Abstract

This Bureau of Mines report considers some equations for mine pillar design from 1833 to the present. Most of the equations are of essentially the same kind, using pillar width to height relationships. The effects of end constraint and test volume size, that were implied in some of these early equations have received special emphasis in recent years. Experimental testing in the laboratory throughout the period given has been on prisms or cubes of coal or rock. Most of the present concepts have been known since about 1912. Wilson has recently emphasized the effect of end constraint in his confined core concept, but a number of other earlier relationships have indicated an awareness of the effects of constraint as well.
