Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

R. W. NEWCOMB, New York, N. Y. (written discussion*).-0n page 1712, the middle paragraph states that, in industrial equipment, only the single-step method of automatic regulation has been applied. Quite recently, there has been developed an automatic temperature regulator, operating in conjunction with a pyrometer of the thermoelectric type, in which the control is a slow regulation, with a range capable of regulat-ing valves, dampers, rheostats, or any other rotatable member, through one or more complete revolutions. It can control two valves at the same time, with a fixed definite ratio between them. Aside from those conditions in which it is. necessary to control two valves with a definite ratio one to the other, the greatest advantage that this slow, even control will have over those controls that are either all on or all off, will be for use in connection with processes where a large temperature variation is required, extended over a considerable period of time; that is, where the temperature must be regulated along an in-creasing or decreasing time-temperature curve.

The principal events in the oil history of south Arkansas, north Louisiana and Mississippi in 1930 have been: In Arkansas, very little activity, except for discovery of deep oil production at Urbana, and completion of the first oil well in Miller County. In Louisiana, continued development of the Zwolle area, bringing production up to about 10,000 bbl. per day; practically complete development of the Carterville oil-producing area; discovery and drilling of the rather disappointing Holly area, and discovery of Trinity gas production at Sugar Creek, Claiborne Parish and Rodessa, Caddo Parish. In Mississippi, discovery of the Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin counties. Proration of oil runs was not put in effect in these areas during 1930, because the natural decline of the older fields brought production below the demands of local markets. The only effect of the oversupply and low price of oil was the curtailment of some drilling which might otherwise have been done. Drilling in Arkansas reached the lowest stage since the discovery of oil, with less than 100 completions. Louisiana showed some increase in drilling over 1928 and 1929, but almost half of the wells were drilled primarily for gas rather than oil. As no review on north Louisiana production has been prepared since 1927, and there was none on south Arkansas for 1928, the developments of the three years, 1928, 1929 and 1930 are here briefly discussed.

APPROXIMATELY 5000 tons of zinc ore a day was mined during 1943 in the Mascot-Jefferson City district in East Tennessee. This ore came from the Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite, of Ordovician age. The Kingsport is composed of 350 to 400 ft. of limestone and dolomite. Thin cherts, sandy layers and shales are numerous. Frequently, the limestones are altered to crystalline dolomite. The Kingsport is divisible into four main lithologic zones. These divisions are illustrated in an accompanying table, which gives detailed sections of the ore-bearing beds as found in the mines and shows the exact positions of the various ore zones within the formation. Key beds are described and the practical applications of stratigraphy in mapping, prospecting and mining are discussed.

Production of many industrial minerals reached all-time records in 1965. In keeping with the high level of industrial activity throughout the nation, producers of many industrial minerals operated at capacity or near capacity, notably the producers of phosphate, potash and sulfur. In the case of sulfur, the demand exceeded production and orders were filled, in part, from stocks accumulated in previous years. Industrial minerals as a group continued to increase both in value and quantity at a faster percentage rate than metallic minerals and fuels, The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated that the value of industrial minerals produced in 1963 was $4318 million vs. $2006 million for metals. Preliminary estimates for 1965 indicate that current value of production was again more than 2% times that of metals, thus making apparent their importance to the industrial life of the nation.

