This Historical Metallurgy Note is the final part of a three-part series, the first two of which appeared in the November- December, 1997 and January, 1998 issues of the Bulletin. This series of articles is dedicated to the memory of Nikolai Maximovitch Pereskuryakov (1940- 1994), Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining Institute from 1992 to 1994 who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 54, shortly after celebrating the 275th Anniversary of the Institute.
