The variety of copper-ore to which these notes refer is cornparatively rare, and, so far as I am aware, has not been recorded hitherto as occurring in Ontario. Moreover, the rocks of this locality differ so much in nature and mode of occurrence from the orebearing rocks of the western United States, that a description of them may be interesting. A line drawn upon a map of the region of the great lakes from the mouth of the Severn river at the Southern end of Georgian Bay, following the Canadian shore northwestward, and leaving Manitoulin island to the south, will describe the boundary between the Archaean rocks lying north of it and the Silurian rocks southward.

A treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located at the center of a circular region surrounded by a radial discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility and porosity are uniform but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. The results are obtained by solving a pair of finite difference equations. The numerical solution to these equations is obtained using a digital computer. The results are compared with previously published, approximated analytical solutions to the same problem. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables studied include dimensionless time from '0.001 to 100 and storage capacity ratio from 0.001 to 1,000. The well behaves as if it were in an infinite reservoir for dimensionless times less than 0.25. Reservoir properties near the well can be estimated in the usual manner. An overlay technique is used to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves. It is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time tD at which a match occurs into the equation a = (0.000264 tk1/tD , µ1 cI)I/2 where kI/ I µI cI is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Several buildup curves are computed. These curves show that for early shut-in times, correct values for transmissibility are obtained from conventional analysis. However, erroneous values of static reservoir Pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION A mathematical treatment of the transient pressure response of a well located at the center of a region bounded by a circular discontinuity is given. Within a region (Fig. 20) the properties of both the rock and the fluid are considered to be constant on either side of the discontinuity. While these properties are considered constant, they may be different on opposite sides of the discontinuity. A discontinuity of this type could be a fluid-fluid contact or a sudden change in rock characteristics such as thickness, porosity or permeability. Analytical solutions to this problem are available. 1-3 However, they are so involved that they are of little practical use. An approximate solutionl is available but the range of times over which it is valid has not been specified. A numerical solution to a pair of finite difference equations is used to obtain the solution given in this paper. PREVIOUS WORK One of the first solutions to the problem was published by William Hurst.1 Hurst considered unsteady-state flow of fluids through two sands in series with different mobilities in each sand. He used Laplace transforms to obtain a solution for a single well located at the center of the circle enclosing the first of the two sands. Education is for the purpose of developing citizenship, and, if it is pursued for the additional purpose of preparing for a professional career, such as engineering, it is also directed to developing a knowledge of essential science, aptitude for the application of science to practical situations, and a knowledge of the industrial art in which the engineer will be engaged. The process of education required for engineering must of necessity extend beyond the classroom into industry. For that reason, the education of engineers should be divided as between the university and industry. Specialization in engineering should logically come as a result of experience in an industry. The student cannot take the time in a university, and, the university cannot teach the skills required to develop a specialist without sacrifice to the more essential broad purposes of formal education. In addition to talent in science, aptitude in the application of scientific fact, and knowledge of the industrial art, the engineer should possess certain personal qualities which are helpful in the pursuit of a professional career. Those personal qualities are: the ability to work as a partner in an enterprise, the ability to do jobs in a way whereby job performance is a means of gaining experience and increased responsibility, the capacity to write and speak in an understandable manner, and, a Proper regard for the "significance of answers." These pcrsOnal qualities may be of almost equal importance to acabemic accomplishments in the field of science. Development of such personal qualities are an essential part of the student's training in the university and in industry. They can be developed effectively through the leadership of instructors. Compulsory Education Nature played a mean trick On the human race when the evolutionary Process failed to develop in the individual a capacity to inherit knowledge. Were knowledge transmissible in a cumulative manner from generation to generation, mankind would be by inheritance wise beyond measure within a few generations. Then there would be little if any need for a "system of education." As matters stand, however, all must suffer the burden of starting life at the "zero " level of learning from which station each rises depending upon individual capacity to assimilate knowledge left of record by our predecessors and the individual effort exerted to compensate for Nature's failure to endow the offspring with intelligence. In the United States some degree of education is generally regarded as essential and necessary. Therefore, all citizens are subjected by law to an educational process covering the primary school age from six to sixteen years. Beyond the schooling required by law, many attend secondary schools, and beyond that, schools of higher learning. Our standard of living is at a level that permits an increasingly large fraction of the population the opportunity to go through all of the formal educational process. As a result, education in the colleges and universities has almost reached a mass production level. In spite of the high