Gentlemen of the American Institude of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to- night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now posses. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. I presume the remarks made to-night will bring this out very prominently. This is no disgrace, for with the means here-

The microstructures and textures developed by the working of high-purzly thermochemically deposited tungstem sheet have been inuesligated. Greater than 60 pct reduction was required to deslroy the columnar grain structure which existed in the as-deposited sheet. With increasing reductions the texture gradu-ally charged from the initial as-deposited orientation with (100) parallel to the sheet normal to a (100}(011) ideal ovienlation with some spread about the rolling direction. This texture was retained after recrystalli-zation a1 2000°C. THE processes for depositing tungsten by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride have been under development for the past several years.1,2 The nature of the deposition process is such that the as-deposited material contains a highly oriented columnar grain structure perpendicular to the deposition substrate. This well-defined columnar structure may be useful in certain applications293 but a wrought or equiaxed structure may be desired for some components such as tubing. Knowledge of the effects of working ther-mochemically deposited (TCD) tungsten is therefore necessary in order to establish the feasibility of obtaining worked and recrystallized microstructures and textures. The details of a recently developed technique for thermochemically depositing flat, uniformly thick tungsten sheet are presented with emphasis on the effects of deformation by rolling on the microstructure and texture. Although no work has been previously reported on the rolling and the annealing textures of TCD tungsten, there have been some determinations of textures for cold-rolled tungsten foil prepared from powder-metal -lurgy billets.4-8 The general description is that of a predominantly lurgy{100}(011) texture, with some spread about the rolling direction as an axis. pugh5 reports data both for cold-rolled and for annealed foil having about 96 pct initial cold work. He observed no change in texture, except for a decrease in the spread, for annealing treatments of 30 min at temperatures up to 1800°C. On annealing at 1900°C, both the low-temperature components plus new components which were described alternately as {001}(320) plus {001)(230) or as {100}(011) ± 12 deg about the sheet normal were observed. Above 1900°C, the new orientation existed alone, and it was stable up to 2500°C, the highest temperature that Pugh investigated. THERMOCHEMICAL DEPOSITION OF TUNGSTEN SHEET High-purity tungsten sheet was reproducibly deposited on the inner walls of a molybdenum mandrel by the thermochemical reaction WFs(g) + 3H2(g) - W(s) + 6HF(g). The mandrel was heated by a five-zone tube furnace which afforded a controllable fixed-temperature profile. Sheets measuring 1+ by 12 in. have been deposited with uniform thicknesses of up to 0.145 m. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the purified reaction gases were metered into a mixing chamber at a Hz-to-WF6 ratio of 15 and preheated to 350°C. The flow rate of the WF6 was 300 cu cm per min at stp. These gases were directed through a conical injector into the deposition chamber. Inside this chamber hydrogen reduction of the WF6 to pure tungsten metal occurred on the hot walls of the molybdenum mandrel at a total pressure of 5 Torr. Typical temperatures for the five zones in the chamber were, respectively, 565", 540", 550°, 570°, and 590°C. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Lebanon, and belonged to the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Lebanon Lodge 121, I. 0. 0. F. and Camp 65, P. 0. S. of A. Lieutenant Bernhardt Edward Heine Bernhardt Edward Heine, a lieutenant in the Aviation Service of the U. S. Army, died as the result of a fa1I1 in an aeroplane at Fort Sill, Okla., on Aug. 10, 1918. The accident occurred on Aug. 2, when the machine in which he was flying with Lieutenant Carsons fell from a height of 1500 ft.; Lieutenant Carsons was instantly killed, but Lieutenant Heine died from his injuries a week later. Lieutenant Heine was born at Mount Clemens, Mich., in 1895. After attending the local High School he entered the Michigan College of Mines, and became a Junior Member of the Institute while still a student. He graduated in 1916, with the degree of B. S. In 1914 he served as a transitman for the engineering department of the City of Hancock, Mich. Lieutenant Heine had been in the army since 1916, having been with the 'troops at 'the Mexican border. He had been in the Aviation Section since August, 1917.

