Abstract

Introductoy.—In view of the fact that an opportunity is to be offered to the members of the Institute present to inspect the recent developments of gold-deposits in the immediate vicinity of Washington it has seemed appropriate that some preliminary description of them should be given which may facilitate that inspection. It would have been a matter of much satisfaction to me to be able to present some general description of the gold-deposits of the Appalachian system ; but I have as yet had no opportunity of personally examining any others than those of Montgomery county, and these are still in their infancy.