The formation density logging tool provides a radioactivity measurement that yields formation densities in situ. The relationship between bulk density and porosity is well understood. With knowledge of grain and fluid densities, porosity may be computed from the indicated formation bulk densities in shale-free formations. The porosities thus determined may be used with a resistivity log for water-saturation determinations. One technique utilizes a density vs resistivity plut. A plot of density vs Sonic-log transit time is used for porosity determinations in shaly sands. This method is particularly suited to wells drilled with oil-base or salt muds. In shale-free formations, comparisons of density values nnd neutron-log readings are used to identify lithologr and, thus, to select appropriate values of grain density for porosity computations. Through the use of Formation Density, Sonic and neutron logs, the interpretation problems caused by complex matrix lithologies are simplified. Other applications of the Formation Density log are found in the identification of minerals in evaporite deposits and in yield determinations of "oil shales". INTRODUCTION Widespread field application has demonstrated that the measurement of formation density is a useful and revealing technique for well logging. Responding to the bulk density variations of the formation, the Formation Density log affords valuable data on the porosity, lithology and fluid content of the formations. Although not without its own limitations, the Formation Density tool may provide effective interpretation under conditions that hamper or preclude the use of other porosity devices. When used in conjunction with other devices, such as the Sonic or neutron, complex matrix conditions may be better understood, defined and evaluated. A previous paper' described the valuable contribution of the Formation Density tool in the logging of empty, or gas-filled, holes. The purpose of the present paper is to describe applications of the device in liquid-filled holes. THE FORMATION DENSITY TOOL The Formation Density tool was devised to measure the bulk densities of formations in situ. Actually, the device responds to electron density, but in the overwhelming majority of cases of interest, the electron density is very closely proportional to the bulk density. In other cases appropriate corrections can be made if necessary. Comparisons of log-derived densities with true densities for the more common matrix minerals are shown in Table 1. The tool consists of a gamma-ray source and detector mounted in a skid which, during the logging operation, is in contact with the borehole wall (see Ref. 1 for schematic). Gamma rays are emitted by the source and diffused through the formation. The number of diffused gamma rays reaching the detector at a fixed spacing from the source are counted. An increase in counting rate by the detector indicates a decrease in bulk density in front of the skid. Conversely, a decreased counting rate signifies an increase in bulk density. A measurement of hole diameter, between the face of the skid and that of the eccentering arm, is recorded simultaneously with the measurement of diffused gamma rays. Since the tool is a wall-contact device, the size of the borehole has little influence, provided good contact is maintained with the wall of the hole. Only in extremely large or small boreholes does the actual diameter become significant. However, for most accurate measurements the borehole size should be taken into account. Fig. 1 presents the departure curves for the conversion of counting rate to bulk density for liquid-filled holes of various sizes. It is of utmost importance that the skid maintain good contact with the wall of the hole. If, due to roughness or caving, there is mud between the skid and the formation, the tool will include in its response the relatively low-density mud, and the apparent density reading will be too low. Normally, permeable beds do not cave appreciably, so that reliable readings are usually available for zones of interest. Nevertheless, the caliper reading over the zone of interest should be examined for any wall roughness. When mud cake exists between the skid and the formation, the Formation Density log sees it as part of the formation. When thick mud cakes exist, a correction is required. INTRODUCTION Requirements for achieving economic slope stability in open pit mining must not only be met during the operating stages but in all preceding stages of mine development. In many operating mines little or no emphasis was ever placed on evaluating the stability of possible slopes during the exploration and planning stages. The purpose of this discussion is to emphasize the necessary considerations that should be made in all stages of development in order to achieve the safest and most economic pit slopes. The most economic slopes may not always be the safest slopes and it is incumbent upon the mine operators and engineers to achieve an optimal combination of economics and safety. The stability requirements outlined are based on the profit motive and are, therefore, practically oriented. Long-term basic research or theoretical studies are considered important only to the extent that they can be shown to have a definite payoff. Consideration will first be given to the information required for stability analysis, which can be determined during the exploration and evaluation stage, followed by further stability work necessary during the mine planning and layout stage. Particular emphasis is then placed on the operating stage in which blasting, dewatering, artificial stabilization, and slope failure are discussed. Lastly, the importance of a logical and orderly research procedure is stressed. EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION STAGE The purpose of the exploration and evaluation stage in the mining scheme is to find and delineate a potential orebody. Discovery and delineation commonly involve drilling tens and in many cases hundreds of boreholes. These boreholes, which may cost as much as $20.00 per foot of depth for a cored hole, are usually abandoned once drilling is completed. Stability evaluation for a potential open pit should begin at this stage by taking advantage of the existing boreholes. Rock and soil properties, as well as hydrologic parameters, may be obtained from both the borehole and the core. Seismic velocity and neutron probes may be used to log the borehole to obtain elastic moduli data. A borehole dilation jack may also be used to give backup information on the rock and soil elastic parameters. Use of a core orientation system can result in the determination of fault and joint frequency and distribution. Before splitting or otherwise disturbing the fresh core, qualitative evaluation