The attention of physicists and metallurgists has been directed toward the study and explanation of the deformation textures in metals for the past 15 years. In 1920 N. Uspenski and S. Konobejewskil were first able to show that the symmetrical X-ray diffraction effects that had been previously reported by E. Hupka2 and others in metal foils were caused by a directed arrangement of the crystallites. Since then, the systematic study of textures resulting from the application of the pure forces of tension or compression to polycrystalline materials has been supplemented by many investigations on deformed single crystals, which have greatly added to our knowledge of deformation. However, despite the valuable information secured from these comparative studies only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature. This lack of quantitative data is especially unfortunate because of the much greater practical significance of rolling textures and their effects in both cold-rolled and annealed materials. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of specifying the deformation of rolled single crystals in the hope that such information might later facilitate the explanation of polycrystal-line textures. The internal surfaces of rocks which are in contact with interstitial fluids are known to influence in some degree the recovery of hydrocarbons from pay zones. Despite the admitted importance of the influence of solid surfaces on hydrocarbon recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks. In this paper a description is given of the apparatus and procedure employed in the determination of the surface areas of sedimentary rocks, and values are reported for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, consideration is given to the Kozeny equation, which relates surface area to porosity and permeability. A colliparison is made between the surface areas as calculated from this equation and the geometrical areas of a series of packs of spherical glass beads. Also, for a group of sandstone cores. Kozeny areas are compared with surface areas as determined by the gas adsorption method employed in this investigation. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that many processes which are of importance to hydrocarbon production are controlled in some degree by the extent of the surface of the reservoir rock through which the hydrocarbons move. For example, the recovery efficiency that is obtained in a given reservoir is certainly determined in part by the action of interfacial forces between the reservoir fluids and rock, and this action is influenced in turn by the extent of solid surface. Despite the admitted importance of surface effects to problems of petroleum recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks." It is the purpose of this paper to describe an apparatus which has been employed for the measurement of the surface areas of rock samples and to present the values which have been obtained for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, the relationship of surface area to permeability and porosity, as given by the Kozeny equation, will be discussed. METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE AREA The method of determining surface areas as employed in this work has previously found wide use in studies of porous solids such as catalysts. The method involves the measurement of the amount of physical adsorption of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, on the bare surface of the solid at reduced pressure and constant temperature near the normal liquefaction temperature of the gas. With the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption as developed by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller,' it is possible to ascertain the amount of gas (and hence the number of molecules) which is required to cover the solid surface with a single layer of molecules. From a knowledge of the covering area per molecule the total surface ares of the solid can be computed. Since the Brunauer. Emmett, Teller (BET) theory has been adequately discussed elsewhere: it will suffice here merely to present their final equation as ordinarily employed for surface-area calculations. This equation relates the volume of gas, V, which is adsorbed at pressure, P, to the liquefaction pressure, Po, of the gas, and to the volume of gas, V.,, that is required to form a monomolecular layer: In this equation C is a quantity which is related to the heats of adsorption and liquefaction of the gas; for a particular solid-gas system at Constant temperature, C is considered to have a constant value. The study of cobalt-platinum alloys has been of interest since they represent a class of permanent-magnet material in which the disorder-to-order transformation plays a controlling role. The magnetic properties of alloys in the range 40 to 60 at. pct have been found to be greatly influenced by composition and heat-treatment. The peak properties of 4700 coercive force and 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds energy product were obtained by controlled cooling and aging. These high values combined with ductility and machin-ability give the alloys useful characteristics although their high cost limits their application. THE cobalt-platinum alloys have been of interest in the study of permanent-magnet materials ever since the discovery by Jellinghaus that they had unusually high coerceive-force values.' The high coercive force was associated by Jellinghaus with the disorder-order reaction which occurred in these alloys. This was later verified by Gebhardt and Koster in a detailed study.2 An investigation of the structure, mechanism, and kinetics of the disorder-order transformation and resulting property changes in cobalt-platinum alloys has been in progress for some years. Certain phases of this study related to equilibrium rela- tions, and to the mechanism and kinetics of the ordering reaction have been published previously.3-5 In this paper, the results of the processing and heat-treatment studies on 40 to 60 at. pct CO alloys are