At the University Club, New York, Jan. 23, Chairman George E. Hale and other officers of the National Research Council, gave a dinner to officers of the national engineering and other societies. About thirty persons were present, including officers of the National Research Council, the four Founder Societies, American Society for Testing Materials, Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc., Illuminating Engineering Society, United Engineering Society, and Engineering Foundation. Letters were received from the Western Society of Engineers, which also had been invited. Gano Dunn, vice-chairman of National Research Council, was toastmaster. The proposed permanent organization of the National Research Council and possible methods of connection with the national engineering societies, either directly or through Engineering Foundation, were outlined. It was suggested that not only the four Founder Societies be represented in the Engineering Division of National Research Council, but also that the other national engineering societies be admitted to membership. It was proposed that the Engineering Division should have a chairman who should be an engineer of wide reputation and of the highest professional attainments who should devote his whole time to the establishment and development of the Division. Methods of organizing industrial research were discussed. At a subsequent meeting of the National Research Council, an invitation was issued to each of the national societies to form a research committee encouraging that committee to become active in the promotion of research within its respective field. Due recognition is to be given each committee in the general organization of the National Research Council. Dr. H. M. Howe, in a very interesting and comprehensive address, told of much important work that had been clone by the various sections of the Research Council, as that of mechanical engineering in developing the often rather nebulous devices for helping win the war and putting them in such form that they could be of direct use to the military service. The section on metallurgy, till lately under Bradley Stoughton and now under G. H. Clevenger, did much valuable work in the improvement of helmets and body armor and made very extensive ballistic tests with refractory steels for this purpose. Important work was done in investigating the fatigue of metals and results of great moment were achieved. The committee on ferro-alloys, under J. E. Johnson, Jr., did important work in effecting economy of manganese in steel manufacture with a view to reducing the necessity for importation of manganese ore, thus releasing ships for other purposes. , The section on electric welding has accomplished valuable results in the development of electric welding for ships, a new branch of industry of very great promise.

THE development in the Gulf Coastal Plain for the year 1923 was entirely devoid of any spectacular feature and was considerably less than that of 1922. No large fields were discovered and the principal advances lay in the extension of the old fields and the finding of a new dome and other possible producing structures, which, however, so far, have given only small wells. While the production of some fields, such as those at Hull and Orange, was materially increased at times by comparatively large wells, the output as a whole shows a marked decrease over that of the preceding year. This note is presented in order to call attention to a newly developed laboratory apparatus that appears to have interesting possibilities for the study of lost circulation of the pressure-parting type, for a more realistic evaluation of sealing materials for this type of loss, and for investigation of other aspects of hydraulic fracturing. A study of lost circulation, conducted jointly by operating divisions of the Gulf Oil Corp. and the Gulf Research & Development Co., has been in progress for the past few years. Earlier phases of the study dealt with mechanical factors contributing to loss of returns in laminar type sediments.' One aspect of this type of loss which has been widely discussed in the literature and elsewhere concerns the geometry of the fractures into which such losses occur. This subject is not merely a philosophical one, but has an important bearing on procedures for combating lost circulation difficulties and on other well operations. The further course of the collaborative studies previously mentioned has produced some information on this subject which, though limited in amount, is believed to be significant. In several typical cases of lost circulation in laminated shale and sand formations, the wells have been surveyed with instruments2,3 capable of detecting the points of loss with considerable accuracy. These wells were located in the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, in the Texas Panhandle, and in the Rocky Mountain area. In each of these instances the loss was shown to be occurring at some distance removed from the bottom of the hole and sharply confined to a very narrow interval, less than 1 ft in thickness. It is rather difficult to imagine that fractures of a vertical nature' would be of the limited extent indicated by the surveys in these wells. Furthermore, the high rates of loss at relatively low pressure differentials observed in some of these instances together with the narrow intervals involved would appear to require the radial flow pattern which would be associated with a more or less horizontal fracture plane. In view of the foregoing observations and records of successful squeeze cementing operations, in attempting to construct a laboratory apparatus For simulating pressure induced lost circulation, it was decided that the design should be based on a horizontal type of fracture. It was realized that5,6 Vhe production of horizontal fractures in a formation with non-penetrating fluid requires some mechanism for transmitting vertical components of the hydraulic forces to the plane of parting. This was accomplished, as will be evident in the description of the apparatus that follows, by providing recesses in the wall of the borehole which are believed to be representative of wellbore configuration found in Gulf Coast wells. The possible influence of such borehole irregularities on both pressure fracturing and the treatment of lost circulation appears to have been neglected in many studies of these subjects. It is believed that the present apparatus, incorporating features that take into account some of the factors mentioned, will provide means of gaining a further understanding of pressure induced fracturing and possibly for more realistically evaluating the numerous sealing agents, particularly the non-time-setting materials employed in treating the pressure-parting type of loss. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The test cell used in the laboratory investigations is shown in Fig. 1. A schematic diagram of the entire system is shown in Fig. 2.

