Abstract

This paper provides a summary of tailings disposal techniques and the improvements that have been made through the introduction of thickened tailings disposal. The general properties and characteristics of thickened tailings are described, as is a design process for selecting appropriate technologies for thickening, pumping, transporting and storing tailings. The factors affecting the selection of an appropriate disposal site and operational considerations for the effective utilisation of tailings storage areas are also documented.