The increasing need for materials capable of withstanding higher operating temperatures for various applications such as gas turbine blading and other parts, rocket nozzles, and many industrial applications, has brought consideration of cemented carbide compositions. The well known usefulness of cemented carbides as tool materials is attributable to their ability to retain their strength and hardness at much higher temperatures than even complex alloys. However, it has been found that the temperatures encountered in cutting operations do not approach by several hundred degrees1 those involved in the applications mentioned above where the interest is in materials possessing strength and resistance to oxidation at temperatures of 1800°F and above. At these latter temperatures, the tool type compositions which are made up essentially of tungsten carbide are found to oxidize very rapidly and to produce oxidation products of a character which offer no protection to the remaining body. As a further consideration, the density of the tungsten carbide type compositions is high, from about 8.0 to 15.0. The refractory metal carbides as a class are the highest melting materials known as shown by Table 1 which summarizes the available data from the literature for the carbides of the elements which are sufficiently available for consideration for these uses. The density is also included in the table, since as mentioned above it is an important consideration in many of the applications for which the materials would be considered. It has been established that in the tool compositions the mechanism of sintering with cobalt is such as to result in a continuous carbide skeleton and that the properties of the sintered composition are thus essen- tially those of the carbide.2 On the hypothesis that this mechanism holds to a greater or less degree in cementing most of the refractory metal carbides with an auxiliary metal, it appears from Table 1 that titanium carbide compositions would offer possibilities for a high temperature material. Titanium carbide has extensive use for supplementing the properties of tungsten carbide in tool compositions. Although the literature contains several references to compositions containing only titanium carbide with an auxiliary metal,3,4,5,6 it may be inferred from the meager data that such compositions were deficient in strength and were considered to have poor oxidation resistance.7 Kieffer, for instance, reports the transverse rupture strength of a hot pressed TiC composition at 100,000 psi as compared to up to 350,000 psi for WC compositions. The work described herein was undertaken to determine the properties of compositions consisting of titanium carbide and an auxiliary metal and to improve the oxidation resistance of such compositions. It appeared possible that the inclusion of one or more other carbides with titanium carbide might improve the oxidation resistance and also that this might be more desirable than other means from the point of view of maintaining the highest possible softening point. Consideration of the available carbides in Table 1 suggests tantalum and columbium carbides because of their high melting points and general refractoriness. The work on improving oxidation resistance was concentrated on the addition of tantalum carbide or mixtures of tantalum and columbium carbide. The auxiliary metals used included cobalt, nickel and iron. It was also desired to learn the general physical properties of these compositions. Experimental Procedure The compositions used in this study were made by the usual powder metallurgy procedure applicable to cemented tungsten carbide compositions. The powdered carbide or carbides and auxiliary metal were milled together out of contact with air. In some cases cemented tungsten carbide balls and in other instances steel balls were used to eliminate any effect of tungsten carbide contamination. A temporary binder, paraffin, was then included in the mix and slugs or ingots were pressed with care to obtain as uniform pressing as possible. The ingots were presintered and the various shapes of test specimens were formed by machining, making the proper allowance for shrinkage during sintering. Thereafter the shapes were sintered in vacuum at temperatures of from 2800 to 3500°F. Final grinding to size was carried out by diamond wheels under coolant. The titanium carbide used contained a minimum of 19.50 pet total carbon and a total of 0.50 pet metallic impurities as indicated by chemical and spectrographic analysis. COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion of this paper has been of such volume and interest as to constitute in itself a sufficient excuse for the paper, even though the paper itself may have been as much in error as some of its critics have maintained. Mr. Howard does not appear to realize some very practical facts that the opponents of his theory have advanced. Among these are: the coarsely crystalline fracture of the nucleus of a transverse fissure, so different from the smooth fatigue break around it; the occurrence of fissures in large numbers in certain heats or rollings of rails, while other heats or rollings do not develop them; and the much smaller proportion of transverse fissures found in rails rolled .from reheated blooms as compared with direct-rolled rails. These facts are not explained by Mr.

