame make their use safer than that of non-permissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless. The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.1 This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district.

The disorientations between s?nall grains, whose growth has been arrested at an early stage of recrys-tallization, and the deformed matrix in cold-rolled aluminum single crystals were determined using transmission Kikuchi line and electron diffraction patterns. The orientations of the recrystallized grains were found to be random, and the disorientations of these grains with the matrix weve found to be intermediate to large. This leads to the conclusion that the observed vecrystallization began in small areas of large disorientation present in the cold-worked structure. heavily cold-worked thin sections of aluminunz single crystals and of polycrystalline aluminum and nickel were produced directly by a mechanical technique. The specinlens thus prepared were heated with the electron beam to bring about vecrystallization during observation in the electron microscope. Motion pictures taken du.ring heating and the electvon, microg.raphs taken both before and aftev heating allowed the recrystallization process to be traced to its ovigin. Re cvystallized grains originated in very s,mall regions of the cold-worked structure and developed through rapid migration of high-angle boundaries. The boundaries either were present as such in the matrix or were formed out of dense dislocation networks. SIGNIFICANT advances have been made in recent years in the study of nucleation of recrystallization using the technique of transmission electron microscopy of thin metal foils. Bollman1 in a study of heavily rolled polycrystalline nickel found support for the Cahn-Cottrell2,3 theory of nucleation. According to this theory nuclei form by the initially slow growth of subgrains formed through polygonization. During this initial period of slow growth (the incubation period) the migrating boundary of the subgrain increases its disorientation with the cold-worked matrix and thereby increases its mobility to become a rapidly migrating high-angle boundary. Bailey4,5 investigated the annealing behavior of several metals deformed both in tension and by rolling and concluded that recrystallization took place through the migration of high-angle boundaries. With low deformations these boundaries were present in the metal before deformation. With high deformation it was not possible to tell whether the boundaries were pieces of the original grain boundaries or were produced either during deformation or by polygonization during ameal- ing. Direct observation during heating of metal foils indicated that subgrains form by polygonization and grow at an uneven rate. The grain size obtained decreased with decreasing foil thickness indicating that the foil surface resists boundary motion. Votava,6 in heating stage experiments on rolled copper, observed nuclei to appear suddenly and grow in jumps of differing magnitude. However, he found no special dislocation configurations where the nuclei appeared. Fujita,7 as a result of a study of subgrain growth in heavily worked aluminum, concluded that the boundary of a recrystallized grain initially forms from the boundary of a group of subgrains. This occurred by a process of deposition of vacancies and dislocations in the group boundary as the boundaries within the group disappear. HU8,9 directly observed a similar process in heating stage experiments on 70 pct rolled Si-Fe single crystals. The growth of subgrains appeared to proceed by a coalescence mechanism. The observed fading away of the boundary between two subgrains was explained by the moving out of dislocations from the disappearing boundary into the connecting or intersecting boundaries around the subgrains. The subgrain size and degree of disorientation with the surrounding structure were thus increased. With the increase in disorientation occurred a corresponding increase in boundary mobility, which eventually allowed the boundary to migrate rapidly. This process was observed to occur within "microbands" consisting of parallel narrow segments disoriented by a few degrees present in the as-rolled structure. The conclusion of Rzepski and Montuelle10 that growth is preceded by the coalescence of blocks through disappearance of their common boundaries supports this view. In contrast to Hu's coalescence model for nucleation were the conclusions of Walter and ~och.""~ Working with the same material as Hu, of the same orientation and rolled to the same reduction, they concluded that nucleation occurred by the Cahn-Cottrell mechanism. They observed, in agreement with Hu, that recrystallization began in the "microband" regions which they referred to as "transition" bands. Bartuska13 studied subgrain growth in heavily rolled nickel using a beam heating method in the electron microscope. He concluded that nuclei for recrystallization form from the largest most perfect subgrains present in the cold-worked structure by rapid intermittent migration of parts of subboundaries. THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remain¬ing to schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