The effect of alkali sulfates in promoting the sul-fation of nickel and copper in a bulk sulfide flota -tion concentrate by fluidized bed roasting has been studied in the laboratory, and it was shown that the various alkali sulfates promote sulfation to approximately the same extent. The sulfation of a mixture of synthetically prepared iron and nickel oxide and of nickel ferrite has also been studied. Nickel sulfation was promoted by high ratios of Fe:Ni and by the presence of sodium sulfate. THE work described in this paper was a continuation of earlier studies into the role of alkali sulfates in promoting the sulfation roasting of nickel sulfides1,2 in an endeavor to determine how the system was affected by the presence of compounds of iron and copper. The earlier work1 showed that, in the sulfation of NiO at 680°C, the reaction was limited by the formation of an impermeable film of nickel sulfate on the oxide surface. The relative effect of the various alkali sulfates in promoting nickel sulfation varied in the order: Li > Na >Cs > Rb > K A study of alkali sulfate/ nickel sulfate interactions at high temperatures showed that the promoting action was due to the fact that the nickel sulfate product layer sintered and agglomerated only when the more active additives were present. This resulted in the formation of discontinuities in the nickel sulfate layer so that diffusion of the sulfating gases to the NiO surface was no longer impeded and the reaction could proceed to completion. A similar explanation was used for the observation that sodium and lithium sulfates promote the oxidation of NiS to NiO at temperatures below 750°C since small amounts of nickel sulfate were formed during oxidation.2 It was of interest to study the effect of alkali sulfates on the sulfate roasting of a sulfide flotation concentrate which is typical of material treated commercially. In order to control temperature it is essential to roast sulfides in a fluidized bed and this technique was therefore used, although the batchwise operation of a small-scale laboratory reactor does not reproduce all conditions which prevail in full-scale continuous plant. The results obtained are therefore only comparative, and cannot be used for predicting the optimum conditions for metal extraction. The sulfation of synthetically prepared mixed oxides of nickel + copper and nickel + iron and of nickel ferrite was also studied to evaluate the relative effects of alkali sulfates with more complex systems. SULFATION ROASTING OF A SULFIDE FLOTATION CONCENTRATE The bulk sulfide flotation concentrate used in this work contained 7.92 pct Ni, 1.74 pct Cu, 35.66 pct Fe, and 31.28 pct S. The sulfide minerals present in order of abundance were pyrrhotite FeS, pyrite FeS2, pentlandite (FeNi)S, and chalcopyrite CuFeS2. Two samples described as coarse and fine were used. The coarse sample, which was a flotation concentrate (58 pct plus 300 mesh), was ground to 100 pct minus 350 mesh to produce the fine sample. Before roasting, the sample of sulfide concentrate was agglomerated by wetting witli a solution of the alkali sulfate (or water), thoroughly mixing, and drying at 110°C. This gave a cake which was gently crushed and screened, the -18 +100 mesh fraction being used for fluidized bed roasting. A similar-size fraction had been used by the authors in pilot plant work with a 4-in.-diam fluidized bed reactor.' In this work it was found that the molar ratio of additive to the total iron + nickel + copper content of the sulfide sample should be adjusted to a value of approximately 0.06, as this was the optimum amount necessary for nickel sulfation. Experimental. The fluidized bed reactor consisted of a quartz tube approximately 60 cm long and 30 mm in diameter resting in a vertical tube furnace. The sulfide bed (30 g) was supported on a bed of -4 +12 mesh quartz particles 3 cm high, which rested on a sintered quartz disc welded to the tube. The temperature of the furnace was controlled with a variable transformer to give a final bed temperature of 680°C. The bed was fluidized with air or mixtures of air + 10 pct v/v SO2, at a total apparent gas velocity of 60 to 65 cm per sec at 680°C. Tinsley Oil Field.—Mississippi joined the oil-producing states when on Sept. 13, 1939, the Union Producing Company's G. C. Woodruff well No. 1, sec. 13, T. 10 N., R. 3 W., Yazoo County, was completed after drilling plug at 4540 ft. in the Woodruff sand of the Eutaw formation of Cretaceous, producing 300 bbl. per day of 34.4" gravity oil through a ¼-in. choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 80 to 1 and bottom-hole pressure of 2045 lb. This was the discovery well in the Tinsley oil field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4567 ft. and no salt water was encountered. The sand underlies the Selma chalk formation. Nine producing oil wells and one dry hole were drilled and completed by the end of 1939. Two producing sands have been found in the Eutaw and a third sand in the top of the Tuscaloosa formation, called the Woodbine sand in Louisiana and Texas. Faulting is an important factor in the Tinsley field. Total oil production has been approximately 250,000 bbl. from the nine flowing wells. Total depth to top of productive zone was 4540 ft.; to bottoms of productive wells, 4580 ft. Net thickness of the producing formation is 20 to 40 ft., and its porosity is 24 per cent. The deepest zone tested was the Tuscaloosa, in which the depth of hole was 6112 feet. Six hundred and forty acres has been proved for oil production. Jackson Gas Field.