This paper presents a correlation for predicting the behavior of a water cone as it builds from the static water-oil contact to breakthrough conditions. The correlation is partly empirical and involves dimensionless groups of reservoir and fluid properties and of production and well characteristics. The groups were deduced from the scaling criteria for the immiscible displacement of oil by water. The correlation is based on a limited amount of experimenfal data from a laboratory sand-packed model and on results from a computer program for a two-dimensional, incompressible system. Because the correlating groups are dimensionless, they can be used to estimate the performance of water coning cases not specifically considered in the correlation. However, despite its dimensionless nature, the correlation is not completely general and will not provide meaningful estimates of cone behavior in many situations. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The production of water from oil wells is a common occurrence which increases the cost of producing operations and may reduce the efficiency of the depletion mechanism and the recovery of reserves. We will deal with one cause of this water production, namely, coning. The coning of water into a producing well is caused by pressure gradients established around the wellbore by the production of fluids from the well. These pressure gradients can raise the water-oil contact near the well where gradients are most severe. Gravity forces that arise from fluid density differences counterbalance the flowing pressure gradients and tend to keep the water out of the oil zone. Therefore, at any given time, there is a balance between gravitational and viscous forces at points on and away from the completion interval. When the dynamic forces at the wellbore exceed gravitational forces, a cone of water will ultimately break into the well to produce water along with the oil. We can expand on this basic visualization of coning by introducing the concepts of stable cone, unstable cone and critical production rate. For instance, if a well is produced at a constant rate and the pressure gradients in the drainage system have become constant, a steady-state condition is reached. If, at this condition, the dynamic forces at the well are less than the gravity forces, then the water or gas cone that has formed will not extend to the well. Moreover, the cone will neither advance nor recede, thus establishing what is known as a stable cone. Conversely, if the pressure in the system is in an unsteady-state condition, then an unstable cone will continue to advance until steady-state conditions prevail. If the flowing pressure drop at the well is suffcient to overcome the gravity forces, the unstable cone will grow and ultimately break into the well. It is important to note that in a realistic sense, stable cones may only be "pseudostable" because the drainage system and pressure distribution generally change. For example, with reservoir depletion, the water-oil contact may advance toward the completion interval, thereby increasing chances for coning. As another example, reduced productivity due to well damage requires a corresponding increase in the flowing pressure drop LO maintain a given production rate. This increase in pressure drop may force an otherwise stable cone into a well. The critical production rate, well known in the literature, is the rate above which the flowing pressure gradient at the well causes water (or gas) to cone into the well. It is, therefore, the maximum rate of oil production without concurrent production of the displacing phase by coning. At the critical rate, a built-up cone is stable but is at a position of incipient breakthrough. Numerous papers have been published on critical rates. Some of the better known of these include the work of (1) Muskat and Wyckoff,' who first dealt with the coning problem; (2) Chaney, et al,' who developed expressions similar to those of Muskat but who presented results in a conven ient-to-use graphical form (the "Sun" method); and (3) Meyer and Garder,b hose analysis is based on radial-flow formulas. One assumption in critical production rate analyses is that the cone has built-up to just before its breakthrough into the well. But, these analyses reveal nothing directly about the time it takes for the cone to build up to this incipient breakthrough position. Thus, water-free oil can be produced from a well for prolonged periods at rates above the critical rate before the well reaches the condition to which the critical rate applies. The published literature contains little on the rate of growth of a cone. Experimentally, Meyer and Searcy studied the rate of rise of a cone in a Hele-Shaw model.' Additional related work on water breakthrough and produced water-oil ratios in water driven reservoirs was reported by Muskat," Hutchinson and Kemp," Henley, et al,' and Stevens, et a1.B Theoretically, the basic coning equations