Abstract

This report describes work done by the Bureau of Mines to simplify the design and operation of the vortex cone, a new device for prerefining blast furnace iron. Three new apparatus arrangements were tested. Results with one of these arrangements average 74.2 pct silicon removal and 61 pet oxygen efficiency (disregarding removal of carbon and manganese).
