The Conference began with registration, followed by a well-attended cocktail party on the evening of Sunday 25th, where, in a convivial atmosphere, Dr Louw Alberts, President of Mintek, welcomed the delegates and wished them an enjoyable and informative week. The Conference was formally opened by the Minister Mineral and Energy Affairs, the Honourable Mr D. W. Steyn, at 9hOO on Monday. Sketching the history of Mintek and its predecessors, Minister Steyn described the objective and achievements of Mintek, as well as the background to mineral-processing research in South Africa and the policy of the South African government towards the development of the mineral industry.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, and loading and hauling constitutes one of the major cost items on the mine. Because high productivity in loading and hauling results in large financial benefits, the following projects to improve productivity were implemented at Sishen: - a computerized truck-allocation system, - an overhead power-supply system for the dieselelectric driven rear-dump trucks, - an in-pit crusher and a belt-conveyor system. This paper concentrates on the truck-allocation system, with special reference to the improved productivity of loading and hauling resulting from the implementation of this system.

The production of high-strength Iow-alloy (HSLA) steels containing either niobium or vanadium as the principal micro-alloying element is discussed, including recent developments in steelmaking practice that have had a great effect on the development of HSLA steels; strengthening mechanisms, as well as the principles of thermomechanical treatment during controlled rolling on a hot-strip mill; and the results of production heats with various amounts of micro-alloying elements.

Mr Colin M. Spence took office as President of The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1984. Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. Cessation of Membership In accordance with Clauses 7.6.1 and 12.1 of the Institute's Constitution, Rules and Policy, the following members have been struck off the Membership list.

This paper describes the method used at Agnes Gold Mine in the calculation of pillar strengths, which involves a back-analysis type of approach. The results obtained there are comparable with those obtained by accepted formulae for pillar strength. It was found that a stress level of 70 MPa for the width of combined pillars (Le. crown and sill pillars) causes failure of the reef drives as well as the tops and bottoms of the stope side walls. As shrinkage stoping to depths of more than 650 m would result in very low percentage extractions, alternative methods of stoping will have to be investigated for these depths.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.

The metallurgical phenomena in the design and manufacture of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels are reviewed, and some aspects of the production of Supraform TM (thermo-mechanically processed) steel are discussed. . The weldability of Supraform TM is related to changes in the microstructure of its heat-affected zone.

The results of small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot-plant investigations at Grootvlei Proprietary Mines Ltd, President Brand Gold Mining Co. Ltd, and Western Areas Gold Mine Co. Ltd are reported. At each mine, a pulp was fed simultaneously to a carbon-in-pulp plant, allowing a direct comparison of the metallurgical performance of the two processes. With the Grootvlei pulp, gold was extracted more efficiently by resin than by carbon owing to the Iow concentration of competing base-metal cyanide complexes in solution. With the Western Areas pulp, the reverse was true because of the high concentrations of copper and nickel in solution. Finally, with the President Brand pulp, resin-inpulp was significantly superior to carbon-in-pulp owing mainly to the inherently slow rate of gold extraction from calcine by activated carbon. Results are presented that show the efficiency of the elution of gold and other elements with a variety of reagents from the loaded resins arising from these three campaigns. At Western Areas, a detailed investigation enabled a preliminary cost evaluation to be made of three techniques for the elution of strong-base resins.

An international conference on 'The Planning and Operation of Open-pit and Strip Mines' was held at University of Pretoria from 9th to 13th April, 1984. The Conference was organized by the Mining Alumni Society the University of Pretoria and The South African Institute Mining and Metallurgy. Delegates of the mining fraternity from all over the world and Southern Africa attended the Conference. These included more than 400 delegates from Australia, Austria, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Holland, SWA-Namibia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

The time 06h30 in midwinter is a little early to set out on an excursion from Johannesburg. Yet this was the hour that members, many accompanied by their wives, started to assemble in the parking lot adjacent to the squash courts at the Wanderers Club, Illovo, for a visit to Premier Diamond Mine at Cullinan. All fifty were checked in and aboard the coach by 07hOO. Coffee and sandwiches, served en route by Doris Gardner and Pam Binstead, were most welcome. A 36-year-old A-S-H pump, manufactured to designs dating back to 1936, was recently presented to the Gold Mine Museum by Envirotech. The pump, a B-frame three-piece rubber-lined Hydroseal unit, was supplied by Envirotech's predecessor company, Denver Machinery, and was installed by South Roodepoort Main Reef Areas Limited on 22nd March, 1948. Metals, materials, manufacturing The 37th Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Metals will be held in Ballarat (Australia) from 13th to 17th May, 1985. 1985is the Sesquicentennial year of Victoria, and for the first time the historic City of Ballarat has been chosen as the venue for an Australasian Institute of Metals congress. Steel rolling Conferences on steel rolling, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISH), and supported by iron and steel institutes in many countries of the world, have been held since 1980. The first conference was held in Tokyo in 1980, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.