—The Jackson gas field has shown a steady decline in the number of wells but the pressure has been maintained. This field is a perfect example of a water-driven field and the time of wells going to salt water is predictable. Five wells were drilled in the Jackson field, of which only one produced. Amory Gas Field.—Interest was renewed in the Amory gas field, where a new well was started in the fall of 1939. Geological Formations.—The deepest well drilled in 1939 was the Willmut Gas and Oil Company's Cleve Love S. F. Johnson No. 1, sec. 29, T. 6 N., R. 1 W., Hinds County. This well encountered the Lower Cretaceous, Trinity series from 3770 to 6422 ft.; Lower Mesozoic from 6422 to 6484 ft. The geological correlations and nomenclature of the formations in Mississippi are shown in the accompanying strati-graphic section.

Computer simulations have been carried out using one of the models. These show the effect on the recycling of the notional metal of a wide range of possible future values of world market price and demand for the metal.

Probability sizing, a fairly recent development in the field of particle separation, is now under investigation to determine its value to the mining industry. The method employed is probability sizing through a vibrating network of decreasing screen openings. While probability sizing is not new, the possibility of using it for coarse, highly abrasive ores at high tonnage rates has only recently appeared to merit practical consideration. The advantages of probability sizing vs. conventional screening methods are: (1) reduced space requirements for a high capacity unit, (2) fewer moving parts, (3) more versatile product sizing selection, (4) reduced maintenance requirements, and (5) lower power consumption. Screening is a necessary part of virtually every crushing circuit. At some stage in the process, particle separation becomes a controlling factor in the operation. The basic type of screen in use today is the vibrating unit, which usually employs a mechanical vibrator of one type or another to obtain sizing and material transportation across the screen surface. The vibrating screen has its limitations and inherent problems. Operators must live with: (1) high maintenance — worn rods, screen cloth, spacers, cross members, chutes, etc., (2) low capacity in relation to floor space requirements, (3) extreme noise levels, (4) high power consumption, and (5) structural problems in the screens and supporting steelwork. All plant operators have become tolerant of these drawbacks through the years, and little innovation has been developed in screening. The vibrating screens in use today incorporate improved metals, more efficient power sources, better lubricants, and increased manufacturing skill, but the basic machine itself remains unchanged. Screening is a relatively small part of most plants' operating expenditures and gets relatively little attention from research and development. The HiProb sizer is a new approach to the problem of particle separation on a high tonnage basis. Developed by Dr. Fredrik Mogensen (president of Fred-rik Mogensen, A. B. of Djursholn, Sweden), this unit has found its primary acceptance in the sizing of wet or dry materials in the fine ranges. Climax has been working cooperatively with Mine and Smelter Supply Company, the United States licensee, on the adaptation of the sizer to obtain consistent recovery at a high tonnage rate on a — 3/8-in. separation. This was a new application for the sizer and opened up a whole new field of problems. Dr. Mogensen's machine utilizes the control of normal probability of falling particles and is designed to eliminate some of the undesirable features of vibrating screens mentioned earlier. The machine is light, compact, consumes less power than conventional screens and has a low noise level. PRINCIPLES Probability sizing is a process designed to allow solid particles to segregate with a high ratio of the materials reporting into their respective size fractions with a minimum amount of misplaced particles. Sizing is defined in this paper as segregation of dry solid particles into fractions of comparable sizes. Probability is usually estimated as the ratio of the number of ways an event might occur vs. the total number of allowable ways. The probability process described depends upon the fact that particles falling through a network will segregate across the sizing surface even though all openings are larger than the particles. The degree of segregation is dependent upon the particle size and the trajectory applied by the sizing network to each falling particle. Specifically, the process utilizes a maze made up of screen cloth to control the path of a particle in free fall as illustrated in Fig. 1. The usefulness of this probability sizing process is dependent upon the degree of efficiency of an effective maze. Primarily, a maze must be extremely flexible to meet the multi-faceted nature of solid particles and, at the same time, the degree of control must be reproducible so that a desired separation is predictable. Dr. Fredrik Mogensen has formulated a maze that is not only flexible and easily controlled, but, mote importantly, easily adaptable to a working machine.

