Abstract
The activity of zinc in dilute liquid lead alloys containing small additions of silver and gold has been measured using a multielectrode galvanic cell with a fused chloride salt electrolyte. The range of temperatures studied in the Pb-Zn-Ag system was 550" to 670°C and in the Pb-Zn-Au system was 680" to 800°C. The interaction parameters between zinc and the precious metals in the respective temperature ranges are ThE lead-rich corners of the Pb-Zn-Ag and Pb-Zn-Au ternary systems are of considerable industrial importance. The addition of zinc also provides a means for separating gold from lead. Since gold is eliminated more easily than silver, a two-stage removal of gold and silver is possible.8'7 The thermodynamic interactions between zinc and these precious metals in dilute solution in liquid lead