for a water-oil system can be developed by applying the conservation of mass to each of the phases, relating flow velocities with pressure by Darcy's law, and relating pressures across water-oil interfaces by capillary pressure. With the usual boundaries at the well and reservoir limits, the solution of the resulting equations for the time behavior of a water-oil interface constitutes a free-surface, boundary-value problem. In a shock wave compression study of a martensitic Fe-30 pct Ni alloy, Graham, Anderson, and Holland' found a region of unusual compressibility extending from a few kilobars up to about 20 kbars. This region was characterized by a continuously decreasing shock wave velocity with increasing stress. In this note, we report the results of a study initiated to determine the source of this unusual compressibility. In earlier shock-loading experiments on martensitic Fe-30 pct Ni, Loree et a1.' determined that a phase change occurred at about 80 kbars. Subsequently, Bowden and elly found that samples of a similar material shock-loaded at about 100 kbars experienced a martensite-to-austenite transition. Their crystal-lographic analysis showed the transition was a direct reversal of the established martensite system to the austenite phase. The shock loading in the present experiments was accomplished by precisely controlled plane impact between two discs of the sample material. This configuration created a state of uniaxial strain in the two the front of a projectile which was accelerated to various velocities. Planarity between the impacting discs was controlled to 5 x 10-4 rad, and impact velocities were measured to 0.5 pct. From a knowledge of the Hugoniot relationships of the material and the impact velocity, the shock-wave stress can be calculated. Samples were shocked at 18, 50, 70, and 100 kbars. The specimen discs shocked at 18 and 50 kbars were instrumented with quartz gages to observe the stress time profile. A more detailed description of the experiment has been given previously.4 The shock-loaded specimens were recovered intact by decelerating them in a catcher filled with soft wood. Discs of Fe-30 pct Ni nominally 12.7 mm thick and 64 mm in diam were cut from bar stock. Chemical analysis of the material provided the following composition in weight percents: 29.5 Ni, 0.50 Mn, 0.21 Si, and 0.10 C, with traces of Cr, Cu, Mo, Al, and Co. The discs were austenitized at 650° C for 2 hr at a pressure of less than l0-' torr, and furnace-cooled. Martensite was then produced by quenching the discs at -196" and holding 168 hr. The initial martensitic structure formed is shown in Fig. l(a). Typical microstructures of samples shock-loaded at 18 and 100 kbars are shown in Figs. l(b) and l(c). The banded structure with the austenite regions running parallel to the shock propagation direction was characteristic of samples shock-loaded at all stresses. No such banding was found in samples that were not shock-loaded. Comparison of Figs. l(b) and l(c) shows that, although under the optical microscope the two microstructures are quite similar, the martensite plates of the specimen shocked at 100 kbars etched in a distinctly different manner. This unique etching behavior of martensite in samples shock-loaded above the 80 kbar transition point has also been observed by Leslie el al.' These investigators determined from X-ray and electron microscope studies that fcc martensite, similar in appearance to normal bcc martensite, had been formed under shock loading. A quantitative determination of the amount of austenite present after shock loading was made by X-ray techniques. Both the methods of Lindren' and Miller' were utilized. The results are shown in Table I. The error limits are those experimentally observed from two independent analyses of each sample and represent the precision of the experiment. The absolute error, which should be similar for each sample, is believed to be about 10 pct. It is seen that as the shock stress increases the amount of austenite present also increases. On the basis of the X-ray and microscopic observations, we conclude that shock loading below the 80 kbar ersal will initiate a martensitic reversal: the amount of reversal that occurs increases with in-

This paper examines recent developments and work in progress on the application of quantitative methods and computers to the appraisal of the mineral resource potential of discrete areas by employing reconnaissance geological information and general economic relationships. The perspective of this paper might be that of a firm planning a regional exploration program or of a legislative body seeking to choose between several alternative actions on the basis of their impact upon the regional resources. In addition to this general survey and commentary, an example is presented of the use of geostatistical analysis and computer simulation to evaluate the economic mineral resources of the Seward Peninsula of Alaska.