THAT the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First; each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal; in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. THE term "electrocapillary amalgamation" is used in this paper to designate amalgamation processes that depend upon electrocapillary phenomenon; i.e., the action of an electric current upon the surface tension of mercury at the contact with aqueous solutions. Electro-capillary amalgamation is selected as a name for these processes because the electrocapillary phenomenon has been found to be the effective agent in the use of sodium amalgam, as well as in the various processes using an electric current from a source outside of the amalgam. Amalgamation processes that depend upon supplying an electric current to the amalgam from an outside source, such as batteries and generators, have previously been called electrical amalgamation processes. There has been a tremendous amount of experimental work done on amalgamation processes involving the use of an electric current, as shown by the large number of patents issued on these processes: the earliest in 1885 and the latest in 19341. Regardless of all the experimental work, the fundamental principles causing the operation of electrocapillary amalgamation processes have not been described. The explanation usually given is that an electric current keeps the amalgam bright and clean. Patent No. 328532 states: It is well known that when amalgam plates are used for collecting gold and silver from their ores the surfaces of these plates are liable to become tarnished or sickened by certain substances contained in the ores or in the current of water which is employed to carry the ore over the plates, and that in this condition they are unfitted for amalgamating the particles of gold and silver. To prevent this and to keep the surfaces of the amalgamation plates always bright and in a better condition for catching and amalgamating the particles of gold and silver I employ electricity in the following manner:. . . IN the last analysis, two basic factors influence the use of metals and alloys; namely, cost and adaptability to the use under consideration. These are so interrelated that to study the properties of metals or alloys without considering the prices and price trends is quite illogical. Lead has been a cheap metal, selling in 1932 for the extremely low price of 2.56 cents per pound. The cheapness of lead in the past was not due to a particularly abundant supply of the element in the earth's crust but rather to the ease with which it was won from its ores and to the chemical stability of the metal, preventing its dissipation. Today, however, our modern economy has caught up with the distribution of lead in the earth's crust and the price is largely dictated by the supply of concentrates readily available for smelting, and which can be placed quickly upon the market. The demand for lead, particularly in times of stress, has brought the price up to the level of 19 cents in the United States, where the price is controlled by Government decree, and the price has been even higher in the world markets. The higher price for lead has changed the uses for this metal to a marked degree, driving it out of the fields where it is not essential. Lead articles of great antiquity have been found in Egyptian ruins, proving the stability of the element and indicating the basic simplicity of its metallurgy. It is probable that lead was the first

IN the closing months of 1936 the copper industry gave every evidence that it was at last on the threshold of an improved era. At the beginning of the year prices stood at 9 1/4¢, which in itself was a great improvement over prices prevailing for the three previous years. Industry generally was showing signs of moving forward in this country, and business was definitely good in certain foreign quarters. The threat of war and prep-arations for rearmament in Europe and Asia acted as a further stimulus purchasing. By midsummer the situation had so improved and stocks to been so reduced that the cartel of foreign producers (including American producers with foreign mines) decided to increase the produc-tion quota to 75 per cent on Aug. 1. Large-scale buying gave continued strength to the price and by Oct. 1 the quota was increased to 80 per cent, and again on Oct. 15, to 85 per cent. Notwithstanding this the price of copper continued its advance and on Nov. 1, with stocks declining con-tinuously, the cartel increased operations to 95 per cent, then to 105 per cent on Nov. 5. In the meantime the domestic producers, because of the great increase in home consumption, had increased their production by nearly