Abstract
The history of mining-industry regulations on cyanide indicates a trend to set criteria based on generalized inferences related to its high toxicity. As toxic-inventory-motivated regulations are framed, material balances are expected to imply atmospheric releases of HCN as a major factor.
A review of atmospheric data shows the probable triviality of any environmental impact of such releases, and suggests a very deliberate approach to any proposed regulations regarding these emissions.