It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into threee groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. CASTING MACHINES The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly. apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings.

Quench aging of supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium takes place in reasonable times in the temperature range 300&apos; to 500°C. Changes in internal friction, hardness, and electrical resistivity are found to accompany this change. THERE is practically no detailed information in the literature concerning interstitial solid solutions in either columbium or tantalum. The fact that both of these metals are used extensively commercially in both pure and alloyed states makes studies of their properties of value. While the plan is to study both these metals and their alloys extensively, so far only a small number of measurements have been made. This paper presents data obtained in the initial investigations of columbium. The principal interstitial impurities of columbium are likely to be hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The first of these, hydrogen, is outside the scope of internal friction measurements at present and nothing quantitative is known about the initial hydrogen content of the specimens. However, it is believed that it is completely absent after the preliminary heat treatments are carried out. The carbon content of the original samples is low and can be reduced still further during sample preparation. Oxygen is normally present to some extent in columbium and can also be added or removed easily. Nitrogen is also normally present in small amounts and can also be controlled within limits. Since it is not possible yet to remove all the nitrogen from columbium and since it is possible to remove essentially all the oxygen and carbon, initial measurements were made on the alloy system nitrogen in columbium. In this sense then, the alloys are true binary alloys. Little is known about the effects of nitrogen on the physical and metallurgical properties of columbium, so it was necessary to perform some rather elementary measurements on the specimens. These measurements are described briefly in the next section and are discussed in detail in later sections. Scope of the Work That internal friction is associated with diffusion of nitrogen in columbium has been known for some time. It is similar in nature to that for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron. In these latter cases, the information obtained from internal friction has been useful metallurgically.&apos; and it is not too much to expect useful information from similar studies on columbium containing nitrogen. The technique of internal friction measurements is adequately described by Ke2 At a frequency of 1 cps the internal friction peak for nitrogen in columbium occurs at 300°C and that for oxygen at 160°C." So that all the measurements will be meaningful metallurgically, the internal friction has been calibrated by making a measurement of the damping at the two peaks and a measurement of oxygen and nitrogen content by chemical analysis. A comparison of the two gives the following calibration factor: To go from damping capacity expressed in terms of 1/Q to weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution in columbium, multiply the peak values of internal friction by about 4 and 3 respectively." Data from which these factors were calculated are presented in Table I. The increase of electrical resistance of columbium caused by the addition of oxygen and nitrogen as interstitial impurities has been quantitatively determined. At room temperature the percentage increase is small for small additions of impurities (<0.1 wt pct); as the temperature is lowered it becomes an increasingly larger factor of the total resistance. An empirical relation has been established to express the resistivity at — 195°C in terms of weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution. It is easy to make supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium and to observe aging phenomena. The optimum aging temperature, as in the case for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron, occurs at the temperature for which the time necessary for a single place-change in diffusion is about 1 to 10 millisec. This means for nitrogen in columbium that significant property changes should take place for this alloy at about 400" to 500°C in reasonable time intervals. Results of such aging experiments are

Asterism appearing in X-ray Laue diagrams is an extremely sensitive index of changes in the internal structures of individual grains of polycrystalline metals. It indicates the existence of various forms of subboundary structure or subdivision within the grain. The present viewpoint is that the grain is made up of lattice blocks having substantially the same size and shape.l-4 When these blocks all assume exactly the same orientation, the crystal is perfect and asterism is absent. Cleaves and Thompson5 observed that the hardness of iron is virtually constant over a range of grain sizes. It is quite possible that the subboundary structure caused this, and that the latter is just as important as grain size itself. While the experiments reported here are not conclusive, they do support this viewpoint. Metals can, under certain conditions, be prepared entirely free from asterism, but this preparation does not necessarily