presented. The magnetic properties have been found to be influenced greatly by the composition, by the cooling rate from the disordering treatment, and the final ordering time and temperature. Coercive force values, Hc, of 4700 oersteds and energy values, (BH)m, approaching 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds have been obtained by controlled cooling and ordering. The process of sand erosion has been harnessed to perform a useful function—the directed perforating of oilfield tubular goods and formation rock. In this process the sand is carried by a liquid medium and the resrrlting slurry is forced through a nozzle at an extren~ely high velocity. Upon impingement against casing or formation, the fast-moving sand particles erode a perforalion in the casing followed by cavity formation in the medium behind the casing. The many factors influencing the rate and extent of this penetration are inherently difficult to establish experimentally. Equations describing submerged jet behavior have been applied to these conditions. The following paper develops the equations for predicting the performance of the perforating jet. INTRODUCTION The cutting power of high-velocity sand has been well known in the petroleum industry for many years. Sand carried by a high-velocity gas stream causes severe erosion. This effect has been the cause of numerous production problems in certain areas. It was logical to expect that this phenomenon would one day be adapted to useful industrial applications. Development of mobile, high-pressure, high-horsepower pumping equipment in the last decade has made this possible. The sand erosion process involves pumping a fluid containing abrasive solids through a set of nozzles at a high differential pressure (2,000 to 4,000 psi). The pressure conversion into kinetic energy imparts high velocity to the sand particles which, upon impact with the formation face or casing wall, erode the material in an organized pattern. This paper attempts to establish the effects of the various parameters and to predict the performance and limitations of the process. The following factors will be considered: nozzle differential pressure, perforation size, sand concentration, nozzle stand-off distance and backpressure. In general, this discussion is presented along theoretical lines and is substantiated by field results and data where reliable field data exists. POWER EQUATIONS The penetration rate of a high-velocity hydraulic jet is proportional to the power or energy of the jet at the point in quesion. The power of the submerged jet will decrease with distance (or penetration) into the cavity created by the jet. As the cavity is extended into the formation, the power of the jet diminishes to a value equal to the threshold cutting power of the particular formation which is defiined as the lowest power level at which the formation will be abraded by the jet. Obviously, when this point is reached, no further cutting of the formation can occur. It is assumed that this power level for a particular formation is a function of the hardness of that formation. The following equation can be written for the hydraulic process of formation abrasion.

Plain carbon steel in the cold worked or marten-sitic conditions has an internal friction peak at about 250 oC at a frequency of I cps. The influence of substitutional alloying elements on this peak was examined experimentally. The alloys were vacuum melted Co-, Cr-, Mo-, Ni-, and Si-iron (about 3 pct alloying elements), and carburized Si-iron. The internal friction of the alloys in the temperature range 30o to 500 OC was determined by means of a torsion pendulum. The 250 oC peak of the cold-worked alloys was lower in height than that observed in plain C-iron and steel. Carburized Si-iron in the quenched condition had a peak which occurred at a slightly lower temperature than in quenched plain C-steel, but the height of the peak was substantially greater than that found for the same alloy in the cold-worked condition. The activation energy of this peak for martensitic Si-steel was about 35 kcal per mol. ANNEALED a iron has two internal friction peaks due to nitrogen and carbon at 20o and 40o C respectively, at a frequency of 1 cps. If a iron is cold worked, these diffusion peaks become smaller and a new peak appears at about 250o C. The activation energy for the 250o C peak is in the range of 32 to 44 kcal per mol and has an average value of 38 kcal per mo1. It has been experimentally verified that both interstitial solute atoms and dislocations are necessary for the 250o C peak. 3 Wert has also shown that an incubation period precedes the appearance of the 250 C peak.4 With regard to quenched martensitic steel, Ke et al.596 observed two peaks at around 130o and 250o C. They conjectured that the 250o C peak in martensite was due to the same mechanism as the 250°C peak in cold worked a iron, and the 130°C peak was due to the nature of tempered martensite. They did not report the activation energy for these peaks. Chernikova7 found only one peak at about 200° C in tempered martensite. In a previous paperS we reported an activation energy of approximately 40 kcal per mol for the 250° C peak in plain carbon martensitic steels. Ichiyama8 found the activation energy to be about 36 kcal per mol for the 250° C internal friction peak in steels in the martensitic condition. The present authors proposed a theory for the 250°C peak for cold worked and quenched iron and steel.= The theory for the peak is based upon the addition of a strain-energy term to the free energy for the formation of a carbide precipitate due to the presence of a disclocation. The model employed for the relaxation process consists of the growth and solution of a carbide precipitate of critical size as a consequence of an oscillating dislocation. In this report, the influence of substitutional alloy ing elements on the 250° C peak is examined and the experimental results are discussed in terms of our theory for the peak. Most of the experimental work on the alloy steels was confined to the Fe-Si-C alloys.