INTRODUCTION The meaning of cash flow has already been defined as after-tax earnings available for use by the corporation or business. It is therefore apparent that a significant part of mineral economic evaluation is concerned with correct and accurate computation of taxable income under existing tax laws, and the proper treatment of tax allowances and deductions. The various methods of depreciation, depletion, and amortization are all means whereby the investor can earn back or recover, before taxes are imposed, the investments made for purposes of doing business or for the production of income. Each of these three types of tax deduction are applied to different investment items such as property, equipment, buildings, research, etc. The cost of buildings, equipment, machinery, and transportation equipment are representative of capitalized business costs that must be recovered by depreciation over the life of the asset. The property investment costs of acquiring natural resources such as minerals, oil and gas, and standing timber are examples of investment costs that may be recovered by depletion. Several other capitalized business costs, such as research expenses and trademark expenses, may be recovered by amortization. The term "capitalized" means that the in- vestment cost is not deducted as an operating expense in the year that it is incurred, but is spread out over a period of years through depreciation, depletion, or amortization deductions according to lawful schedules. Of course, any capitalized cost can only be deducted once. The other costs of doing business which are not capitalized, such as labor and operating costs, are said to be "expensed," i.e., they are written off for tax purposes in the year they occur. DEPRECIATION Depreciation, according to US tax law, is a deduction from taxable income permitted as a "reasonable allowance for the exhaustion, wear and tear of property out of its use or employment in a business." The original cost of the property is the usual basis for determining depreciation. Since depreciation write-off is applied over the useful life of the asset, the first step is to determine the estimated useful life or its allowable depreciable life. These two lives may or may not be the same. No average life is applicable to all types of depreciable assets under different conditions or in different types of business. It is the taxpayer's responsibility to determine the useful life of the asset according to his own operating conditions and experience, within the guidelines set by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Class Life Depreciation Range (ADR) System permits the taxpayer to choose from a range of depreciable lives at 20% below or above the present guideline life. The second step required in calculating depreciation is to determine an estimated salvage value for the asset. The salvage value is an estimate, made at the time of acquisition, of the amount of money which can be realized by the sale of the asset at the end of its useful life. The four depreciation methods most widely used in the US are: (1) the straight-line method, (2) the declining balance method (double declining balance), (3) sum of the years - digits method, and (4) units of production method. Straight-Line Depreciation Method The straight-line depreciation method is the simplest for calculating depreciation. The depreciation for each year is determined by subtracting the estimated salvage value from the first cost of the asset and dividing the result by the years of life. The method gives equal annual deduction over the depreciable life. Salvage value equal to or less than 10% of the first cost may be ignored. Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the U.S. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and airways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof became the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight, movements that are, frequently, hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned, the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 20 ft or more. SUFFICIENT testing has been performed with the Dutch State Mines Cyclone for thickening and desliming flotation feed at the concentrator of the National Lead Co., Tahawus, N. Y., to prove its application for this work. It is the purpose of this article to present some of the test results, operational details and advantages of cyclone thickening and classification. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Frank R. Milliken, assistant manager of the titanium division.l The present flowsheet for the recovery of ilmenite consists in grinding the crushing plant product in four open-end rod mills in closed circuit with mechanically vibrating screens to approximately -20 mesh. The screen undersize is treated in Crockett magnetic separators which produce three products: magnetic concentrate, nonmagnetic tailing containing ilmenite and gangue, and a Crockett slime overflow. The non- magnetic tailing is classified into eight sizer spigots products and a classifier overflow. The spigot sand products are tabled separately to produce a rough ilmenite concentrate, a middling product and a tailing. The table middlings are returned to Crockett feed. The table concentrate is dewatered and dried and further concentrated on Wetherill magnetic separators to produce the finished ilmenite concentrate.

THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it became important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determin; ing whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state. Analysis of Tintic Ores These chemical and mineralogical determinations showed the silver to be present as native silver, argento jarosite, argentite, and combined or inherent in the tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, cerussite, anglesite, mimetite, malachite, iron oxide and occluded in the quartz. Careful microscopic work would probably show other forms in small amounts, such as the halide silver minerals and some of the antimony sulfide combinations. The tabulation of the analyses of the various products (Table 1) shows no evidences of fixed ratios of silver to any particular base metal.

Tsumeb has added a chapter to its absorbing history with the beginning of copper smelting operations this month. This development will be followed shortly by another one when lead smelting and refining plants go on the line next year. In our own milieu these events would be common- place enough (although a new lead smelter certainly would be cause for wonder), but in the sparsely settled remote regions of northern South West Africa they are a dramatic industrial expansion. They are also, however, a sound businesslike extension of policies which have marked the tenure of Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. The historical data given in Table I are a drab listing of factual bones without the corporeal splendor which should surround the denouement of the Tsumeb bonanza. When Sir Francis Galton traversed the country, his was an expedition which was in keeping with the then blooming era of heroic explorations. The Otavi highlands in the interior were unexplored and the reception of the natives uncertain. While the exploratory work was in progress during the turn of the century the Hottentots and Hereros were successively in open bloody rebellion. The suppression of these uprisings, particularly the Hereros, by German soldiers so decimated the tribes that a labor shortage ensued for many years, hampering the development of the colony. To these troubles may be added difficulties In obtaining mining supplies. However, there should have been no shortage of meat from wild game judging by conditions prevailing even today.

THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equipment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Eveleth Taconite Co. was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi Range. Its Thunderbird mine is located mid-way between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minn. The program for blasting restraints here is unique not only on the Mesabi Range but possibly in the world. The ore is a hard siliceous taconite. Its structure varies from bedded to massive with prominent vertical jointing. The jointing of the top or outcrop of the orebody is a challenge for the blasting practices as it is the source of an estimated 75% of the secondary breakage.

THE following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. PURPOSE OF THE INTELLIGENCE TESTS Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby;