one-half. At the close of the year copper sold at 120 per pound, and since the turn of the present year has reached 170. This rapid increase has not been wholly justified. Much of the increase was due to the legitimate demands of recovering industry, but rearmament orders plus accumulation of reserve stocks in case of war, purchases in anticipation of labor strikes and purely speculative activities on the London Metal Exchange accounted for the balance. Certainly in view of the state of industry and the general world price level, it appears unnecessarily high. Talk of a copper shortage is sheer nonsense, the recent condition in the market being created by overbuying, leaving but a small volume for speculative supplies. It takes some months for an increase in mine output to reach the market, but production is again overtaking apparent consumption, stocks have begun to increase, and this, together with the reopening of many small

THE Larap iron deposits, 125 miles east of Manila, are the biggest high-grade iron deposits in the Philippines, and have in seven years produced nearly 4 million tons of 6o per cent ore. Magnetic surveying followed by churn and diamond drilling cheaply developed a score of million tons. The ore zone is a wedge of metamorphic rocks in fresh, Miocene sediments overlain by agglomerates, which seem to have filled a river valley eroded in the sediments. A mild overthrust of the competent agglomerates crumbled the shale in front. Solutions gradually turned it into more competent hornfels and deposited pyrite, then magnetite and pyrite in the pores. As the temperature rose large bodies of magnetite with some pyrite were deposited by replacement and in open cavities in tensional areas of overthrust shears. At still higher temperature magnetite and calcium-magnesium silicates formed other bodies in similar cavities, and finally the thrust zone was invaded by syenite porphyry, causing high-temperature alteration products. Possibly, as temperature abated, more high-grade ore was deposited. The complicated faulting indicates dynamic, chronological and spatial changes of mineralization rather than zoning in a static system. Noncommercial copper, molybdenum and some gold accompanied the iron mineralization. In the thirties the Philippines gained a justified reputation as a country of considerable mineral wealth. Traces of Chinese workings show that these earliest travelers and traders had in a small way exploited the latent gold resources in the Islands. The Spaniards continued this for centuries, but did not succeed in establishing any steady mining industry. Modern technology was required to get it started. The rapid development in the last decade before the war got its impetus from several financial factors, the return to sugar growers of previously collected taxes, the influx of Spanish capital during the civil war in [ ] Spain, the influx of Chinese capital when the Japanese started their "China incident," and others. Directly or indirectly much of this capital reached the mining industry; in particular, gold mining. Out of the turmoil of an exceptional mining boom emerged a sufficient number of good and well managed gold properties to send the production to a level above that of any single state in the United States at the time. This chapter will outline the operating procedures at Freeport Kaolin Co.5 kaolin mining operations in Georgia, with emphasis on explaining new techniques recently introduced to reclaim mined-out areas for reforestation. Kaolin is found in the central Georgia area (See Fig. 1) in lenticular, sedimentary deposits of high purity. The beds are Cretaceous in age and vary from 4 to 60 ft in thickness, under a cover of sedimentary overburden ranging from 5 to 150 ft. The kaolin beds contain the mineral kaolinite (a hydrous aluminum silicate) and have a particle-size distribution ranging from about 20µ to the submicron level and averaging about 60% below 2µ. The only contaminants in the deposits are coarse mica, quartz particles, and minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. These kaolin deposits vary widely in quality from deposit to deposit and also vary within individual deposits. Some of the controlling quality specifications which are determined during exploration are viscosity in water suspension, optical brightness index as measured by reflectance, amenability to bleaching, and particle-size distribution. For this reason, only a small portion of the total kaolin reserves in the Georgia belt are suitable for wet processing for the present markets being served. Kaolin clays are selectively mined by different mechanical methods and are beneficiated by both wet and dry processing to produce a number of products used as fillers and coatings in the paper industry; fillers or additives in the paint, plastic, and rubber industries; and as basic raw materials for the ceramic industry. The State of Georgia is the largest kaolin producer in the United States, with 3,206,454 tons produced in 1966, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics. Freeport Kaolin Co’s processing plant is located in Gordon, Ga., about 20 miles east of Macon, Ga.

