The production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment—about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines1 in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 The concentration of the coarser sizes presents relatively little difficulty, good recoveries being obtained with jigs and tables. AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2).

In contrast, the pox structuve, a set of projections often veported in the literature, leaves no trace oj. segvegation. These obserl;atims, accovlrpanied by a brief review of recent literature, point to inconsistencies between experirrental obsevvation and the idea that the fornzation of a projection is a causal step in the development of a cellular substructure. An argument is presented to show instead how it is plausible for substantial depvessiom to form in the pvesence of constitutional supercooling at dislocations threading the solid-liquid interjace. THE development of constitutional supercooling during growth from the melt leads to the formation of the cellular solidification substructure. This well-founded association between structure and instability has been basic in understanding cellular substructure and micro segregation; however, the initial formation of structure seems unclear. Rutter and Chalmers,&apos; in definitive experiments and theory, noted that in the presence of constitutional a planar interface might break down: "resulting in the formation of a small projection on an initially plane or uniformly curved interface." That is, the breakdown from a planar to a cellular interface was implied to be initiated via a projection into the unstable liquid. Later, Walton et (11. found that a structure of isolated projections, termed "pox", appeared at solid-liquid interfaces decanted under growth conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling; the pox were taken as the indication of the instability promoted by the supercooling. Tiller and Rutter4 in their extensive work studied the shape transitions at decanted interfaces which were generally observed to proceed as— pox, "irregular cells", elongated cells, regular (hexagonal) cells, and so forth. The pox varied in size from lo-&apos; to 1CT4 cm, and tended to disappear as cells increased in number and regularity, but as noted,4 the first real array of cells did not seem to be a development from the pox. In fact these authors implied a lack of connection because they stated that the pox are denser on "irregular cells", and as cell boundaries increase in number (i.e., the cells become smaller) there is less need for the pox which do dis- appear. Thereafter, most authors dealing with either experiment or theory have accepted the reality of pox and have used them as a criterion for the onset of constitutional supercooling. In contrast, Spittle, Hunt, and smiths have now suggested that pox are irrelevant artifacts comprised of such things as entrapped oxide. This proposal invokes the observations of weinberg6 and chadwick7 each of whom have shown that the act of decanting leaves a residual liquid on a decanted interface; the remnant solid layer of the order 10 p may thus contain particles that might have been transported from the external surfaces, or elsewhere, during decanting. With the incentive of this suggestion,= some further experiments and a reexamination of the literature have been conducted, in order to question the validity of pox as evidence of an instability and to examine the initial development of the cellular substructure. 1) EXPERIMENTS Single crystals of zone-refined tin (-99.9999 pct) were grown from the melt in a controlled fashion with various, small concentration additions of lead and antimony, for which ko < 1 and > 1, respectively. The crystals were decanted at conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling and were thus appropriate for observation of slight perturbations. It was possible to observe two types of small departure from smooth or "planar" interfaces in both cases of lead or antimony additions. Some were projections and others, if in regular array of any type, were depressions. The crystals were etched with suitable reagents progressively dissolving the decanted interface surface; projections left no record, but depressions were continuously associated with spotlike areas contrasting with the rest of the interface. Traverses were made with the beam of an electron microprobe across the regions of contrast; with lead addition the persistent spots were lead-rich, and with antimony addition the persistent spots were antimony-poor. This is consistent only with a dominant role for depressions, because if the projections had left spots but were incorrectly catalogued, a reversed observation should have been made; that is, the Pb(ko < 1) should have been depleted and the Sb(ko > 1) enriched. In the work of Cole and inegard, and elewhere, regular arrays of structure associated with the initial stage of instability have been shown, in photographs and represented as pox or projections. We believe this to be erroneous, by inference, since whenever a regular array was observed, in the present examination, it consisted of depressions, regardless of the nature of the solute, ko 1. Fig. 1 is reproduced8 as an ideal example of the possible optical illusion involved; the observer can satisfy himself from the distribution of illuminated areas that the markings are depressions. MUCH progress has been made in recent years in the theory and practice of making stainless steel. By effective utilization of oxygen for decar-burization and more suitable alloying agents, it has been possible to attain consistent production of very low-carbon stainless steel. In order to facilitate