Abstract
1. Proposals were submitted to the Western Administrative Center of the US Bureau of Mines, Denver, Colorado on 30th December, 1974 and Contract No J 0255003 was awarded, the effective date being 8th May, 1975. Dames and Moore, Denver, are associated with PD-NCB Consultants in regard to environ-mental problems, surface mining practice and legislation in US.     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY     2.