THE development of the Hauto power plant and the claims made by various engineers that electricity was more economical than steam for power purposes in and about the mines; led the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., in 1911, to conduct a test to ascertain the consumption of power used by a large steam hoisting engine. The question being one on which no reliable information could be found, and the opinion of various engineers differing to such an extent, it was decided that a test under actual operating conditions was necessary. This was arranged for at one of the collieries. The engine selected was a 30 by 60-in. (76.2 by 152.4-cm.) piston-valve engine of modern type, and comparatively new. The boiler plant from which the hoist received its power was about 600 ft. (182 m.) from the engine, the latter being fed by a 10-in. (25.4-cm.) steam line insulated with magnesia pipe covering. Two batteries of the boiler plant, aggregating 1200 hp., were cut off and fed into a separate steam line leading direct to the hoist engine. Steam auxiliaries, consisting of feed-water pump and blowers, were fed by the boilers in test, and their consumption charged against the hoist. A barrel weighing device was installed, as it was felt that this would be the most accurate way of determining the consumption of water. The fuel, No. 3 buckwheat, was carefully weighed, and every precaution was taken to make the test accurate in every particular. The test was run for 1 week, or a total of 168 hr. A record was kept of the number of trips hoisted or lowered, and continuous indicator cards were taken. One particular set of cards was taken with the hoist operating balanced, and also with the hoist operating with no counterweight other than the empty cage, the coal in the car being weighed. The speed of the hoist was taken by means, of a graphic recording instrument which registered the number of revolutions every 5 sec. From this record, speed-time curves were plotted.

THIS communication reports measurements of the densities of dilute liquid alloys of 0.1 and 0.5 pct Ag in Sn over temperature ranges of 170" and 210°C, respectively, above the melting point of pure tin (232°C). The work was earried out to provide accurate density data for some liquid diffusion studies performed by Davis.1 Densities were measured using a pycnometric technique established in this laboratory. Earlier papers2, 4 attest to the accuracy of ±0.05 pct and the reliability of the method. Tin, 99.999 pct pure, and silver 99.99 pct pure, were melted in a graphite crucible in a vacuum furnace and held at temperature for 10 hr to ensure homogenization. Ingots suitable for machining

Reservoir performance predictions based on laboratory core test data assume that fluid flow is laminar for the laboratory test. A study has been made to determine the validity of this assumption for laboratory tests on various types of porosity found in producing limestone formation. Data are presented which show that turbulence and slippage can occur during laboratory tests on hetero-geneous-type porosity limestones, thus causing serious errors in measured single-phase permeabilities and two-phase relative permeability characteristics. In single-phase flow tests it is possible to eliminate turbulence and correct for slippage or to eliminate both factors by controlling test conditions. It is not always possible to control test conditions and thereby eliminate turbulence and slippage in two-phase .flow tests. A correction method is presented which can be used to calculate the true two-phase laminar flow relative permeability characteristic even though furbulence and slippage exist. .INTRODUCTION It is customary to make use of Darcy's law and modifications of this law, together with laboratory data on formation core samples to predict the performance of producing reservoirs. Such predictions are based on an assumption that fluid flow is in the laminar or streamline region for the laboratory test. It was the purpose of this inves- tigation to determine the extent to which turbulent flow may occur in laboratory fluid flow tests on hetero-geneous porosity limestones. Considering that turbulent flow conditions might exist in some laboratory fluid flow tests, additional emphasis was placed on the development of a method to correct for turbulence when laminar flow conditions could not be attained. FLUID FLOW CONCEPTS FOR POROUS MEDIA The Influence of Pore Geometry on Fluid Flow One of the more important factors influencing fluid flow in porous media is the geometry of the pore space which includes such characteristics of the pores as size, shape, distribution, roughness, uniformity, etc. In general, oil- and gas-producing formations can be divided into two broad types on the basis of pore geometry. One has been called