economical production of stainless steels, the Electro Metallurgical Co. has carried out an extended experimental program that has clarified some of the complex interrelations of temperature and composition under decarburizing and reducing conditions. These results&apos;-:&apos; have been founded in large part on small experimental heats, and in order to confirm their validity and significance under commercial conditions, a survey of stainless steel melting practice has been made with the cooperation of stainless steel producers. Conditions required for decarburization and associated oxidation of chromium, manganese, and iron have been fairly well established in relation to the beneficial effect of the highest practicable temperature. The recovery of chromium and manganese from highly oxidized slags by reduction with silicon has been indicated with somewhat less precision and this study has shown significant deviation in large commercial heats from the small experimental heats. In spite of an unsatisfactory degree of accuracy in estimating the conditions affecting reduction of metallic values, it has been possible to calculate a slag weight in reasonably good agreement with the results observed in large heats. While there still is much to be learned about both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of stainless steel melting, this survey has indicated the manner by which the efficiency of the production process may be measured. Oxidation Period In order to establish practices for the recovery of chromium and manganese from the slag the amounts of these metals oxidized should be known. Moreover, since reduction of oxidized chromium and manganese must necessarily be accompanied by similar reduction of iron, knowledge of the total quantity of metallics oxidized is essential. The relations between carbon, chromium, and temperature under oxidizing conditions were developed by Hilty in 1948.&apos; While it had been realized previously that retention of chromium in the metal during carbon oxidation is favored by high temperatures, the Hilty relation provided quantitative information useful for evaluating melting procedures. For example, it was shown that decarburization to moderate carbon levels can be achieved while retaining substantial amounts of chromium. However, in decarburizing to the low-carbon level necessary for producing 0.03 pct maximum carbon stainless steel, very little chromium remains in the bath at the temperatures generally employed. For this reason, Hilty, Healy, and Crafts&apos; later projected an extension of the chromium-carbon relation to the low-chromium region. Although this chromium-carbon-temperature relation defined the composition of a chromium steel bath at the end of the oxidizing period, it did not provide a direct means for estimating the total amount of metallic oxidation occurring during decarburization of a stainless steel heat. This subject was investigated by Crafts and Rassbach³ and, later, by Hilty, Healy, and Crafts" who demonstrated that metallic oxidation is a function of the chromium content of the initial furnace charge, the minimum carbon content attained, and the temperature. It was further demonstrated from data on 1-ton heats that an empirical relationship exists between the ratio of chromium plus manganese to iron in the slag (S) to the corresponding ratio of these components present in the metal bath. The following expression was derived to permit the calculation of the amount of metallics oxidized during decarburization of a given charge: W-2000 (Cr1 + Mn1)-(Cr2 + Mn2) 1 100s/s+1-(Cr3 + Mn2) where W is the pounds of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized per ton of charge; Cr1, the percentage of chromium in the charge; Mn1, the percentage of manganese in the charge; Cr2, the percentage of chromium in the bath after oxidation; Mn2, the percentage of manganese in the bath after % Cr + % Mn oxidation; and S =%cr+ % Mn/%Fe in the slag after %Fe oxidation. In order to establish whether the slag ratios of commercial heats are consistent with those found in the experimental heats, the slag and metal analyses shown in Table I were evaluated. These data represent samples taken after the oxidation of two 1-ton and seven 15 to 25-ton heats of types 303, 304, and 304L stainless steel made in chromite, acid, and basic hearths. Fig. 1 illustrates that the results for the commercial heats correlate reasonably well with the relationship originally established for experimental 1-ton heats. Roof bolting is the most common means of support in under- ground coal mines. The main advantages of this support system are the relative ease of installation and the ability to provide a stable and unobstructed work area. Roof bolts can be broadly classified into two categories, mechanical and resin bolts. Currently, about 20% of all bolts used are the resin types, and trends show an increasing popularity of these kinds. Although the reinforcing effects of resin bolts have been well demonstrated, there is, nevertheless, a considerable lack of knowledge of their interaction with the surrounding strata. To study this interaction and to further investigate the mechanisms involved in resin bolting, an instrumentation system was designed and tested in a southwestern Virginia coal mine. The instrumentation system was composed of straingaged resin bolts, convergence and differential sag stations, and a borescope. Strain gages mounted on the bolt determined axial, bending, and shear strain at several levels along the axis of the bolt. The roof movement, as measured by the convergence and differential sag readings and as observed by the borescope, correlated well with the strains registered on the bolts.

