Abstract

Pressure-grouted helical piles support a new seven-story homeless housing center in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The project team instrumented and statically load tested piles to as much as 1,000 kips (4.4 MN) in advance of construction to obtain the approval of the New York City Building Code officials and to verify the design. Use of pressure-grouted helical piles required additional design effort and time risk because of New York City's Construction Code Determination (CCD1) process, which is required for non- standard deep foundation types.