sandstone-type porosity media, which is characterized by a small range in pore size, uniformity in shape of the pores, smooth pore surfaces and a regular and uniform distribution of pores. The other type has been called heterogeneous porosity media and is usually limited to the dolomites and limestones. This type is characterized by a wide variation in the size, shape, and distribution of the pores and rough, irregular pore surfaces. It is therefore apparent that conditions are much more favorable for turbulent flow* in heterogeneous-type porosity media than in sandstone-type porosity media. Interrelationship Between Turbulence and Gas Slippage In studying the problem of turbulent flow in laboratory tests on porous media, it is necessary to be aware of the interrelationship between slippage and turbulence for gas flow. As a result of slippage or the Klinken-berg effecta, apparent perrneabilities to gas are greater than the true value because there is no stationary layer of gas in contact with the walls of the flow channels. Gas slippage decreases as the mean free path of the gas molecules decreases. Since the mean free path of any gas decreases with increasing density, increases in static pressure result in lower apparent gas permeabilities. However, a reduction in gas permeability can also be due to turbulence. Therefore, in studying only turbulent flow in porous media, it is necessary to hold gas density, and slippage, constant or to reduce slippage to a negligible value by operating at high static pressures. Presentation of Laminar and Turbulent Flow Data A graphical relationship between permeability and a pseudo-Reynolds number, N,, will be used to show the two types of fluid flow, i.e., laminar and turbulent. The usual graphical method for such a description has been the use of friction factor-Reynolds number charts4. On such a logarithmic diagram, the laminar region appears as a straight line having a slope of 45 degrees. As the friction factor decreases and the Reynolds number increases, the turbulent region is reached and appears as a deviation from the 45-degree slope line. In a paper by Abrahamson and Alexander concerning a series of correlations between electronic structure and property changes, it was hypothesized that each solute atom in a dilute solution had a characteristic volume of solvent atoms over which some form of electronic interaction occurred. From this description it is possible to picture the solute atoms as occurring in an ordered array for the most efficient arrangement. A recent review article2 has shown that some form of anomaly exists for a whole series of properties when dilute additions of tungsten are made to iron, of. Fig. 1. Any mechanism to fit one property must also be amenable to mechanisms for the other properties. The possibility of some structural change in this region appears to offer the best hope. The system chosen for investigation was the iron tungsten system. Zone-refined iron with zone-leveled tungsten additions were supplied by Materials Research Corp. as 3/8-in.-diam bars. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the structure. One-quarter inch specimens of each alloy were cold-rolled to 10-mil sheets, cleaned, punched to electron-microscope specimen-holder size, and annealed in vacuum for 2 hr at 800°C and 2 hr at 700°C followed by a furnace cool. The specimens were attached to a platinum wire and the specimen edge and wire were painted prior to thinning in a solution of 10 pct perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid. It was believed that if ordering were present due to electronic interactions the polishing procedure chosen would provide a simultaneous combination of chemical attack and electropolishing to exhibit the ordered structure. The chemical attack would be expected to penetrate those areas equidistant from the tungsten atoms, while the electropolishing would serve to "plane off" the volumes where the chemical attack had taken place. If one of the ordered tungsten planes were parallel to the specimen face at the edge of the thinned hole, a plate or micalike structure would be expected. A typical result of this polishing is shown in Fig. 2. Here a series of plates can be seen lying one upon the other. In several other specimens the plates parallel to the electron beam have been observed, behaving like slices of bread in a loaf. These edge views coupled with moire patterns indicate that the minimum plate thickness is 37 to 42A. This is equivalent to a concentration of 455 at. ppm of W if a simple cubic superlat-tice exists, or one tungsten atom every twelve iron atoms on the ordered plane. It was further noted that the base iron exhibited no signs of platelike structure. As the concentrations increased above 100 at. ppm W the amount of plate material increased.