Interest in the various products of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, particularly as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain,&apos; has resulted in the application of similar heat treatments to other eutectoid transformations. Studies o f the beta copper-aluminum alloy eutectoid transformation revealed microstructures very similar to those found in iron-carbon alloys. Investigations5t6 of the kappa phase in the copper-silicon alloy system have established the eutectoid type transformation of this phase into terminal alpha and intermediate gamma phases. This transformation has been reported5 as forming a eutectoid type structure in a very sluggish manner by a long time isothermal treatment. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the products of the kappa eutectoid transformation as affected by transformation temperatures by means of microscopic and hardness methods. Preparation of Alloys The copper-silicon alloy equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig 1. The kappa field converges to a minimum silicon solubility at the eutectoid composition and all other completely kappa alloys are hypereutec-toid. Thus, kappa decomposition involves first the proeutectoid precipitation of gamma, followed by the eutectoid transformation of a lower silicon content kappa (5.2 pct) Smith6 has indicated that alloys containing between 5.4 and 5.7 pct silicon could be hot rolled, but that the latter composition was desirable in order to permit a wider kappa temperature range. The alloy was prepared by adding Baker&apos;s commercially pure silicon to an ingot of copper-silicon alloy containing 2.34 pct silicon remaining from the investigation of Brick, Martin and Angier.&apos; Following the casting techniques of Krynitsky, Saunders and Stern,s the ingot was melted under a heavy layer of dried charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible in a gas-fired pot furnace. Small lumps of silicon were held under thc melt surface with a graphite rod. After the silicon had dissolved, the alloy was chill-cast and then remelted without a cover, stirred thoroughly, skimmed and poured into a preheated cast iron mold. The cast microstructure is shown in Fig 2. The casting, 10 X 4 X K in., was annealed at 750°C for 21 hr and furnace cooled, About }{& in. was milled from all surfaces. The plate was cut in half longitudinally and the bottom half analyzed by A.S.T.M. and The composition by weight was as follows: copper 94.24 pct, silicon 5.56 pct, iron 0.11 pct.

The amounts of oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys up to 50 pct Ti were measured and the oxide phases in equilibrium with these alloys were determined by using TiO² crucibles. A minimum of about 0.003 pct 0 occurs at less than 1 pct Ti. The various liquid and solid oxide phases can be arranged on a ternary isotherm. THREE characteristics of titanium contribute to the interesting aspects of its reaction with oxygen in liquid iron: 1—It forms a number of stable oxides. 2—All oxides have large negative free energies of formation. 3—The pure metal exhibits high solubility for oxygen. In addition, the use of titanium as a stabilizing and strengthening element in alloys suggests a need for investigation of its reactions in amounts greater than those normally required for deoxidation. These higher compositions are also of interest because they occur during the addition of ferroalloys and produce deoxidation products before dilution is achieved. Titanium Deoxidation in the Literature While the use of titanium as an alloying element and deoxidizer has been common for several decades, the first detailed study of its deoxidizing characteristics was carried out by Wentrup and Hieber&apos; in 1939. These authors determined the extent of deoxidation possible with titanium and identified, by microscopic examination, the products formed. They found that titanium in excess of 0.2 pct did not reduce the oxygen content of iron below 0.004 pct at 1600°C. They identified the spinel FeO-TiO² at low titanium concentrations and Ti2O³ in melts containing more than 0.2 pct Ti. A portion of the area surveyed by Wentrup and Hieber has been investigated recently by Evans and Sloman² using X-ray diffraction for inclusion identification. They concurred in general with the findings of Wentrup and Hieber, but reported the existence of Ti³O5 as a deoxidation product in the range near 0.1 pct Ti. Comstock, Urban, and Cohen³ discussed the deoxidation of iron with titanium, correlating the data of Wentrup and Hieber with free-energy data for the titanium oxides. Scatter at high titanium values was considered attributable either to the formation of an oxide exhibiting high solubility in liquid iron or to the entrainment of solid oxide particles leading to high apparent solubility. Chipman&apos; has calculated the deoxidation curves for titanium based on free-energy data for titanium oxides. These calculations (Fig. 1) and those of Comstock, Urban, and Cohen involve assumptions as to the activity coefficients of oxygen and titanium in liquid iron, since such data have not been determined. Investigation of the deoxidizing characteristics of chromium" and vanadium0 have shown that these elements decrease the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid iron, leading to a tendency toward relatively high oxygen values and experimental scatter in highly alloyed melts. Experimental This investigation involved two major objectives: 1—determination of the composition of the oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Ti alloys, and 2—establishing the pattern of oxygen solubility in liquid Fe-Ti alloys at titanium concentrations in excess of that required for attainment of minimum oxygen content. &apos;"THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (public Law T. 552. 