Largely inherited from the past and from strictly internal laboratory use, the certification of reference material using round-robin assaying is often insufficient for the use made today for external assay laboratory control by client parties. Certification often needs to be revisited on the basis of existing round-robin data, especially to derive reproducibility parameters to the end of establishing probabilistic performance gates for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch-ærejectionÆ). The most common difficulty arises when only a few certification samples have been analysed in one single batch by each laboratory, so that the round-robin data do not contain the full variability that needs to be quantified. Existing certification data sets from properly submitted round-robin samples were studied using analysis of variance to derive a remedial method, leading to the proposal of default correction factors to restore full variability estimates when no other avenue is available.

This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

The author describes 1. The classification and characteristics of various thick seam mining techniques in various Japanese coal mines. 2. Practices of thick seam mining methods experienced in Taiheiyo Coal Mine. Currently, thick single lift, simultaneous multi lift and non simul- taneous multi lift mining methods are adopted as underground flat thick seam excavations in Japan. These are now reliable and effective in increasing the extraction ratio. At Kushiro Colliery of Taiheiyo Coal Mining Co., these three thick seam mining methods have been used. According to the results, if solidification of the top lift goaf is essential, the non simul- taneous multi lift mining method is the most effective in increasing the extraction ratio without minimising productivity of each lift and it points out that further development of this method is necessary.

The Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Perth, has recently con- structed two major sewerage tunnels in the metropolitan area and a further one is under construction. These tunnels were constructed in sand, sandstone and limestone. The Tamala Limestone is a Pleistocene calcareous dune sand which now varies in com position from loose sand to cemented rock. Investigation techniques included surface mapping, auger and diamond core drilling, seismic refraction geophysics and mechanical testing. The variable nature of the ground caused difficulties in all aspects of the investigation, particularly in core recovery and seismic work. The Beenyup Tunnel, 2.25m in diameter and 3440m long was excavated with a Dosco TBM 1800 machine and shield with precast concrete Charcon Universal bolted segment lining. The Burns Beach Sewer Tunnel, 1.27m in diameter and 860m long was hand excavated with precast reinforced concrete lining pipes jacked continuously behind an excavation

The adoption of new technologies is accompanied by risks that the stakeholders will wish to understand and minimise. The process of developing a dynamic simulation and the plant it will be used in provides a discipline and attention to detail that highlights and provides an opportunity to mitigate risks that will exist in a production environment. The simulations will enable investigation of what the outcome of process failures will be and the impact maintenance. Enumerating this information will enable designs to be optimised and operating and control strategies to be tested.The success of new technology is dependent on the operators and their understanding of it and the machines that use it. In this context dynamic simulations can provide training and experience without risk to personnel, equipment or production. This experience will include situations that would not be induced in a production plant for training purposes. This paper outlines a generic template for a dynamic simulation that can be used to evaluate the introduction of an emerging technology into an operating environment. It includes process flows and surge capacity, breakdown and maintenance, operator interactions and availability, push and pull production scheduling and system control.

The investigation of Noapara glass sand deposit in Sylhet district of Bangladesh is performed to beneficiate the sand for the manufacture of colourless glass. For the ease and efficient removal of the colour bearing impurities, the physical and mineralogical investigations of the sand deposits is carried out first. The sand is then treated with the standard beneficiation procedures to reduce the impurity level to an acceptable level. It is found that the Noapara glass sands are of medium grained and moderately sorted. They contain 0.15 - 0.30 per cent Fe2O3 and 0.001 -0.008 per cent Cr2O3 as major colour bearing impurities. The heavy mineral fractions containing most of the impurities can be grouped into five types of associations:stable or ubiquitous minerals (tourmaline, zircon, rutile); metamorphic species (staurolite, kyanite); amphibole minerals (hornblende, tremolite); the micas (muscovite, biotite); and discrete minerals (magnetite, ilmenite, etc). It is also seen that, the use of mechanical separation process in combination with water washing, attrition, and magnetic separation can remove a maximum of only 70 per cent of total Fe2O3 present in the deposits. This is insufficient to produce the specified grade of sand to manufacture colourless glass. Among the various chemical treatment processes used, sodium dithionite method is found to be the most effective, although the discrete minerals are not removed. Using the specific reagent group during froth flotation, the iron and chromium contents are reduced to 0.03 and 0.001 per cent respectively which are very near to the specified colourless glass composition.

The Dumont deposit is a large (1179 Mt reserve), low-grade (0.27 per cent nickel) nickel sulfide project located in the Abitibi region 25 km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation (RNC) acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through to feasibility. The disseminated nickel sulfide and alloy mineralisation is hosted within the serpentinised dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinised, ultramafic sill of komatiitic affinity. Pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and awaruite (Ni2.5Fe) are the dominant nickel-bearing metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, magnetic separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within serpentine and olivine of the silicate matrix.A detailed mineralogical program including 1420 QEMSCAN« samples and 4400 electron microprobe points was undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. A total of 105 metallurgical tests have been performed under a standard procedure which have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block-by-block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance, thus unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low-grade ultramafic nickel deposits.CITATION:Sciortino, M, Muinonen, J, Korczak, J and St-Jean, A, 2013. For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

In the course of an exploration program aimed at increasing Pasminco Mining's ore reserves, an electromagnetic survey down one of the underground drillholes at the North Mine, Broken Hill, recorded a broad and persistent response. This paper demonstrates that the anomaly was not due to any geological feature, but rather was caused by 'self-response' of the sensing probe. The observed results are due to the surveyed hole lying within a resistive environment and having distinct, but not unusual, changes in dip.This phenomenon has not been widely reported and we believe that there are likely to be similar cases in company records where very genuine looking responses are due to self-response rather than sulphides. These false anomalies can be recognised by correlating the observed data with the calculated down-hole component of the transmitting loop's primary field.