This paper summarizes the investigations carried out into a defect involving the corners of billets rolled from continuously cast blooms, which broke open during the rolling process. As it was believed that the defect must be connected with the formation of subcutaneous blowholes in the bloom, the investigations were directed towards an understanding of the roles of the three gases involved in the process. In an extensive trial programme, samples were taken from the heat at all stages of processing, as well as from all the raw materials and alloys. The main sources of nitrogen were found to be re blows, pick-up from the alloys added to the ladle (especially graphite), and open-stream casting. The major source of hydrogen was moisture in the alloys, especially high-carbon ferromanganese and silicomanganese. Further, it was established that the moisture content of the alloys is closely related to the appearance of the defect in steels with a carbon content of less than 0,20 per cent; 72 per cent of all the defects were present in this type of steel. Most of the remaining defects were found in steels with a carbon content of more than 0,60 per cent, where the nitrogen content was substantially higher than in the lower-carbon steels. It is suggested that the defect arises from the combined effect of oxygen. nitrogen, and hydrogen. Its occurrence in low- and high-carbon steels is triggered by the formation of subcutaneous blowholes when the critical oxygen level for carbon monoxide blowholes is lowered by the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen and nitrogen respectively.

It is suggested that an increase in the production from thin coal seams in South Africa is necessary, and that a substantial amount of any increase will be mined by the bord-and-pillar method. For the purpose of this study, a thin coal seam was regarded as any seam 1,5 m thick or less to the minimum thickness at which mechanized equipment can operate in bord-and-pillar workings. The equipment being utilized in thin-seam bord-and-pillar layouts includes conventional equipment, load-hauldump cars (scoops), and drum-type and Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners. Comparisons are made of these types of equipment for bord-and-pillar mining at various seam thicknesses within the thin-seam range. The evaluations involved production rates and the cost of extraction for South African conditions, use being made of an existing computer modelling technique in the generation of production rates. The indications are that, for seam thicknesses greater than 0,9 m, drum-type continuous miners utilizing continuous haulage are the most productive and cost-effective equipment at present operating in thin-seam bord-and- pillar workings. Where seams thinner than 0,9 m are to be exploited, Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners, particularly the Mark 22, produce the most coal at the lowest cost.

If a transition from one equilibrium state to another occurs during the course of mining, energy transfer takes place in the rock mass, which is assumed to be an elastic continuum. The energy components are defined as follows: the work done by external and body forces, W; the increase in stored energy in the mass, Uc; the strain energy in the rock mined during the transition, Urn; the work done on mine support or backfill, Ws; and the released energy, Wr. The energy balance is defined as (W + Urn) - (Uc + Ws) = Wr> 0, where the first set of components in parentheses represents the sources of energy, while that of the second corresponds to the known modes of energy expenditure and the component on the right is the unaccounted-for energy surplus, which must be released and dissipated in some form. The inequality Wr ~ Urn> 0 applies. Expressions for the energy components are derived first for the general case and then for the 'slit' modal used to simulate tabular excavations. Through specific examples, the importance of the progressive nature of mining is emphasized. The size of the steps used to enlarge the excavations appears to play a significant role in the mode of energy transfer. This observation forms the basis of the second paper in this series of two papers.

All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by the Council. Although the worldwide readership of the Journal results in a preference for papers in English, the Council treats papers in Afrikaans on an equal basis, but, to meet the needs of the majority of readers, an English summary of some 5OO to 750 words should be provided.

Crossroads for Students Students in their matriculation year, whatever their background, have reached a crossroads in their lives: behind them lie the relatively carefree years of childhood; ahead lies the whole of their working lives. Dr R. E. Robinson, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.sc. (Chem. Eng.) cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1950 and a Ph.D. (Eng.) from the same University in 1953, where he was awarded the Haikes Memorial Medal for Industrial Chemistry. Professor G. G. Garrett was appointed Professor of Physical and :Fabrication Metallurgy in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in June 1980, and in January 1984 he became Head of the Department. Mr P. A. van Wielligh, Pr. Eng., climbed the mining ladder in the hard way, starting as a Mine Surveyor in 1936 and working his way up as Chief Surveyor, Underground Manager, Mine Manager, and Consulting Engineer, to Executive Director, including the intermediate steps. Mr H. E. James, Pr. Eng., is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Both his B.sc. degree (1961) and his M.sc. degree (1964) were obtained on bursaries, the former from Gold Fields of South Africa and the latter from the Atomic Energy Board. Mr G. Pienaar, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.Eng. (Met) in 1967 and an M.Eng. in 1973, both from the University of Pretoria. Dr A. K. Haines, Pr. Eng., obtained all his degrees from the University of Natal, finishing with a. Ph.D. in 1971. Mr B. C. Alberts, Pr. Eng., obtained his academic training at the University of Pretoria, where he was awarded B.sc. degrees in both agricultural engineering (1963) and mining engineering (1965). Mr H. C. van Zyl, Pr. Eng., holds B.sc. degrees in mining engineering (1968) and civil engineering (1972), both from the University of Pretoria.

In the investigation described here, it was found that the main effect of temperature is on the rate of flotation, and that adsorption of the reagent is not rate controlling. Above 10°C, the flotation rate of pyrite and gangue increases almost exponentially with a rise in temperature. Below that temperature, the flotation rate of pyrite shows a sudden marked decrease, that of gangue increases, and the sulphur grades are significantly poorer. In the flotation of pyrite, the mass transfer of the pyrite from the pulp to the troth is thought to be the ratecontrolling step, whereas the flotation of gangue is controlled by the combined effect of the stability and velocity of the froth and the viscosity of the elutriating medium. The latter is probably the controlling effect at temperatures below 10°C. Little difference was noted in the recoveries (provided no time limit was set) with changes in temperature; hence adequate recoveries can be obtained at Iow temperatures by the introduction of longer residence times for the pulp. The adverse effects of Iow temperatures on grades can be overcome only by additional cleaning or by heating of the pulp.