FLOTATION is now commonly practiced in alkaline ore pulps, yet little is known regarding the action of the alkaline solutions on the ore particles beyond the fact that films of oxidized material form. We wish to chronicle our discovery of the presence of soluble reducing agents in alkaline ore pulps of the United Verde, and present some data on lime consumption. During the grinding and flotation of a pyritic ore containing small amounts of ferrous sulfate and other soluble salts, an excess of lime was added to precipitate the salts, and filtered samples of the solution were titrated with standard permanganate solution. Even in pulps of high causticity an appreciable permanganate titration was always obtained, in spite of the fact that the solutions were shown to contain little iron. Investigation of the cause brought about the discovery of several previously unsuspected compounds in flotation pulps made from pyritic ore. Not only the reducing agents present had to be identified, but also the amount of dissolved oxygen, and a survey was finally made of the free oxygen content and reducing agents of the mill pulp in the concentrating mill at Clarkdale. A great many compounds might form, caused by oxidation of pyrite or other metal sulfides or by reaction between a lime solution and pyrite. The most probable compounds considered were calcium sulfides; polysul-fides, thiosulfates, and polythionates. Later it was discovered in the literature that in alkaline pulp polythionates do not exist and if introduced. are decomposed into sulfites and thiosulfates.1 Any precipitated sulfur is changed by alkali into thiosulfate and polysulfide. Sulfites and sulfides react to form thiosulfate, so that in the end it is possible to have in an alkaline solution only thiosulfate and an excess either of sulfide or sulfite. Data about production are very meager. In this county from the earliest days until after the Civil War, the amount of coal used locally greatly exceeded that shipped on account of the iron produced; for many years the furnaces used raw coal for melting the ore. In 1846 it was stated that in this county one ton of iron required three tons of iron ore and three tons of local coal used raw.1 In 1864, eleven furnaces in Pennsylvania using 102,230 tons of raw coal produced 44,671 tons of iron, or 2.3 tons raw coal per ton of pig iron .2 This was probably as good a record as was made, as nearly all furnaces changed to coke some years later. Neither of these figures include the coal used for steam and other purposes around an iron plant. The Beaver and Erie Canal was opened in 1845 and the shipments shown from then to 1865, inclusive, are of coal received by the canal at Erie, and do not include any used at local points along the canal. From the completion of the Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad in 1864 the tonnage shipped by canal decreased. rapidly, and, while the canal shipments after 1864 are supposed to be those received at Erie by canal only, they may include some rail tonnages. Tonnages on Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad may, and probably do, include some used locally; those on the Jamestown & Franklin Railroad do not. It is likely that both canal and Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad figures include some coal originating in Lawrence County, and possibly a little from Beaver County. These tonnages are not duplicated in the data for either of the other counties. Not all of the railroad reports can be found now.