require long heating or slow cooling, as will be shown here. In this paper a distinction is made between mosaic and distorted grain structures but the difference is only a matter of degree. In a previous paper9 it was shown that the grains can become distorted even during heat-treatment. The block structure exists inherently, even in a perfect crystal; the size and shape of these crystallites, or lattice blocks, varies, depending upon a number of factors. Goetz, for example: has shown that a metal before crystallizing from the molten state must go through a paracrystalline phase with oriented groups of atoms about 10-l4 to 10-l5 c.c., or 10-15 cm. in size. These crystallites, or blocks, appear to survive the most drastic cold-working, for it has been shown, and more elaborately by Wood&apos;s recent work," that cold-working cannot reduce the size of these crystallites smaller than of the order 10-5 cm. The interesting correlation brought out by the experiments of Goetz and Wood is that the block size after severe cold-working is of the same order of magnitude as the groups that formed in the metal just before crystallizing from the molten state. The work of Ewald and Rennenger17 and the now classical experiments of Darwin and James12,13 all strongly suggest the existence of a periodic structure of crystal. lites smaller than the grain itself. Related to this effect is the appearance of veinlike markings in the microstructures. Ammer-man and Kornfeld,16 in their experiments, did not observe any evidence of veining in specimens of alpha iron annealed below A3 and believed that veining was not due to impurities in the iron, as Northcott16 suggested; veining was observed by them only in specimens annealed above A3. Hanemann,16 Schrader and Tangerding found that annealing in hydrogen did not diminish veining and so it could not be caused by oxides. They concluded that veining was due to a slight difference in the orientation of ferrite lattice blocks. This viewpoint is well supported by the evidence presented here.

THE literature on refractories, although fairly extensive, is so scattered through books and periodicals as to be difficult of access to the general reader and most of the individual papers serve merely to illuminate some particular phase of the industry. Two general treatises by American authors8.16 are available, also the somewhat older works by a well-known British authority, 12,13 but these make their appeal to the technically minded ceramic engineer. Another small group of publications deals with the use of refractories, mainly in the iron and steel industry.1, 3,5,6,11,15 Raw materials utilized by the refractories industry have been covered by sundry books and articles. For the relatively nontechnical reader and economist, however, there appears to be no single review that purports to describe the industry as a whole. Furnace linings and other products that are classed as "refractories" are designed primarily to withstand high temperatures but this important property is by no means the only requirement; a suitable refractory material must likewise withstand slagging (chemical&apos; action), abrasion (physical wear), and spalling, as well as the various other stresses and physical phenomena induced by heat, of which softening or incipient melting is only one phase. Nevertheless, subject to these highly practical considerations, the definition of a refractory material is based upon temperature resistance. Broadly speaking, any material that shows obvious signs of fusion after being heated slowly to 1500°C (2732°F) cannot be classified as a refractory material. The characteristic properties and requirements of refractory materials are conveniently summarized in Fig 1, prepared on the American Refractories Institute Fellowship at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Most of the factors of service and properties of refractories given in this chart are interdependent and are greatly affected in degree by the functions of temperature and time. The factors in the chart are believed to cover the commoner questions.

It is appropriate to the place of meeting, and of interest to those members of the Institute whose attention has been more or less directed to Virginia during the past eleven years, to know the result of recent developments of the Virginia coal-field. While, during the late " boom," the attention of the industrial pioneers of Virginia was mainly directed to iron-ore deposits and manufacture, it is safe to say that the coal to which, at that time, comparatively little attention was turned, and which did not directly foster a growth of " boom " towns, will prove the most reliable source of mineral wealth in the State. At the time of the last Virginia meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, in 1883, the Wise county coal-field was untouched by a railroad, and its economic existence was scarcely considered. Although, in the meantime, a number of reconnaissances had been made, and a fair estimate of the value of the field formed, it was not until 1891, when the Norfolk and Western and the Louisville and Nashville railroads, respectively, completed their Clinch Valley and Norton extensions to a junction at Norton, Wise county, that any development took place, and not until 1892 were shipments of any importance made. The coal-measures of Virginia are confined to the seven counties of Buchanan, Tazewell, Dickenson, Russell, Scott, Wise, and Lee,