82nd Congress) was approved oil July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspectio1.1 and Investigation Act of May 7. 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter. coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title 11 contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires. inundations. and man-trip 01. man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that preceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Govermment as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coalmine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small folce of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations aftel mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia. Ill., disaster of March 25. 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. The act is a compromise measure. Senator Matthew M. Neely of West Virginia and Congressman Melvin Priec of Illinois introduced almost identical versions in the 82nd Congress, but they were considered too drastic. The final version was introduced by Congressman Samuel K. McConnel, Jr., of Pennsylvania, after considerable discussion and amendment in committee hearings. It was passed by the Congress and became effective when signed by the President on July 16, 1952. The act is somewhat limited in scope because it applies only to approximately 2000 coal mines in the United States and Alaska that employ regularly 15 or more individuals underground. It exempts approximately 5300 mines employing regularly fewer than 15 individuals underground and all strip mines, of which there are about 800. Moreover, it covers only conditions and practices that may lead to major disasters from explosion, fire, inundation, or man-trip or man-hoist accidents. According to Bureau records, such accidents have resulted in less than 10 pct of all the fatalities in coal mines. It is important to mention that the law is not designed to prevent the day-to-day type of accidents that have caused the remaining 90 pct or more of the fatalities, because it was the specific intention of the Congress to reserve the hazards which caused them to the jurisdiction of the coal-producing states. Many who opposed any Federal legislation that would give the Federal inspectors authority to require compliance with mine safety regulations claimed that such legislation would usurp or infringe upon States&apos; rights. To assure that the principle of States&apos; rights would be preserved, the act provides for joint Federal-State inspections when a state desires to cooperate in such activities. The Director of the Bureau of Mines is required by the act to cooperate with the official mine-inspection or safety agencies of the coal-producing states. The act provides further that any state desiring to cooperate in making joint inspections may submit a State plan for carrying out the purposes of this part of the act. Certain requirements are listed: these must be met by a state before the plan can be accepted. The Director of the Bureau of Mines, however, is required to approve any State plan which complies with the specified provisions. The Director may withdraw his approval and declare such a plan inoperative if he finds that the State agency is not complying with the spirit and intent of any provision of the State plan. When this paper was prepared, agreements for joint Federal-State inspections had been entered into with Wyoming and Washington. A few other states have indicated their desire to submit a State plan and negotiations toward that end are now under way. Reluctance to enter into such agreements may be due to the mine operators&apos; knowledge that in the states that adopt a cooperative plan they are prohibited from applying to the Director of the Bureau of Mines for annulment or revision of an order issued by a Federal inspector and must appeal directly to the Federal Coal Mine Safety Board of Review for such action. Experience has proved that review by the Director as provided in the act is a less expensive and time-consuming procedure to all concerned than applying to the Board. Reluctance also may stem from the fact that joint Federal-State inspections somewhat restrict the movements of the State mine inspectors and tend to reduce the number of inspections of mines. Where a State plan is not adopted, the Federal coal mine inspector is responsible under the law to take one of two courses of action if he finds certain hazardous conditions during his inspections. The first action involves imminent danger. If a Federal inspector finds danger that a mine explosion, mine fire, mine inundation, or man-trip or man-hoist accident will occur in a mine immediately or before the imminence of such danger can be elim-

This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.