Study with the electron microscope of the carbides in vanadium-chromium-molybdenum steels after tempering up to 1000 hr at 600 teelsto 1400°F confirmed that alloy carbides are formed at the secondary hardening temperature by decomposition of the plate-like iron carbides. It was also demonstrated that vanadium carbide persists as much smaller particles than do chromium- or molybdenum-bearing carbides. Conditions conducive to the formation of fine vanadium carbides are indicated to be favorable for high temperature strength. IN order to determine the effects of long exposure at high temperatures on vanadium-bearing steels, a survey has been made of their hardness and carbide structure. The behavior of carbides in the tempering of martensite was studied by X ray diffraction and electron microscope examination of electrolytically extracted residues in greater detail than in an earlier investigation.' A group of steels with about 0.25 pct carbon and containing chromium up to 5 pct, molybdenum up to 1 pct, and vanadium up to 1 pct was either quenched or annealed and then tempered for peri- ods of up to 1000 hr at 600° to 1400°F. Their hardness after tempering agreed with the Hollomon and Jaffe2 relation of equivalency of time and temperature, and with the degree of secondary hardening predicted from composition. Further, the appearance of the carbides indicated that the time and temperature equivalency relation was also applicable to the degree of carbide development. The mechanism of the tempering of martensite was demonstrated more clearly than in the earlier study. It was confirmed that carbides develop from martensite as poorly defined plates of the Fe2C type carbide followed by thickening of the plates with a transition to Fe,C. Finally the plate structure deteriorates into a lacy mass from which alloy carbides emerge as chunky particles that grow slowly with further increase of tempering temperature. Vanadium carbide derived from tempered martensite was found in characteristically small particles that tended to grow very slowly. The addition of chromium or molybdenum to a steel with predominant vanadium carbide tended to introduce carbides of a chromium- or molybdenum-bearing type having a somewhat larger particle size. The Cr,C, type carbide particles were larger than those of the V,C, type and somewhat smaller than the carbides in steel containing both Cr,C and M,C. Similar observations were made of the carbides in the pear lite of annealed steels. It appeared that high temperature properties would be benefited by the retention of the fine carbide particles that result from a balance of composition and heat-treatment designed to produce a maximum amount of vanadium carbide. Jones, Pittsburgh, Pa. : The question that naturally occlun to me is this: Has Dr. Dudley in his inveatigtrtions been aiming to prove a theory, or has he been guided by an earnest desire to discover what are the proper elements in the composition of a good-wearing steel rail ? Unfortunately, for correct chemical information, he has omitted in his analgw two very importnat elements,—sulpbur and copper. Now, before we will even begin to admit the correctnets of Dr. Dudley's conclusions and the formula he prescribes, we will at the start question the propriety of any chenlist or scientist prescribing a formula for making steel when he has iguared such important ele ments as sulphur aud copper. I, for one, will not accept any such formula. Are we sure, or is Dr. Daclley sure, that the chemical analyseq embodied in his paper are correct? This may seem a presumptuous queetion, yet, with my experience with chenlists, I naturally doubt the correctness of the analyse8, and, before I will accept them as correct, I will ask that comparative tests of phosphorous and man ganese be made by the Pennsylvania Railroad chemists and the chemists of the leading steel-works in the country. Let us first verify the correctness of the analyses before we consider the con clusions. I can enumerate a great number of instances in which chemists have differed very widely in their determinations of phos phorus and manganese. A prominent iron fitam made a contract with the Edgar Thomson Steel Company to deliver pig metal guar anteed to be between 0.07 and 0.08 phosphorus; an analysis by our chemist resulted in phosphorus 0.148 and 0.152,—a rather startling difference! Again, a sample bar of steel, in which our chemist reported phosphorus 0.11, was tested by a chemist of au other Bessemer works, ana his determinations were phosphorus between 0.07 and 0.08: A leading engineering establishmeut of Pittsbdrgh bought iron claimed by a chemical analysis to contain 0.08 phosphorus; our Mr. Ford found phosphorus 0.145. A chem ist connected with an open-hearth works reported manganese in a piece of steel, 1.14; in a second determination from the same piece of steel, by the same chemist, manganese was reported 0.43.