Spiral concentrators are used globally in the fine coal processing industry to segregate particles, by gravitation, on the basis of density and size. Consisting of an open trough that twists vertically downwards about a central axis, a slurry mix of particles and water is fed to the top of the concentrator. Particles are then separated radially as they gravitate downward. Since their introduction to Australia in the 1940's, the generic design has evolved largely by laboratory trial-and-error investigations of different prototypes. However, this approach has proven expensive and optimal designs have not been necessarily developed. Accordingly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been used recently as an alternative method of investigation, to assume as is envisaged, a role in the design process. To date, CFD models have progressed to simulations of turbulent fluid flow on current production spiral designs, and are continuing to be adapted for inclusion of particles at realistic feed concentrations. To be able to use the models confidently however, laboratory experiments must also be performed to validate the predictions during the development stage. This paper reports the current findings of an ongoing CFD and experimental program applied to one spiral unit. Satisfactory quantitative agreement has been achieved for the fluid and particulate flow characteristics, and although further validations are appropriate, the model already possesses significant potential for use as a reliable predictive design tool.

A comprehensive computer simulation has been developed for heap and dump leaching processes. It deals with complex chemical interactions, involving several minerals and reagents, which vary with time and location in the dump. The simulation is generally applic- able to ores of various metals extracted by different reagents. It requires only mineral- ogical data obtainable from drill cores and chemical data obtainable from the literature; there is no curve-fitting with adjustable parameters. Applications in designing testwork programmes, evaluating operating options, transferring experience to new situations and reducing uncertainty in long-term forecasts are described. Specific examples are included illustrating the potential of the simulation.

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

A common problem in the mining industry is that company geologists can operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company (Jones and Moorhead, 2011). This may result in poor knowledge transfer and often priority conflicts with geology, operations and project departments. This problem is amplified by the acquisition of mineralogy capabilities and other metallurgical (met) test work undertaken by many companies in order to solve for complex orebody problems. Met data is often not located and viewed in 3D space so that geologists and engineers can create and work with geometallurgical (geomet) models (Bye, 2006). Visualisation of data in an interactive graphical 3D model provides a bridge enabling met professionals to collaborate with engineers and geologists to provide a common understanding of the relevance of geomet data.In recognition of this problem, Newcrest has undertaken an effective collaboration strategy to improve internal and external engagement through the use of large visualisation displays (Jones, 2009). The displays are underpinned by IT systems and information management practices that recognise the needs of underlying disciplines. Today it is generally understood within Newcrest that this is required to improve decision-making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies has been generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions (IBM, 2008). Mine soils are often organic matter and carbon poor due to disturbance, topsoil stockpiling and mixing with spoil. They present an opportunity to observe the accumulation of soil carbon arising from rehabilitation or ‘green carbon’ through organic matter inputs and may be considered for carbon credits. Soil carbon is known to improve multiple soil characteristics and is viewed as an indicator of soil health.When attempting to estimate soil carbon levels in the Australian coal mining regions, both coal and black carbon (BC) need to be quantified. Coalmine soils contain coal particles that are difficult to distinguish from organic matter using standard carbon analyses. BC, a material arising from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuels, displays some similar characteristics to coal and is ubiquitous in Australian soils due to bushfires. The presence of coal and BC complicate the determination of green carbon levels in mine soils.A method to quantify coal and BC in mine soils from the Bowen Basin using thermal analysis and multivariate curve resolution is presented. By determining BC and coal contributions it is then possible to calculate green carbon levels in rehabilitated mine soils. Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

It offers a ratio-nalisation of exploration efforts during all stages of work.Methodology on the ground during first pass- and follow up explo-ration which has been found effective for the various mineralisa-tion styles is being briefly outlined.

The Lake Superior Region has been a producer of iron ore for over 150 years. Early mining operations concentrated on direct shipping ores, which are the result of post-depositional upgrading principally by deep weathering. As direct shipping ore reserves became depleted, the focus changed to the production of iron ore pellets from taconite. The post-depositional processes responsible for upgrading taconite are regional metamorphism, contact metamorphism and hydrothermal processes (Clout and Simonson, 2005). While these processes are important in iron ore genesis they can also contribute to liberation problems and in some instances reduced pellet quality (Han, 2004). Low-grade metamorphic mineral assemblages can negatively impact liberation and pellet quality. Low-grade iron formation may contain a suite of carbonate minerals including ankerite, dolomite, kutnohorite, siderite and magnesiosiderite. Variation in the distribution and composition of siderite and magnesiosiderite makes controlling the MgO content of pellets difficult. Carbonate minerals also require calcination in the pellet induration process, which requires additional heat to be added to the system, slowing down the induration process and reducing throughput. Prediction of carbonate mineralogy and carbonate mineral chemistry is an important goal of ore characterisation for pelletising properties. Contact metamorphism causes changes in mineralogy and grain size (Klein, 1973; Gunderson and Schwartz, 1962). Increasing the grain size of magnetite should improve its liberation characteristics. However, plant grinding targets may not allow the coarse-grained, more easily liberating magnetite ores to increase throughput and can actually result in decreased throughput due to recirculation. While magnetite and martite ores are well understood (Lukey, Johnson and Scott, 2007) late open-space filling microplaty haematite ores are not. These ores, while composed of similar minerals, have a unique genesis that results in fine grain size and complex textures that present liberation challenges and often make interpreting laboratory metallurgical test results more difficult.