DEVELOPMENT of a simple radioactive tracer technique for measurement of the diffusion coefficient of calcium ion in liquid slag has already been reported. The investigation was of a preliminary nature designed to explore the possibilities of using radioactive isotopes and to establish a method, and no great accuracy was claimed for the results. It was shown, however, that Ca15 could be used successfully, and the values obtained for the diffusion coefficient appeared to be of the right order of magnitude. However, it was considered that a better technique could be devised for carrying out the diffusion. The experiments were, therefore, continued to find a more accurate method, to check the calcium results, and to extend the investigation to include measurements of the diffusion coefficient of silicon in the same slag. There were two flaws in the original technique. Convection was the cause of too many failures, and the interface between the two slags in the diffusion cell was curved rather than plane, probably due to a surface tension effect caused by the addition of the tracer Ca45 in the form of chloride. Two methods of overcoming these defects were tried. Since it was planned to study diffusion of the short-lived isotope Si"&apos; also, the development of methods was restricted to those which gave promise of being reasonably rapid. Method 1—The principle was identical to that previously used with respect to the diffusion conditions, but there were three differences in technique. Temperature control was more rigid, the tracer was added to the slag as Ca45O rather than the chloride and, finally, an effort was made to translate to high temperatures the elegant method developed by Cohen and BruinV or bringing together the two liquid layers and beginning the diffusion. A master slag was melted in graphite, ground to a fine powder, and analyzed (38.5 pct Ca0-20.9 pct Al2O3-40.5 pct SiO2). The tracer was received as Ca45C12 in an aqueous solution of CaC12 + HC1. From this, calcium oxalate was precipitated, ignited to calcium oxide, and added as such to the slag to give an activity of approximately 5 µc per g. The mixture was then melted into the form of a cylinder 3/16 in. diam and about 1 in. long. A solution identical to the tracer solution without Ca45 was given exactly the same treatment. The resulting Ca40O was mixed with that slag which was to form the tracer-free half of the diffusion cell, and this was likewise melted into a cylinder of the same size. THE idea presented in this paper is that the capacity of a metal for plastic flow before rupture is dependent on the type of stress system applied-that is, the absolute magnitude of the stresses are unimportant provided that they are large enough to produce continued flow; the important factor is the "type" of stress system. A term called the "triaxial stress ratio" is defined in such a way that this ratio can be used to characterize the "type" of system. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section discusses means of representing the effect of complex stresses on plastic flow and defines "triaxial stress ratio"; the second section discusses various methods of&apos; obtaining complex stress distribution. The third section gives some experimental results showing the effect of types of complex stress on the capacity of various metals for flow. An appendix discusses some details on methods of obtaining complex stresses. I. REPRESENTATION OF COMPLEX STRESS SYSTEMS AND THEIR EFFECT ON PLASTIC FLOW Representation of Stresses It is convenient to have a consistent system of notation that will allow the representation of the entire range of complex stresses from hydrostatic compression to hydrostatic tension on plastic flow in a single diagram. Such a system is provided by making use of the fact that any complex stress system can be resolved into a hydrostatic tension or compression and a pure shear. Consider a stress system having the principal stresses [S1 S2 5 S3]. This system can be resolved into a new system consisting of the three components [ ] and three pure shears. If Sm is positive, the net stress effect is hydrostatic tension; if it is negative, the effect is hydrostatic compression. In order to produce a systematic notation, a quantity that will be referred to as the "triaxial ratio" will be defined by the equation [ ] Sm is given by Eq. I and S1 is the absolute magnitude of the largest principal stress without regard to sign. Table I lists the triaxial ratios for various common systems. The advantages of the tri-axial diagram in representing the composition of slags and silicates are well appreciated by many metallurgists. Prof. H. M. Howe* has pointed out the application of a fourth variable, in connection with the diagram, and has called attention to the usefulness of the general systern of tri-axial representation. In the discussion of Prof. Howe&apos;s paper, Mr. Firmstone† indicated how certain distances could be measured directly by projection. Prof. R. H. Thurston,‡ as early as 1877, had made use of a typtic model and of triangular diagrams, with contour-lines, rekrresenting varying physical properties corresponding to varying chemical composition. Still earlier, Prof. J. Willard Gibbs§ had used the diagram in similar work; and other scientists were thought by him to have preceded him in its use. During the period of nearly a quarter-century, following these early publications, there has been an ever-increasing use of graphic methods in numerous branches of scientific work, stimulated, in part, by the possibility of representation by three co-ordinates upon plane-surfaces. Yet the number of possible co-ordinates for graphic representation has always been, and always must be, insufficient to express many facts which are shown mathematically; while, without graphic representation, the involved nature of mathematical expression often fails to facilitate and promote research. The coming into use, therefore, of the fourth co-ordinate, permitting representation by four variables, marks but the beginning of some lines of research which could not well advance without this aid.

Defects in the interior of metal objects are troublesome to both manufacturer and user. For the former, they frequently increase manufacturing cost through the rejection of material when defects appear after considerable work has been done. For the latter, they often cause damage to equipment, personal injury, or loss of life when a part, which has passed all inspections and has been put in service, gives way because of a hidden flaw. Methods of testing that locate such flaws without subjecting the specimen to possible, if not actual, destl-uction are few; x-ray examination, whether fluoroscopic or radiographic, is one. Hitherto, however, x-ray examination has been restricted to objects of nearly uniform thickness and regular outline; the inspection of such articles as those shown in Fig. 1 has been inconvenient and unsatisfactory.
